Arnold L. Van Aken

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Arnold L. Van Aken Sr., 85, of West James Street, passed away on Friday evening, April 7, 2000, at Woodhaven Drive, Guilderland, where he and his wife have recently taken residence.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1914, in Mount Vernon, son of the late Vernon and Elizabeth Hocking Van Aken.

Arnold was raised in Yonkers and graduated from Saunders Technical and Trade School.

On June 9, 1935, he married Agnes Dillmann in the Park Hill First Reformed Church, Yonkers.

For 40 years, he worked for the Bendix Aviation Corp., Teterboro, N.J., retiring from the Navigation and Control Division in 1978.

It was in 1980 that he and his wife moved to Richfield Springs coming from Yonkers. While living in Yonkers he was a member of the Park Hill First Reformed Church and in 1980, joined the Trinity Reformed Church, Richfield Springs. He was also a member of the Bendix Corp. Labor Union and the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens.

Surviving him besides his wife of 64 years, Agnes, are one son, Arnold L. Jr. and his wife, Mary Allan Van Aken of Hockessin, Del.; a daughter, Alice and her husband, the Rev. David Poyta of Guilderland; a brother, Warren and his wife, Marion Van Aken of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Viola Mudge of Accokeek, Md.; nine grandchildren, Thomas, Cynthia, Susan, Sandra, Adam and Sarah Van Aken, Kareem, Nicole and Jonathan Poyta; two great-grandsons, Michael and Matthew Van Aken; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Van Aken, in 1967, and two brothers, Vernon and Clarence Van Aken.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. today in Trinity Reformed Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Michael McDonald, pastor, officiating. Interment will take place on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs today from 3 to 5 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Reformed Church, Richfield Springs or the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jeanette M. Allen

SIDNEY — Jeanette M. Allen, 76, of Sidney passed away Saturday, April 8, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born April 3, 1924, in Cadosia, to the late Samuel and Ida (Kelly) Williams.

Jeanette married Everett Allen on June 13, 1942, in Hancock. He predeceased her on Oct. 1, 1995.

She is survived by her son, Leon Allen of Hancock; and daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Carl Cooper of Nedrow.

She is also predeceased by a son, Gerald, and a sister, Marion.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 1 p.m. Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center at a later time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

John W. Vance Sr.

STAMFORD — Mr. John William Vance Sr., 73, of Robinson Terrace, Stamford died Thursday morning, April 6, 2000, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home, Stamford.

He was born March 21, 1927, in Plattekill.

He married Marietta MacNear in 1967, in Newburgh. Mrs. Vance died June 1990.

John served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a retired draftsman working for Spence Engineering in Waldon.

He was a member of the American Legion in Orange County and also a member of the Train Club in Orange County.

John enjoyed his model trains, fishing and woodworking.

John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Katherine Vance Jr. of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Crystal Vance of Oneonta, John Paul Gaydos of Oneonta, Kelly Gaydos of Florida, Heather Vance of Oneonta and Andrew Vance of Oneonta; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Wednesday evening, April 12, 2000, from 7 to 9, when those who wish may call.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Andrew Deyo

MIDDLEFIELD — Mr. Andrew Deyo, 97, of The Meadows, Middlefield, died Saturday morning, April 8, 2000, at The Meadows.

He was born Aug. 14, 1902, in Guilderland, the son of Arthur B. and Minnie (Beasly) Deyo.

He married Ruth Easter Hardendorf on Dec. 23, 1933, in Altmont. Mrs. Deyo died Sept. 27, 1971.

Andrew worked on the D&H Railroad for 48 years, retiring Dec. 20, 1967.

He was a lifetime member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Retirement #1368 and was secretary and treasurer for about 30 years. He was a member of the Sixth Ward Athletic Club and was president for over 28 years. A member of the Boy Scouts of America Oneonta Troop 24, he also attended the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.

Andrew is survived by a daughter, Doris M. Deyo of Binghamton; a daughter-in-law, Reva Deyo of Oneonta; a granddaughter and her husband, Debbie M. and Kenneth Rittlinger of Oneonta; a great-grandson, Matthew Rittlinger of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Andrew was predeceased by a son, David A. Deyo, on Feb. 5, 1995, and three sisters, Lottie Clark and Martha and Margaret.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating. The family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 11, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. when those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Andrew Deyo.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elizabeth Schultze

ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — Elizabeth Jane Schultze "Lillian," 86, died Dec. 14, 1999, after a lengthy illness in Seminole, Fla.

She was born Nov. 7, 1913, in Co. Mayo, Ireland, the daughter of Ellen Carson and Walter McNally. The family arrived in Oneonta, N.Y., in 1921.

She married Alfred Schultze on Nov. 5, 1939.

She worked and modeled for Ladies Resort Clothing Boutiques on the Gulf Beaches.

She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America Court of St. John Vienne.

Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Barry of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Kathleen Pearson of Tavres, Fla.; a sister, Kathleen Dorritie of Oneonta, N.Y.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred, in 1994, and by two sisters and three brothers.

A memorial Mass will be held 8 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2000, at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, N.Y., with the Rev. Roman officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, N.Y., following the Mass.

Funeral arrangements were by Brett Funeral Home and Cremation Services, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Evelyn V. Spooner

SCHENEVUS — Evelyn V. Spooner, 74, of Schenevus died Friday, April 7, 2000, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

She was born May 7, 1925, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Charles and Mae (Crewell) Cooper.

She married William H. Spooner on Nov. 24, 1944, in East Moriches. He predeceased her on Dec. 18, 1990.

Mrs. Spooner had lived in Schenevus since 1961.

She was a sewing machine operator at RJ Dress in Oneonta.

Mrs. Spooner is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Patricia Spooner of Geneva and Omar and Denise Spooner of Schenevus; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Milton Cooper of Cobleskill, Louis Cooper of Cobleskill, Fred Cooper of Troy and Karlton Cooper of Worcester; five sisters, Lillian VanVorhis of Cobleskill, Alice Almasy of Albany, Virginia Vakoutis of Baltimore, Bonnie French of Worcester and Gloria Jean Cooper of Worcester; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Bernstein of  Pennsylvania and Dixie Keller of Lutheranville; many nieces and nephews and several cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Willard and Charles.

Per Mrs. Spooner's request, she was cremated and there will be no calling hours or service.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Spooner to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Rocco A. Bonadies

WORCESTER — Rocco A. Bonadies, 72, of Worcester, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Dobbs Ferry, the son of John and Angelina (Cavallo) Bonadies.

He married Isabelle Valentine on Sept. 17, 1955, in Ossining.

He served as a Merchant Marine from 1944-1945. He then entered into the United States Navy from 1945-1952. He was a radioman and also served on the USS Seattle Rock.

Mr. Bonadies had lived in the Worcester area for 32 years.

He worked as an electrical technician at the Lifesavers Plant in Canajoharie.

He is survived by his wife, Isabelle Bonadies of Worcester; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Shane Mattice of Oneonta and Michele and Joel Geerken of Marion, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Helen Bonadies of Oneonta; five grandchildren; two brothers, Alphonse Bonadies of Aiken, S.C., and Pat Bonadies of Florida; one sister, Antoinette DePolo of Oneonta; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Worcester. The Rev. Susan Strang will officiate.

Burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Bonadies to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Nina D. Kinney

FORT PLAIN — Mrs. Nina D. Kinney, 98, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2000, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 5, 1902, in  Texas Hill, Madison County, the daughter of LaDurna and Carrie (Uphray) Holmes.

On March 31, 1918, she married Lionel M. Kinney of Sherburne. He predeceased her on March 1, 1988.

Mrs. Kinney attended the Georgetown Area Schools and worked for the Luxray Mill in Fort Plain for many years as an inspector. She was a past member of the Ladies Aide, Oneonta.

She enjoyed bingo, pitch, music and dancing. At The Meadows, she enjoyed the church services. Holidays and her family were very special to her, especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Kinney is survived by a son, Melvin L. Kinney of Little Falls; a daughter, Hazel M. Smith of Richfield Springs; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and two great-nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a twin sister, Neta V. Stone, and a sister, Nellie Holmes Cummings.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, officiating. Burial will take place in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, at a later date.

Friends and family may call from 7 p.m. until service time on Wednesday, April 12.

Contributions in Mrs. Kinney's memory may be made to The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Walter J. Utter

ONEONTA — Walter J. Utter, 78, of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Monday evening, April 10, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Oneonta, the son of William and Izma Bullis Demmick Utter.

Walt married the former Mary J. Johnston on July 12, 1952, in  Pennsylvania, who survives him.

Walt had been a gas estimator for New York State Electric & Gas Corp. for 35 years, retiring in 1985. A lifelong area resident of Oneonta, Walt was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta and the Oneonta Elks Club.

Better known as Mr. Terrific he enjoyed his time with his friends drinking coffee. He loved music and dancing and, in his early years, was a member of the Santa Fe Riders Country and Western Band in Oneonta and later formed the Walt Utter Band in 1952, and continued with his band until the early 1960s.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Oneonta Country Club.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Utter of Oneonta. He was cherished by his children, Linda and son-in-law, James Herring, of Oneonta and Dorothy Jane and son-in-law, Larry Hubler, of Fairport; four sisters, Kate Maggio of Valrico, Fla., Barbara Doremus of Brandon, Fla., Betty Beardsley of Alabama and Carol Ackley of Oneonta; three brothers, Clayton Utter of Oneonta, Wayne Utter of Valrico, Fla., and Robert Utter of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Karen Herring of Charleston, S.C., Brian Herring of Oneonta, Randy (Denise) Hubler of Fairport and Christopher (Lisa) Hubler of West Henrietta; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Craig and Ryan Hubler; a special cousin, Ruth Ann Martin of Kingston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clifford Utter.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2000, from the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be later at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, after 2 p.m., Thursday, April 13, 2000. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday evening where a Lodge of Sorrow service will be held by the Oneonta Elks.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be given to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Walter J. Utter.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Harry L. Parshall

COOPERSTOWN — Harry L. Parshall Jr., 85, of Parshall Road, Cooperstown, died Tuesday morning, April 11, 2000, at The Meadows.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1914, in Cooperstown, the son of Harry L. Sr. and Grace E. (North) Parshall.

He married Doris B. Burns on Sept. 3, 1938, in East Orange, N.J.

Harry was raised in Cooperstown and graduated from the Cooperstown High School in 1932. Following his graduation from Utica Business College in 1935, he was employed by Standard Oil in New Jersey where he met his future wife. In 1939, Harry and his family returned to Cooperstown where he operated the family dairy farm in the town of Middlefield for more than 30 years.

A member of the Lions Club of Cooperstown since 1952, he was also a member of the Wedocandors Club for more than 40 years, the Mohican Club for more than 30 years and a former member of the board of directors of the Lakewood Cemetery Association in Cooperstown.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Harry also delighted in golfing with his friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Harry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris of Cooperstown; his son and daughter-in-law, Harry L. Parshall III and his wife, Jacqueline, of Jamesville; his granddaughter, Leigh-Ann Parshall of Jamesville; his sister, Gladys Devenpeck of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his brother-in-law, Ernest Chase of Cooperstown; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Anschuetz of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Clara Chase, on May 22, 1996.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Thursday, April 13, 2000, from 6 to 9 p.m. when Harry's family will be in attendance.

At the request of the family services will be private.

Burial will be at a later date in the Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
