Joseph M. Parriott

COOPERSTOWN — Joseph Marshall Parriott, 79, of Cooperstown, industrial designer and educator, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on March 14, 1920, in Moundsville, W.Va., a son of James and Bessie (Sadler) Parriott.

He married Mary Buckley on Feb. 14, 1970, in the Silvermine area of Norwalk, Conn.

Mr. Parriott was raised in Colorado, where he attended Colorado University. He moved east to study at Pratt Institute in New York City, an experience that sealed a lifelong passion for the exciting and evolving field of twentieth century industrial design.

During World War II, Mr. Parriott served as a lieutenant with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the European Theater designing topographical maps.

From 1948 until 1949, he worked directly with the distinguished designer Norman Bel Geddes, was a senior designer for US Plywood from 1949 until 1951, also serving as chief designer for Edmilton Laboratories in Ridgefield, Conn. From 1958 until 1966, he worked for the seminal design firm, Raymond Loewy/Wm. Snaith Inc. as manager of product, transportation and exhibition design, and from 1966 until 1971, he was a principal with Becker & Becker Associates.

Mr. Parriott served as professor of industrial design and was chairman of that department at Pratt Institute for 24 years, where he was also designated professor emeritus. While at Pratt he reorganized the under graduate and graduate departments. Originally on a search committee for Pratt, he was subsequently tapped for the position and received tenure and a full professorship in his first year.

Among other accomplishments, he opened up the graduate School of Industrial Design to a broader pool of applicants, including English and psychology majors. He addressed the students' more varied backgrounds by introducing special classes in drawing.

Many of Mr. Parriott's students were involved in design projects associated with The Margaret Gates Institute in Huntington, an organization devoted to improving the interior spaces of hospitals for the mentally and physically ill. Founder of the nonprofit organization, with his wife, Mary Buckley Parriott, he served as president of The Margaret Gates Institute from 1971 until 1982.

Mr. Parriott always maintained an involvement with the creative, managerial part of the professional world of design: Problem solving and working with people — he loved it with his soul. He most recently served as industrial design consultant in collaboration with Environment Planning Inc. Content to do modest things and do them well, Mr. Parriott was nevertheless at the forefront of many aspects of 20th century design, from the quotidian to the esoteric. He was principal designer for the WaterPik, the Steam-O-Matic iron and Chelsea Clocks. He created merchandising interiors and trade fair designs for, among others, Scribners Book Store, Colonial Williamsburg (shops), the Uptown Princeton Inn in New York and four U.S. Government Trade Fairs.

He designed transportation equipment for Studebaker-Packard Corp., for Budd (railroad cars), for the Avanti and taxi and subway models for New York City, the latter involving his Pratt students. Working on business space planning and interiors, he served as principle designer on projects for Dell Publishing Co., Marine Midland Banks and Shell Oil Company service stations, among others.

The visual world fascinated him and a trip to the grocery store became a study in packaging design. Mr. Parriott was the principle designer for numerous consumer packaging designs and created designs for companies including Revlon, Shell Chemical and Bes-Pak. His industrial packaging design clients included Paniflex Corp., U.S. Plywood and Westvaco. He created business equipment designs for Pitney-Bowes, Dictaphone and Raytheon (USAF).

He organized the amalgamation of the Industrial Design Society of America and served as its first president.

Interior and exterior design projects within the last year included designing his wife's studio space, which was "church-like, because art is sacred." For their Cooperstown home, Mr. Parriott designed a series of asymmetrical geometric garden beds.

He loved sailing, swimming and skiing. He also loved cars, both looking at them and driving them. To him a car represented an art form, embodying the Bauhaus aesthetic he held dear, that form should follow function. Remaining true to this aesthetic, he developed an imaginary carousel of dream projects, foremost among these was the dream of producing a taxi for the handicapped. In addition to the logic of the visual world, Mr. Parriott enjoyed music, especially opera.

Mr. Parriott was awarded the President's Medal for Design for the Handicapped ( Washington, D.C.) as well as the Pratt Institute Alumni Medal and the Bronze Medal for Design Excellence from the Industrial Designers Institute.

He served as chairman of the United States Delegation to the International Congress of Societies of Industrial Design and was a regent for the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. With President Warren Illchman, he participated in the organization of the Mary Buckley Scholarship Fund at Pratt Institute.

Mr. Parriott was a member of the Century Club, the New Haven Lawn Club and the Cooperstown Country Club. He had served as a trustee for the Village of Huntington Bay for 13 years, where he was also a member of the Huntington Yacht Club and Huntington Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Buckley Parriott of Cooperstown; his sister, Susan Parriott Grimm of California; and two brothers, James Parriott of California and Foster Parriott of Colorado.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2000, in St. Agnes Chapel at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

A memorial service will also be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2000, in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City, with the Very Rev. Harry Pritchett Jr., dean of the Cathedral, officiating. A gathering will follow in St. Columba Chapel at the Cathedral.

Mr. Parriott's cremains will be entombed in the Columbium at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Mary Buckley Scholarship Fund at Pratt Institute, Department of Institutional Advancement, Pratt Institute, 200 Willoughby Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11205.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
