Elsie B. Reynolds

ONEONTA — Elsie B. Reynolds, 92, formerly of Cooperstown Junction, died Jan. 31, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Sept. 7, 1907, in Kelly's Corners, the daughter of Hewitt Scudder and Isabelle Hull.

She married Charles V. Reynolds on Sept. 25, 1925. He died Nov. 23, 1968.

Mrs. Reynolds and her husband owned and operated a farm in Cooperstown Junction.

She was a lifetime resident of Cooperstown Junction.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 259, Oneonta.

Elsie is survived by two sisters-in-law, Cora B. Scudder of Colliersville and Marion Reynolds of Oneonta; five nieces, Linda (Mrs. Charles) McKenzie of Stamford, Connie (Mrs. Stephen) Lewis of Maryland, Donna (Mrs. Ward) Brown-Evans of Oneonta, Jo-Ann (Mrs. Michael) Leiker of St. Louis, and Kay (Mrs. Gordon) Spalding of Schenectady; two nephews, Edwin (Dorothy) Reynolds of Worcester and Kenneth (Susan) Miner of Schenectady; and several other grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Dorothy (Scudder) Brown and one brother, Donald G. Scudder.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be later in the spring at Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen Hildebrandt

COOPERSTOWN — Helen Hildebrandt of Lakeview Drive, Cooperstown, passed away Jan. 31, 2000, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

Mrs. Hildebrandt was born in Laurel Hill, the daughter of Maurice and Winifred (Haron) Dalton.

She is a graduate of Hunter College with an undergraduate degree in chemistry and received her graduate degree from Columbia University.

On July 19, 1933, she was married to Richard E. Hildebrandt.

She was a teacher and elementary school principal of PS 61.

After their retirement, they enjoyed traveling, especially to Bermuda.

Mrs. Hildebrandt is survived by her husband; four grandchildren, Kristin E. and Marlon A. Shield of Glastonbury, Conn., Valerie Jeanne and Brian Maitland of Windsor, Conn., Richard E. and Paula V. Erickson of South Glastonbury, Conn., and David J. Erickson of Newport; and seven great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her only child, Valerie H. Erickson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

It is suggested that those who wish may send contributions to the MS Society, 1155 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, Conn. 06109.

Melvin Burgher

SIDNEY CENTER — Melvin Burgher, 76, of Sidney Center, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Hobart, the son of George and Mary Elizabeth (Hoosier) Burgher.

Melvin married the former Charlotte Hotaling on Oct. 16, 1948. She survives him.

Melvin has lived in Sidney Center for the past six years. Before retiring he was a taxi dispatcher for B-Line Taxi, Oneonta, but mostly worked for the New York State Highway Department for many years.

He loved country music. At one time he had lived in Oneonta where he attended church at the Salvation Army.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Charlotte Burgher of Sidney Center; six children, Lawrence Burgher of Sidney Center, Carol Sullivan of Frankfort, Cynthia Carpenter of Afton, Bonnie  Jones of Guilford, Patsy Hopkins of Afton and James Burgher of Mohawk; one sister, Mabel Jubar of Oneonta; 33 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Sidney Center Methodist Church. Burial will be held in the spring of 2000 at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Laurence Tweedie

ANDES — Laurence Tweedie Sr., 90, of Andes, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

Larry was born Nov. 11, 1909, in Bovina, the son of Robert R. and Phebe Mae Thomson Tweedie.

He married Anne Wade on Jan. 19, 1943, in Gilbertsville. She predeceased him in November 1991.

Larry graduated from Delhi Academy and attended New York University for two years.

A lifelong area resident, he has lived in Andes for more than 60 years and was known for his ability to repair small engines.

Larry served in World War II, from 1942-1945.

He was a member of the Andes United Methodist Church, Andes Fire Department, Andes Grange, James T. Calhoun Post American Legion and a former Assessor and Board of Review member for the town of Andes.

Surviving are his son, Jay of Andes; two daughters, JoAnne Tweedie and Betsy Tweedie, both of Delmar; a sister, Leta Gelger of Albany; plus nieces, nephews and two cousins.

Funeral service will be Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Andes Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Burial in Andes Cemetery will be at a later date.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes on Thursday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the Andes Fire Department or the Andes Methodist Church in the name of Larry Tweedie will be appreciated.

Paul Rabeler

DELHI — Paul Rabeler, 82, of Delhi, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany.

He was born Oct. 16, 1917, in Leigh, Neb., the son of Henry and Eunice (Holm) Rabeler.

His wife, Tillie (Menke) Rabeler, of Delhim whom he married on Aug. 27, 1950, in Delhi, survives Mr. Rabeler. Two sons, Paul H. Rabeler of Clifton Park and Steven W. Rabeler of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; two granddaughters; two brothers, Gordon Rabeler of New City and Roland Rabeler of Delhi; and two sisters, Hilda Griessel of Altamont and Dolores Palmer of Queensbury; as well as several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a staff tech sergeant during World War II.

Before moving to Delhi in 1983, Mr. Rabeler was a dairy farmer in Bovina.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, and VFW Donald W. Gleason Post #190 in Delhi, also, the American Legion.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, with the Rev. John Priest officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Delhi Emergency Squad or the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi.

John N. Bucher

BAINBRIDGE — John N. Bucher, 82, of Bainbridge, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born on Feb. 15, 1917, in Switzerland.

John was the former owner and operator of the Pines Steak House in Wayne, N.J.

He served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post #183, Sidney, the VFW RH Arrandale Post #7914, Sidney, Lodge of the Elks #2175 and Loyal Order of Moose #277, Sidney.

John married Katherine Bodenmann in 1940, in North Bergen. She predeceased him.

John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Wallace Romaine of Wayne, N.J.; one sister, Hedy Elder of Florida; three grandchildren, Rose, David and Nancy; and three great-grandchildren; and special friends, Shirley and Robert Hickey of Sidney.

John was also predeceased by a son, John Robert Bucher.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 4, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m.

Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 4, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Sidney Emergency Squad, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Annie Calleja

COOPERSTOWN — Annie Calleja, 65, a resident at The Meadows, formerly of Schenevus, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born March 8, 1934, in Malta, the daughter of Gaetano and Emmanuela (Attard) Attard.

She married Charles Calleja in August 1957 in Malta. He predeceased her April 9, 1991.

Mrs. Calleja moved to the United States in 1957, and shortly there after moved to Schenevus.

Mrs. Calleja is survived by three sons, Joseph and his wife, Nancy Calleja, of Cooperstown, John Calleja of Fort Plain and Vinny and his wife, Kym Calleja, of Cooperstown; two sisters, Carmen and Gaeta; a brother, Joseph; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor at the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be announced at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Calleja to The Meadows, Activity Fund, 140 County Highway 33, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Ethel C. Hamilton

 Johnson CITY — Ethel C. Hamilton, 92, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Susquehanna Nursing Home in  Johnson City.

She was born in Bainbridge on July 26, 1907, the daughter of George W. Cook and Lillian Foster Cook.

She married Harold Ceylon Hamilton on Aug. 18, 1929. He died March 30, 1992.

She lived in Otego, teaching school for more than 30 years in Otego Central School (now Unatego).

She was a member of the Otego Baptist Church, the W.C.T.U., the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the Otsego Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are two great-nephews and wives, Robert and Patricia Cook of Kirkwood and James and Joanne Cook of Endwell; great-great-nephew, Christopher Cook, son of Robert and Patricia Cook; and one niece, Janette Cook of  Johnson City; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Coralin and Ed Crandall of Gilboa; and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at the Otego Baptist Church, Main Street, Otego, with the Rev. Robert Wesley officiating.

Calling hour will be noon-1 p.m. at the church on Saturday, Feb. 5, before services.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otego Baptist Church, 101 Main St., Otego, N.Y. 13825 in memory of Ethel C. Hamilton.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Frank A. Ruggiero

OXFORD — Frank A. Ruggiero, 90, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 18, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home.

Frank was born Nov. 14, 1909, in New York City, the son of Joseph and Filomena (DiGianni) Ruggiero.

Frank was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II.

He was a retired taxi cab driver from New York City having moved to this area from East Elmhurst.

Frank is survived by a cousin, Adeline Silvestri of  Jackson Heights; a nephew, Vincent Ruggiero of Dunedin, Fla.; three grandnieces and five grandnephews, Michele Lewis of Sidney, Gail Wessells and Teresa Sears of Otego, Francis Ruggiero of Delhi, Michael Ruggiero and Timothy Ruggiero of Philadelphia, Pa., John Ruggiero of Dayton, Ohio, and Gerald Ruggiero of Cortland.

A memorial Mass will be offered 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta. The Rev. Robert Longobucco will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Theodore R. DeMyttenaere

DELHI STAGE — Theodore R. DeMyttenaere (Ted DeMytt), 84, of Delhi Stage, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 25, 1915, in Westport, Conn., the son of Jules and Florida DeMyttenaere.

He married Louise A. Beaudry on June 2, 1937, in Connecticut.

Ted served in the United States Navy Seabees during World War II.

He moved to the Franklin area in 1948, from Weston, Conn. For many years, he was a self-employed contractor, and built many homes in Otsego and Delaware counties.

Ted was a member of Oneonta Post 259, American Legion, and the Otsego County Voiture of the 40/8.

He was an avid antique-car enthusiast, and held memberships in the Rolling Antique Car Club of Norwich, and the Reminiscers Car Club of Oneonta. He was also a member of the Ouleout Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise A. DeMyttenaere of Delhi Stage; two brothers, Charles DeMyttenaere of Weston, Conn., and Jules DeMyttenaere of Rolling Hills, Va.; one stepbrother and three stepsisters, including Ruth Lockwood of Weston, Conn. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Mr. Richard Sliter, interim pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church of North Franklin, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the Aldrich Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
