Gladys S. Hayes, 92, formerly of Bloomingdale, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006 at Mercy Healthcare Center in Tupper Lake, where she had been a resident since August 2000. Born Jan. 12, 1914 in Chasm Falls, she was the daughter of Alfred and Lillian (Russell) Safford. For more than 50 years she was a resident of Bloomingdale where she raised her family and was a member of the Bloomingdale United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and the Saranac Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies’ Auxiliary. Upon the death of her husband, Boyd on Sept. 23, 1993, she moved to Malone and resided at Valehaven Home for Adults until moving to Mercy Healthcare Center. She is survived by one son, Gregory “Bucky” Hayes and his wife, Hung Mi of Lake Placid; two daughters: Lynn Owre of Hubbard, Ore. and Gwenn Bombard of Saranac Lake; six grandchildren: Gregory Hayes Jr., Dean Hayes, Dale Hayes, Dolores Dobie, Douglas Scott and Heather Moody; eight great-grandchildren: Brady Hayes, Serina Hayes, Chase Hayes, Colin Hayes, Aubrey Hayes, Allyson Scott, Lindsey Scott and Kaylee Moody; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband; four brothers: Herb, Floyd, Lee and Truman Safford; and three sisters: Elizabeth Avery, Vivian Martin and Lona Brooks. There will be no calling hours. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in Morningside Cemetery in Malone. James Lyle Berry, 84, died peacefully at his home in Saranac Lake, NY Monday, November 27, 2006. Born February 8, 1922 in St. Charles, Illinois he is survived by his wife Beverly (Bogart) Berry of 63 years, a son Roger Berry of St. Charles, IL, a daughter Phyliss, five grandchildren, Cy, Will and Ben Ellsworth all of Saranac Lake, Alicia Washburn and Jamie Berry of Illinois and four great grandchildren. Jim moved to Saranac Lake from St. Charles, IL in 1947 to be closer to his daughter and his son-in-law; the late Jay Ellsworth. He loved to spend time in the outdoors and was a great fisherman in particular. He was an excellent woodworker and made many original Adirondack crafts. He grew up in St. Charles, IL and at 16 joined the US Navy and barely missed being in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. His ship, the USS Northhampton, had a mooring line caught in its propeller the evening before the attack and could not get back into the harbor before they closed the harbor's submarine nets. That incident may have saved his live as his ship was in the sea outside of the harbor during the next day's invasion by the Japanese. His luck didn't last as the Northhampton was attacked and sunk December 31, 1942 at the Battle of Tassagaronga near Guadalcanal. Jim and his fellow surviving shipmates spent five hours in the Pacific Ocean before being rescued. After the war Jim returned to St. Charles, IL where he worked with his dad in his barbershop that had been in the family since 1910. In 1948 Jim opened a beauty shop in St. Charles and another barbershopw in Geneva, IL. Jim sold the businesses in 1974 and retired to Saranac Lake.
Jim was a big fan of the Saranac Lake High School football and hockey programs and he spent many years volunteering his services to the Saranac Lake Pee Wee HockeyAssociation. He enjoyed following his grandchildren's sports careers as they completed for Saranac Lake and later went on to compete at the collegiate level in both hockey and football. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Presbyterian Great Hall Thursday, November 30, 2006 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Donations in his memory may be made to High Peaks Hospice and the Saranac Lake High School Center Ice Booster Club in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.

Ann Helen Denis, 73, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006 at Mercy Healthcare Center in Tupper Lake where she had resided for the past year with her husband. Born Nov. 12, 1933 in Long Lake, she was the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Stephenson) Rice. Mrs. Denis graduated from Long Lake High School and married Howard J. Denis on April 2, 1953 in Selma, Ala. where Mr. Denis was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. The couple moved to Tupper Lake in the early 1950s where Mrs. Denis was employed at Sunmount D.D.S.O. After her retirement in 1992, they spent winters in Hudson, Fla. Mrs. Denis loved traveling, camping and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 54 years; three daughters: Debra Moody and her husband Jack, Cheryl Mercurio and her husband Tony and Maureen Hutchins and her husband Shawn, all of Tupper Lake; a son Donald of Dania, Fla.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Ovitt of North Carolina; and a brother, Arthur and his wife Ann of Rome, N.Y. There will be no calling hours. A private memorial service and burial will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Adirondack Medical Center Mercy-Uihlein Appeal. The Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Velmay Ganos, 94, formerly of 46 Pontiac Street, Saranac Lake, NY died on Sunday, November 26, 2006 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. She was born on April 11, 1912, in Lyon Mountain, NY, to Nelson and Adelaide Caron. She was employed at Ray Brook State Sanitarium where she met her husband, George C. Ganos, who predeceased her in 1994. She also had been a telephone operator with the New York Telephone Co. Survivors include two daughters, Carol A. McGrath and her companion Todd Tompkins, both of Rochester, NY, and Alice M. Nunes of Glenville, NY; John J. Nunes, son-in-law; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and family member Robert E. McGrath of Rochester, NY. There will be no calling hours. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at St. Bernard's Church, at 11:15 AM. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Saranac Lake.

Jane Elizabeth Vagnarelli, age 80, of 1413 Gratiot Ave., Saginaw, MI died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at the Saginaw Geriatrics Home. Born in Keene, New York on February 25, 1926, she was the daughter of Frank and Sarah (Brennan) Vagnarelli. Jane had been a resident of Michigan for many years and had also lived in Saranac Lake and Keene. She was a graduate of the Registered Nurse program at Fanny Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vermont. Jane had been a nurse at the VA Hospital in Tupper Lake, NY and the Keene Valley, NY Hospital and had been charge nurse in Saginaw for many years. Jane was a communicant at Holy Family Catholic Church in Saginaw and was a very active member of the parish. Along with her companion Grovener Bissell, she travelled extensively and was also a very generous donor to many charities. She is survived by a sister: Adelaide Nadler of Elmira, NY, a brother: Thomas Vagnarelli of Saginaw, MI, two sisters-in-law: Shirley Vagnarelli of Keene,NY and Mary Vagnarelli of Florida and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Frank Vagnarelli, her mother Sarah Brennan, her brothers: Louis Vagnarelli and Francis Vagnarelli, her sister Rita Vagnarelli, her foster brother: Daniel McAuliffe, and her long time companion: Grovener Bissell. Calling hours took place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Sunday, November 26. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, November 27, 2006 at 11:15 A.M. at St. Bernard's Church., with Father Patrick Mundy officiating. Burial will follow at Norton Cemetery in Keene. Elfriede T. Dramm passed on to join her beloved husband, Herbert A.B. Dramm, sister Waitraut and brother Klaus on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006. She will be remembered and missed by her family and friends.
She lived in Lake Placid for the last 26 years, along with her son Uwe H. Dramm and his wife Denise and their three children, Stephen, Ara and Tyra Dramm. Elfriede had two beautiful great-grandchildren by her grandson Ara and his wife Cecily: Helena and Annelise. Elfriede came to this country from Germany in 1956 with her husband and son, working as a knitter and sewing machine engineer. She worked many years designing and sewing. They moved to Lake Placid in 1980, where they owned and operated Placid Bay Inn. Elfriede enjoyed her retirement working in the garden, baking cheese cakes for everyone’s birthday and going to the Calvary Baptist Church in Wilmington where she was able to express her deep faith in Jesus Christ through her angelic voice. She spent many special days with her dear friends at the church. Our family would like to thank the many kind people that helped her after she lost her husband of 59 years. The kindness of her many friends, the people at Keene Valley Neighborhood House, the caring staff of the Saranac Lake Hospital, the Calvary Baptist Church, and especially all the folks at Saranac Lake Hospice.
They comforted and cared for both her and us in her last days. There will not be a service. The family is requesting that instead of sending something to show us your thoughts, you kindly send a small donation to the Saranac Lake Hospice. The Clark Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carol I. Roberts, 62, of Tupper Lake, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake following a long illness. Born on Aug. 12, 1944 in Tupper Lake, she was the daughter of Leon and Ruth (Trombley) LaFlamme. She attended local schools and married William Roberts, June 13, 1967. Carol worked at the O.W.D. Company for a time and focused her energy on raising seven children. She is survived by one son William III of Tupper Lake; six daughters: Teresa Sapone of Alabama, Tina Cooley of Lowville, Christine Moss of  Texas, Tammy Roberts of Sandy Creek, Billie Jo and her husband Edward Mosher of Kansas and Brandy Brunett of Tupper Lake; one granddaughter Samantha  White who resided with Carol; 13 other grandchildren; a brother Rick LaFlamme of Florida; two sisters: Roxanne Cromie of Phoenix, N.Y. and Linda  LeBlanc and her husband Edward Jr. of Tupper Lake. She was predeceased by her parents; one brother Floyd “Buck” LaFlamme; and one sister Lisa McClemets. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday, March 16 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake. Burial will be in May in the parish cemetery. Mary Abdallah, 101, died Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she has resided for the past seven months. Born Aug. 17, 1905 in Tupper Lake, she was the daughter of Ovila and Marie (Furnia) Turpin. Mrs. Abdallah attended local schools. She married Charles Abdallah on April 28, 1925 at Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. She and her husband owned and operated the Northland Hotel from 1934 to 1960. Mrs. Abdallah then worked six years as head resident at Whitman Hall at St. Lawrence University in Potsdam. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Dutch Treat Bridge Club. She is survived by 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1960; two daughters: Thelma Mullin, Jenne Sulavik; and one son Charles Jr. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 16 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake. Burial will be in May in the parish cemetery. Robert D. Allen, 82, of Cascade Road in Lake Placid died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Fla. Born on March 18, 1924 in Malone, he was the son of Alfred and Frances (Breen) Allen. He was a graduate of Paul Smith’s College and the Simmons School of Embalming in Syracuse. Mr. Allen was married to Gloria (Fox) Allen. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. Bob worked in Lake Placid as a manager of the town of North Elba Park District Olympic Arena retiring in 1981. He was manager of Appleton Arena at St. Lawrence University from 1981 to 1983 and also worked as as event coordinator for the Olympic Regional Development Authority from 1983 to 1989. Mr. Allen was president of New York State Hockey Association for 25 years from 1954 to 1979. In 2000, the New York State Amateur Hockey Association named their scholarship after him and each year four scholarships are awarded in his name. He was past secretary and vice president of USA Hockey (AHAUS) and director emeritus. In 2005, Bob was recognized for his 40 years service to USA Hockey. Also in 2005, USA Hockey named the Women’s Hockey Player of the Year Award the Bob Allen Women’s Hockey Player of the Year Award. He was the chairman of the gold medal-winning U.S. Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team in 1998, and considered the “Godfather” of US Women’s Ice Hockey and was 2002 Olympic torch runner. Bob was a member of the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee, chairman of Ice Hockey and planning and engineering committees for the 1980 Olympics. Bob was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame and was involved in organizing the Kennedy Games, FISU Games and Deaflympics, and in 1985 he was crowned King of Winter. He was a charter member of the Lake Placid Sports Council, the Lake Placid Pee Wee Association, past member of the boards of the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce, the Skating Club of Lake Placid and the Lake Placid Horse Show Association. He served on the board of the United States Figure Skating Association and was a long-time Kiwanis club member. Mr. Allen is survived by his children: Dennis and David Allen of Lake Placid, Darcy Pattison and her husband  Taylor of East Northport and Deborah Modrovsky and her husband Albert of Park City, Utah; his brother Vernon Allen of Clayton; his sister Rita Sessions of Winter Haven, Fla.; and six grandchildren: Halina Allen, Ashley and Sarah Pattison, Daniel and Alison Modrovsky and Breen Allen. He was predeceased by his wife on Nov. 14, 1988. Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 14 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Bible vigil service at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid with the Rev. Michael Gaffney officiating. Burial will be in May in the St. Agnes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Bob’s Memory be made to the Lake Placid, Pee Wee Association, P.O. Ellen Louise Lamoy Hartson, 81, of 29 Winona Ave., Saranac Lake, died Tuesday evening, March 6, 2007. Born Nov. 30, 1925 in Plattsburgh, she was the daughter of Forrest and Phoebe (Lenaghen) Lamoy. Ellen was employed by New York Telephone for 35 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Mount Morris Whiteface Chapter 106 and the Telephone Pioneers of America. She is survived by her children: Nancy Somerville and her husband Robert and Louise Hartson, all of Saranac Lake; two brothers: Forrest Lamoy and his wife Eva of Long Lake and Carlton Lamoy and his wife Theola of Saranac Lake; several nieces and nephews and close friends, including a very special friend Yumiko Funabashi-Usami of Chiba, Japan who spent two years living with her while attending North Country Community College. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Charles M. Hartson; and a sister Olive Kopocinski. Mrs. Hartson will be cremated and there will be no calling hours. There will be a gathering of friends and family in the early summer. Arrangements are with the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Ellen’s daughters would like to thank doctors Thomashow, Roland and Hill, and the nurses in the Renal Dialysis Unit for the wonderful care they gave to their mother. Sandra L. Tanner, 59, of 155 Lake St., Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born July 25, 1947 in Saranac Lake, she was the daughter of Earl Martin. She married Roy J. Tanner on July 25, 1976 in Saranac Lake. Sandra was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake and worked as a cook and waitress for many years at various area restaurants. She later was employed as a dispatcher for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation until February of this year. Sandy also worked at the Lake Clear Elementary School as a monitor and in the cafeteria. Most recently she was employed as the head cook at the Bloomingdale School. She is survived by her companion Kenneth J. McLaughlin of Saranac Lake; her son Charles Strack and his wife Sheila of Star Lake; four daughters: Sherry Kennedy and her companion of Tupper Lake, Wendy Dupree and her husband Tom and their son Brandon of Saranac Lake, Tanya Ratelle of Tupper Lake and Cassandra Tanner of Tupper Lake; two step-sons: Kirk McLaughlin of Grey, Tenn. and Derek McLaughlin and his wife Nancy of Saranac Lake; her sister Sonia Carr of Fulton; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; her close family members Nancy and Dave Whitson of Saranac Lake; and her dog, “her little girl” Howi. She was predeceased by her husband Oct. 24, 1988; two brothers; and a brother-in-law Okie Rcarr. Calling hours will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Frederick Dennis officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in St. John’s Cemetery in Paul Smiths. Peter Carroll Browne, a gentleman and valiant fighter, 82, of 652 Indian Carry Road, Tupper Lake, died Sunday, March 4, 2007 at his home. Born Nov. 26, 1924 in Nashville, Tenn., he was the son of Curtis and Winifred (Chisolm) Browne and the devoted husband of Jean Hancock, whom he married May 19, 1946 in Woodmere. In 1943, Mr. Browne graduated from the Gunnery School in  Washington, Conn. and then attended Yale University from November 1943 to March 1945, where he participated in the V-12 program. Upon release from active duty from the United States Navy, Mr. Browne completed his education at Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. During World War II, Mr. Browne served in the Pacific Theater as ensign in the U.S. Navy. He was released from active duty in August 1946 and was honorably discharged in September 1955 from the United States Naval Reserve. Mr. Browne was commodore of the Cedarhurst Yacht Club in Lawrence from 1970 to 1973. He was also one of only two former commodores elected to commodore emeritus status in the club’s history. He enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing and building model ships. He is a former member of Ducks Unlimited and in his later years served on the Saranac Lake Planning Board. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Jean Browne of Tupper Lake; two sons: Peter C. Browne Jr. and his wife Megan of Goose Creek, S.C. and Curtis N. Browne II and his wife Jodie of Sherman, Conn.; four daughters: Pamela B. Kruger of Ashburn, Va., Hilary B. Fitzpatrick and her husband Michael of Earlysville, Va., Prudence B. Purcell and her husband Jim of Ridgefield, Conn. and Deirdre B. Griffith and her husband Paul of Gainesville, Va.; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; one sister Sheila B. McCarthy; and a son-in-law Richard H. Kruger. Private family funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Margaret Payment, 82, of Tupper Lake, died Thursday, March 1, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Dec. 7, 1924 in Antwerp, she was the daughter of Peter and Edith (Miller) Feickert. On Jan. 12, 1942, she married Ivan L. Payment. The couple owned and operated Ivan’s Lounge (now known as Al’s Lounge) for many years. She worked on the Board of Mediation for Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, administered the WIC and STAR programs for Southern Franklin County and worked on the New York State Workers Compensations Board. Mrs. Payment also served as past president of the Republican Women’s Auxiliary and was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She is survived by two daughters: Karen Spencer and her husband Larry of Walworth and Ellen Payment of Rochester; two sons: Edward and his wife Michele of Baldwinsville and Michael and his wife Deborah of Tupper Lake; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband on April 13, 2002; three brothers: Harold, Lesley and Peter; and two sisters: Mary Feickert and Elizabeth Bresett. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 at the Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. Burial will be in May in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are with the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad or the Tri-Lakes Humane Society.

Flora K. Shene, 84, died Saturday evening, March 3, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Oct. 6, 1922 in Vermontville, she was the daughter of Alton and Sophia (Baker) Shene. Flora was a lifelong resident of Vermontville, and attended Vermontville School and later Bloomingdale School. After leaving school, she began working for the Asplin Tree Farm pruning and cutting trees, particularly during the Christmas season when she also helped make wreaths. After that, she worked for the Troy Laundry and later for the Haywards Laundry. She then began housekeeping work starting at American Management Association in 1957, then for the Hotel Saranac. For a short time, she was also a housekeeper at Ray Brook’s Drug Rehabilitation Center, finishing up at the Trudeau Institute. More than all of this, she was a constant caregiver of her sister Marion Symonds from 2000 to 2007. Flora loved knitting and gave away many knit goods such as mittens. She enjoyed crossword puzzels, watching the birds at her window and feed from the tube feeder. She also enjoyed watching deer reach and feed from this bird feeder. Flora was very active in her church, the Nazerene Church, in Vermontville. She joined when she was 17 and all through the years enjoyed playing piano for services. She was on the church board for many years and was prominent in teen functions. She is survived by her sister Marion Symonds of Lake Placid; her nephews: Donnald Symonds and his wife Linda of Vermontville and Jerry Symonds and his wife Sheryl of Idaho; her nieces: Annette  Johnson and her husband Russell of Vermontville, Luella Williams and her husband Rod of Colorado Springs,  Colo., Arles Sinclair and her husband Loyd of Rockland, MA, Verna Davis and her husband Ed of Galloway, N.J. and Joyce Euber and her husband Chris of Vermontville; and also many other nieces and nephews. Flora was predeceased by her parents; three brothers: Herbert, Francis and Joseph Shene; and two sisters: Clara Bova and Edith Shene. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7 at the Nazarene Church in Vermontville with the Rev. David Drake Sr. officiating. Burial will be in May in the Union Cemetery in Vermontville. Friends wishing to remember Ms. Shene may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, or to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.
