Harold T. Silliman

COLLIERSVILLE — Harold T. Silliman, 83, of Colliersville, passed away unexpectedly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, on Saturday, March 18, 2000.

He was born in Cooperstown Junction on Dec. 15, 1916, son of Maude Turk and Glenn Silliman.

Harold graduated from Oneonta High School, worked at Bendix Corp. in Sidney during World War II and spent his professional career of more than 30 years at the Department of Environmental Conservation offices in Stamford and Summit.

Harold was an active member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge, the Colliersville Cemetery Association and danced regularly with several local square dance clubs.

Harold was predeceased by his daughter, Starla; his former wife, Marilyn; his sister, Hazel Wilcox; and his brother, John Silliman.

Harold is survived by his longtime companion Betty New; his four nieces, Edith Reed of Petersburg, Va., Ruth Biddle of Endicott and Linda Tilbe and Kathy Manchester of Maryland; one nephew, Tim Duffy of Covina,  Calif.; three grandnieces; eight grandnephews; and four great-grandnephews, nieces and many friends.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2000, from the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday, March 21, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Contributions can be made in memory of Harold to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or the Colliersville Cemetery Association, care of Linda Tilbe, Sunnycrest Road, Maryland, N.Y. 12116.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Carl I. Willoughby

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Carl I. Willoughby, 79, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Roseboom, the son of James and Elsie (Burger) Willoughby.

On Aug. 24, 1941, he married Elizabeth Williams in Sharon Springs. She survives.

Mr. Willoughby was a charter member of Sharon Springs Grange, a member of the Springfield Grange 1523, lecturer for 20 years.

He worked for Sharon Springs Equipment for many years as a dairy farmer in East Springfield, at Remington Arms, Illion, and operated a fruit stand in East Springfield.

Besides his wife, Elizabeth Willoughby of East Springfield, survivors include, three sons, Carl B. Willoughby of Richfield Springs, Roger Willoughby of Illion and Ron Willoughby of Longmeadow, Mass.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Willoughby of Canajoharie; three sisters, Ethle Hammel of Cobleskill, Evelyn Wilcox of Florida and Cobleskill, and Betty Jane Meade of Chestertown; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Rex Fullam, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Springfield Center, officiating.

Cremation will follow at The Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

Spring burial will be in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will he held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Willoughby's memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders or the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Marie Truran

SANTA MONICA,  Calif. — Marie Truran, 85, died after an extended illness on March 17, 2000, at Santa Monica,  Calif.

Born in Neptune, N.J., on Jan. 7, 1915, Marie resided in Hobart, N.Y., and Margaretville, N.Y., for many years. She was a graduate of The University of Syracuse School of Music.

Marie was the organist for the Hobart and Margaretville Methodist churches while her husband, Kenneth Truran was their minister. She continued her musical interests after leaving this area by serving as organist and musical director in churches in New York City. She also worked professionally as an accompanist and in off-Broadway productions.

A sweet and generous person, Marie volunteered to help with many school and community projects.

She was the mother of five children, predeceased by Arthur and Dorothy and survived by Phyllis Truran of Ocean Grove, N.J., Ruth Cutler of Santa Monica,  Calif., and David Truran of Halcottsville, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made in the memory of Marie to either the Hobart or Margaretville Methodist churches.

Mary Fletcher

BATH, Pa. — Mary Fletcher, 89, of Bath, Pa., died March 19, 2000, at ManorCare Health Services II, Bethlehem, Pa.

She was born Jan. 20, 1911, in Oneonta, N.Y., the daughter of Frank Thompson and Minnie (Daud).

She was married to Willie M. Fletcher. He predeceased her.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church, Oneonta, N.Y.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Carol L. Starkweather of Bath, Pa.; sisters, Nellie and Chester Kucharski of Oneonta, N.Y., and Virginia and Kenneth Rogers of Oneonta, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her husband, Willie M. Fletcher; and her parents, Frank and Minnie Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at Grummans Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, N.Y., on Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 10 a.m. Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, N.Y.

Harriet H. Kinne

NORTH SYRACUSE — Harriet H. Kinne, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Birchwood Health Care Center, Liverpool.

She was born in Cooperstown, Otsego County.

She was a resident of North Syracuse since 1997, before that, she lived in New Hartford since the 1940s.

She was a graduate of the Knox School, located in Cooperstown, in 1928.

She founded and operated Handmades by Harriet of New Hartford for more than 30 years. Her products were sold by Saks of Fifth Avenue, Bergdorg-Goodman,and Bon Wit-Teller of New York City and in exclusive gifts shops along the New England seashore.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Hartford, a 20-year member of Yahnundasis Golf Club of New Hartford and Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Kinne Jr., who died in October 1972.

Harriet is survived by two sons, Robert L. Kinne III of North Syracuse and Dr. Jonathan H. Kinne of Auroro,  Colo.; one sister, Doris Sprague of Utica; three grandchildren, one grandson, Joshua R. Kinne of Fargo, N.D., and two granddaughters, Molly S. Kinne of Athens, Ohio, and Karen A. McGeary of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Services will be at New Hartford Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2000, with the Rev. Janet E. Hoover officiating. A spring burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Evelyn F. Smith

FLEISCHMANNS — Evelyn F. Smith, 75, of Fleischmanns, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her home.

She was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Patchogue, the daughter of Robert Keenan and Evelyn Kelly.

She was married to Robert E. Smith. He died Nov. 19, 1985.

She worked as a sales clerk at McClellans 5 and 10 Cents Store in Amityville.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, and Our Lady of Lords, Massapequa.

She enjoyed leather crafts and crocheting.

Evelyn is survived by one daughter, Colleen, and son-in-law, Raymond Zullin of Fleischmannns; one son, Denis, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith, of Highland. She is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a good friend and neighbor, Ingeborg Zullin of Dunraven.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 25, 2000, at noon, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Burial will be in the Amityville Cemetery, Amityville, on Monday, March 27, at 1 p.m. Calling hours will be Friday, March 24, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Evelyn Smith to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Joseph L. Carli

MARGARETVILLE — Joseph L. Carli, 73, of Bull Run, Margaretville, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Newark, N.J.

He was born July 25, 1926, in Brooklyn, the son of Peter Carli and Emelia Migliorni.

He married Anna Marsico in the Catholic Church, Arkville, on March 25, 1951.

He was in the United States Air Force. He worked for the DEP Police Department for 30 years, retiring in 1984.

He was active in the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville. He was a member of the Margaretville Fire Department. He was a Catskill Mountain News reporter. He was a commander of the American Legion Post #216.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Anna Carli of Margaretville; one sister, Gloria Ploutz of Arkville; three nieces and two nephews; and his mother-in-law, Mary Marsico of Margaretville.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 24, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Leo Prince as the celebrant and the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as the con-celebrant. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville. Calling hours will be Thursday, March 23, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Joe Carli to the charity of your choice.

Beatrice Ellerson

HOBART — Beatrice D. Ellerson, 92, formerly of Hobart, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born April 27, 1907, in Blenheim, the daughter of Frank and Juliaetta (Noxon) Decker.

She was married to David Ellerson on May 23, 1964. He passed away Dec. 19, 1981.

A housewife, she was an active member of the Hobart United Methodist Church teaching Sunday school and belonged to the various prayer and women's organizations.

Two daughters, Mrs. Beverly Verry of Oneonta and Mrs. Edward (Virginia) Salone of Portlandville, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren survive.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 22, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with Pastor Elliot Oakes officiating. Burial will be at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Fox Memorial Nursing Home.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Kathryn E. Cooper

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Kathryn Elizabeth Cooper, 88, of Cooperstown, died Saturday evening, March 18, 2000, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Dr. Francis Fassett.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1911, in Minneapolis, Minn., a daughter of Harley and Grace (Oakes) Howe.

She married John Martin Cooper on Jan. 19, 1940, in Troy, Ohio. Mr. Cooper died on Oct. 31, 1968.

Kathryn spent her childhood and young adult life in Troy, Dayton and Columbus, Ohio. Her mid-20s found her in New York City as a model and in public relations work for foreign dignitaries.

Her husband's career took them from  Washington, D.C., (where he was secretary for an admiral in the United States Navy) to Troy, Ohio,  White Plains, and ultimately New York City, where Mr. Cooper rounded out his career in management for Hobart Manufacturing Co.

While in Ohio, Kathryn founded a nursery school, was president of the Mother's Club, district president of the Girl Scout Council, a member of the United States Ice Skating Association and active with her horses and gymkana. During her years in New York, she was chairman of the Red Cross, chairman and board member of the Woman's Club, chairman of Burke Rehab Center, deaconess of her church and enjoyed traveling.

A woman of style and class, she will be missed be her family and friends.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Dr. Francis Fassett of Cooperstown; a brother and sister-in-law, Dwight and Mary Howe of Hendersonville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Derek, Leila and Corey; a great-granddaughter, Shannon; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Thomasine Morales

ONEONTA — Thomasine M. Morales, 89, of Oneonta, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 19, 2000.

She was born in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Michael Angelo and Pasqualina Davi Ross.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Morales.

She is survived by seven children, Pricilla (Russell) Dunham of Vestal, Aline (James) Rundall of Ramsey, N.J., Joseph Morales of Ramsey, N.J., Michael Morales of Goodyear Lake, Mary (Gary) Kirpes of Tucson, Ariz., Katherine (Edward) VanDeusen of Oneonta and Frank (Evelyn) Morales of Worcester; a sister, Mary Ross of Oneonta; two brothers, Thomas Ross of Oneonta and Joseph Ross of Oneonta; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Morales was a lifetime resident of the area. She was at one time the legal secretary for the district attorney in Oneonta after graduation from the Albany Business College.

She was active in the church choir many years ago, and recently at the age of 80 was in the theatrical production of Silver Whistle.

Fond of poetry, she had some of her work published.

She attended Woodstock in 1969, and worked on George McGovern's campaign for president.

She was at one time a home health-care aide, and spiritual counselor.

She will be remembered by her family as a devoted mother and grandmother.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at 9 a.m. at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Oneonta Nursing Home, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Thomasine's memory.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.
