Mildred M. Aldrich

ONEONTA — Mildred M. Aldrich, 88, of Oneonta, died on Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Cooperstown Junction on Oct. 31, 1911, the daughter of the late Orrin D. and Pearl Silliman Montgomery. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald "Curly" Aldrich; and two brothers and three sisters: Waneta Montgomery, Iva Kirk, Vernard "Jack" Montgomery, Willard Montgomery, Beulah Colburn and Kathleen Sperry.

She is survived by brothers Alden Montgomery of Greenfield and Millard "Zip" Montgomery of Journey's End at Goodyear Lake; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews; great-great-nieces and -nephews; and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mildred spent her entire life in the Oneonta area. She attended the one-room schoolhouse in Milford. She was a talented musician, playing the piano and mouth organ. As a child, her parents would rent a hall and sell tickets to the family's performance of music and dance.

In 1933, when then-President Roosevelt enacted the Social Security Act, Mildred marched in the parade that was held in Oneonta.

After she and Don married, they purchased a dairy farm in 1941, on East Street, Oneonta, the closest farm to the city. While working the farm she also worked for the Otsego Laundry on Broad Street. In addition, she worked for the Oneonta Dress Factory for several years before becoming a machinist for Bendix-Scintilla in Sidney. It was there she worked for 35 years, and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local #1529.

Mildred was known for her compassion for others. For several years she took care of her mother. She also enjoyed cooking large meals for her family. She loved her garden and spent many hours with her flowers. Many times, local churches would come to pick her flowers to make bouquets for Sunday services. She also made many wedding floral arrangements. She enjoyed fishing and spending time at her camp, which is fondly remembered as "Aunt Mildred's Point" on Goodyear Lake. She enjoyed all types of craft hobbies such as crocheting, cross stitching or making baskets out of beads. Mildred will be remembered for all of her hard work.

Funeral services for Mildred will be Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Humphrey-Fox officiating. Spring interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Oneonta Emergency Squad in Mildred's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Troy R. Slentz

PITTSFIELD — Beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend Troy Randall Slentz died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Pittsfield.

He was born Sept. 2, 1968, in Cooperstown, the son of Roger W. and Judith S. (Bennett) Slentz.

He married Bonnie J. Bowen on July 16, 1994, in Edmeston.

Troy was very active in sports during his high school years, and graduated from Edmeston Central School in 1987.

In February 1988, he enlisted in the Navy where he attended boot camp in San Diego,  Calif., a school in Gulfport, Miss., and later served in Desert Storm. During his six years in the Navy he was a construction/electrician with the Sea Bees. He received an Honorable Discharge in January 1994.

Troy was currently employed by Time Warner Cable as an installer/technician. However, his true love was the great outdoors, which included trapping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and farming. He enjoyed taxidermy, and participated in bowling and golf leagues. Troy was a member of the Methodist Church. In the past he had also been active in the High School Umpire League.

Troy was most noted for having the desire to spend individual time with his friends and loved ones. He was a hero to his parents and the wind beneath their wings on many occasions.

Troy is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; his daughter, Alexis Elaine, and his expected child due this week; his parents, Roger W. and Judith S. Slentz of West Burlington; his sister and her husband, Sherri Louise and Jeffery S. Vibbard of Burlington Flats; his brother and his wife, Martin Richard and Dawn Slentz of Burlington Flats; his grandmother, Wilma Bennett of Burlington; his in-laws, Russell and Janet Bowen of Burlington; his brothers-in-law and spouse, David R. and Jesseca Bowen, and Daniel R. Bowen; his nieces and nephews, Tyler, Juli and Dayna Vibbard, Nickolas and Rachel Slentz and Derek Bowen.

He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Ronald A. Bowen; his niece, Sharon J. Vibbard; and his maternal grandfather, Randall Bennett.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jay Henderson, the Rev. William Highfield and Fr. Charles  Taylor officiating. Interment will be in the spring. Calling hours are Monday, March 20, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Troy's memory to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mildred E. Reed

WORCESTER — Mildred E. Reed, 76, of Worcester, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at the N.E. Center for Special Care, Lake Katrine.

She was born April 28, 1923, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Henry and Emma (Berger) Etling.

She married William M. Reed Jr. on Sept. 12, 1943, in Hillside, N.J. He predeceased her on Feb. 12, 1975.

Mrs. Reed moved to Worcester in 1949, from Hillside, N.J.

She was a clerk at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Oneonta.

Mrs. Reed was a member of the Worcester United Methodist Church, past president of the Worcester American Legion Post #1584 Auxiliary, past matron and member of the Order of the Eastern Star-Schenevus Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star past grand representative to the state of Delaware, the Worcester Historical Society, past secretary of the Worcester Women's Club and past president of the Worcester Nutrition Site 4.

Mrs. Reed is survived by a daughter, Terri, and her husband, Herb Burton, of Schenevus; five sons, Robert and his wife, Laura Reed, of Voorheesville, Wayne and his wife, Barbara Reed, of Security,  Colo., Bruce Reed of Schenevus, Allen and his wife, Cheryl Reed, of Worcester and William Reed III of Shoken; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Reed of Schenevus; 19 grandchildren; a brother, Robert Etling of Jackson, N.J.; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Henry; and both of her parents.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the Worcester United Methodist Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester and East Worcester United Methodist churches, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester,

Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 21, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Reed to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197 or to the charity of one's choice in memory of Mrs. Reed.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Kenneth H. Paton

COOPERSTOWN — Services for Kenneth Henson Paton are scheduled for 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center, with the Rev. Persis Willams, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in the spring.

Mr. Paton died Friday, March 17, 2000, after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 17, 1911, in Flushing, the son of George Crawford and Amelia Ann Gordon Paton.

He attended Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and New York University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1953, having attained the rank of lieutenant.

He married Mary Hyde Clarke on April 28, 1938. She died in November 1981.

He was a coffee economist and consultant. With his brother Gordon, he founded George Gordon Paton and Co., a coffee trade journal, the predecessor of Coffee Publications Inc. He served as co-editor and then editor until his retirement in the mid-70s.

After his retirement, he maintained residences on Lake Otsego and on Hilton Head Island, S.C., with golf and travel occupying his time. He moved to Ardmore, Okla., in 1996.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, one sister and four brothers.

Mr. Paton is survived by two sisters, Muriel P. Hallock and Lorraine Hughes, both of Florida; three daughters, Barbara von Briesen of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Patricia Jurey of Ardmore, Okla., and Susan Liu of Hong Kong. Survivors also include seven grandchildren, Katherine S. Addleman of Aurora,  Colo., Robert M. Smith Jr. of Bartlesville, Okla., Diana S. Walters of Coppell,  Texas, Jennifer Soor of Framingham, Mass., Frederica Goodman of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Mark von Briesen of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and Liane Liu of Hong Kong; and seven great-grandchildren, Abigail and Bethany Smith, Elizabeth and Virginia Addleman and Angela, Mitchell and Conner Walters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Discretionary Fund at St. Mary's Church, Springfield Center, N.Y. 13468.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown and Milford.

Harold T. Silliman

COLLIERSVILLE — Harold T. Silliman, 83, of Colliersville, passed away unexpectedly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta on Saturday, March 18, 2000.

He was born in Cooperstown Junction on Dec. 15, 1916, son of Maude Turk and Glenn Silliman.

Harold graduated from Oneonta High School, worked at Bendix Corp. in Sidney during World War II and spent his professional career of more than 30 years at the Department of Environmental Conservation offices in Stamford and Summit.

Harold was an active member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge, the Colliersville Cemetery Association and danced regularly with several local square dance clubs.

Harold was predeceased by his daughter, Starla; his former wife, Marilyn; his sister, Hazel Wilcox; and his brother, John Silliman.

Harold is survived by his longtime companion Betty New; his four nieces, Edith Reed of Petersburg, Va., Ruth Biddle of Endicott and Linda Tilbe and Kathy Manchester of Maryland; one nephew, Tim Duffy of Covina,  Calif.; three grandnieces; eight grandnephews; and four great-grandnephews, nieces and many friends.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2000, from the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday, March 21, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Contributions can be made in memory of Harold to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or the Colliersville Cemetery Association, care of Linda Tilbe, Sunnycrest Road, Maryland, N.Y. 12116.

Jeremy Cawley

UNADILLA — Jeremy Cawley, 21, of Unadilla, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 17, 2000.

He was born Sept. 7, 1978, in Walton, to Ernest and Elaine (Steele) Cawley.

Jeremy was a graduate of Unatego High School.

He was employed by UPS of Oneonta.

Jeremy was an avid bowler and loved to hunt.

Jeremy is survived by his parents, Ernest and Elaine Cawley of Unadilla; sister and brother-in-law, Stacy and Peter Johansen of East Springfield; brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Marcy Cawley of Sidney; brother, Chad Cawley of Unadilla; nephews, Joshua Cawley and Karl Johansen; niece, Marisa Cawley; paternal grandmother, Isabelle Cawley of Sidney; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Carl Butler, pastor of Pinesbrook Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call Monday, March 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Unadilla Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jeremy Cawley Memorial Bowling Tournament, care of Ernest Cawley, P.O. Box 793, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Frederic Bennett

COBLESKILL — Frederic R. Bennett, 75, of Rose Street, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Bennett was born May 3, 1924, in Binghamton, and was the son of Joseph W. and Kathryn (Stadel) Bennett.

He graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelor's degree and master's degree and completed additional graduate courses at the State University Colleges at Albany, Potsdam and Cortland as well as Colorado Mountain College and the University of Colorado.

Mr. Bennett was employed at the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill as director of athletics and chairman of the physical education department beginning in 1960 and retiring in 1985. He also taught three years at Mohawk Valley Community College and the former Cobleskill Central School.

He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945, and was a member of the 10th Mountain Division, Company K 86th Combat Infantry Body and was the recipient of three Campaign Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and two Battle Stars for the Northern Apennines and Po River Valley Campaigns.

Mr. Bennett was chairman and the driving force for the growth of the Cobleskill Town and Village Youth Recreation Commission, which provided area children with outdoor activities. He was also the recipient of numerous awards including the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Services, National Ski Patrol System Yellow Merit Star for 30 Years of Service, and the Elks Lodge 2040 1991 Citizen of the Year.

In 1968, 1971, and 1985, he took the Cobleskill College Cross Country Ski Team to the National Championships and the team received the honor of being ranked first nationally in 1970.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Sally Bennett (married Sept. 6, 1950), of Cobleskill; daughter, Sandra J. Emanuel of Richmondville; son, James D. Bennett of Summit; grandsons, Kirt W. Wetsell of Cobleskill and Justin R. Deming of Cobleskill; granddaughter, Catlin S. McCarthy of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, Chapel Street, Cobleskill, with the Rev. James L. Bowen officiating. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, March 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Burial will be at a later date in Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Village of Cobleskill Youth Commission Trust Fund, P.O. Box 169, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Thomas J. Natoli

ONEONTA — Thomas J. Natoli, 84, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 19, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born in Norwich on Feb. 6, 1916, the son of the late Thomas F. and Lena Taranto Natoli, and he was married to Gertrude Broe on May 1, 1943.

Mr. Natoli began his career working on the D&H Railroad, then worked in the records room and business office at Homer Folks Hospital. In 1956, he assumed the position of Oneonta city chamberlain, from which he retired in 1973.

He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church and the Knights of Columbus. After his retirement from the city, Mr. Natoli worked as a legal assistant in the office of lawyer Frank Getman for several years.

Mr. Natoli was an avid watercolor and Chinese brush artist who exhibited his paintings throughout the northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. He was a member of the Central New York Watercolor Association, the Southern Vermont Art Association, the  Washington, D.C., Sumi-e Ink Society, and he served three terms as president of the Cooperstown Art Association. His work won numerous awards throughout the region. He taught the art of Chinese Brush Painting at Munson-Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, and led watercolor classes at the Community Center for Adult Learners at the State University College at Oneonta.

In recent years, Mr. Natoli enjoyed teaching painting to several students in his home.

Mr. Natoli is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gertrude Broe Natoli; and their three children, Peggy, and her husband, Thomas Duffy of Williamsburg, Va., and their children, Brigid Duffy and her husband, Douglas Previlige, of South Riding, Va., Jennifer Duffy and Kathryn Duffy of Boston, Mass.; Eileen and her husband, Michael Crowe, of Asheville, N.C., and their children, Karen, Gretchen and Michael of Asheville; and Thomas C. and his wife, Terri, of Alexandria, Va., and their children, Christopher, Ashley, Kelsea, Bethany and Carey, all of Alexandria, Va. In addition, Mr. Natoli is survived by his sister, Kathryn Collier of Mount Vernon, Ohio; his brother, Charles of Dunedin, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home after 3 p.m., Tuesday. Family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Association and the Cancer Society.

Lynne Mae Adams

MESA, Ariz. — Lynne Mae (Lewis) Adams, 60 years old, a resident of Mesa, Ariz., for the past 24 years, died March 18, 2000, at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., of numerous medical complications.

She spent her younger years in Ilion, N.Y., and her teen years in Richfield Springs, N.Y., where she graduated from high school.

She entered the United States Air Force in 1958, and served honorably in  Texas, California and England. She accompanied her husband on assignments to Rome, N.Y., Okinawa, Japan, Rantoul, Ill., and Mesa, Ariz., where they remained upon his retirement from the Air Force.

She was very proud of her service to the Department of Defense Contract Audit Agency where she served in Tempe, Ariz., as an office automation assistant and in Tucson, Ariz., where she served a stint as the administrative supervisor. She was still serving with the agency at the time of her death.

Lyn received a liver transplant in October 1993, due to a childhood illness. In 1994, she required major surgery to reconstruct her liver bile ducts. In 1995, she required triple bypass heart surgery and in 1998, her aoratic heart valve was replaced. Her unbreakable spirit and strong love for people never wavered. Her courage and gentle ways were inspirational to everyone who knew her. She shed one single tear at the final moment of her life.

She leaves behind a broken-hearted family consisting of her husband of 40 years, eight months and 15 days, Hubert (Bert); her son, Mark; her daughter, Sandra Esmeier; her sons, Scott and Todd; granddaughters, Breanna and Rachel Esmeier, Megan Adams and Jordan Adams; grandsons, River Lyle, Billy Ankel and Andrew and Christopher Adams; son-in-law, Scott Esmeier; daughters-in-law, Julie and Janelle Adams. She also leaves behind her older sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Ken Biggers of Loganville, Ga., and her younger brother, Richard (Rickey) Lewis of Mohawk, N.Y.

Words cannot be spoken adequately enough to describe our heartbreak. She lived her life thinking of others and she was filled with courage, grace, charity and love.

Services and reception will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Victory Lutheran Church, 5946 East University Dr., Mesa, Ariz.

Donations may be made to American Liver Foundation, Arizona Chapter, 4545 East Shea Boulevard, Phoenix, Ariz. 85028.

Mary Winegard

RICHMONDVILLE — Mary T.E. Winegard, 74, of Richmondville, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, with her family in attendance.

She was born in Union Beach, N.J., on Oct. 1, 1925, the daughter of Joseph V. Rooney Sr. and Marie I. (Moore) Rooney.

She married William Winegard on Sept. 9, 1949, in Richmondville. She and her husband were interested in flying, and flew airplanes at Duanesburg Airport. Mr. Winegard predeceased her on Nov. 1, 1969.

She was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cobleskill.

She was first employed at Western Electric in Kearny, N.J., and later at the Community Hospital of Schoharie County and Haven Manor Nursing Home in Cobleskill. She was also acting highway superintendent after the death of her husband. She was a consultant for Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics for 25 years, a member of the Shunpike Campers Club, a past president of the County Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Ralph Sperbeck Post #249 American Legion Auxiliary, and member of the Richmondville Ecumenical Bible Study Group and the Marion Study Club.

Mary is survived by her son, William Winegard of Richmondville; one sister, Frances R. Utter of Oneonta; three brothers, George M. Rooney of Worcester, Leo J. Rooney of Perris,  Calif., and Raymond T. Rooney of San Diego,  Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, John Rooney and Joseph V. Rooney Jr., and two sisters, Patricia Allocca and Elsie Hughes.

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 21, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill, with the family in attendance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,  Washington Heights, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Thomas Berardi officiating.

Memorial services will be conducted by the American Legion Auxiliary at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 21.

Funeral arrangements are by the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, Cobleskill.
