Ray L. Hamilton

DELANCEY — Ray L. Hamilton, 57, of DeLancey died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a short illness.

The son of Lewis B. and Mabel E. (Hull) Hamilton, he was born June 1, 1942, in Delhi, where he grew up and was a 1961 graduate of Delaware Academy, later receiving his degree from Albany Business College.

He was an E-5 in the U.S. Army Airborne Division (1964-66), serving in the Dominican Republic. Ray subsequently served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He married Joy M. Renner on Dec. 30, 1967, in the Second Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Ray was employed at the Hamden National Bank (1966-75) where he was vice president; plant manager at Del-Met Corp., Walton, (1975-90); owner/manager of Oxbow Motors, Walton (1990-98) and subsequently a line haul truck driver for Watkins Associated Industries.

A DeLancey resident since 1974, where he was an elder and trustee in the United Presbyterian Church and leader in Boy Scout Troop #249, Ray was also a member of the Walton Lions Club, Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post #190, Delhi, the Delhi Pistol Club, the American Roller Coaster Enthusiasts and the Delhi Adult Tennis League.

Ray had a great fondness of animals all of his life.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Joy R. Hamilton; a son, Aaron L. Hamilton of Wake Forest, N.C.; a daughter, Melissa J. Hamilton of Hamden; a sister and her husband, Lois and Henry Hovemeyer of Raymond, N.H.; a niece, Adrienne Bridges; and nephew, David Hovemeyer; his father-in-law, John Renner of DeLancey; four brothers-in-law; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, May 5, at the DeLancey U.P. Church, by the pastor, the Rev. Leigh Holder-Bobo. The family will receive friends following the service. Cremation will be made through Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Brain Tumor Foundation, 414 13th St., Suite 700, Oakland, CA 94612; the DeLancey U.P. Church Basement Renovation Fund or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Joseph Lee O'Brien

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Joseph Lee (Joey) O'Brien, 20, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, April 28, 2000, at home.

He was born June 14, 1979, in Cooperstown, the son of Jane E. O'Brien.

Joey was a 1998 graduate of Cherry Valley-Springfield School and the Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Milford.

He was recently employed by the village of Cherry Valley.

Joey was a member of the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving both hunting and fishing.

Joey touched the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He was devoted to his family and a loyal and loving friend to the young and old alike. He will be missed dearly.

Joey is survived by his mother, Jane O'Brien of Cherry Valley; four aunts, Regina Miller of South Valley, Cindy O'Brien of Cherry Valley, Margie Berberick of Cherry Valley and Patricia Hannah of Vail, Ariz.; two uncles, John Rivas of Cherry Valley and Tony Rivas of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; and several cousins, great-aunts, great-uncles and his godchild, Alexis Virginia Stasilli of Cherry Valley.

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Virginia Fassett, in 1998.

Funeral services will be held on May 3, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Wilfred Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Joey's memory may be sent to the Cherry Valley Rescue Squad or the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

William H. Finch

WALTON — William H. Finch of Walton died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Delaware Valley Hospital.

He was born in Pines Brook on March 10, 1922, to Kenneth and Gladys Durfee Finch.

He married Rose A. Scofield on July 26, 1976.

Mr. Finch worked for the Dairymens League, Breakstones and the Walton Reporter, retiring in 1986.

He was a resident of Delaware County Countryside Care Center for the past three years and loved to go for Sunday rides.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; his children, Pricilla Higley, Shirley Claeys, Patricia MacRabie and Richard Finch; his brothers, Don and Paul Finch; and sisters, Beverly Curtin and Sharon Thompson. He is also survived by four stepchildren, Frank, Peter and Luci Hopps and Laura Hessinger; his stepmother, Francis Finch; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2000, 11 a.m. at the Walton Cemetery, with the Rev. Delbert Ripley, of the Northfield Community Church, officiating.

There are no prior calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner North and Delaware streets, Walton.

Alan Hegeman

CLAVERACK — Alan Hegeman, 76, of Claverack and formerly of Spencertown died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Community Hospice of Columbia Greene at Columbia Memorial Hospital Hudson following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Hegeman was born April 18, 1924, in New York City, and is the son of the late Adrian and Silvia Uhlig Hegeman.

He was educated at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Colgate University in Hamilton. He interrupted his education to join the Army Air Corps during World War II as a tail gunner. Following the war, he graduated from Brooklyn Law School.

Mr. Hegeman married his first wife of 24 years, Joan Monroe, who died in 1996. The Hegemans moved to Spencertown in 1956, and Mr. Hegeman opened a law practice in Chatham. He was employed by the New York State Attorney General's office from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement he maintained private law practices in Chatham and Berkeley,  Calif. During the 1960s Mr. Hegemen was twice elected town supervisor of the town of Austerlitz and also served as town attorney for the town of Austerlitz.

He was a member of the St. Peter's Presbyterian Church in Spencertown, where he taught Sunday School and served as deacon and elder.

On Jan. 30, 1990, Mr. Hegeman received a commendation from President George Bush, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to VISTA, or Volunteers in Service to America. He was also a member of the Chatham Lions Club and the Bar Association of Columbia County.

Mr. Hegeman is survived by his second wife, to whom he was married in 1995, Harriet (Ball) Hegeman of Claverack; five children, Thomas Hegeman and wife, Marie of Oneonta, Clinton Hegeman and wife, Laura of Glenmont, Daniel Hegeman and wife, Sara Lou O'Connor of Los Angeles, Benjamin Hegeman of San Francisco, and daughter, Rachel Hegeman and Donald Waldron; one stepdaughter, Amy Kline Cornell and husband, Christopher Cornell; and sister, Ruth Miner of Santa Rosa,  Calif.; three stepgrandchildren, Alisha  Taylor of Noti, Ore., Mary and Daniel Cornell, both of Hudson; nephew, David Miner of California; and two cousins, Frank and  Johnson Uhlig of Poughkeepsie.

Memorial services will be held Friday, May 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. from the St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, Spencertown, with the Rev. George H. McDonald and Cathy Johanson-Light officiating. Inurnment of the ashes will be buried at the Hegeman home in Spencertown, built by his parents in 1930s.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, Spencertown, N.Y 12165, or Alzheimer's Foundation, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206 or Community Hospice of Columbia Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, N.Y. 12414.

Arrangements are with the Wenk Funeral Home, Chatham.

Sarah M. Rubyor

MARYLAND — Sarah M. Rubyor, 84, of Silliman Cove, Maryland, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 29, 2000, at her home.

She was born March 14, 1916, in Delhi, the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah I. Russell Gemmel.

She was predeceased by her husband, William "Paul" Rubyor, in 1979, two brothers, Robert and Gerald Gemmel, and two sisters, Marion Gemmel Goss and Jean Gemmel Davidson.

She is survived by four godchildren, Rodger Goss of Easthampton, Conn., Mrs. John (Regina "Susan") Miller of Wells Bridge, Mrs. Brian (Julia) Mitchell of Indiana, and Mrs. James (Patricia) Bathen of Florida; five sisters, Beatrice "Betty" Gemmel Starker of Oneonta, Louise Moe Gemmel Sitts of Laurens, Madeline "Terry" Gemmel of Delhi, Marjorie Gemmel  Johnson of Northvale, N.J., and Katherine Knapp of Port Richey, Fla.; four brothers, H. Russell Gemmel of Maryland, Donald Gemmel of Wyoming, John Gemmel of Zephryhills, Fla., and Francis Gemmel of New Berlin; and a special niece and her husband, Mrs. David (Rebecca) Welsh of Cooperstown.

Mrs. Rubyor was a lifetime resident of the area, and attended St. Christina's Episcopal School in Cooperstown.

She was employed with Lederle Laboratory in Pearl River for 30 yeas until her retirement in 1971. She also worked with Larenzo's Motel in Colliersville for 18 years as a motel clerk.

She attended Lake Delaware Episcopal Church and was a member of the Lederle Club of Lederle Labs.

Graveside services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Frank Crenshaw officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Lake Delaware Episcopal Church in her memory.

Ruth Huggins

PRATTSVILLE — Ruth Huggins, 77, of Prattsville, died on Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Oneonta.

Mrs. Huggins was born on March 10, 1923, in East  Jefferson, to Harry and Emily (nee Rettig) Horton.

She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Sr. on Oct. 10, 1957.

She is survived by her children, Linda Morris of Stanford, Kathleen Hartzel of Prattsville, Christina Butler of Phoenix, Ariz., Theodore M. Jr. of Roxbury, Alan of Prattsville, Emily Morse of Prattsville; and surrogate daughter, Donna Bennett of Prattsville. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at Decker Funeral Home, Windham, on Tuesday, May 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the Prattsville Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 3, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Ellen Oliveto officiating. Interment to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions made to the Prattsville Rescue Squad, American Cancer Society or the A.O. Fox Hospital in her memory would be greatly appreciated.

Jeanne M. Staruck

SCHENEVUS — Jeanne M. Staruck, 82, of Schenevus died Saturday, April, 29, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 10, 1917, in Oneonta, the daughter of Guy and Florence (Crandall) Merrill.

She married Leo J. Staruck, Feb. 6, 1938. He died July 10, 1968.

Jeanne was at one time employed by the Wheeler Pharmacy in Schenevus, and by Dr. Joseph in Oneonta. She and her husband co-owned and ran the Schenevus Video for several years. Recently she worked with the Otsego County Patrons Cooperative Insurance as a secretary and was presently serving on the Board of Directors. Jeanne also served on the Town of Maryland Board of Elections for many years.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus, past member of the C.H. Graham Hose Co. Auxiliary, Schenevus, and a charter member of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752 Auxiliary.

Jeanne especially enjoyed gardening.

Jeanne is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Judith Staruck of Schenevus, David and Helen Staruck of Schenevus, and Tom and Mary Hynes of Roxbury; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; a brother, Kendall and his wife, Patricia Owens of Enfield Conn.; sisters-in-law, Stella Mills of Lake Worth, Fla. and Alice Staruck of Unadilla; a special cousin, Sondra Morrano of Fulton; cousin, Veron Vincent of Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by a sister, Dawn Temple.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester.

Calling hours are Tuesday, May 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. A vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Jeanne M. Staruck may be made to the VFW Post 2752, Main Street, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Ronald J. Kelsey

SIDNEY — Ronald J. Kelsey, 77, of Sidney passed away Saturday, April 29, 2000, at home.

He was born March 1, 1923, in Walton, to the late Walter E. and Elmyra Lily Kelsey.

Ron served his country in the United States Army in an antitank company during World War II.

He married Dorothy Scott on April 25, 1946, in Walton.

Ron was a tool designer for E.C.D. of Bendix when he retired in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Sidney; his daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Robert Dalton of Sidney; two godsons, Niels Gloeckler of Illinois and Alex Gloeckler of Sidney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ron is predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Elmina G. Hughes

DOWLING PARK, Fla. — Elmina Marie Gardner Hughes, 88, of Dowling Park, Fla., died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Dowling Park, Fla.

She was the wife of Carl Hughes.

Elmina was born in Danbury, Conn., on Feb. 5, 1912, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Loretta Wilkes Gardner.

She lived in Danbury most of her life before moving to Unadilla in 1963, and then to Live Oak, Fla., in 1989.

She worked at Amphenol Borg in Danbury in the Machine Department for a few years.

She was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Dowling Park, Fla., and was a former member of the Advent Christian Church in Danbury.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one nephew; a niece, Shirley Shanko Tucker of N. Richmond Hills,  Texas; two great-nieces; four great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and nephews; two great-great-great-nieces; one great-great-great-nephew; and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, Section Four, at 2 p.m. today

There are no calling hours.

Hull Funeral Service, 60 Division St., Danbury, is handling arrangements.

Richard B. Roberts

ONEONTA — Richard B. Roberts, 69, of the Highgate Manor Nursing Facility and formerly of Ocala, Fla., and Holland Patent died Friday, April 28, 2000, after a lengthy illness.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of George and Helene (Bowen) Roberts.

In 1953, he married Nancy Conover, who preceded him in death in 1998.

Mr. Roberts graduated from Oneonta State University in 1958, and went on to receive a master's degree in education from Oneonta State in 1962.

He worked as a teacher and administrator for more than 30 years, having acted as an elementary principal and principal of special services in the Holland Patent School System from 1964 until his retirement in 1987.

He is survived by his two sons, Rick Roberts of Gansevoort and Brian Roberts of Lenexa, Kan.; four grandchildren, Ashley, Lauren, Lindsay, and Aaron Roberts; one sister, Mrs. William (Joyce) Atchinson of Oneonta; a sister-in-law, Claire Burns of Clinton; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home prior to and at the conclusion of the memorial service.
