Jeanette Nessel

DELHI — Jeanette Nessel, 80, of Delhi, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 30, 1919, in the Bronx, the daughter of William and Kate ( Schmidt) Hedrich.

Her husband, Bert C. Nessel, who she married June 28, 1941, predeceased her on Feb. 19, 2000. A daughter, Joyce Gannon, also predeceases her.

A daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and James Tauchen of Delhi; son-in-law, John Gannon of Delhi; four granddaughters, Lisa Tauchen, Leigh Tauchen, both of Delhi, Laura Wood of Hamden and Cynthia Bauman of Schenectady; and two great-grandchildren survive.

Mrs. Nessel moved to Delhi in 1982, and enjoyed caring for her home and family.

There will be no services at this time. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Delhi Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Bertha B. Baldwin

CHERRY VALLEY — Bertha B. Baldwin, 91, of Montgomery St., Cherry Valley, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, following a short illness.

She was born June 19, 1908, in Ames, the daughter of Frederick and Grace (Moore) Porath.

On Aug. 5, 1924, she married Claude Baldwin Sr. in East Springfield. The couple owned and operated a farm near Cherry Valley until Mr. Baldwin died in 1958.

Mrs. Baldwin was educated at the former Buel country school and the former Cherry Valley village schools. She was employed for many years by various hotels in Palm Beach, Fla., and Cooperstown.

A resident of Cherry Valley since 1958, she was an active member of the Cherry Valley Rebekah Lodge, initiated into organizations in 1961, and received her 30-year pin in 1992. She was a member and past president of the former Whiteman-Hull-Snyder American Legion Post Auxiliary of Cherry Valley, a member of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church and its Ladies Aid Society and a charter member of the Roseboom Senior Citizens Club.

Mrs. Baldwin also served as an election inspector for many years in Cherry Valley.

Survivors include two sons, Claude Baldwin Jr. and Elmer Baldwin, both of Cherry Valley; three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Vogelien of Cherry Valley, Mrs. Elsie (Pat) Moore of East Springfield and Mrs. Duane (Sally) Anthony of Clermont, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Flint of The Meadows, Cooperstown; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A Gold Star Mother, Mrs. Baldwin was predeceased by two sons, Clarence (Butch) Baldwin, killed in Vietnam in 1968, and Harold (Pug) Baldwin of Ft. Myers, Fla., who died on Dec. 27, 1999; a sister, Elsie Smith, who died June 1999; and four brothers, Robert and Donald Porath, who died October and November 1999, respectively, and Fred and Clarence (Spike) Porath, who died several years ago.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 3, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Baldwin will be placed in the Ottman Funeral Home private vault to await spring burial in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mrs. Baldwin's memory may be made to the donor's choice.

Charles L. Miller

TAMPA, Fla. — Charles L. Miller, 70, of Springfield, N.Y., and Tampa, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000.

Charlie was born in Tampa, Fla., and graduated from MIT, where he was a member of the faculty for 20 years.

In 1949, in Rutland Vt., he married Roberta Pye, who survives.

In 1959, he founded C.L.M. Systems Inc., in Tampa, Fla.

The Millers had resided in Lexington and Boxborough, Mass. In 1981, they came to Springfield, N.Y., where they established Millpride Farm.

Surviving are his wife, Roberta; three sons and daughters-in-law, C. Henry and Gretchen Miller of Springfield, N.Y., Stephen and Claudia Miller of Tampa, Fla., and Jonathan and Deborah Miller of Springfield Center, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a son, Matt.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 3, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Tampa, Fla.

Charlie was an avid gardener.

Memorials may be sent to Plant A Tree, in care of the Forestry Fund, Box 89, Herkimer, N.Y. 13350.

Arlene Bell

NORWICH — Arlene Bell, 83, of Norwich and formerly of Sidney, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Wilson Hospital,  Johnson City.

She was born April 19, 1916, to the late Clinton and Margaret (Bradish) Fletcher in Wakeman, Ohio.

Arlene married William Bickford on Feb. 2, 1935, and later married Clarence Bell on April 21, 1967. Clarence predeceased her on Aug. 21, 1992.

She was employed as an assembler at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, until she retired in 1978. Arlene was a 4-H leader for the Union Valley Yellow Jackets and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also belonged to the Sidney Senior Citizens. Arlene was a member of the Union Valley Methodist Church and transferred to Sidney United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women in Union Valley.

Arlene enjoyed flowers and gardening, crafts, and cooking.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Darwin and Kay Bickford of Huntington, Ark.; daughter, Bettye C. Haugh of Norwich; daughter and son-in-law, Jinger and David Chew of Dunedin, Fla.; stepson, Clarence Bell Jr. of Germany; stepson and daughter-in-law, Donald and Dollie Bell of Grand Junction,  Colo.; brother, Lyall and Dotty Fletcher of  Texas; two sisters-in-law, Hazel and Helen Fletcher of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Sulynn and Dewey Anderson of Dunedin, Fla., Torrey Chew of Arlington,  Texas, Jay and Lois Ann Bickford of Savage, Minn., Scott and Crystal Bickford, Charles and Coty Bell of Houston,  Texas, Lowell Bell of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Donald Bell Jr. of Grand Junction,  Colo.; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is also predeceased by two brothers, Elton and Ernest Fletcher.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 6, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney officiating.

Friends may call Sunday, March 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Methodist Church, Sidney, or the Norwich Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

H. Irving Chase

COBLESKILL — H. Irving Chase, of East Main St., Cobleskill, died at his home on Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, after a long illness.

Mr. Chase was born in Edmeston on May 12, 1906, son of Worthy and Allie Crumb Chase.

He graduated from Edmeston Central School and Albany Business College and attended the Bankers School of Agriculture at Cornell University.

He moved to Cobleskill in the late '20s and was employed at the First National Bank of Cobleskill, which later became a branch of the Key Bank, becoming vice president and retiring in 1971.

His activities in Cobleskill were numerous: a 70-year member of Cobleskill Lodge #394, F&AM; served as Cobleskill village clerk: treasurer of the Cobleskill Agricultural Society, a member of the board of trustees of the Cobleskill Public Library; a member of both the Cobleskill Exchange and Cobleskill Rotary Clubs; an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Cobleskill, and had served on the Church Council; founding member and officer of the Cobleskill Historical Society and an officer of the Schoharie County Historical Society; a member of the Monday Night Club and a member of the Cobleskill Restoration and Development Corp.

He was married on Aug. 2, 1930, at Zion Lutheran Church to Florence Kennedy, who died in 1997.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Conrad (Jeanette) Fagone of Arlington, Mass.; a granddaughter, Deborah Fagone of Medford, Mass.; a grandson, Steven Fagone of Sudbury, Mass.; and a great-granddaughter.

Service will be held Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Main Street, Cobleskill, with the Rev. John Seltzer officiating. Interment will be in the spring at the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill.

Memorials to the Memorial Fund of the Zion Lutheran Church will be appreciated.

Joseph E. Todd Sr.

FLEISCHMANNS — Joseph E. Todd Sr., 86, of Red Kill Road, Fleischmanns, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, with his loving family at his side.

He was a lifelong resident of the area having been born in Dry Brook on April 13, 1913, the son of Basil and Olive George Todd.

He graduated from Margaretville High School in 1932.

On April 23, 1950, he married Dorothy Kelly in Red Kill.

Joe was a very talented individual. He operated various farms, and as a carpenter built many homes in the area.

In recent years, along with his wife and son, Joseph Jr., he owned and operated Todd's Greenhouse and Nursery on Little Red Kill Road.

He belonged to the Margaretville Masonic Lodge #389 F.&A.M. He held various offices for the Bedell Cemetery Association throughout the years, and was a member of the Catskill Mountain Square Dance Club.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years; two sons and a daughter-in-law, the Rev. Adrian K. Todd of Chapman, Maine, and Joseph and Brenda Todd of Fleischmanns; and two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilee and Jon Asher and Dorothy and William Ward, all of Fleischmanns; and eight grandchildren, who he adored, Teresa Burnett and Karen Ward, Travis, Erin and Carrie Asher and Olivia, Caleb and Ian Todd. A brother-in-law, Arthur S. Kelly, and several nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Joe will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Adrian K. Todd and the Rev. Ralph E. Darmstadt officiating. A private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Ambulance Services, care of Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, N.Y.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Edith Theisselmann

MILFORD CENTER — Edith Martha Theisselmann of Milford Center died on Thursday, March 2, 2000.

She was born in Ruenderoth, Germany on Oct. 14, 1910, the daughter of August and Martha (Demmer) Bickenbach.

She came to the United States in January of 1935, and married Bernhard Theisselmann on the day she arrived. They lived in New York City and Long Island until December of 1944, when they moved to Stamford. They lived there until 1962, when she returned to Germany to care for her dying mother. She remained there until 1974, when she, her husband and her father came to Milford Center to live with her daughter, Edna Austin.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernhard, in 1975; her father, August, in 1981; and her son-in-law, Leon Austin, in 1990.

Edith was a homemaker, in the fullest sense of the word, for most of her life, and raised, almost single-handedly, both her daughter and a friend's son. She spent her entire lifetime caring for others, and will be remembered by many for her kindness and selflessness.

Although she had no grandchildren, she was affectionately known as "Grandma" to many friends. She was happiest when feeding and caring for family and friends.

Edith is survived by her daughter, Edna Austin, and her friend, Fred Woodbeck; and the man she raised as a son, Vincent Ruggiero, and his family; and cousins in Germany.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Sunday, March 5, 2000, at 2 p.m. John Wessells of Otego will officiate. There will be no visiting hours or viewing.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Susan P. Grup

HARTWICK — Susan P. Grup, 71, of county Route 16, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1929, in Gloversville, a daughter of the late Harold and Patricia Andrews Lake.

Susan was raised and educated in Johnstown.

On Dec. 31, 1949, she married William Grup in Englewood,  Colo. She and her husband have resided in Hartwick since 1961, coming from Ilion.

For 13 years Susan had worked as a billing clerk in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, retiring in 1990.

She was a member and past matron of the Richfield Springs Arbatus Chapter #417 O.E.S.

During her leisure time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her family.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, William; one son, William, and his wife, Laura Grup of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Sharon and Alan Dutton of Cooperstown and Theresa and George Schweitzer of Felton, Pa.; a brother, Harold Lake of Euphrata; a sister, MaryElla Godemann of Otter Lake; five grandchildren, Lindsey and Neil Dutton, Kristen and Kyle Grup and Patrick Schweitzer.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Suzanne Grup, in 1956.

Funeral service and interment will be private. There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to Schuyler Lake First Responders or Richfield Springs Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

George H. Decker

BOOTHWYN, Pa. — George H. Decker, 90, of Boothwyn, Pa., died on Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Crozier-Chester Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabelle, in 1998.

Mr. Decker was a dairy farmer in  Jefferson, N.Y., until his retirement in 1969.

While living there, he served for many years as a member of the local school board, the town board and as a justice of the peace. The couple moved to the Boothwyn, Pa., area in the mid-1980s.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Decker of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, Frank A. Decker; a sister, Mary Helen Veley of Cobleskill, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be private.

Lynn Aldrich

DAVENPORT — Sabrina Diane Lynn Aldrich, 3 months and 20 days old, died Thursday morning, March 2, 2000, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She was born Nov. 11, 1999, in Oneonta, the daughter of Gordon Aldrich Jr. and Sharolynn (Guile) Felter.

Sabrina had touched so many people and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her parents, Gordon "Butch" Aldrich Jr. and Sharolynn Felter of Davenport; her twin sister, Necole Aldrich of Davenport and her sister, Melissa Aldrich of Davenport; four brothers, Perry and Russell Felter of Davenport, Larry VanKueren of Walton and Gordon Aldrich III of Davenport; her paternal grandparents, Wayne and Diane Alcott of Davenport; her maternal grandparents, Virgil and Dorothy Oakley of Hobart and Ellis and Kathleen Guile of North Blenheim; paternal great-grandmother, Carrie Aldrich of the Delaware Countryside Care Center, Delhi; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sabrina was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Gordon Aldrich Sr.

Funeral and committal services will be held Sunday, March 5, 2000, at 7 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

The family will be present at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until service time for those who wish to call.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the East Meredith Emergency Squad, East Meredith, N.Y. 13757 in loving memory of Sabrina Diane Lynn Aldrich.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
