Dolly Coffee

STAMFORD — Funeral services for Dolly Coffee of Mountain Avenue, Stamford, who died Jan. 29, 2000, will be held on Friday, April 29, 2000, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, pastor, presiding. Burial will be held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Peggy J. Monser

EDMESTON — Peggy J. Monser, 41, of Pathfinder Village, Edmeston, died April 24, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 31, 1959, in Oneonta, the daughter of Jerry and Betty (Bonner) Monser.

She was a lifelong area resident and member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta.

She is survived by two sisters and their husbands, Ann and Donnie Eckler of Milford and Debbie and Jay Whithead of West Oneonta; several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins; and a special friend, Stephen Waters of Pathfinder Village.

She was predeceased by her father in 1975 and her mother in 1998.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of St. Mary's, officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening, when the family will be in attendance.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Pathfinder Village, R.R. 1, Box 32A, Edmeston, N.Y. 13335 or the Dialysis Unit at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Hanna E. Brooks

EDMESTON — Hanna E. Brooks, 86, of Edmeston, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 30, 1913, in Laurens, the daughter of Henry and Mary Ernst.

She married Harold Brooks on Aug. 20, 1932, he predeceased her on Aug. 2, 1989.

Before Hanna's retirement, she had been employed by Richers Lumber Co. in New Berlin. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston and was past matron for the Eastern Star in New Berlin.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lydia Ernst of Tamarac, Fla., numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Hanna was also predeceased by her brothers, George and William Ernst.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 27, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating.

Calling hours are one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Burlington Green Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Burlington Green Cemetery Association.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Edward F. Sackett

MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Edward F. Sackett, 84, of Southland Road, Mount Dora, Fla., died Sunday, April 23, 2000.

Mr. Sackett was retired from General Electric with 28 years of service.

He was born in Hallstead, Pa., and moved to Central Florida in 1978 from Worcester.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was an active member of the of Binghamton Lodge No. 177 F&AM, Quarter Century Club of Schenectady and Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club.

He is survived by a son, Robert Sackett of Bristol, R.I.; a stepson, Robert Klinger of Sarajevo, Bosnia; stepdaughter, Evelyn Blanton of Eustis, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marion (Walts) who died in 1947; his second wife, Marjorie (Klinger) who died in 1994; and his daughter, Cora Mae Nauert in 1998.

Services were provided by Allen J. Harden Funeral Home, 1800 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora, Fla.

Frederick Loomis

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Frederick W. Loomis, 85, of Covenant Towers, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at his home.

He was born March 19, 1915, in West Winfield, a son of the late Lebbeus and Minna E. Loomis.

He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1931. He received an AB degree from Hartwick College in 1935 and an LLB degree from the Albany Law School in 1938 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1938.

He married Marjorie Baldwin of Oneonta on June 15, 1936. She died Oct. 10, 1991.

On Sept. 12, 1993, he married Lina Mae Leigh of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and she survives him.

He practiced law at Edmeston and Morris and was formerly associated with Judge U.G. Welch and later with Attorney Richard E. Johnson, both of whom are now deceased. He was a district attorney of Otsego County from 1947-1952 and county judge and Family Court judge from 1952 to Nov. 1, 1970. In Otsego County, he was designated the Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1970.

He was past master of Farmer's Lodge No. 553 F&AM at Edmeston and district deputy grand master of the Otsego-Schoharie Masonic District. He was a former member and past president of the Edmeston Rotary Club and was an honorary member of the club at the time of his death. He was a former member and past president of the Otsego County Bar Association and was a past president of the South District Federation of Bar Association of New York State.

He was a former vice-president and member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association, a member and past president of the New York State County Judges' Association and a member of the Family Court Judges' Association.

He was president of the First National Bank of Edmeston from 1953-1972 and a director of Central National Bank of Canajoharie from 1972-1975. He was also a director and a member of the Executive Committee of the New York Central Mutual Fire Insurance Co. from 1953-1975. He was formerly a member, trustee and choir director of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston and at the time of his death was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Survivors include his wife, Lina Mae Loomis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Raymond William Loomis of Ilion; four grandchildren, Scott, David, Mark and Rochelle; three great-grandchildren, Megan, Alexandra and Anna Nichols Loomis; and a daughter-in-law, Pat Loomis.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Loomis, in 1962.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1367, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29578 or to Covenant Towers, 5001 Little River Road, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

Janette A. Smith

NORWICH — Janette A. Smith, 58, of Tanner Hill, Norwich, went peacefully to be with her Lord and savior, surrounded by family and friends at 5:50 p.m. on April 25, 2000, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born and raised in North Norwich, Janette attended Sherburne High School, graduating with the Class of 1960.

Janette was devoted to her family, truly enjoying spending time with her children and, in later years, with her grandchildren. She was as close to her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as she was to her own family.

Over the years, Janette and her husband, Dick, enjoyed traveling up and down the East Coast on their motorcycle. She was an avid camper.

Janette was a member of the Quarter Century Service Club of Norwich, Eaton Pharmaceuticals and Procter & Gamble, where she had worked for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1994 from the marketing division on Eaton Avenue.

For the past four years, Janette had been employed by the New York Central Mutual Insurance Co. in Sherburne.

Born Jan. 17, 1942, in North Norwich, Janette was the daughter of Howard T. and Doris (Steward) Park.

On Jan. 29, 1960, in the West Smyrna Baptist Church, she married Richard Smith, who survives.

Besides her husband Richard of Norwich, Janette is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Terry Ring of Safety Harbour, Fla., and Debra and Scott Grainger of New Berlin; one sister, Marie Maynard, and her husband, Walter, of North Norwich; and two brothers, Nelson Park and wife, Linda, of South New Berlin and Warren Park and wife, Patricia, of Norwich.

She is also survived by two special cousins, Patricia Maynard of Florida and Elaine Cardwell of Birmingham, Ala.; four grandchildren, Megan and Evan Grainger and Rachelle and Terrence Ring; her aunt, Frederica Steward of Norwich; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janette was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Doris Park; and her daughter, Tammy Sue Smith.

Funeral services for Janette will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Taylor, rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of New Berlin and St. Matthew's Church of South New Berlin, will officiate.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4704; or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Learbury Center, 401 North Salina St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13202-1770.

Margaret T. Salton

DOWNSVILLE — Margaret Tibitts Salton, 90, a lifelong Downsville resident, died Monday, April 24, 2000 at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi where she had been residing.

She was born June 30, 1909, in Downsville, to William J. and Helen J. (Tuttle) Tibitts.

She graduated from Downsville High School in 1927 and Oneonta Normal School in 1932.

She married Wendell P. Salton on July 4, 1933, in Clarendon (now Arlington), Va. He predeceased her in 1974.

She earned her bachelor's degree in 1955 and her master of science degree in 1956. She taught school for 46 years; 15 in rural schools and 31 years at Downsville Central School.

She was a member of the Colchester Community Church; New York State Teachers Association; National Education Association; Delaware County Teacher's Association; Delaware County Retired Citizens; Downsville Order of Eastern Star No. 279 (matron 1956); Pepacton Grange 1407 since 1935 (master 1956, 1958 and 1959); Order of the Amaranth Queen Amelia Chapter, Oneonta, and  White Shrine of Jerusalem, Cape Coral, Fla.

She is survived by a stepdaughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Darnfield of Cape Coral, Fla.; two step-grandsons, Robert Darnfield of Florida and Kevin Darnfield of Tennessee; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 28, 2000, at 10 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton. Pastor Maybelle Renzi of the Colchester Community Church will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hamden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, April 27, 2000, from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The Colchester Community Church in memory of Margaret T. Salton.

Sonja (Kitty) Ward

EAST MEREDITH — Sonja (Kitty) Ward, 73, of East Meredith died April 25, 2000, at her home.

She was born April 24, 1927, in Germany, the daughter of Karl and Friederika (Dannhorn) Briegel.

She was married to the late Robert Carl Ward in Germany Feb. 14, 1958. He died Sept. 1, 1995.

Mrs. Ward is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Liliane and Richard Briscoe of East Meredith; a grandson, Richard and his friend Tracy Finch of Hobart; a granddaughter, Christina Zale and her friend Danny of Hamden; three great-grandchildren, Thomas R. Briscoe, Jenny Lynn Ward and Tristan Ward; a sister, Olga Birkmann of Germany; a brother, Hans Briegel of Germany; and two nieces, Helen Hernandez of Bainbridge and Anita Kinle of Germany.

A housewife in her own home, she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Delhi.

Memorial services will take place on May 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. John Osterhout officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Meridale Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Howard J. Corbin

HOBART — Howard J. Corbin, 87, of Hobart, passed away April 25, 2000, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born May 23, 1912, in Hobart Township, the son of Frank and Lydia (Grant) Corbin.

He married Mabel Miller on Jan. 26, 1943, in Harpersfield. She survives as do a son and daughter-in-law, Howard F. and Nancy Corbin of Bangs,  Texas; a granddaughter, Misti Tomlinson of Blanket,  Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Helen Mott and Mary Merwin, predeceased him.

Mr. Corbin was a lifelong Hobart resident working as a dairy farmer on the Wallace Rich Farm. He was an active member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, Hobart. A quiet, honest man, Howard was a familiar face in Hobart.

Services will take place on Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Hobart United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, the family will not be in attendance. Burial will follow in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart United Methodist Church or the Hobart Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Arthur J. Goddard

COOPERSTOWN — Arthur John Goddard, 92, of Maple Street, Cooperstown, died early Thursday morning, April 27, 2000, at The Meadows.

He was born on June 25, 1907, in Long Island City, a son of Franklin Goddard and Leonore (Neilsen) Goddard Eldred.

Following the death of his father, Art's mother moved her young family to the Cooperstown area where the children grew up.

Art graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1926.

He married Ramona Gale on Oct. 4, 1931, in Stowe, Vt., at which time they purchased their home in Cooperstown where they have since resided.

Art was employed as an electrician for Halvey's Electrical Shop in Cooperstown. In 1934, he began a 34-year career as an agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., retiring in 1969.

Art became a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown in 1922, and served as an elder and trustee of the church.

He was a member, past master and trustee of Otsego Lodge No. 138 F&AM, a member of Otsego Chapter No. 26 Royal Arch Masons, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. He joined the Cooperstown Fire Department on April 15, 1927, and served as its treasurer for 17 years. As a retired life member of Company No. 1, Art was presented with a watch in 1977, in recognition of 50 years of service to the department.

He was a life member of the Cooperstown Sportsman's Association, a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown, a member and past vice president of the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery Association, and a Doubleday Dancer for 25 years. He was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and the Clothing Closet.

Art is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ramona of Cooperstown; a daughter, Sally Ann Goddard of Rouses Point; a son, John G. Goddard, and his wife, Mary Ann, of Nyack; six grandchildren and their spouses, P.J. Tetreault, Peter and Marianne Nietupski, Sally Nietupski, Cyndy and Todd Bourgeois, Ethan and Dawn Goddard and Rachel Goddard; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Nietupski and Katelyn and Andrew Bourgeois; two sisters, Ethel Smith and Leonore Robinson, both of Cooperstown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Franklin Goddard, who died in 1957, and Sidney Goddard, who died in 1955.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor, officiating. A committal service will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or to the Cooperstown Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
