Marion Roseboom

MORRIS — Marion E. Roseboom, 83, of Maple Grove, Morris, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 7, 1917, in Morris, the daughter of William George Emerson and Beatrice M. (Andrews) Emerson.

She was married to Leon Miles Roseboom on Aug. 9, 1934, in West Oneonta. He passed away several years ago.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Sand Hill Methodist Church, the Sand Hill Senior Citizens Club and the Homemaker Club of Sand Hill.

She is survived by three children, Wayne Roseboom of Oneonta, Morgan Roseboom and his wife, Diana, of Oneonta, and Bonnie Hilliker of Oneonta; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by two sisters-in- law, Edna Emerson of Sidney and Alma Strong of Westford.

She was predeceased by a brother, Maynard Emerson, and a brother-in-law, James Strong.

It was Marion's request that no funeral services or calling hours be held.

Interment of her cremains will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Esther C. Whipple

HAMILTON — Mrs. Esther C. Whipple, 82, of Pine Street, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

Born Nov. 7, 1917, in Auburn, she was the daughter of Jay Lake and Lillian Alden Harter. She was a direct descendent of John Alden.

Esther was educated in Auburn public schools and was a graduate of the Cortland School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse at Auburn Hospital until her marriage to Edwin E. Whipple on Jan. 1, 1943. He predeceased her on April 23, 1990.

She was a homemaker, and later worked for Dr. John T. Oates as a dental assistant from 1958 until her retirement in 1979.

Mrs. Whipple was a member of the Park United Methodist Church of Hamilton. She was a 57-year active member of the Hamilton Chapter #511 of the Order of Eastern Star where she served as past matron in 1956, and as grand chaplain in 1993.

In later years, she took great pleasure in devoting herself to community service and needs by transporting people to medical appointments, attending to personal needs, and volunteering at various community and church activities.

Her children and grandchildren were her greatest source of pride, and she actively attended their school and athletic functions over the years.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Drew Uhlig and Deborah and David Rhyde, all of Hamilton; two sons and daughters-in-law, David R. and Ellen Whipple of Davenport and Jay S. and Patricia Whipple of Hamilton; a sister, Priscilla Isgar of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Virginia (Whipple) and Robert Honsinger of Artesia, Miss.; nine grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alden Harter.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 18, 2000, from the Park United Methodist Church, Broad Street, Hamilton, with an Eastern Star service.

Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Hamilton.

Friends are invited and may call at the Burgess Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Eastern Star Home, 1400 Utica St., Oriskany, N.Y. 13424; or to the Park United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 54, Hamilton N.Y. 13346.

Melissa Wolcott

SIDNEY — Melissa Wolcott, 70, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

She was born Jan. 19, 1930, in Walton.

Melissa is predeceased by her husband, Thomas Wolcott.

Melissa is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Sharon Wolcott of Sidney; daughter, Nancy Wolcott of Sidney, daughter, Susan Steele of Hancock; brother, Percy Wood of Inberness, Fla.; sisters, Irva Wood of Walton, Amelia Francisco of Sidney and Joyce Dufton of Cadosia; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 17, at noon at Walton Cemetery, Walton. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney on Friday.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Charles W. Brown

ONEONTA — Charles W. Brown, 63, of Oneonta, died Thursday morning, March 16, 2000, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born April 11, 1936, in Downsville. He was the son of Willis P. and Arretta (Ferguson) Brown.

He married Betty J. Hoffman on Nov. 27, 1965, in Oneonta.

Charles started farming in Brookfield, and later moved to Oneonta. He worked at the State University College at Oneonta but is best known for his work at the former Molinari's Restaurant formerly of South Main Street. He also was employed at the Department of Transportation and Sism's Lumber Co. of Otego, as well as the Davenport Town Barn.

He was a former member of Hartwick Fire Department. Charles was a man who loved to be around family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and talking on the CB radio.

Charles is survived by his wife of 34 years, Betty Brown of Oneonta; one son and his wife, Charles R. and Christine Brown; four grandchildren, Evan, Jacob, Jonathan and Amber, all of Morris; Brothers and sisters, Robert Brown, Doris Chase, LeRoy Brown, George Brown, Ernie Brown, Bessie Brown, Judy Morgan, Laura Jane Brown, William Ferguson and Bert Ferguson; seven brothers- and sister-in-laws, Shirley Darling and the late George Darling of Hartwick, Doris Ferguson and the late Arthur Ferguson, Bud Smith of Oneonta, Clarence Hoffman and Carol  Johnson of Maryland, Raymond and Marcy Hoffman of Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews and three great-great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Willis and Arretta Brown; three sisters, Tilley Brown, Marjorie Brown and Viola Delbeck; and his in-laws, Merlin and Rosina Hoffman.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 18, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Reese, pastor of Columbus Community Church, New Berlin, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2000, when the family will be present at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Winifred Brandt

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Winifred Brandt, 81, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and formerly of Richfield Springs died on Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in her home.

She was born on Aug. 10, 1918, in New York City, daughter of the late Michael and Florence Smith Kearney.

Winifred was raised in New York City, was a graduate of New York City Public Schools and furthered her education at Hunter College.

On Jan. 31, 1938, she married John Brandt in New York, a loving and devoted union of 49 years until his passing on Aug. 14, 1987. She and her husband had moved to Richfield Springs in 1974, coming from Gary, Ind. In 1987, she moved to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where she has resided since.

Mrs. Brandt was a member of Saint Joseph's Church while living in Richfield Springs and was a past volunteer with the Women's Auxiliary of the Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls.

Her leisure time was spent crocheting and was an avid reader.

Surviving her are two sons and their wives, Lawrence and Lois Brandt of Chesterton, Ind. and Matthew and Heather Brandt of Longmont,  Colo.; a daughter; Judith and her husband, Bill Guertal, of Akron, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, John, she was preceded in death by two sons, James Brandt in 1996 and John Brandt in 1997; a daughter, Winifred Waterhouse in 1998; a granddaughter, Tracy Brandt in 1998; and a dear friend, Jim Tuttle in 1999.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Monday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Terrance Healy, officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jane E. Utter

FRANKLIN — Jane E. Utter, 62, of Franklin, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

She was born in the town of Hamden on April 18, 1937, the daughter of Theodore J. and Elizabeth L. (Gray) Eckert.

She married Junior Jay Utter on May 2, 1953, in Downsville. He predeceased her on March 17, 1996.

For the past 33 years, Jane has been employed by the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. She currently was assigned to the emergency room department as a receptionist. Her smiling face, and her words of comfort and assurance to the patients and their families will be forever remembered.

As a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was considered the guiding force of her family.

She is survived by her children, Robert and Kenneth Utter of Walton, Roger Utter of Austin,  Texas, Daniel Utter of Otego, Deborah Hitt and Bonnie Craig of Walton; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her devoted fiance for the past two years, Pat Furman of Franklin; two brothers and three sisters, Lawrence Eckert of Oneonta, Leonard Eckert and Thelma Hammond of Walton, Arlene Utter of Hamden and Sandra  Johnson of Delhi. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Katie Utter.

A service to celebrate Jane's life will be held on Friday evening, March 17, 2000, at 7 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 81 Main St., Franklin, with Mr. Tom Davis, lay pastor of the Hamden Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be later in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin,

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Emergency Room Department of Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Fred Weber

ROXBURY — Fred Weber, 93, of Roxbury, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, in Troy.

He was born June 30, 1906, in Brooklyn, the son of Richard Weber and Caroline Loeb.

He married Henrietta Fahl on June 29, 1930, in Springfield Gardens, Long Island. She died June 13, 1992.

He was a carpenter, he built houses and boats. He worked for 12 years in the post office in the Radio City area. He worked for the Civil Service during World War II, repairing battleships at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He was a dairy farmer in Roxbury for 18 years. He worked at the Belleayre Ski Center and the Blenheim Power Project.

He was a member of the Roxbury Senior Citizens Club, Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, the Delaware Valley Grange, where he served as former master and treasurer.

Fred and his wife, Henrietta, reigned as king and queen of the Roxbury Bicentennial Celebration.

Fred is survived by two daughters, Ann Alboum of Saratoga Springs and Elizabeth Kirk of Slingerlands; one son, Frederick D. Weber of Wantagh; son-in-law, Paul Ballard of Roxbury; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Caroline, in 1994.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 19, 2000, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Calling hours will be Saturday, March 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Fred to the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Elsie H. Etienne

KINGSTON — Elsie H. Etienne of Golden Hill Drive, a retired West Hurley teacher, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at the Goldon Hill Health Care Center. She was 91.

Mrs. Etienne was a teacher in the West Hurley school system until her retirement in 1972.

She was a graduate of Morris Central School and Oneonta Normal School and received her bachelor's degree and master's degrees at the State University College at New Paltz.

She was a member of the New York State Teachers Association, the Ulster County Teachers Association, the American Association of University Women, YWCA, the Daughters of the American Revolution Wiltwyck Chapter and St. John's Episcopal Church.

She was the wife of Peter Etienne, who died in 1974.

Born June 24, 1908, in Morris, she was a daughter of Edgar and Mae Gregory Harris.

Survivors include a daughter, Lorraine Rignall of South Glastonbury, Conn.

A brother, Maurice Harris, died previously.

The funeral will be 10 a.m., Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Joan Jackson, pastor, officiating. On April 18, at 1 p.m. a funeral service will be at the Zion Episcopal Church, Morris, with the Rev. Scott, officiating.

Arrangements are by A. Carr and Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave., Kingston, and Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Evelyn M. Stone

MORRIS — Evelyn M. Stone, 72, of Morris, died March 16, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital.

She was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Morris, the daughter of Lynn Albert Foote and Clara Marie (Enos) Foote.

She married William E. Stone Sr. at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Oneonta on June 28, 1945.

She had worked as a key-punch operator for Amphenol Corp. of Sidney. She and her husband operated the Village Coffee Shop in Morris from 1970 to 1977.

She was a member of the Morris Fire Department Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, Holy Cross R.C. Church and the Morris Snowmobile Club. She was also a 4-H leader and a Girl Scout leader.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, William E. Stone Sr. and her children, William E. Stone Jr., James K. Stone, Nancey M. Pickens, Lynne M. Stone, Debra M. Convis, Mary M. Gray, Jane M. Scott, Stanley R. Stone and Michael M. Stone; 25 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a sister, Mary Hoffman.

A son, Samuel R. Stone, predeceased her.

A funeral memorial service will be held Sunday, March 19, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Cross R.C. Church in Morris. The Rev. John Burns will officiate.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, March 18, at the Johnston Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. A wake service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris at a later date.

Friends are invited to attend a reception immediately after the funeral service in the church reception hall. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Morris Fire Department or the Edmeston Fire Department in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Edna Harrington

ROXBURY — Edna M. Harrington, 85, of Roxbury, died March 16, 2000, at her home.

She was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Roxbury, the daughter of Fred Lutz and Lena Ruteshouser.

She married Roger I. Harrington June 21, 1936, in Roxbury. He died June 23, 1970.

Edna and her husband operated Harrington's Market in Roxbury. She was also employed at Bud's Restaurant and Lutz Feed and Tire in Roxbury and Oneonta.

She was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1932.

She was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church of Roxbury. Edna enjoyed quilting and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Heiseler of Roxbury and Marjorie Hewitt of Margaretville; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Lutz of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Ponzio, on Dec. 23, 1984, and one brother, Herbert Lutz.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church of Roxbury. The Rev. Richard Dykstra will officiate.

Committal service will be private at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in memory of Edna Harrington may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
