Maie L'Heureux
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Maie (Hartman) L'Heureux, 82, of 611 Bedford Road, Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of 70 Hillcrest Ave., Meriden, Conn., and wife of the late Leo R. L'Heureux, died at her home on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000.
Born in Meriden on May 6, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Katherine (Dul) Hartman and had lived in Meriden until 1985 when she moved to Fayetteville.
She attended local schools and graduated from Meriden High School, Class of 1935. Mrs. L'Heureux was employed by Aero Gasket Co. of South Meriden for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983. She was a former parishioner of Holy Angels Church and was a member of the Legion of Mary and the Holy Angels Women's Club.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Lipari of Oneonta; one son and his wife, Robert and Kazue L'Heureux of Fayetteville; five grandchildren, Robert Michael Lipari, Joseph Lipari and Katherine Regina Lipari, all of Oneonta, and Robert L'Heureux and Ann Michiko L'Heureux, both of Fayetteville; one sister, Mabel Hartman of Meriden; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Regina Zychowski of Meriden; and two brothers, Frederick Hartman of Meriden and Casimir Hartman of Sheldon, Vt.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 9:15 a.m. at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, Conn., and at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, South Meriden.
Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Leo C. Cahenzli
MASONVILLE — Leo C. Cahenzli, 67, of Masonville, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.
He was born to the late Christopher and Josephine (Caflish) Cahenzli on May 6, 1932, in Passaic, N.J.
Leo served his country in the U.S. Army in the 59th Engineering Corps in Korea.
He married Audrey Hathaway on Sept. 20, 1980, in Masonville.
Leo was a general contractor; even though it was his job, masonry and stone work were his passion. He has completed many projects in the area during the last 30 years, which serve as evidence of his passion.
He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Christopher Cahenzli of Queens, Michael and JoAnn Cahenzli of Aurora, Colo., Jonathan Cahenzli of Red Hook and William Cahenzli of Masonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Ronald Brynoff of Granby, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law, Conrad and Doreen Cahenzli of Hyde Park; five grandchildren, Jill, Lara and Lesli Cahenzli and Amanda and Nicholas Brynoff; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 21, at the Circle Drive Alliance Church, Sidney, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Flanders will officiate.
Friends may call Sunday, Feb. 20, from 2-4 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Devereux Center, P.O. Box 40, Red Hook, N.Y. 12571.
Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.
Mildred A. Steck
OTEGO — Mildred A. Steck, 82, of Otego, formerly of Bovina, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
The daughter of Walter F. and Elsie M. (Ahrens) Albert, she was born Jan. 7, 1918, in Manhattan, where she grew up and married Edward R. Steck on May 13, 1941.
Earlier in life, "Millie" was employed as a cashier for 20 years with Food Fair supermarkets in Flushing. The Stecks moved to Bovina in 1971, where they lived until moving to Otego five years ago.
She was an active parishioner of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Edward R. Steck; two sons, Edward A. Steck of Brooklyn and Kenneth C. Steck of Puerto Rico; one daughter, Carol L. Cadette of Flushing; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Enders of Carle Place; and several nieces and nephews.
The Burial Office will be read at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware (where the Stecks were former active parishioners).
The Rev. Frank Crenshaw will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Cremation will be arranged by Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad.
Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
Wilma Marshall
NORWICH — Mrs. Wilma Marshall, 59, of Valley View Road, Norwich, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born May 2, 1940, in Washington, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Anna Wright.
On Feb. 14, 1969, she married John Marshall in Margaretville. He predeceased her July 27, 1987.
She is survived by one son, Frederick Marshall of Norwich; three daughters, Caroline Taylor of Bainbridge and Joanne Ogden and April Marshall, both of Norwich; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be held in the spring in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Friends are invited to call from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the funeral chapel.
Alice E. Babcock
CLINTONDALE — Alice E. Babcock, 75, of Clintondale, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie.
She was born on May 29, 1924, in Hilburn, the daughter of the late Truman and Anna Chada Gannon.
She was married to Norman J. Babcock, who died on March 2, 1996.
She has lived in Clintondale since 1993. Before that, she lived in the Cooperstown/Laurens area.
She was a homemaker. She also was a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Alice is survived by one daughter, Esther Babcock of Clintondale; one brother, Frank Gannon of California; one niece; and one nephew.
She was predeceased by one brother, Truman Gannon.
There will be no calling hours, and the funeral and burial will be private.
Arrangements are by the Copeland Funeral Home Inc., New Paltz.
Bert C. Nessel
DELHI — Bert C. Nessel, 80, of Delhi died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at home.
He was born May 9, 1919, in the Bronx, the son of George and Kate (Baumbach) Nessel.
His wife, Jeanette (Hedrich) Nessel, whom he married on June 28, 1941, survives him. A daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and James Tauchen of Delhi; son-in-law, John Gannon of Delhi; four granddaughters, Lisa Tauchen, Leigh Tauchen, both of Delhi, Laura Wood of Hamden and Cynthia Bauman of Schenectady; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Nessel was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He and his wife moved to Delhi in November 1982, following his retirement from Grummans, Long Island.
There will be no services at this time. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Delhi Emergency Squad.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
Sandra Fuegmann
ESPERANCE — Mrs. Sandra Jean Fuegmann, 56, of Sanitarium Road, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Bassett Healthcare Facility in Cooperstown following a long illness.
Mrs. Fuegmann was born May 9, 1943, in Delhi, the daughter of Perry and Thelma (Finch) White.
Mrs. Fuegmann spent her childhood years in Meridale, and as an adult lived in both Delaware and Schoharie counties.
She retired from Cable Technologies International of New York Inc., where she worked as a laborer.
Mrs. Fuegmann was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Wayne Jones.
Survivors include her husband, Peter E. Fuegmann, whom she married Dec. 12, 1992; three daughters, Rhoda Porter of Schoharie, Melissa Becker of Cobleskill and Kristie Merwin of Portlandville; two sons, Robert D. Jones Jr., of Cobleskill and Shawn P. Kelley of Esperance; three stepdaughters, Margaret Olthoff of Coxsackie, Deborah Lactignola of Richmondville and Sandra Fuegmann of Roundtop; a stepson, Peter O. Fuegmann of Greenville; and 15 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. John Seltzer of the Zion Lutheran Church in Cobleskill. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, from 6 to 7 p.m. Cremation will follow the service at the Vale Crematory, Schenectady.

Ellen Rockafellow
SOUTH WORCESTER — Ellen J. Rockafellow went to be with her Lord on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, after a brief illness.
She was born on Nov. 5, 1918, as a twin daughter to Willet and Jennie Morell Silvernail.
She attended the small country schoolhouse in the village of South Worcester until the eighth grade, completing her high school education at Worcester Central School.
She was married to John D. Rockafellow on July 4, 1952, and was mother to John D. Rockafellow Jr. and Connie Rockafellow Hornstra.
She was an excellent seamstress, and lovingly served many elderly friends and acquaintances with private duty care.
She attended the First Summit Baptist Church of Charlotteville for most of her life, holding positions over the years as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, missionary chairman, and youth group director. She loved the young people, and often opened her home to visiting choirs and missionary groups.
She was presently a member of the First Baptist Church of Cobleskill, the Schoharie County Senior Citizens, the Homemaker Unit of Charlotteville and the Otsego County Republican Committee.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1979, as well as her twin sister, Helen, in 1984.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie; and son, John Jr.; as well as her eldest sister, Agatha Moroz. She was beloved grandmother to Benjamin Madore, Aaron Hornstra, and Travis and Jason Rockafellow. She leaves behind several very dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be calling hours held on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Funeral Home in Worcester. Her family will be in attendance. The funeral celebrating Ellen's life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Main Street, Cobleskill, with the Rev. James Ellis, pastor, officiating. For those who wish to pay their respects prior to the funeral, the family will be in attendance at the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m.
Contributions to the Worcester Historical Society may be made in lieu of flowers if preferred.

Marvin L. Slentz
BELLONA — Marvin L. Slentz, 62, of 66 Pre-Emption Road, Bellona, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Rochester General Hospital.
Mr. Slentz was born in Leonardsville on Oct. 9, 1937.
He was married on Oct. 10, 1959, to Elizabeth Guller Slentz.
He served with the United States Army, and was employed with KB Transport of Brockport.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Julia and Rae Kelly; loving wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Slentz; sons, David (Debra) Slentz of New Berlin, Donald (Karen) Slentz of Bellona, Michael (Pamela) Slentz of Penn Yan, Dusty (Kathy) Slentz of Geneva; daughters, Diane (James) McDaniel of Sherburne, Heather (Keith) Sokolowski of Penn Yan, Jill Slentz (Michael Williams) of California; 13 grandchildren; brother, Thomas (Joann) Slentz; sister, Julia (Ronald) Bennett; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel in Penn Yan today from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Herbert Tietjen officiating. Burial will be at Bellona Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Bellona Volunteer Fire Department.
Larry J. Hinkley
JUPITER, Fla. — Larry James Hinkley, 56, of Jupiter, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in Jupiter, Fla.
He was born June 21, 1943, in Stamford, the son of James Hinkley and Elna Peck.
He graduated from Roxbury Central School and joined the Marines, serving from 1961-1965.
He was a self-employed carpenter for many years in the Roxbury area before moving to Florida.
Larry is survived by his mother and father, Jim and Elna Hinkley of Roxbury; two sons, Todd Hinkley of Roxbury and Tony and his wife, Susan Hinkley of Middlegburgh; three grandchildren, Savannah Rae Hinkley of Margaretville and Troy and Shilah Hinkley of Middleburgh; one sister, Karen Hanor of Petersburg, W.Va.; lifelong friend, Anthony Iacovelli and family of Mamaroneck; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.
Committal services will be private.
Contributions may be made in memory of Larry James Hinkley to the Memorial Fund of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, N.Y.
Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
Minnie M. Stevens
COOPERSTOWN — Minnie M. Stevens, 93, formerly of Schenevus died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at The Meadows, where she has been a resident.
She was born Jan. 19, 1907, in Greene, the daughter of Edward and Lena (Austin) Groves.
She married John Stevens on Sept. 6, 1924, in Franklin. He died Nov. 20, 1991.
She was a lifelong area resident.
Minnie is survived by daughters, Irene Layman of Milford, Viola Effner of Warnerville, Helen Mykel of Fort Plain and Marjorie Dodson of Schenevus; sons, Edward of Florida, Richard of Schoharie and Frederick of Charlotteville; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Louise Loring, and sons, John Jr., Robert and Ned.
At Mrs. Stevens' request, she was cremated and a graveside service will be held at the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.
Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Stevens to The Meadows, Activity Fund, 140 County Highway, 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.
