Ellen Blessin

ONEONTA — Mrs. Ellen Blessin, 85, of Nader Towers, Oneonta, and formerly of Cooperstown, died Sunday morning, Feb. 13, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Louis Dickenson Jr.

EDMESTON — Louis S. Dickenson Jr., 80, of Edmeston, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital with his family at his side.

He was born Feb. 1, 1920, in New Lisbon, the son of Louis Stanton and Nellie G. (Tuller) Dickenson.

He married Elizabeth L. Bowen on March 27, 1943, in Richfield Springs.

Louis, affectionately referred to as "The Chief," operated with his wife, Betty, the family dairy farm for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children and their spouses, Marlene and Manny Jimenez, Sandra and Darryl Dye, Duane and Cathy Dickenson, Patricia and Wayne Clark and Randi and Robert Nocella; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Helen Dickenson and Calvin and Phyllis Dickenson.

Funeral services will be held today at noon at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating. Calling hours are one hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Louis's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Dorothy S. Giehm

TUCSON, Ariz. — Dorothy S. Giehm, 108, of Tucson, Ariz., and Margaretville, N.Y., passed away Feb. 4, 2000, at the Life Care Center of Tucson, Tucson, Ariz.

She was born in Dunraven, Jan. 10, 1892, daughter of Olney and Margaret Burgher Smith.

After graduating from the Margaretville High School in 1911, she received her teaching certificate from New Paltz College in 1915. Her teaching career started in one-room school houses in Dry Book Valley. She then taught in Rotterdam Junction, N.Y., New Jersey, and retired from the New York City school system in Brooklyn in the 1950s.

She married John Giehm in 1933, and made their home in Manhasset, N.Y. John predeceased her in 1977. Before John's death, they traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Far East. They frequently visited Denmark, where John was born.

Always a very active person, she visited Alaska, to include a helicopter ride to a glacier, with a grand niece at 100. At 104, she visited Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. In 1999, she attended the annual Life Care Center Corporate meeting in Cleveland, Tenn., as the guest of honor. She also traveled from Arizona for summers at her home in New Kingston until 1994.

At the age of 102, she started painting landscape scenes of the family farm and of Arizona, continuing with her love for painting and sculpture until the time of her death. She also regularly attended opera and symphony performances presented in Tucson.

On numerous occasions, she was recognized for her zest for life by the governor of Arizona, the mayor of Tucson and many other governmental and civic leaders. She continued to show her concern and love for children by interacting with them so that they might better understand the elderly. Known as Aunt Dorothy, she had been adopted by many of the local Tucson schools.

She was an active member of the Christian Science Church in Tucson and had previously been a member of the Delhi, N.Y., congregation.

She is survived by nephews, Arthur Smith of Oneonta, N.Y., and Irving Smith of Casa Grande, Ariz.; nieces, Anne Smith Nelson of Rochester, N.Y., and Susan Smith Guinan of Oneonta, N.Y.; and nine grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, Maurice Smith, Samuel Smith, Harold Smith, Selwyn Smith, Lloyd Smith and Morgan Smith; and sisters, Florence Smith and Elizabeth Smith Parker.

A graveside service will be conducted at the Sanford Cemetery in the spring on a date to be announced.

Arrangements to be made by Hynes Funeral Home, Walnut Street, Margaretville.

Dorothy M. Eckler

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mrs. Dorothy M. Eckler, 85, formerly of Richfield Springs, died Monday morning, Feb. 14, 2000, at The Meadows.

She was born on April 25, 1914, at home on the family farm on Wiltsey Hill Road in the town of Stark, a daughter of William and Ella (Shaver) Galusha.

She married Arthur Eckler on Nov. 25, 1936, in Waterville. Mr. Eckler died in 1983.

Throughout her life, Dorothy had been employed by Sure Catch in Richfield Springs, Remington Arms in Ilion, Com-Tone in Canajoharie and had also been a housekeeper for many area residents.

She is survived by her two sisters, Mrs. Vera Young of Fly Creek and Mrs. Freda  Jones of Palatine Bridge; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Leland Galusha, who died in 1979; and her niece, Mrs. Ronald (Charlotte) Talbot, who died Dec. 15, 1999.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Springfield Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 1456, Richfield Springs, N.Y. 13439.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Elsie B. Cornelia

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Elsie B. Cornelia, 93, passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 27, 1906, in Roosevelt, Long Island, the daughter of David and Anna (Sullivan) Brown.

On Oct. 2, 1929, she married Floyd Cornelia in Hackettstown, N.J., he predeceased her on Feb. 4, 1993.

Mrs. Cornelia graduated from Babies Hospital, Newark, N.J. in 1928. She worked in that field until 1933, and then became a homemaker and mother. She moved to Cherry Valley in June 1971.

She was an active member of PTA Mount Olive Township, Civil Air Patrol, Civil Defense Corps, DAR, active in Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church, Budd Lake, Budd Lake Civic Association, Hackettstown Women's Club.

She was a gifted, self-taught still-life and landscape artist well into her 80s.

She was a member of the Cherry Valley Historic Association, Middlefield Historic Association, Cooperstown Stamp Club, she was a past elder in the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, past noble grand of Rebecca Lodge #546 and still active in it until her passing.

Mrs. Cornelia is survived by two sons, David and his wife, Lynda Cornelia, of Ronks, Pa. and Thomas and his wife, Janis Cornelia, of Henderson, Nev.; three grandsons, David and his wife, Tina, of Cherry Valley, Brett and his wife, Kim, of California City,  Calif., and Bradley and his wife, Andrea, of North Las Vegas, Nev.; six great-grandchildren, David, Danielle and Desire of Cherry Valley, and Bradley II, Ryan and Kevin of North Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Minerva Varrato of Phillsburg, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Brown; and sisters, Rae Allison and Lillian Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Budd Lake, N.J., at a later date.

Cremation will take place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

There will be no public calling hours.

Contributions in Mrs. Cornelia's memory may be made to the Rebecca Lodge #546, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley: 264-8141.

Fonda G. Brown

CASTLETON-ON-HUDSON — Fonda G. Brown, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at the Resurrection Nursing Home in Castleton-on-Hudson, after a lengthy illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Oneonta. She was an active member of the Elm Park Methodist Church and Senior Nutrition Center.

She was recognized for her creative talent both with acrylic paintings and stained glass. Her paintings had been exhibited at A.O. Fox Hospital, Huntington Library, Elm Park Church and Oneonta Nursing Home.

She loved to travel and had visited far away places such as Canada, Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Russia, Italy, Greece, Egypt, England and Ireland.

She enjoyed seafood and the ocean. She was fond of games, especially cards, and rarely missed Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

In her younger years, she had worked for several local businesses and was an avid bowler and flower gardener.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Brown.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dalene E. Cross (Robert) of Castleton and Diane E. Kniskern (Col. W. Richard) of Tabb, Va.; seven grandchildren, Victoria Shuster (Dale) of South Orange, N.J., Valerie Cross of Freeville, Timothy Cross (Margaret) of Castleton, Teresa Cross of Albany, Kenneth Kniskern of  Oklahoma City, Okla., and Karen and Kate Kniskern of Tabb, Va.; and four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Alysha Cross and Kayla and Kellyn Shuster.

Visiting hours will be at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16, followed by services at 2 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fonda's memory to the Elm Park Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ellen Blessin

ONEONTA — Mrs. Ellen Blessin, 85, of Nader Towers, Oneonta, and formerly of Cooperstown, died Sunday morning, Feb. 13, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on Aug. 11, 1914, in the village of Locust Valley on Long Island, a daughter of Charles and Hilda (Johnson) Ketcham.

She married Arthur O. Blessin on Oct. 25, 1932, on Long Island. Mr. Blessin died on May 11, 1983.

Ellen was raised on Long Island and graduated from high school in Glen Cove.

During World War II she was employed by Republic Aircraft.

In September 1945, Ellen and her husband moved to Cooperstown where they raised their family. For the past 16 years she had been a resident of Oneonta.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta and was an avid reader.

Ellen is survived by three daughters, Celia B. Lamb and her husband, Theodore, of Cooperstown, Elizabeth L. Blessin of Greensboro, N.C., and Barbara Fredericks of Utica; one son, Arthur C. Blessin, and his wife, Beverly, of Fly Creek; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Albert Ketcham, and his wife, Muriel, of Manchester, Tenn.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Oneonta Fire Department, care of Chief Barnes, 81 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Stephen E. Green

CLARKSBURG, W. Va. — Stephen Edward Green, 44, of 33 Wilkinson St., Summit Park, Route 2, Clarksburg, W.Va., died at his residence at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000.

He was born in Sidney, N.Y., Sept. 15, 1955, a son of the late Bruce Stephen Green and Mrs. Dorothy Sue Meyer Green of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Unadilla, N.Y.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one brother, Timothy Bruce Green and wife, Michele of Norwich, N.Y.; four sisters, Sharon Green of Sidney Center, N.Y., Mrs. Esther Beismer and husband, William, of Afton, N.Y., Mrs. Martha Haynes and husband, Carlton, of Syracuse, N.Y. and Laurie Anne Green of Homer, N.Y.; and three nieces and five nephews, Michelle, Jeremy, Daniel, David, Christopher, Stephanie, Trisha and Timothy II.

Mr. Green had attended Summit Park Baptist Church in Clarksburg, W.Va. He was an avid fan of all professional sports, especially of the New York Yankees.

He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

He was a computer assistant for the FBI with 26 years' service.

Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, W.Va., from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000.

Mr. Green's body will be moved to the C.H. Landers Funeral Home, Sidney, N.Y., for visitation on Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Jerry Shriver conducting the services. Interment will follow at a later time in the Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center, N.Y.

Richard V. Watson

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Richard V. Watson, 84, of Phoenix, Ariz., died at the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000.

Richard Victor Watson was born in Delhi, N.Y., on Feb. 14, 1915, the son of John B. Watson and Emily Louise Montangue.

Richard lived his younger years in Delhi and the Peaks Brook area.

He was a veteran of World War II entering the Army in 1942, and discharged as sergeant from the 145th Infantry Division in December of 1945. Upon return from the service he and his wife, Marietta Stoner, moved to Arizona for a time, and then California. In 1971, he returned to Arizona where he has resided ever since.

Over the years of his employment he worked for Hughes Aircraft and was self-employed as a watch maker and owned an electronics firm called Watson Industries. He retired from Fire Stik Antenna Co. in Arizona in 1982.

Besides Marietta, his wife of 58 years, he is survived by a daughter from a prior marriage, Mrs. Paul (Patricia) Hamilton of Sidney, N.Y., and his daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Linda) Smith of North Hollywood,  Calif., and Mrs. Timothy (Darlene) Jensen of Phoenix, Ariz. He is survived by 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Hansen Mortuary, 8314 N. 7th Street. Graveside service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, at Greenwood Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren, with Pastor John Hubley and the Rev. Hans B. Kistner officiating.

Frances Treiber

ONEONTA — Frances Treiber, 83, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was formerly of 421 Elsie St., South Plainfield, N.J., she had relocated to Oneonta due to failing health to be closer to the family in November 1990.

She was born Dec. 24, 1916, to Adam and Stanislowa Basalak in Jersey City, N.J.

She married James O. Treiber on May 20, 1940, in South Plainfield, N.J. James predeceased her in November 1985.

Working in defense plants during World War II, Frances was a retiree of the Westinghouse Corp. of Edison, N.J., and also of the Hartwick Nursing Home on Park Avenue in Plainfield, N.J.

She was a life member of "Our Lady of Czestochowa Polish Catholic Church" of South Plainfield, N.J. until her relocation.

Frances is survived by her only son, James Treiber Jr., and his wife, Carol, of Morris; two granddaughters, Lori Treiber Costello and her husband, Richard, of Franklin and Dana Treiber Martin and her husband, Christopher, of Austin,  Texas; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Ann and Christopher James Martin of Austin,  Texas, and Dylan Raymond Costello of Franklin.

Funeral services and interment will be in New Jersey.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Edward S. Decker

COLONIE — Services will be held for Edward S. Decker, 92, of Lombard Street, Colonie, who died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Albany County Nursing Home in Colonie.

Born in Stamford, Mr. Decker worked for his father's feed store in Stamford. From 1941-1942 he worked as a postal clerk in Stamford before coming to Schenectady in 1943. He has lived in Colonie since 1949.

He graduated from the Albany Business College.

Mr. Decker worked as a clerk for the General Electric Co., in Schenectady, retiring in 1972, as a fireman.

He was a member of the G.E. 1/4-century club. He was a former member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Colonie.

His wife, Margaret Barclay Decker, died in 1989.

Survivors include two sons, John S. Decker of Loudonville and Edward B. Decker of Schenectady. He is also survived by three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. Calling hours, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be held Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. before the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date in Stamford Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Midway Fire Department, 1956 Central Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12205.
