Elnora E. Henness

SCHENEVUS — Elnora E. Henness, 85, of Schenevus, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 26, 1915, in Gilboa, the daughter of William and Anna (Bevins) Egnor.

She was married to Theodore R. Henness on Feb. 13, 1932, in Middleburg, with whom she shared a union of 60 years before his passing on Nov. 7, 1992.

Together, they operated a farm in East Meredith for many years before retiring to Franklin and then to Schenevus in 1983.

Elnora and Theodore had one adopted son, Douglas R. Henness.

Elnora was a woman whose life revolved around her loved ones. She was a constant source of strength and admired for her independent nature. She adored her grandchildren and shared a special bond with them. She enjoyed baking, canning and took great pride in her garden.

She enjoyed sewing and especially crocheting. Although her accomplishments as a farmer's wife were many, she considered her long marriage to be the most prominent moment in her life.

She is survived by four grandchildren, Michele Golombek Cook, Melissa Hallenbeck and Dale Henness, all of Rome, and Lisa Russell of Yulle, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elnora's family would like to thank Margaret Scott, her good friend and neighbor for the unselfish care and kindness shown to Elnora; and her nephew Ed Nolte for his tireless attention.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus, with the Rev. Richard Burke, pastor of the Schenevus and Westford United Methodist churches, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Delhi at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in memory of Elnora to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 Co. Hwy. 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

James W. Millen

COOPERSTOWN — James Wilson Millen of Cooperstown, died March 6, 2000.

Mr. Millen was born Feb. 12, 1926 in Greensburg, Pa., a son of Harry and Edna Hayes Millen.

Upon graduation from high school, he was drafted as part of the tank destroyer forces in Europe during World War II as a chaplain's assistant.

He was a 1950 graduate of Westminster College with a bachelor's degree in psychology and philosophy and a minor in pipe organ. He attended the Episcopal Divinity School of Philadelphia as a postulant for the priesthood for two years. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Ithaca College in 1955 and was a teacher for 26 years — 21 of them with the Cooperstown Central School system. In 1981, he retired from teaching and joined the in-patient nursing staff at Bassett Hospital with the psychiatric unit, enjoying his eight-year tenure there very much.

He has been a church organist and choral director all of his adult life — serving churches in Cooperstown, Oneonta, Geneseo and elsewhere. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists. Mr. Millen recently was confirmed a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Cooperstown.

Surviving is his wife, Alma Ottzen Millen, who he married at Christ Church, Cooperstown, in 1964. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Anne Margaret Millen-Martini and Lorenzo Antonio Martini of Rome, Italy; a son, Peter Hayes Millen of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Paul C. Gouldin of Binghamton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements are with Tillapaugh Funeral Home of Cooperstown. At his request, there are no formal services or calling hours. His ashes will be interred at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

In his memory, those wishing may contribute to the Cooperstown Council of Churches through their pastor.

Mary C. Zullo

DELHI — Mary C. Zullo, 79, of Delhi, died March 4, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 7, 1920, in New York, the daughter of Charles and Catherine Caritti Biazzo.

She was married to Matteo Zullo, who died in 1986.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church of Oneonta.

She is survived by her five children, Joseph (Joan) Zullo of Florida, Mathew (Eileen) Zullo of New Jersey, Ronald (Kathy) Zullo of Ohio, Carol Zullo of Florida and Albert Zullo of Delhi; one brother, Joseph (Stella) Biazzo of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2000, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Walnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco as celebrant.

Spring interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Nils Gordon Nilsen

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Nils Gordon Nilsen, 71, of  Johnson Street Extension, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown after a long illness.

He was born on July 6, 1928, in Brooklyn, son of the late Nils A. and Tomolly Tollaksen Nilsen.

Gordon was raised in Worcester, and at the age of 13, moved with his family to Brooklyn. He graduated from high school and furthered his education at Marietta College in Ohio.

A veteran of both World War II and Korea he served with the United States Marine Corps, from 1946 to 1948, re-entered the service in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1951.

On Oct. 1, 1955, he married Janet Hind in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Brooklyn.

For 33 years he worked on Long Island for the New York Telephone Co., retiring as a conduit and manhole design engineer in 1985.

His leisure time was spent fishing, boating, raising tropical fish, going to garage sales and raising heifers on his Hobby Farm.

He was a member of the Hugick, Purcell, Shepard American Legion Post #616, Richfield Springs, a life member of the Ilion Marine Corps League and the Telephone Pioneers of America,

Surviving him besides his loving wife of 44 years, Janet, are a daughter, Jeryl, and her husband, Edgar Dropp, of Richfield Springs; a son, Gary, and his wife, Heidi Nilsen, of Smithtown; two sisters, Norma Dobbins of Smithtown and Evelyn Nilsen of St. James; four grandchildren, Kari and Karl Nilsen of Smithtown and Richard and Tara Dropp of Richfield Springs; one great-granddaughter, Katrina Dropp; three nephews, Thomas Dobbins of Apple Valley,  Calif., Williams Dobbins of Oceanside,  Calif., and Richard Dobbins of St. James.

Funeral service will be on Thursday at 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, later this spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department or the Herkimer County Hospice Memorial Program. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Members of the Hugick, Purcell, Shepard American Legion Post are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for services. Members of the Ilion Marine Corps League are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:45 p.m. for their service.

Anthony Huscha Sr.

BAINBRIDGE — Anthony J. Huscha Sr., 83, of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, March 6, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Staten Island to the late Bronislaus and Elizabeth (Climielewski) Huszcza.

Tony married Lucille Alcayaga on Oct. 26, 1968, in Staten Island.

He was an attendant at the Middletown Psychiatric Center until he retired on April 29, 1979.

Tony was a past member of the Sidney Moose Lodge and was a security guard at Bordens Chemical Co. for a couple of years.

Tony is survived by his wife, Lucille Huscha of Bainbridge; three sons and daughter-in-law, Eugene Huszcza of Missouri, Gregory Mazaerkis of Athens, Greece, and Anthony and Tammy Huscha of Middletown; four daughters and son-in-law, Carol Roschewsk of Staten Island, Tina Owen of Nevada, Lucille and Richard Durbin of Bainbridge and Virginia Huscha of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother; three sisters; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 9, 2000, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Bainbridge, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Donald Bourgeois, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church in Tony's name.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Adela Duffo

ONEONTA — Adela Duffo, 89, of Oneonta, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 10, 1910, in Bogota, Columbia, the daughter of Pierce and Ernestia (Amigo) Duffo.

She married Ferdinand Cassamere Galbus.

An Oneonta resident for the past five years, she previously resided in New York City, Columbia and Spain.

Adela is survived by her former husband of Brooklyn; two sons, Gerald (Zeke) Galbus of Oneonta and Fred Galbus of Sana Cruz,  Calif.; and one daughter, Linda Galbus of Los Angeles,  Calif.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Pearle M. Ives

ROXBURY — Pearle M. Ives, 88, of Roxbury, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born Oct. 10, 1911, in Lexington, the daughter of Joseph E. Dent and Edith Truesdell.

She married Franklyn Ives on Oct. 7, 1934, in Grand Gorge. He died February 1953.

She graduated from Grand Gorge School. She was a laundress at Ideal Hospital, Endicott. She retired in 1973, before moving to Roxbury.

She was a member of the Halcottsville Methodist Church and the Roxbury Senior Citizens Club.

Pearle is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Harvey Slauson of North Fort Myers, Fla.; one son, George Ives of Endicott; nine grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Reuben, Chauncey, Woodrow and Hollingsworth.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2000, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge. Friends may call at their convenience on Thursday and family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made in Pearle's memory to the Halcottsville United Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Hilda Franck

PEMBROKE, Bermuda — Mrs. Hilda Franck, of Cooperstown and Pembroke, Bermuda, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, March 6, 2000, at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Paget, Bermuda, in her 87th year.

Mrs. Franck was the beloved wife of 63 years of August Franck and was the cherished mother of Mrs. Greta Michaels, Dr. Walter and Linda Franck and Drs. Robert and Denise Franck. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2000, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Richmond E. Pier

SCHENEVUS — Richmond E. Pier, 76, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home in Schenevus after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Schenevus, the son of Clarence and Gladys (Alcott) Pier.

He married Mary L. Hubbard on June 7, 1952, in Schenevus.

Rich was a World War II United States Army veteran. He served in the European Theater as a surgical technician with the 91st Medic Evacuation Hospital. He received a unit citation for outstanding service and fought in five major campaigns. He was discharged November 1945, with the rank of technical sergeant fifth grade.

Rich retired from the Schenevus Cemetery, where he was the sexton for many years. Previously he and his wife owned and operated the M&R Grocery Store in Schenevus for 10 years. Before that he worked for the Schenevus Cable Co. and the local water district.

He was a charter member of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 48 years; three daughters, Carol VanEtten, Debbie and her husband, Bill Mason and Chris and her husband Jim, Trask, all of Schenevus; a son, Corey Pier of Schenevus; grandchildren, Kelly and Michael VanEtten, Jessica and Jimmy Trask, and CJ and Erin Mason; three brothers, Maynard Pier of Schenevus, Donald and his wife, Alice Pier, of Milford and Millard and his wife, Marilyn Pier, of Albany; sister, Arlene Adelfio of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Connie; brother, Edmond; and sister, Shirley.

Calling hours will be on Friday, March 10, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 11, at the Heller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery, with full military honors presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Contributions may be made in memory of Rich to the Louis Bush Hager Cancer Center at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown or the Southeastern Otsego Health Center in Worcester.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Margaret Preston

ONEONTA — Margaret L. Preston, 86, of Oneonta, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born Oct. 28, 1913, in York, Pa., the daughter of John and Francis (Rishell) Raeger.

She married Michael Preston in 1947. Mr. Preston died in 1963.

Mrs. Preston graduated from Stevens High School in Lancaster, Pa., and Duke University in Durham, N.C., and received her registered nursing degree from New York Hospital and Cornell Medical School of Nursing in 1936. She also did graduate studies at UCLA and Penn State.

During World War II, Mrs. Preston was a member of the United States Army Nursing Corp., where she was chief nursing supervisor for a 2,000-bed Army Hospital in England.

She came to Oneonta in 1963, where she organized and directed the Oneonta School of Practical Nursing at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. Mr. Preston was also director of nursing at A.O. Fox Hospital and Bassett Hospital having retired in 1975.

During the years between World War II and her arrival in Oneonta, Mrs. Preston taught nursing in Southern Illinois University and Lancaster, Pa. General Hospital School of Nursing.

She is survived by two sons, Michael of Woodbury, N.J., and Robert of Prattsville, Ala.; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Heckert of Cumberland, Md.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta and also the Oneonta American Legion Post #259.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, March 11, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, after 3 p.m., Friday.
