Frank R. Cobb

MORRIS — Frank R. Cobb, 78, of Morris died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at his home in Morris.

He was born in the town of Pittsfield on March 19, 1922, the son of Charles and Effie (Oliver) Cobb.

He was married to Bessie Leona Sargent on Aug. 31, 1940, at their home in Morris.

The town of Morris employed him for more than 31 years and the last 20 years he served as highway superintendent until his retirement. He then was employed by Webster Paving Co. of Oneonta for 10 years.

Frank was a member of the Otsego County Highway Superintendents Association and the Retired Public Employees Association Inc. and a former member of the Butternuts Valley Rod and Gun Club.

He was a lifelong area resident and an avid stock car and NASCAR fan.

Frank is survived by his wife, Bessie, of Morris; one son, Brent Cobb, and his wife, Joan, of Morris; his grandchildren, John Cobb and his wife, Ellen, of Morris, Frank Cobb and his wife, Tracy, of Oneonta; and his great-grandchildren, Tara, Latisha and Gavin Cobb. He is also survived by three sisters, Beatrice Card, Lena Cobb and Emma Webb, all of New Berlin; and one brother, Charles Russell Cobb, also of New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Alice Cobb, predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 7, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating. Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory in Morris and interment of the cremains will be private in the Hillington Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours and it was Frank's request that in lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Morris Fire Department, the Morris Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice in his memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Frank Martin

BLOOMVILLE — Frank "Pepper" Martin, 69, of Bloomville died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Carlisle Hospital, Carlisle, Pa.

He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Delhi, the son of Wendell L. and Elisabeth (Sackett) Martin.

In 1958, in Greene, he married Florence Barrows, who passed away in 1967. In 1970, he married Kathleen Adair in Bloomville.

His wife, Kathleen, survives him as do a son, Ricky Gene (Susan) Martin of Austin,  Texas; three daughters, Jamie and Gary Bolton of Peachtree City, Ga., JoAnne Young and her fianc้, Geoffrey Beard of Cortland, and Dr. Julie Martin and her fianc้, Brad Clason of Eagle,  Colo.; and five grandchildren. Three brothers, Wendell (Erma) Martin of South Kortright, Donald (Juanita) Martin of Bloomville and Stanley (Sherry) Martin of Duanesburg; two sisters, Betty Munro of Roxbury and Jeanne (Don) Pittenger of Olympia, Wash.; as well as several nieces and nephews also survive.

Three brothers, Jerry, David and Jim Martin predeceased him.

Pepper was a graduate of South Kortright Central School and the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Korea, and came home to own and operate his own dairy farm and construction company in Bloomville.

He was a member of the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post #190 in Delhi.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, April 10, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Calling hours will be Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home in Delhi. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post #190 in Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Lura J. Parsons

DELHI — Lura J. Parsons, 74, of Melbourne, Fla., and formerly of Delhi died Saturday, April 1, 2000, in Melbourne Fla.

She was born April 19, 1925, in the town of Franklin, the daughter of Daniel and Thirza (Trask) Epps.

She resided most of her life in Delaware County and for 48 years lived in Delhi. The last 16 months she lived in Florida.

Her husband, Myron (Mike) J. Parsons, survives her. They were married in Meridale on June 13, 1942.

Two children, Mrs. Leonard (Bonnie) Hankins of Palm Bay, Fla. and Daniel P. Parsons of Binghamton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. John Mondore of Franklin and Audrey Thorsland of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., also survive.

She was devoted to her family as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Parsons worked from 1964-1974 as a cook at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She belonged to the Women of the Moose organization of Oneonta.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, April 7, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. John Greiner, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Oneonta, officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 6, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Brevard Alzheimer's Foundation, 4676 No. Wickham Road, Melbourne, FL, 32935.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Penny Schwartz

STAMFORD — Penny Schwartz, 57, of Stamford died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at her home.

She was born Aug. 9, 1942, in Stamford, the daughter of David and Margery (Martino) Wright.

Her husband, Larry Schwartz of Stamford; two daughters, Madeline (David) Hitt of  Jefferson and Laura (Trevor) Thonnesen of  Jefferson; a son, Brian Schwartz of Stamford; and two grandchildren, Kaylin and Amy, survive her. So do her mother, Margery Wright, who resides in Stamford; three brothers, John (Sharon) Wright of  Jefferson, David (Jane) Wright of Philmont and Ivan Wright of Stamford; and a sister, Midge (Donald) Fullington of Stamford.

Penny was the owner operator of The Village Restaurant in Stamford, which she ran for eight years. She "lived her life to the fullest and treasured her family and friends."

The services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Stamford Baptist Church Transportation Van Fund, Lake Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

J. Longendyke Jr.

ANDES — James H. "Jim" Longendyke Jr., 52, of Andes died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born July 27, 1947, in Kingston, the son of James H. and Dorothy M. (Cericola) Longendyke, and grew up in Saugerties.

He had been employed at Rotron Inc. in Shokan before his health declined.

An Andes resident since 1990, Jim had a love of small animals all his life.

Surviving are his mother, Dorothy M. Longendyke, and sister, Denise M. Longendyke, both of Andes; aunts, uncles, cousins and several close friends.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Delhi Branch, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon), where Jim was a member, Luce Center, Delhi. Elder Herbert C. Baldauf, branch president, will preside.

Cremation will be made through Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to "The Defibrillator Program," care of Delaware County sheriff, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

John D. O'Connell

GALLOWAY, Ohio — John D. (Jack) O'Connell, 60, of Galloway, Ohio, died March 16, 2000, at his home.

He was a former resident of Oneonta, N.Y., and Franklin Lakes, N.J.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hebbard Adair; daughters, Danielle Hays of Ohio, Stefanie O'Connell of Suffern, N.Y., and Susan Adair of New Jersey; sons, Michael O'Connell of California, James O'Connell, John O'Connell, David Adair and Marc Adair of New Jersey; four grandchildren, Allyson Hays and Jason, Matthew and Jordan O'Connell.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2000, at 10 a.m. at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, Franklin Lakes, N.J. Interment will be at Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes, N.J.

Olga Stefanow

WAGEMANN, La. — Olga Stefanow passed away on March 27, 2000, in Wagemann, La.

She lived for more than 30 years on Elk Creek Road in Schenevus, N.Y.

She was born Olga Petruska on Nov. 28, 1909, in New Jersey and she married Julian Stefanow, who predeceased her in 1973.

She had two sons, Robert Stefanow of Schenevus, N.Y., and Arthur Stefanow of Wagemann, La., who passed away in 1998.

Olga is survived by several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren in New Jersey and  Louisiana. A granddaughter, Dawn Galster, lives in East Meredith, N.Y.

She was an avid reader and a homemaker and often opened her home to many guests who visited for the weekends over the years.

She had a good friend, Anna Diehl of Schenevus, N.Y., who was of great help to her, and whom the family thanks for her assistance.

Private funeral arrangements were made in  Louisiana.

Jane J. Koury

ONEONTA — Jane Jemmely Koury, 77, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday morning, April 5, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a lengthy illness.

She was born on Sept. 13, 1922, in Oneonta, the daughter of Sadie and Mary (Joseph) Koury, who are both deceased.

Jane worked at the family business, Koury's Newsstand on Broad Street in Oneonta, during the 1960s and 1970s.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph, and his wife, Shirley Koury of Mentor, Ohio; a sister, Esther Koury of Oneonta; a brother, Edward Koury of Loudonville; and a sister, Mrs. Ralph (Elizabeth) Enokian of Albany; seven nieces and three nephews, and several grandnieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Canon Mark Cole, pastor of St. James' Episcopal Church, officiating. Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, when the family will be in attendance. The burial will be in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends are invited to a luncheon that will be served at the 6th Ward Athletic Club, following the funeral ceremonies.

Shirley Karen Born

WORCESTER — Shirley Karen Born, 64, of Worcester, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at home, due to injuries sustained in a house fire.

She was born Sept. 13, 1935, in Newton, N.J., the daughter of Earl and Virginia (Rose) Becker.

She married Adolph (Fred) Born on Nov. 26, 1955, at the Dutch Reform Church in Wayne, N.J.

Shirley lived in Worcester for 24 years; she was previously from New Jersey. She and her husband owned the Bright Shop in Worcester for many years. Shirley was a member of the Word of Faith Church in Cooperstown Junction. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 44 years, Fred Born, of Worcester; her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Billy Bond of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Jarrett and Rebekkah Bond of Norfolk; her sister, Anita Harrington, of Bloomingdale, N.J.; her brother, Earl Becker, of Wayne, N.J.; and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Word of Faith Church in Cooperstown Junction, with the Rev. Frank W. MacCracken Sr. and the Rev. Frank W. MacCracken Jr. officiating.

A memorial service will also be held at the Norfolk United Methodist Church at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Shirley to the Worcester Fire Department, 10 Church St., Worcester, N.Y. 12197 or the Shirley K. Born Memorial Fund, care of the United Methodist Church, Norfolk, N.Y. 13667.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Arthur J. Riggs

SIDNEY — Arthur J. Riggs, 79, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born to the late James W. and Lena (Brown) Riggs on March 15, 1921, in Franklin.

Arthur served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1942.

He owned and operated COD Carpentry in Sidney for many years.

Arthur was a past commander and member of Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 183 Sidney and a member of the VFW Corporal RH Arrandale Post No. 7914.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Velma (Jacobson) Riggs, of Sidney; his sister, Lucille Jones, of Sidney; his good friend, Glenn S. "Greek" Figary, of Unadilla; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is also predeceased by a brother, Fredrick C. Riggs.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 9, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Roanne MacEwan of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, officiating.

Friends may call Saturday, April 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, on Monday, April 10, at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Evelyn V. Spooner

SCHENEVUS — Evelyn V. Spooner, 74, of Schenevus died Friday, April 7, 2000, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

She was born May 7, 1925, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Charles and Mae (Crewell) Cooper.

She married William H. Spooner on Nov. 24, 1944, in East Moriches. He predeceased her on Dec. 18, 1990.

Mrs. Spooner has lived in Schenevus since 1961.

She was a sewing machine operator at RJ Dress in Oneonta.

Mrs. Spooner is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Patricia Spooner of Geneva and Omar and Denise Spooner of Schenevus; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Milton Cooper of Cobleskill, Louis Cooper of Cobleskill, Fred Cooper of Troy, and Karlton Cooper of Worcester; five sisters, Lillian VanVorhis of Cobleskill, Alice Almasy of Albany, Virginia Vakoutis of Baltimore, Bonnie French of Worcester and Gloria Jean Cooper of Worcester; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Cooper of  Pennsylvania and Dixie Cooper of Lutheranville; many nieces and nephews and several cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Willard and Charles.

Per Mrs. Spooner's request, she was cremated and there will be no calling hours or service.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Spooner to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
