Thelma L. Cook

ONEONTA — Thelma L. Cook, 91, of Oneonta, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born on Sept. 25, 1908, in Laurens, the daughter of the late Warren and Gertrude Waters Grant. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, George Edward "Ed" Cook, in May of 1989.

She is survived by a stepson, Donald (Ann) Sprague of Bordentown, N.J. ; a special friend, Ruth Eldred, of Portlandville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Cook was born and raised in the town of Laurens. She, with her family, had owned and operated farms on Gifford Hill in Oneonta and in West Laurens.

Services for Mrs. Cook will be on Sunday, April 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer officiating.

Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call Saturday between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Laurens Emergency Squad, Main Street, Laurens, in Mrs. Cook's memory.

Nancy Stafford Ives

EAST WORCESTER — Nancy A. Stafford Ives, 40, of East Worcester, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born April 27, 1959, in Onley, Md., the daughter of Francis "Butch" and Joyce (Anderson) Stafford.

Nancy his lived in Worcester for the past 25 years and was previously from Sharon Springs.

She was a licensed practical nurse at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Cobleskill.

She is survived by her children, Jennifer, Amy, Brian and Emily Ives of East Worcester; her husband, Tracy Ives, of East Worcester; her parents, Francis "Butch" and Joyce Stafford, of East Worcester and Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Michelle and her husband, Lewis Fancher, of Clarksville, Va., and Lisa and her husband, Carl Jackson, of Summit; two brothers, Frank and his wife, Pat Stafford, of West Chazy and Jim Stafford and Natasha Fisher of Cobleskill; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Stafford, in 1980; and her grandparents, Francis and Edith Stafford of Sharon Springs and James and May Anderson of Poolesville, Md.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 1, 2000, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester and East Worcester United Methodist churches, officiating.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 1, 2000, from 2 p.m. until service time.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Nancy to the East Worcester Fire Department, P.O. Box 781, East Worcester, N.Y. 12064.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Orvetta Mae McLaughlin

WALTON — Mrs. Orvetta Mae (Tillie) McLaughlin, 88, of RD 3 Box 75 Route 206 (Loomis) died Sunday morning, April 2, 2000, at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born on May 27, 1911, at Franklin Depot in the town of Sidney to Ernest and Bessie (Higley) Wilber.

She married Raymond McLaughlin on Jan. 4, 1931, in Walton. He predeceased her on Oct. 15, 1991. She was also predeceased by a son, Roger McLaughlin in 1969.

She was a homemaker on the family farm in Loomis.

She was a 4-H instructor, and a director of Delaware County Fair for 10 years for Fair Buildings.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sharon McLaughlin of Hampden, Mass.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Wanda (Bonnie) Budine of Walton; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 4, 2000, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., prior to the service.

Florence Oppel Dorr

LITTLE FALLS — A celebration of the long life of Florence Oppel Dorr will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 16  Jackson St., Little Falls, on Sunday, April 9, 2000, at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Jon Noble will lead the service.

Friends and neighbors are invited to join the family to share celebratory "Florence" stories and enjoy a luncheon together afterwards.

Burial later in the spring will be at the discretion of the family.

Necole Aldrich

DAVENPORT — Necole Rachel Belle Aldrich, 4 months and 20 days, of Davenport, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at her home in Davenport.

She was born Nov. 11, 1999, in Oneonta, the daughter of Gordon "Butch" Aldrich Jr. and Sharolynn Felter, both of Davenport.

Necole has touched so many lives, and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her parents, Gordon "Butch" Aldrich Jr. and Sharolynn Felter of Davenport; four brothers, Perry and Russell Felter of Davenport, Larry VanKueren of Walton and Gordon Aldrich III of Davenport; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Diane Alcott of Davenport; maternal grandparents, Virgil and Dorothy Oakley of Hobart and Ellis and Kathleen Guile of North Blenheim; paternal great-grandmother, Carrie Aldrich of the Delaware Countryside Care Center of Delhi; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Necole was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Gordon Aldrich Sr., and her twin sister, Sabrina Diane Lynn Aldrich on March 2, 2000.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Calling hours will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, at the funeral home.

She will be interred with her sister in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

The family has requested expressions of sympathy be made to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Necole's memory.

Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Rita E. Boman

WEST ONEONTA — Rita Elizabeth Boman, 73, of West Oneonta, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at her residence.

She was born April 19, 1926, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Joseph and Sabina Bogdanski Thomas.

Mrs. Boman was married to John R. Boman. He died Oct. 4, 1986.

Mrs. Boman was an associate of the J.C. Penney Co., Oneonta, for 15 years retiring in 1996. She had been a resident of the greater Oneonta area since 1975. Prior to living in this area, she was a resident of Baldwin, Long Island.

Before her marriage she had worked on Wall Street in New York City for Merrill Lynch Co. as a secretary.

While in Long Island she enjoyed playing bingo and roller skating dancing to the old tunes. Mrs. Boman had a green thumb and was an avid gardener.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

Mrs. Boman is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Nancy Boman of West Oneonta; three daughters and a son-in-law, Joanne Boman of West Oneonta, Suzanne Boman of Otego and Diane Colwell and her husband, Richard, of Chaska, Minn.; one sister, Alice Schaefer of Holbrook, Long Island; one brother-in-law, Charles Smith of Florida; seven grandchildren, Christopher and Kimberly Boman of Michigan, Kim Boman of Otego, Joseph Boman of West Oneonta, Amy and Mary Colwell of Minnesota and Shelley and Timothy Stilson of Otego. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Eileen Smith.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 7, 2000, at the Bible Baptist Church, Mount Vision, with the Rev. Christopher Ellis, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church, Mount Vision, officiating.

Burial will be later in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Thursday, April 6, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Rita Boman.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Martin VanBuren

DELHI — Mr. Martin J. VanBuren, 83, of Delhi, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at the O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

He was born Jan. 15, 1917, in Summit, the son of Ford and Edith (Nimitz) VanBuren.

He married Ethel Barry on Dec. 31, 1939, in Treadwell.

Martin served in the United States Army during World War II.

Martin was a machinist at Bendix-Scintilla in Sidney for many years before his retirement.

He was a member of the Flat Creek Baptist Church in Gilboa and was a member of the Hose Co. in Prattsville.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed, especially for the way he was able to bring smiles to those who knew him.

Martin is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ethel VanBuren of Delhi; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Ed Chatfield of Prattsville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Martin F. and Maisha VanBuren of Afton, David and Arlene VanBuren of Connecticut, Barry and Diane VanBuren of Cleveland, and Dale and Barbara VanBuren of Hebron, Conn.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith Jester of Oneonta, Stella Trask of Schenevus and Dorothy VanDusen of Schenevus; and several nieces and nephews.

Martin was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew VanBuren; two sisters, Millie Peck and Harriett Mitchell; and three brothers, Ford VanBuren, Byron VanBuren and Charles VanBuren.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery at a later date.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday evening, April 4, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m., when those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Flat Creek Baptist Church, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076 in loving memory of Martin J. VanBuren.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Walter 'Bob' Dart

PORTLANDVILLE — Walter "Bob" Dart, 82, of Portlandville and Zephyrhills, Fla., died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 19, 2000, at his winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla., one day prior to his 83rd birthday.

He was born on March 20, 1917, in Oneonta, the son of the late Austin and Tillie Osterhout Daniels Dart.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Vivian Decker Dart, on Aug. 1, 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Fanny Cooper Dart of Portlandville and Zephyrhills, Fla.; sons, Ronald Dart and his wife, Jaqueline, of Wayland, Mass., and Richard Dart of Austin,  Texas; daughter, Barbara Crawford and her husband, Jim, of Otego; stepdaughter, Verna Strong, and her husband, Ken, of Georgia; three grandchildren, Erica Dart, David Dart and Jamie Crawford; sister, June Cornell, and her husband, Larry; brothers, Leon Dart and his wife, Clara, and Ted Dart and his wife, Kathleen.

Mr. Dart graduated from Milford Central School. In the early years, he worked for the McClory Brothers in Milford, the Shines Theater and the Palace Theater in Oneonta. He then worked as a custodian for the Milford Central School for 20 years until his retirement.

Bob was known for playing with the Ernie Russ Orchestra for 50 years, and then with the Old Favorites for several years after.

A memorial service will be held on May 19, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Milford Center Baptist Church, Route 28, Milford Center, with Pastor Steve Fournier officiating. Interment will be in the Milford Center Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Portlandville Methodist Church in Bob's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Chloe A. Marrone

HALCOTTSVILLE — Chloe Amanda was born Sept. 13, 1913, to Isaac LaVerne Clark and Carrie Emily Dutcher in the parlor bedroom of Sunnyside, the 328 acre dairy farm in the town of Roxbury, Delaware County. She was delivered by Dr. Julian A. Gaul of Halcottsville, who was assisted by midwife grandmother Chloe Amanda Dutcher, for whom Chloe was named. After a long illness at the home she shared with her two sons, Vincent and Peter, Chloe died peacefully on April 1, 2000.

Chloe was a devout member of the Brookdale Baptist Church. Her church and family were her first concerns.

She attended the one-room Roxbury Schoolhouse #12 and Margaretville High School.

Chloe was a self-taught pen and ink artist, drawing local scenery, waterfalls, hayfields or members of the family. She was also an exquisite seamstress. Chloe even made her own coats and hats.

Chloe Amanda Marrone is survived by her two sons, Vincent Marrone and Peter Marrone of Nutley, N.J.; one granddaughter, Lisa Marie Marrone of Holiday, Fla.; three brothers, Victor Webb Clark of Vestal, Isaac Laverne Clark of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Hugh Curry Clark of Henderson, N.C.; and two sisters, Allegra Ellen Tomlinson and Beatrice Clark Bussy, both of Halcottsville.

Services will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2000, at 11 a.m. at The Old School Baptist Meeting House on Main Street in Halcottsville, the same church where Chloe listened to her grandfather Elder John D. Clark preach many times. Elder Steven Bloyd of Street, Md., will officiate the funeral service.

Burial will follow at Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

George C. Robertson Jr.

OTEGO — George C. Robertson Jr. of Otsdawa Road in Otego died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Mr. Robertson was born April 18, 1925, in Englewood, N.J. He was the son of George C. Robertson Sr. and Phyllis (Marshall) Robertson.

He married Jeannette Knauer on April 6, 1946, in Dumont, N.J.

Mr. Robertson served in the United States Navy in World War II as a radioman in the European Theater.

Mr. Robertson is survived by his wife, Jeannette, of Otego; a sister, Martha Sechler, of Tuckerton, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dana L. and Glenn Ray of Callahan, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, George C. and Kathleen Robertson of Camano Island, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Paula A. and John Hawver of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Christine and Kevin Bryant of Callahan, Ala., Karen and Edwin Knickerbocker of Oneonta, Beth and Matthew Calloway of Pelham, Ala., and Marshall and Stephanie Hayes of Fort Campbell, Ky.; nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Charles.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Otego Baptist Church on Main Street in Otego.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad and the American Cancer Society.

David W. Edwards

COOPERSTOWN — David William Edwards, major, USAF, retired, 79, of Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, died Tuesday afternoon, April 4, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1921, in Fort Collins,  Colo., a son of Dr. Slocom Rupert Edwards and Mabel (Wing) Edwards.

He married Rose McSparren on April 21, 1943, at the Deming Air Force Base Chapel in Deming, N.M.

Maj. Edwards was raised in South Bend, Ind., and later moved to New York City. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on July 3, 1942, beginning his career as a navigator-bombardier. He logged more than 2,000 hours in B-52s, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Rising through the ranks of the Air Force, he was commissioned a second lieutenant on April 17, 1943, and a major on May 15, 1963. During his time in the service, Maj. Edwards furthered his education and in 1958 received a bachelor of arts degree in social science from Sacramento State College in California. His last station was at the 329th Bombardment Squadron, Strategic Air Command, Castle Air Force Base,  Calif. He was medically retired with multiple sclerosis on Dec. 6, 1965.

Following his retirement, Maj. Edwards rejoined his family in Ilion, where he had been stationed at Griffiss Air Force Base from 1959 until 1963. In 1970, Maj. Edwards and his family moved to their present home on Chestnut Street in Cooperstown. While living here he attended the Cooperstown Graduate Program.

He was a life member of the Retired Officers Association.

Maj. Edwards is survived by his wife, the former Rose McSparren of Cooperstown; one son, Keith D. Edwards of Cooperstown; his stepmother, Mrs. S.R. Edwards of San Diego,  Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Hubert (Barbara) Lyng or Lakeland, Fla.; one half sister, Mrs. Howard (Janice) Fisher of San Diego,  Calif.; one niece, Mrs. Janet Palmer or Long Island; and a great-niece, Victoria O'Reilly of  Washington, D.C.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Fay Morley Edwards, on Feb. 13, 1988.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu or flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
