Verdell Perry, 75, of 73 School Street, Saranac Lake, NY, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born on March 15, 1931, he was the son of Albert and Luella Perry.
Verdell had resided at 73 School Street since 2004. Prior to moving here he lived on Pelkey Lane and Virginia Street in Saranac Lake and on Boyer Avenue in Tupper Lake.
Verdell had lead a very busy life up until more recent years. For twenty-five years he attended the Seniors Program at North Star Industries, where he received several awards for his many years there. Verdell really enjoyed watching movies in his bedroom, some of his favorite videos were, John Wayne videos, "Godzilla", and "Agent 007". Some of Verdell's favorite things were sneaking up on people, and making them laugh. His humor and smile will be greatly missed. He is survived by his sister Iolanthe Eldrid of Malone, two brothers, Ronald Perry of Brasher Falls, and Dennis Perry, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Luella Perry, two brothers, Leonard and Orvie Perry and three sisters Rosalie, Regina and Violet Perry. He was also predeceased by his very close friend Raymond Bessy.
Calling hours will be 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will immediately follow. A burial is planned, pending weather, for Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 10:00 AM in Eastside Cemetery in Chateaugay, NY

Daniel William Kaestle, Jr., age 63, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2006. He was born in Jamaica, New York to the parents of Daniel William Kaestle, Sr. and Elizabeth Hynes Kaestle. He lived most of his life in Saranac, NY/ Lake Placid, NY, where he was known and loved by all in the community. He was a great cook and an outstanding musician. He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Elizabeth Kaestle; his beloved sister, Jane Kaestle Woods. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hardy Kaestle; his son, Daniel William Kaestle, III; his daughter, Sabrina Marie Kaestle-Peterman, his sister, Joan Reyell, his granddaughter, Emma Peterman; his grandson, Caleb Peterman and countless friends. Dan successfully owned and operated several restaurants, music stores, and resorts, including the Olde Village Inn, Sturbridge, MA, the Wawbeek on Upper Saranac Lake, NY and Perdido Bay Country Club, Perdido. FL. Currently, he was owner of Adirondack Boat Rentals, Lake Placid, NY. A Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. December 28, 2006 in Saranac Lake, NY for family members. A memorial reception for Daniel’s family and friends will be held at the Red Fox Restaurant on December 28, 2006 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Saranac Lake Young Arts Association and Life Flight, Saranac Lake.

Edwin Ted Stratford III, age 74, of 159 Ampersand Ave., Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at home. Born in Morristown, NJ on December 29, 1931, he was the son of Edwin and Eleanor (Little) Stratford II. Mr. Stratford received his Masters degree from St. Lawrence University, double major biology and physical education. He had been employed as a teacher at Ogdensburg Free Academy, then Potsdam Central High School. He later was a Professor and head football and wrestling coach at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. He also was the Director of St. Lawrence University Camp on Upper Saranac Lake, NY for 10 summers and had been a Professor and head football coach at Hamilton College in Clinton NY. He retired from teaching at the Saranac Lake Central School District in June 2004. He holds the record for most wins in St. Lawrence football history and was inducted into the St. Lawrence University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He loved sports and the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman. His greatest pleasure was being a part of the lives of his family and the students he taught and coached. He is survived by two sons: Ted H. Stratford IV and his wife Marsha of Reno, NV, Gregory S. Stratford and his wife Susan of Bloomingdale, NY; three daughters Patricia A. Petrillo, and her husband Jay of Katonah NY, Nancy K. Fairfield and her husband Douglas, of Boston, MA and Lori Stratford of Escondido, CA: one step-son Scott Nicolash and his fiancé Suzanne Muldowney of Saranac Lake, NY. He is also survived by his former wife Joan K Stratford of Saranac Lake, NY; one sister Nancy Zambelli and her husband Oscar, of HoHoKus, NJ and 10 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his Mother and father. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Tuesday December 26, 2006 form 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM on Wednesday December 27, 2006 at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. Friends wishing to remember Edwin Ted Stratford III may make memorial contributions to Ted Stratford Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

Charles Emmett Kelly, 81, of 25 Acorn St., Lake Placid, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid. Born Oct. 10, 1925 in New York City, he was the son of Charles E. and Margaret Burke Kelly. His father was treasurer of the New York Steam Corporation and a board member of consolidated Edison. Charlie spent his school years in Montclair, N.J., and graduated from Montclair High School in 1943. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps until the end of World War II in 1945. He married his college sweetheart, Barbara Tyrell Kelly, a native of Lake Placid and graduate of Russell Sage College, Aug. 6, 1949 at St. Agnes Church. After serving his country, he enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy and graduated in 1951 with a degree in management engineering. At RPI, Charlie was president of music clubs and a member of the glee club and orchestra. He was also lead of the Four Horseman Barbershop Quartet, a group that has survived for 58 years. They remained best friends and continued perfoming into their late 70s. At Rensselaer, Charlie made Who’s Who of Colleges and Universities. At the time of his passing, he was involved with the RPI Alumni Association, working on a campaign to secure donations to fund a special room in the institute’s new performing arts center in honor of Joel Dolven. Dolven was one of Charlie’s favorite professors; his teaching of music instilled a lifelong passion for music in all the students with whom he came into contact. Charlie spent his career managing the production areas of companies including Hamilton Standard, Colt Firearms, Fafnir Bearing and Lockheed Martin. He served during those yars as a member and president of APICS, an international association of production control specialists. In 1975, he moved his family to Denver,  Colo., where Colt had reassigned him as the director of the western sales division. At the time of his retirement in 1991, he was employed in the aerospace division of Lockheed Martin, where he was working on such projects as the MX missile. Charlie and Barbara returned to retire in her hometown of Lake Placid, where he served on the village planning board for five years and as a board member of ComLinks. He was also active in local politics, serving as North Elba Supervisor Shirley Seney’s campaign manager. At the time of his death, he was serving as data manager for the Skating Club of Lake Placid, which made him an honorary member in 2006. Charlie also used his expertise with Apple computers to provide pro bono assistance in installations, maintenance and operations for many people in the area. He also specialized in making computer-generated movies. His most recent project was creating a DVD commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Kiwanis Club of Lake Placid. He was a past member and treasurer of the Craig Wood Golf Association and of the Lake Placid American Legion. He is surived by his wife; three daughters: Kate Kelly of Cincinnati, Ohio, Barbara Balatero and her husband Pru Balatero of Seattle, Wash. and Carol Kelly of Dever,  Colo.; two sons: Joseph Kelly of Snowmass,  Colo. and Douglas Kelly and his wife Liz of Littleton,  Colo.; six grandchildren: Katy and David Balatero of Seattle, Wash., Tyrell Pentz of Cincinnati, Ohio, Charles “CJ” and Scott Kelly of Loveland,  Colo. and Nichole McDonald of Littleton, Colo; and a sister, Mary Kelly Sterhardt and her husband James of Sun City West, Ariz. A private ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in Charlie’s name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
The M.B. Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Hogan, 84, of 60 Church St., Saranac Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born June 25, 1922 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Adam and Mae (Sifert) Smith. As a young woman Helen worked as a secretary for a construction company in Queens where she met her future husband, J. Allen Hogan. They embarked on a 58 year marriage on Sept. 26, 1942, during which time they raised their family and enjoyed traveling the world. After living in New York City for 55 years, Helen and her family moved to Loon Lake to begin an active retirement, and never looked back. She kept busy over the next 29 years wearing many hats, including chairwoman of the Town of Franklin Planning Board, RSVP Volunteer, member of the Board of Assessment Review, as well as maintaining active memberships in the Franklin Co-op, Mundy’s Elves, Saranac Lake Elks Club, and the DeChantel Tenants Association. In 1996 Allen and Helen were chosen “King” and “Queen” of the Town of Franklin Founders Day, which she considered a great honor. In her “spare” time Helen enjoyed needlework, sewing, knitting, puzzles, cooking, gardening, and reading. In recent years, her most precious time was spent with her granddaughters, Shannon and Sarah, including attending their school events, teaching them to knit and sew, playing cards, and simply enjoying their time together. Helen is survived by three daughters: Barbara Hogan of Saranac Lake, Valerie Collins of Garden Grove,  Calif. and Susan Parker and her husband David of Vermontville; two granddaughters: Shannon Mae and Sarah Elizabeth Parker, both of Vermontville, all of whom will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her husband on March 24, 2001 and her parents. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec, 19 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec, 20 at St. Paul’s Church in Bloomingdale with the Rev. Mundy officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Bloomingdale. Friends wishing to make donations in memory of Helen are asked to consider High Peaks Hospice or The American Cancer Society.

Ingleton “Inky” Schenck, Jr., age 83, of 14 Kiwassa Road, Saranac Lake, New York died December 15, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Bangor, Maine on December 10, 1923 he was the son of Ingleton and Maude (Lake) Schenck, Sr. He married Marie Bell on August 18, 1945. “Inky” worked for the United States Postal Service at the Saranac Lake Post office as a letter carrier for 34 years until his retirement in 1978. He s a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army and was awarded several medals including a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for bravery. Inky was a member of the Saranac Lake Moose Club, Saranac Lake American Legion Post 447 and the Saranac Lake Elks Club BPOE 1508. He was also a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Clubs. Inky was an avid bowler, bowling in several leagues. He was a avid baseball fan and loved the New York Yankee’s. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law; Karen Ormsby of Morrisonville, Eileen and Reggie Bishop of Tupper Lake, Candy and Carleton Rivers of Saranac Lake; one son Ingleton “Tony” Schenck of Saranac Lake; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his Loving wife Marie in 1994. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jackie Gonyea and her husband Jack Gonyea from Virginia Beach, sister-in-Laws Helen Larsen and Bette Haig of Saranac Lake and brother-in-law Fran Orsini from Hilton, NY. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Monday December 18, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Veteran’s Service will take pace at 7:30 PM and an Elks Service will immediately follow at 7:45 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday December 19 at the funeral home. Following cremation burial will be Pine Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home

Phyllis W. Driscoll, 72, of Keene Valley Neighborhood House, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, NY. Born in Saranac Lake, August 18, 1934, she was the daughter of Norman R. and Frances (Burgh) Bush. Phyllis was a graduate of Saranac Lake Highschool class of 1951. After marrying Robert Driscoll in Saranac Lake in the winter of 1954, she moved around quite a bit before settling in the Plattsburgh/Saranac Lake area in 1970. Phyllis enjoyed knitting, she was a varacious reader and she enjoyed sports such as bowling and varrious winter sports. Phyllis was a single mother and she was great at it, for many years she worked from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and would run right home to tend to her children. Her boys enjoyed their share of school sports and Phyllis would make each one his own dinner according to his own schedule. She raised her boys right and kept them out of trouble. Phyllis Driscoll is survived by one brother Gerald and his wife Hellen of Tupper Lake, NY, three sons: Stephen and his wife Christine of Winchester, NH, Thomas and his children Jesica, Barry, Megan and Anne-Marie all of Berlin, NH, Robert, his wife Christine and their children Timothy and Kimberly, all of Germantown, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home Friday, December 15, 2006 from 3:00-5:00 PM, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial in the chaple at St. Bernard's Church Saturday, December 16, at 11:00 AM.

Hazel LaRose D'Onofrio, passed away Thursday, December 07, 2006 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, NY. Born in Port Henry, New York she was the daughter of the late Albert and Alta (Duprey) LaRose. Hazel resided in South Colony for many years before becoming a resident of Uihlein Mercy Center. She was preceded in death by her brothers Horton, Oliver, and Donald LaRose. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Louis of Albany, NY; three daughters, Nancy Attanasio (Armand) of Schenectady, NY, Carole Kobrzycki (Joseph) of Albany, NY; and Kimberly D'Onofrio of Albany, NY; two Grandchildren, Louis Graver (Tammy) of Feura Bush, NY, and Derek Greenwald (Edie) of Rocky Hill, CT; one brother Raymond LaRose (Mary) of Saranac Lake, NY, one sister Lillian Prue of Brockport, NY; and a sister-in-law Corrine LaRose of Albany. Hazel’s family will receive friends at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, NY on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 PM at Uihlein, with Rev. Robert Lawthers officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake. John M. Robertson, age 51, of 60 Split Rock Road, Saranac Lake, died Friday, December 08, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center. Born in Jamesville, Wisconsin on June 09, 1955, he was the son of Arthur and Jeanne (Archie) Robertson. John's family moved to Laguna Beach, CA in 1956 and lived thee for 13 yeas. They later moved to Saranac Lake in 1969. John graduated from Saranac Lake High School and attended North Country Community College. He was a Chef in California and returned to Saranac Lake in 1990 where he was independently employed. He was a talented potter, painter, and woodworker. He was deeply loved and will be very missed by his family. His parents, two brothers Tim Robertson of New Paltz, NY, and Dave Robertson of Albany, NY, and one sister Ann Greenbaum of Nanuet, NY, survive him. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Following cremation burial will take place in Brighton Cemetery. Friends wishing to remember John M. Robertson may make memorial contributions to Saranac Lake Vol. Fire Dept. Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.

Edith M. Cole, age 83, of 166 Broadway, Saranac Lake, died Sunday, December 03, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Dexter, New York on March 26, 1923, she was the daughter of Joseph and Jenny (Vagara) Kostyk. Edith married Thomas Cole. He predeceased her on November 10, 1966. Mrs. Cole had been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1940 when she moved here from Dexter, NY. She was employed as a nursing assistant at Ogdensburg Psychiatric Hospital, Stonywald Sanitarium, Gabriels Sanitarium, Will Rogers Hospital and Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid until her retirement in 1988. She enjoyed growing flowers. She is survived by five sons Martin of Tenn., George “Sid” Cole and his wife Sandra of Saranac Lake, NY; Dennis Cole and his wife Sue of Baltic, CT, Robert “Wally” Cole of Saranac Lake, NY, and Nicholas Cole and his wife Karen of Saranac Lake, NY; two daughters Gail Strickland and her husband Eric; and Mary Durett and her husband Pat of Franklin, CT; 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and two sisters Vera Kostyk and Margaret Kostyk both of Dexter, NY. Several nieces and nephews also survive her. She was preceded in death by one son Richard. The family will receive friends at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday December 9, 2006. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Jeff Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery. Friends wishing to remember Edith M. Kyle Leonard Sweeney, 26, of Edgewood Way in Lake Placid died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006 of a heart attack in San Diego,  Calif. Born Dec. 12, 1979 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Leonard and Deborah (Jewtraw) Sweeney. Kyle was a graduate of Lake Placid High School, Class of 1998. He had worked as a carpenter for William Stanton Construction in Lake Placid. Kyle was a free spirit who loved life. He was a kind and gentle person who would do anything for you. He also was an avid snowboarder and loved to travel. His best friends and loyal companions were his two dogs, Terja and Summit. Kyle is survived by his loving parents of Lake Placid; two sisters: Angela Guilfoyle and her husband, Rory of Malta and Paula Sweeney of Plattsburgh; a brother, Leonard Sweeney Jr. and his wife, Amy of Morrisonville; his maternal grandmother, Peggy Jewtraw of Lake Placid; his maternal great-grandmother, Margaret Matrow of Salem; four nephews; two nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid with the Rev. Joseph Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in North Elba Cemetery. The family suggests friends wishing to remember Kyle make donations in his memory to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society, 255 George Lapan Memorial Highway, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.

Geraldine Exware, 64, of Tupper Lake, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006 at her home in the company of her loving family following a short illness. Born Aug. 8, 1942 in Holyoke, Mass., she was the second of six daughters of Gladys and Victor Blair. Geraldine married Roger Exware Feb. I5, 1969 at Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. During their time together, the couple enjoyed each other’s company while raising their two daughters, Amy and Darla. A mother and homemaker at heart, Geraldine also worked at the Shoe Factory, Sekon Lodge and U.S. Plywood before devoting her time to family and religion. Geraldine is survived by her daughters: Amy Exware-Rolley and her husband Nicholas and Darla Exware-Roy and her husband Steve, all of Tupper Lake; her grandson, Anthony Roy; her granddaughter, Jocely Roy; her parents; her sisters: Gloria Exware and her companion Terry Pickering, Vicky Gonyea and her husband Lee, all of Tupper Lake, and Rita Theriault and her husband Sam of Newark, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. Geraldine was predeceased by her husband in 1995 and two sisters: an older sister Margaret and Patricia Blair-Varden in 2003. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Those wishing to make donations in Geraldine’s memory may do so to the Tupper Lake Volunteer Ambulance and Emergency Squad, High Peaks Hospice or the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements are with the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
