Joel Nichols
OTEGO — Joel Nichols, 65, died Monday morning, March 27, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 4, 1934, in Watchung, N.J., the son of Lloyd and Grace (Doyle) Nichols.
Joel married the former Patricia Crandell in Oneonta on March 17, 1962, who survives him.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Joel had worked for Reinhardt Home Heating, West Oneonta, for more than 20 years as a furnace technician and installer.
A resident of Otego since 1965, he previously lived in Oneonta.
He enjoyed working on and collecting antique automobiles. He was a fun loving type of person who enjoyed having fun with friends and was a very caring person.
He was a member of the Oneonta Moose Club and former member of the Otego Fire Department.
Survived by his wife of 38 years, Patricia P. Nichols of Otego; five daughters and their spouses, Cheryl A. Marshall and her husband, Gordon, of Oneonta, Theresa L. Bradley and John of Milford, Michele R. Stafford and her husband, H. Michael, of Laurens, Donna D. Jones and her husband, David, of Schenevus and Mary Ann Simonds and her husband, Scott, of Oneonta; three sons and their spouses, Merv "JR" Quick and his wife, Kathleen, of Unadilla, Joel "Butch" Nichols and his wife, Doreen, of Cortland, and Michael Nichols and his wife, Renee, of Cortland; his mother, Grace Nichols of Mountville, S.C.; and one sister, Margaret Preston and her husband, Harold, of Clinton, S.C. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Marge Crawford of Milford.
Predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Bruce Nichols.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmitt officiating.
Burial will be later in the spring in Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., March 31, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, when the family will be present at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in memory of Joel Nichols.

Kathleen Miller
WALTON — Kathleen `Katie' K. Miller, 72, of Walton, lost her life to cancer at her home Tuesday, March 28, 2000.
She retired from the National Bank of Delaware County, Walton, and had been employed by Cornelius Blythe Accounting and Crawford Brothers Feed Mill of Walton.
Katie was an avid volunteer with Delaware County 4-H, Delaware Valley Hospital, Delaware County Fair, Delaware County Red Cross and treasurer of Haulenbeek St. John Cable Alumni Scholarship Fund Inc.
She was a member of the Walton United Presbyterian Church and a member and past matron of Willowemoc/Downsville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was born in Freer Hollow, Walton, on Nov. 1, 1927, to Millard N. and Florence (Elderkin) Kilpatrick.
She married Paul E. Miller on Aug. 11, 1946, in the United Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; and three daughters and sons-in-law, Lindy and Jim Taggart of Walton, Betsy and Rick Weidenbach of Walton and Becky and Mike Porter of Margaretville. She also is survived by six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Mary Ellen Budine of Walton.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Buck and Joe Kilpatrick.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, corner of North and East streets, Walton, with the Rev. Dr. James Martin, pastor of her church, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

George Townsend
BAINBRIDGE — George Townsend, 66, of Bainbridge died unexpectedly on Monday, March 27, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.
He was born on Sept. 15, 1933, in Butternuts, to the late Howard and Pearl (Webster) Townsend.
George served his country in the United States Air Force.
He married Eleanor Lang on Aug. 8, 1980, in Afton.
George was a truck driver for the state Department of Transportation, retiring after 22 years, then he was employed by At-A-Glance, Sidney, as a maintenance assistant when he retired in 1999.
George is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Bainbridge; five sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Patricia Townsend of New Berlin, George and Lisa Townsend Jr. of Mount Upton, Dale Townsend and Cindy Buyea of Norwich, Daryl Townsend and Christina Seymour of Guilford and Edward Saunders of Bainbridge; three daughters and son-in-law, Susan Carpenter of Virginia Beach, Va., Linda Saunders of Binghamton and Suzanne and Terry Brownell of Edmeston; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Sandy Townsend of Mount Upton; three sisters, Helen Gage of South New Berlin, Anna Camp of Mount Upton and Wanda Brown of Sidney; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. George is also survived by his dog, Snoopy.
He was predeceased by daughter, Francine Townsend and grandson, Jay Carpenter.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 30, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Bainbridge, officiating.
Friends may call Thursday; the family will be in attendance from 11 a.m. before the service.
Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Ruth E. Yerdon
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ruth E. Yerdon, 86, of Hogs Back Road, passed away on Monday evening, March 27, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1913, in the town of Richfield, daughter of the late Henry E. and Lena E. Nichols Swartz.
A lifelong area resident, she was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School Class of 1932.
On July 20, 1932, she married Delmer Yerdon in Richfield Springs, a blessed union of 54 years until his passing on Nov. 1, 1986.
She was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, a 50-year member of Arbutus Chapter #317 Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the Cherry Valley Rebekah Lodge #546 and a member of the Warren Grange #810.
Surviving her are two sons and their wives, Henry and Marie Yerdon of Richfield Springs and Richard and Barbara Yerdon of Marcy; two daughters, Beverly Kaiser of Sylvania, Ohio, and Judi Ginder of Richfield Springs; six grandchildren, Mark, Cynthia, Valerie, Mary, James and Scott; eight great-grandchildren, Michael, Kevin, Karen, Angela, Lily, Keely, Dean and Savanna; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs on Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor, officiating. Interment in Springfield Center Cemetery will take place at a later time convenient to the family.
The family will receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Members of Arbutus Chapter #317 O.E.S. are asked to meet at the funeral home at 8 p.m. on Thursday for a Ritualistic Service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Barbara B. Lewis
DELHI — Barbara B. Lewis, 73, of Delhi, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
She was born April 16, 1926, in Walton, the daughter of Dr. E.O. and Mrs. Ella (Vitt) Bush.
She married Robert H. Lewis Jr. in DeLancey on Nov. 24, 1951. He survives, as do two sons, R. Scott and Ivy Lewis of Delhi and James and Kathryn Lewis of Worcester; two daughters, Salenda and Steven Murphy of Hartford and Cynthia and Jody Pinney of Treadwell; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Sally Bush of Anderson, Calif.; an aunt, Salenda C. Bush of Meredith Square; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lewis was a graduate of Delaware Academy in the Class of 1943, and Catherine Gibbs in New York City.
She worked for Sen. Irving M. Ives in Washington, D.C., for five years as his personal secretary and in the Delaware County Library as a court librarian.
She volunteered for the American Red Cross and was involved in the Ambloypia Clinic and testing of youth in the community. At the Second Presbyterian Church, now United Ministries of Delhi, she was a Sunday school teacher and active member.
A mother who took great pride in her home and family, Barbara was an avid bridge player who also enjoyed skiing and golf.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, March 31, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Ministries Church of Delhi, with the Rev. Mark Chatterton officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be at a later date in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bassett Healthcare Dialysis Unit, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
Jewel O. Hearn
SOUTH PASADENA, Fla. — Jewel Odessa Hearn, 93, of South Pasadena, Fla., and formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Springs at Boca Ciega Bay, Fla.
She was born in Chipley, Fla., she moved to South Pasadena in 1974, from St. Petersburg.
She was a homemaker and was Baptist.
Jewel is survived by several cousins, including her caregiver, Carolyn Hiepe of St. Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was by National Cremation Society, St. Petersburg.
Thomas Scorzafava
ONEONTA — Thomas "Tommy" Alfred Scorzafava, 53, of Oneonta, died Wednesday morning, March 29, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born May 7, 1946, in Oneonta, the son of Alfred Paul and Esther Jane (Ward) Scorzafava.
A lifelong area resident, Tommy was an avid car buff. He enjoyed working on small engines and detailing cars. He was an avid fisherman in his youth and was always happy and smiling.
Tommy is survived by two brothers and their spouses, Ronald H. Scorzafava and his wife, Mary, of Lady Lake, Fla., and Paul J. Scorzafava and his wife, Suzanne, of West Oneonta. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, April 1, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Friday, March 31, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Harriett M. Fay
ONEONTA — Mrs. Harriett M. Fay, 68, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
She was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Oneonta, the daughter of John G. and Emma R. (Klingler) Puylara.
On March 7, 1964, she married Guy E. Fay in Oneonta, he survives.
Harriett worked as a legal secretary for various lawyers and after retirement worked part time as an aide for Valley View School.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #1461 in Oneonta. This organization was her "pride and joy"' and she served in many capacities.
Harriett was also an avid bingo player.
Besides her husband of 36 years, Guy E. Fay of Oneonta; she is survived by a son, Stephen Bedford of Latham; eight stepchildren, Delores Rowe, Mona and Darrell Shed, Linda and Terry Jones, Glori Metcalf, James Fay and Mack and Debbie Fay, all of Florida, Marla Steffey of Indiana and Russell and Dorothea Fay of Portlandville; three brothers, Carl and Sophia Puylara of Oneonta, Leonard Puylara of Nevada and Eugene and Euretta Puylara of Johnson City; a sister-in-law, Louise Puylara of Oneonta; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Alfred Puylara and John and Erma Puylara.
Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.
A memorial service and burial in the Greater Plain Cemetery will be held at a later date, to be announced.

Fleurs M. Oliver
MORRIS — Fleurs M. (Susie) Oliver, 57, of Morris, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at her residence in Morris.
She was born in Summit on Dec. 6, 1942, the daughter of Leslie W. Swift Sr. and Bessie (Cain) Swift.
She was employed by the H. W. Naylor Co. of Morris for several years.
Susie is survived by her longtime companion, Dale Parker of Morris; her children, Walter Oliver and his wife, Kimberly, of New Berlin, Gary Oliver and his wife, Jill, of Garrattsville, and Michele Oakes and her husband, Dean, of Chesterfield, Va.; her twin sister, Frances Norton, and her husband, Bruce, of Morris; her sister, Helen Swift of Morris; and three brothers, Harry Swift and his wife, Rose, of Esperance, Leslie W. Swift Jr. and his wife, Robbie, of California and Gary Swift and his wife, Sandy, of Oneonta. Her grandchildren include Derrick Anderson, Matthew Meyers, Gretchen Meyers, Kaylyn Oliver, Dillion Oakes, Sarah Oakes and Austin Oakes. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, DeForest (Barney) Swift.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 1, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. John Dawson, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating. Committal services and burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice in her memory.
Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
