David C. Reed

ROXBURY — David C. Reed, 56, of Roxbury, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at St. Peters Hospital, Albany.

He was born Nov. 7, 1943, in Conesville, the son of Burr Mattice Reed and Dorothy Anna Fink.

He married Sandra German on Dec. 23, 1967, in Roxbury.

He was in the United States Marines from July 11, 1961, to July 15, 1965. After leaving the Marines, Dave worked at GE in Schenectady, Daitch creamery and Briggs Lumber Co., Roxbury. Since June 1, 1975, he has worked for the Margaretville Telephone Co.

He was a 30-year member of Ralph S. Ives Jr., American Legion Post, Roxbury.

Dave was an active bowler and had been in leagues in Stamford and Margaretville bowling alleys. He was an avid reader.

He was a member of Shephard Hills Golf Club and had enjoyed playing golf at many other courses with many of his friends.

He graduated from Stamford Central School in 1961.

Dave is survived by his wife, Sandra Reed of Roxbury; his mother, Dorothy Robinet of Napa,  Calif.; stepson, Keith Slauson of Williamstown; stepdaughter, Carol Shultis of Roxbury; two beloved granddaughters, Trisha and Larissa; sister, Thelma Major of DesMoines, Iowa; brother, William Reed of Napa,  Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in memory of Dave Reed to the American Heart Association or the Ambulance of the Roxbury Fire Department, Roxbury, N.Y. 12474.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Winifred Goode

WALTON — Winifred Ruth Goode, 83, of Walton died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Ruth was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Rock Rift, the daughter of Seth and Carrie M. Beismer Davidson.

She married Arthur Goode on April 29, 1950, in Walton.

A graduate of Walton High in 1934, Ruth was an executive secretary at Bendix/Amphenol in Sidney for 35 years.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur; her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Charles Ballard of Englewood, Fla.; brother-in-law and wife, James and Florence Goode; and a nephew, Kenneth Goode, all of Bennington, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Shiela Buchanan and Faye Szczepczynski; and a special nephew, Gerry Walker, all of Walton.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 14, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Clark & Winter Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. Eugene F. Willis officiating. Burial following in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Clark & Winter Funeral Home on Thursday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the Walton Emergency Squad in the name of Ruth Goode will be appreciated.

Mary Cooper

OTEGO — Mary (Georgia) Cooper, 56, of Otego, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 10, 2000.

She is survived by her parents, Carlton and Lois Georgia; her children, Jenni Earle, Megan Jensen, Wesley Earle and Carolyn Cooper; three grandsons; a sister, Martha Nolf; a brother, Milton Georgia; two nieces; and three nephews.

Mary was a graduate of the State University College at Oneonta, and taught school at West Laurens, South New Berlin and Greene before moving to  Texas in 1978. She returned to Otego in 1993. She retired from the federal government as a statistical analyst.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the DeMarco-Fritsch Funeral Home, 1605 Witherill St., Endicott. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to the time of the service.

Nancy S. Zoeller

OTEGO — Nancy S. Zoeller, 70, of Otego, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, peacefully at her home.

She was born July 9, 1929, in Albany, the daughter of Albert J. and Maude (VanWie) Schreiber.

Nancy enjoyed doing crafts.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Philip W. Zoeller of Otego; a daughter, Ann Holdrege of Otego; two sons, Philip A. Zoeller of Oneonta and Paul W. and Geri Zoeller of Otego; her brother, John A. and Pat Schreiber of Otego; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Gilbert McCarthy and Bernice Manzer; and sister-in-law, Barbara and Don Field of Bainbridge.

Funeral services will be private.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Sandra Spannhake

HAMDEN — Sandra May Spannhake, 55, of Hamden, died unexpectedly on Friday, April 7, 2000, at her home.

She was bon May 1, 1944, in Delhi, the daughter of Walter and Yvonne Barkman. Her father predeceased her.

She married Fred Spannhake on Sept. 9, 1989, in Hamden.

Sandra is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Michelle Furgerson of Delhi; two grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Karin and Robert Backus of East Meredith; one niece and one nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Per Mrs. Spannhake's request, she was cremated and there will be no calling hours or service.

Walter J. Utter

ONEONTA — Walter J. Utter, 78, of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Monday evening, April 10, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Oneonta, the son of William Utter and Izma Bullis Dimmick.

Walt married the former Mary J. Johnston on July 12, 1952, in  Pennsylvania, who survives him.

Walt had been a gas estimator for New York State Electric & Gas Corp. for 35 years, retiring in 1985.

A lifelong resident of Oneonta, Walt was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, and the Oneonta Elks Club.

Better known as "Mr. Terrific," Walt enjoyed having coffee with his special friends. He loved music and dancing, and in his early years, he was a member of the Santa Fe Riders Country and Western Band in Oneonta. He later formed the Walt Utter Band in 1952 and continued with his band until the early 1960s.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Oneonta Country Club.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Utter, of Oneonta. He is cherished by his children, Linda and son-in law, James Herring, of Oneonta and Dorothy Jane and son-in-law, Larry Hubler, of Fairport; four sisters, Kate Maggio of Valrico, Fla., Barbara Doremus of Brandon, Fla., Betty Beardsley of Alabama and Carol Ackley of Oneonta; three brothers, Clayton Utter of Oneonta, Wayne Utter of Valrico, Fla., and Robert Utter of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Karen Herring of Charleston, S.C., Brian Herring of Oneonta, Randy (Denise) Hubler of Fairport and Christopher (Lisa) Hubler of West Henrietta; three great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Craig and Ryan Hubler; a special cousin, Ruth Ann Martin, of Kingston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clifford Utter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, after 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2000. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening, where a Lodge of Sorrow service will be held by the Oneonta Elks.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be given to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta N.Y. 13820 or to the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Walter J. Utter.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Doris I. Murphy

FRANKLIN — Doris I. Murphy, 73, of Franklin, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 27, 1926, in Colchester, the daughter of William and Mabel (Frisbee) Murphy.

Doris retired from the Keith Clark Co. in Sidney, where she worked for 10 years. Before that, she worked for Ruffino's in Oneonta.

She enjoyed ceramics and for many years operated a ceramic shop and conducted classes at her home in the town of Franklin.

She was a member of the Oneonta Women of the Moose.

Doris is survived by three sons, Gerald A. Reed of Oneonta, Roger M. Reed of Meridale and Steven D. Murphy of Granville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Albert Murphy of Walton, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Aloma Ross.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 934, Franklin, N.Y. 13775.

Arrangements were made by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Zada Limerick

ONEONTA — Zada Limerick, 86, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford, after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 31, 1914, in Troy, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Johnson) Limerick.

Miss Limerick was the former editor in chief of Readers Guide in New York City, until her retirement in 1980.

She has been a resident of Oneonta since 1992.

Zada is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Samuel C. and Nellie Limerick of Oneonta; two nieces, Mrs. James (Carolyn) Austin of Oneonta and Mrs. Martin (Betty) Goldband of Glen Rock, N.J.; several grandnephews; and one grandniece.

Private memorial services will be held later at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be later in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Genevieve Bozanic

COLLIERSVILLE — Genevieve L. "Jane" Bozanic, 78, of Colliersville, died on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born on Jan. 22, 1922, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late George E. and Lulu Cox Loft. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Nick Bozanic Sr., on June 6, 1997.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Nick (Britt) Bozanic Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters, Sheila (Charles) Osborn of Greenfield Center and Sarah "Sallie" Bozanic of Georgia; a brother, Dewey Loft of Schenevus; two grandchildren, Shelly Annis of Balston Spa and Corey Osborn of Rock City Falls; three great-grandchildren, Samantha Annis, Anthony DeFlippo and Blade Robert Osborn.

Jane was a lifetime resident of the area. She was the secretary for the International Studies Department at the State University College at Oneonta for more 20 years, and a bookkeeper for Shearers Express Trucking for nine years.

She was a member of the New York State Retiree Alumni Association at SUCO, and a member of the SUCO Golden Alumni Staff Retirees Group.

She was an avid bowler taking part in the Strike and Spare Bowling League for many years at the Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. Jane was also a WAC volunteer during the World War II, and a member of the Milford Center Baptist Church.

Services for Jane will be Saturday, April 15, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the College of Oneonta Foundation for the Benefit of International Students at SUCO in Jane's memory.

Gloria A. Mastro

ONEONTA — Gloria A. Mastro, 72, of Oneonta, died Wednesday evening, April 12, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born June 13, 1927, in Sharon Springs, the daughter of Robert and Anne (LaGuardia) LaSacco.

She married Patrick T. Mastro on Sept. 28, 1946, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

An area resident for 54 years, Gloria was a member of St. Mary's Church, and its Rosary Society, in which she was very active. She was also a member of the Oneonta Business Women's Club.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 53 years, Patrick T. Mastro of Oneonta; three daughters and sons-in-law, Roseanne and Carl Miller of Oneonta, Kim and Keith Trombly of Schenectady, and Jacqueline and Steven Thibodeau of Cohoes; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark and Beth Mastro of Saratoga and Patrick Mastro of Latham; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Tom Allen of Sepulveda,  Calif. She is also survived by two aunts and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, April 15, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call on Friday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 4 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Penny Schwartz

STAMFORD — Services for Penny Schwartz will be held on Sunday, April 16, 2000, at 3:30 p.m. at the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford. After services there will be a gathering at the Stamford Baptist Church on Lake Street, Stamford.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Stamford Baptist Church Van Fund, Lake Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167; or to the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Gladys L. Anderson

ONEONTA — Gladys L. Anderson, 81, of Oneonta, died on Thursday, April 13, 2000, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born March 8, 1919, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of the late George and Laura Allen Anderson.

She is survived by a sister, Florence Anderson, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and several cousins.

Miss Anderson was a resident of Oneonta since 1962, coming from Cincinnati, Ohio. She taught elementary school in Ohio before her tenure as a professor of childhood education at the State University College at Oneonta from 1962 until her retirement in 1985.

She was a graduate of Wilmington College in Ohio and attended the University of Cincinnati and University of Miami of Ohio before earning her doctorate at Indiana University.

She was a member of the Elizabeth Circle of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, as well as acting as its president for several years, and held many local and state offices in the United Methodist Women's Society.

She was a member of the Westwood United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Miss Anderson was also a member of the New York State Teacher's Retirement System; Delta Kappa Gamma, Rho Chapter, of the Honorary Society for Women Educators; the American Association of University Women, Oneonta branch; the Storytelling Center of Oneonta; the National Education Association; the Childhood Education Association; the League of Women Voters; and the Business and Professional Women's Association.

She loved traveling with her sister, Florence; reading mysteries, among other books; and spending time with her faithful pet feline, Buffie.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 17, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta with the Rev. William D. Bouton officiating.

Interment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta in Gladys' memory.
