Genevieve Bozanic

COLLIERSVILLE — Genevieve L. "Jane" Bozanic, 78, of Colliersville, died on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born on Jan. 22, 1922, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late George E. and Lulu Cox Loft. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Nick Bozanic Sr., on Jan. 6, 1997.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Nick (Britt) Bozanic Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters, Sheila (Charles) Osborn of Greenfield Center and Sarah "Sallie" Bozanic of Georgia; a brother, Dewey Loft, of Schenevus; two grandchildren, Shelly Annas of Ballston Spa and Corey Osborn of Rock City Falls; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha Annas, Anthony DeFlippo and Blade Robert Osborn.

Jane was a lifetime resident of the area. She was the secretary for the International Studies Department at the State University College at Oneonta for more than 20 years, and a bookkeeper for Shearers Express Trucking for nine years.

She was a member of the New York State Retiree Alumni Association at SUCO, and a member of the SUCO Golden Alumni Staff Retirees Group.

She was an avid bowler, taking part in the Strike and Spare Bowling League for many years at the Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. Jane was also a WAC volunteer during the World War II, and a member of the Milford Center Baptist Church.

Services for Jane will be Saturday, April 15, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the College of Oneonta Foundation for the Benefit of International Students at SUCO in Jane's memory.

Florence Holloway

YORK, Pa. — Miss Florence J. Holloway, 91, of York, Pa., and formerly of Delhi, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at the Colonial Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in York, Pa.

She was born Nov. 1, 1908, in Delhi.

Miss Holloway was a sales manager for Houbigant Co. in New York City.

She was never married.

Miss Holloway was predeceased by her parents, Lula C. (Culver) Holloway and Robert N. Holloway.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Crystal Holloway, of Juno Beach, Fla., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

There will be no calling hours.

Local funeral arrangements were made by Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

James VanWhy

AFTON — James VanWhy, 37, of 486 Melody Hill Road, Afton, and formerly of Norwich, died unexpectedly April 12, 2000, at his home.

He was born Aug. 11, 1962, in Sidney, the son of the late Uriah (James) and Judith (Hale) VanWhy.

He is survived by his sisters, Laura Brown of Meridale and Lisa and Carlyle Hoffman of Garrattsville; and his brother, Timothy Brown of Florida.

He was a graduate of Sidney High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an avid sportsman.

Friends may call at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, on Saturday, April 22, 2000, from 1-3 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Afton Emergency Squad.

Interment will be private in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Elsie H. Etienne

KINGSTON — Elsie H. Etienne, 91, of Kingston, and formerly of Morris, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000.

A memorial funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Scott III officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Marie E. Saltys

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Friends and relatives of Marie E. Saltys, who died Jan. 29, 2000, are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

Interment in St. Joseph's will immediately follow.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Virginia E. Cassata

MOUNT UPTON — Virginia E. Cassata, 77, of 2005 state Highway 8, Mount Upton died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at her home.

She was born on Jan. 31, 1923, in the Bronx, the daughter of James and Marian Gilmartin.

On Sept. 22, 1942, in the Bronx, she married Henry Cassata Sr., who survives.

Besides her husband, Henry, of Mount Upton; she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Henry Jr. and Lida Cassata of Mount Upton; her daughters and son-in-law, Madeline Bereski of Lincoln Park, N.J. and Marion and James Barnes of Mount Upton. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dina Cassata, Michael Cassata and Anthony Cassata, all of New Jersey and Dana Marie Davis, Katherina Lisa Cassata and Nickolas Joseph Cassata, all of Mount Upton; and her great-grandson, Matthew Ward.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Matthew Bereski.

She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed crocheting.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. from the C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Joseph Schuck officiating.

Friends may call at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Laurence J. Doran

COOPERSTOWN — Laurence J. Doran, 95, of Cooperstown, died late Saturday evening, April 15, 2000, at The Meadows.

He was born on Jan. 12, 1905, in Cooperstown, a son of Laurence O. and Katherine (Kraham) Doran.

A native of Cooperstown, Larry attended Cooperstown schools.

Over the years he was employed in various jobs, including manager of Smalley's Theatre on Main Street, where he also served as projectionist. Upon leaving Smalley's, he became projectionist at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, retiring in 1986.

Larry was very close to his brother, Jimmy Doran, sharing a home together at 57 Elm St. until Jimmy's death in 1983.

During the period that J.J. Newberry's had a lunch counter, Larry always enjoyed having his noontime meals there and socializing with the other patrons.

He was a member for more than 50 years of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department Company No. 2 and served many terms as president and treasurer of the Cooperstown Fire Department. A member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown, Larry also served two terms on the Village Board and was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.

Larry is survived by several cousins including Patricia Taugher, Stuart Taugher, Owen Kraham and his wife, Anna, all of Cooperstown, and Eileen Goodenow of Clinton.

He was predeceased by his brother, James K. Doran, on Dec. 21, 1983, and his cousin, Mrs. Esther M. Munford, on March 3, 2000.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Doran family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to a charity or organization of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Harriet M. Fay

ONEONTA — Harriet M. Fay, 68, of Oneonta died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was the daughter of John G. and Ema L. Klinder Pulyara.

Harriet was married to Guy E. Fay, who survives her.

Harriet was a member of the Women of the Moose since 1967, giving 33 years of dedicated service. She served in many capacities while earning her degrees, her friendship degree on May 1, 1971, star recorder degree on June 1, 1975, college of regents degree on June 1, 1976, and grand deputy regents degree in 1987. Harriet conducted the meetings for the recorder sessions and executive officers sessions from 1997-1999.

A service of remembrance will he held 2 p.m., Thursday, April 20, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Women of the Moose will officiate the service.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Clarence E. Jeffrey

MOUNT UPTON — Clarence E. Jeffrey, 75, of 136 High Bridge Road, Mount Upton, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at his home.

He was born on June 15, 1924, in Norwalk, Conn., the son of the late Clarence H. and Mildred Webb Jeffrey.

On June 6, 1948, in South Norwalk, Conn., he married Marjorie Lyons, who survives.

Besides his wife, Marjorie, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Pastor John and Billie Jeffrey of Scranton, Pa., William and Audrey Jeffrey of Holmesville, and Pastor James and Alberta Jeffrey of Grand Rapids, Mich.; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Tom  Jackson of Temecula,  Calif.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Rose Jeffrey of Norwalk, Conn. and Willis and Ann Jeffrey of South Norwalk, Conn.; his sisters and brother-in-law, Frances Whitney of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. and Clara and Jack Wetmore of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in both the European and Pacific theatres.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Upton and a former member of the Borden Hose Co. of Mount Upton.

An avid outdoorsman, he was a former member of the Rockdale Rod & Gun Club. He was an auto mechanic for many years prior to working for Borden's in Bainbridge from where he retired in 1989.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2000, at 1 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Mount Upton, with the Rev. William Kuhn and Pastors John Jeffrey and James Jeffrey co-officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Friends may call at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Mount Upton, Hospice of Chenango County or the American Cancer Society.

Hans Koopmans

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Hans Koopmans of Richfield Springs passed away Friday, April 14, 2000, at home with his loving wife, Edna, by his side.

Hans was born on Sept. 25, 1912, in Alkmaar, Netherlands, the son of Jan and Aaltja Winder Koopmans.

He attended school in the Netherlands and went on to graduate from Naval School there.

Hans served as an engineer officer in the Dutch Merchant Marines, employed by the Royal Netherlands Steamship Co. prior to World War II.

A diverse man, Hans traveled and worked around the world. At one time, he was a power plant superintendent at a Firestone Rubber Plantation in Africa and locally at the Dairlylea Co. in Vernon, retiring in 1981.

Hans was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Coast Guard.

Hans was united in marriage to Edna Meredith on July 11, 1947, in Great Neck, Long Island, a blessed union of 52 years. The Koopmans family owned and operated a farm in South Columbia for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Edna, at home; his brother, Rinse Koopmans in St. Pancras, Netherlands; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Koopmans was predeceased by his beloved son, Jan Meredith Koopmans, in 1973, and his sister, Yannie Koster.

On Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at 2 p.m. a Service from the Book of Common Prayer of the Burial Office and Holy Communion will be offered at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Main Street, Richfield Springs, with Fr. John Dixon Bartle, rector, officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery will follow.

There are no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the charity of your choice in Hans' name. Donation envelopes will be available at the church.

All arrangements have been entrusted to the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 East Main St., Mohawk.

Eleanor Shultis

SUN CITY, Ariz. — Eleanor Louise Davidson Shultis passed away April 10, 2000, in Sun City, Ariz., after a long illness. She was 71.

Eleanor was born July 1, 1928, in Franklin, N.Y., the youngest of seven children of Clifford and Clara Davidson.

Following her graduation from Abraham L. Kellogg High School in Treadwell, N.Y., she was employed by the New York Telephone Co. in Oneonta, N.Y.

She married Hanford John Shultis on Aug. 14, 1948, at Mundale, N.Y. The couple operated a dairy farm in Denver, N.Y. for 20 years. In 1968, the family moved to Cobleskill, N.Y. and eventually to Fonda, N.Y.

In 1990, Eleanor retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Albany, N.Y., where she had been an employee for 13 years, and her husband retired from the insurance business.

Since then they have resided at 9331 W. Arrowhead Drive in Sun City, Ariz., 85351.

In recent years, Eleanor was a volunteer in Sun City at the Boswell Memorial Hospital.

Eleanor was predeceased by three brothers, Donald Davidson, Bruce Davidson, and Lawrence (Jim) Davidson.

Eleanor is survived by Hank, her husband of 51 years; two brothers, Douglas Davidson of Franklin, N.Y., and Kenneth Reed Davidson of Sidney, N.Y.; one sister, Dorothy Cartwright, formerly of Denver, N.Y, and now of Reading, Pa.; five children, Edward James Shultis of Roxbury, N.Y., Susan Jean Dziedzic of Phoenix, Ariz., Linda Ann Hoffmann of Middleburgh, N.Y., Patricia Mickle of Sun City, Ariz., and Amy Beth Sanford of Johnstown, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for mid-August in New York.

Memorial gifts may be sent to Hospice of the Valley, West Office, 9720 W. Peoria Ave., Suite 128, Peoria, Ariz. 85345, or to the Fonda-Fultonville Methodist Church in Fonda, N.Y.

Donald Pickering

UNADILLA — Mr. Donald Pickering, 78, of Covered Bridge Road, Unadilla, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Pickering was born May 12, 1921, in Endicott, the son of Russell and Mildred (Sackett) Pickering.

He married Shirley Ford on Nov. 29, 1945. They shared 54 years of marriage.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Central Europe during World War II.

In 1978, he retired as a math teacher from the Oneonta High School.

For more than 20 years, he was a modern western square dance caller.

Mr. Pickering was a member of the United Methodist Church in Unadilla.

Survivors include, his wife, Shirley of Unadilla; his daughter, Marlene Graham of Kingston; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and David Coffman of League City,  Texas; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Marcy Pickering of Greenville, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; his sister and brother-in-law, Leith and John Roberts of Buffalo; his brother, Bruce Pickering of Auburndale, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Marion Howlett of Vestal; and several nieces and nephews.

A service celebrating Mr. Pickering's life will be held Thursday, April 20, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Unadilla, with the Rev. Edwin Lintern, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Joyce Funeral Home, Inc. on Wednesday evening, April 19, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in Mr. Pickering's memory may be made to the Unadilla United Methodist Church, 73 Main St., Unadilla or the Unadilla Emergency Squad, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849.

Arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla.
