Mary A. “Sally” Reome passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007 at her residence, 2562 Kerr St., Mooresville, N.C. 28115. Born Feb. 14, 1922 in Saranac Lake, she was the daughter of Herman Rice and Eva Lawless Rice. She lived in Saranac Lake for almost 75 years. She married Lester E. Reome at St. Bernard’s Church in 1939. She worked for many years at Meyers Drugstore lunch counter with her friends Maggie Ellithorpe and Charley Darrah. They were known around town as “The Three Musketeers.” She also worked at DJ’s Rustic Restaurant as a waitress for her close friend Shirley Durfee. She was a lifelong member of the Veteran of Foreign War’s Women’s Auxiliary of Saranac Lake. Sally never met a stranger. She was well loved and respected by all who knew her and always considered Saranac Lake her home. She is survived by her children: Mona Rivers, Jane Reome, Edward Reome of Rochester, Lester “Butch” and Joyce Reome of Lake Clear, Gary and AnnMarie Reome of Brasher Falls, Pamela Fobare and Mary “Teri” Reome Kenny of Mooresville, N.C., Michael and Penny Moody of Rochester, Robert Reome of Smethport, Penn., and Mark and Lisa Moody of Montpelier, Vt.; 35 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester; two sons: Jimmy Reome and John Reome; a brother, Gerald Rice; and a sister, Jane Rice. Anyone wishing to remember Sally may make a donation to the Cancer Society in memory of her late husband Lester and beloved daughter-in-law Debbie Reome. There will be a memorial service in the spring at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

Mary E. Stunzi, 91, of 20 Seneca Ave., Saranac Lake, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 at Plano Medical Center in Plano,  Texas. Born Jan. 11, 1916 in Lyon Mountain, she was the daughter of Alexander and Melvina (Cheska) Kourofsky. She married August “Gus” Stunzi on May 24, 1936 at St. Bernard’s Church in Lyon Mountain. Mrs. Stunzi grew up in Lyon Mountain where she attended school and graduated from Lyon Mountain High School. Mrs. Stunzi moved to Saranac Lake following graduation from high school. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 787 at St. Bernard’s Church. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. She is survived by six children: Francis Stunzi of Rouses Point, Albert Stunzi of Saranac Lake, Mary Anne Bott of Frisco,  Texas, Elizabeth  Jones of Bloomingdale, Peter Stunzi of Glen Mills, Pa., and Joseph Stunzi of Athens, Ga; four brothers: Alexander Kourofsky of Lyon Mountain, John Kourofsky of Dannemora, Walter Kourofsky of Lyon Mountain, and Francis Kourofsky of Silver Bay, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her husband on Aug. 3, 1990. Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 1 and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 2 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake in May. Friends wishing to remember Mary E. Barbara Ann Gragg, 73, died on Feb. 18, 2007 in Plattsburgh. Born June 14, 1933 in Seattle, Wash., she was the daughter of Loren and Elizabeth (Smith) Stone. Barbara married James Gragg of Watertown in the fall of 1959 and has since lived in upstate New York. She has been a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 30 years. Barbara was very active in volunteering her time to many local organizations including the Adirondack Medical Center Gift Shop, Adirondack Medical Center Auxiliary, Saranac Lake Free Library, The Readers, the ALPO Dog Sled Races, the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, the American Cancer Society, the Saranac Lake Village Improvement Society and the Historical Society. While Barbara was originally from the Northwest, she loved this area and her home was definitely in Saranac Lake with her many friends. She is survived by her two brothers: Loren Stone and his wife Sharon and Terry Stone and his wife Jeri of Olympia, Wash.; and four nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband. There will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Betty Ann Coats, age 70, of 72 Prospect Ave., Bloomingdale, NY died Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at her home. Born in Lake Placid, New York on November 21, 1936, she was the daughter of Roland and Elizabeth (Klien) Douglas. She married Owen Philip Coats on September 21, 1952 at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake, New York. During her husband’s military career she traveled extensively, living in Germany, France and Alaska as well as many other posts in the United States. Betty made a home wherever they were. She taught catechism in France, Germany, Alaska and Saranac Lake. She was a member of Our Lady of Snows Society in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Saranac Lake V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. Following her husband's military retirement she worked at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake until her retirement in 1998. She is survived by her Husband Owen Philip Coats of Bloomingdale, NY; three son, Roland P. Coats and his wife Mary of Henderson, NC, Daniel A. Coats and his wife Delayne of Albion, NY, and Robert P. Coats and his wife Blake of Naples, NY; three sisters Helen Macy and her husband Raymond of Bloomingdale, NY; Alice Borquin of Saranac Lake, NY, and Mary B. Johns of Rensselear Falls, NY, seven grandchildren Melanie Coats of Broad Brook, CT, Tiffany, Benjamin, & Molly Coats all of Albion, NY; Phoebe, Julia and Isabella Coats of Naples, NY; two great grandsons Andre and Alex of Broad Brook, CT, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, mother, stepfather Joseph Marconi, and two brothers Louis and Joseph Marconi. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Sunday, February 25, 2007 from 2PM -4PM and 7PM - 9PM. A bible vigil service will take place on Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday February 26, 2007 at St. Bernard's Church. with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will be in North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid in May. Percy S. Lavigne died February 17 in Florida. He was 94 years old. Survivors include one son Robert Lavigne and his wife Carol of Vermontville; two granddaughters, Bobbie Lavigne and Hollie Whittaker and Hollie’s husband Robert; and one great-granddaughter Alexis of Deland Florida. There are no services.

Sally Chatzky, 69, of Newcomb, succumbed after a long illness with never a complaint, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. She was a source of strength and comfort for those who she left behind. Born in Feb. 16, 1937 in Binghamton, she was the daughter of Melvin G. and Agnes C. (McKinney) Rush. She was the wife of Herbert Chatzky of Newcomb. Mrs. Chatzky received her bachelors degree in education and worked as a teacher in Prince George County, Md. She was a member of the Long Lake Library, the Long Lake Discussion Group, and served on the board of the Lake Placid Synagogue. She also sang for many years at Second Congregation Church, Manchester, Conn., North United Methodist Church, Manchester, Conn. and the Temple B’nai Israel, in New Britian, Conn. She sang in the professional Choir at Beth Israel, West Hartford, Conn. and sang at Carnegie Hall as a member of the Hartford Symphony Chorale. Mrs. Chatzky is survived by her husband; two sons: Paul Selby and David Ben Chatzky; two daughters: Christine Selby Snow and Lisa Chatzy O’Brien; one brother: John Rush; four grandchildren: Danielle Tetro, Jordon Tetro, Seth Tetro and Samantha O’Brien. She was predeceased by her parents and her first husband, Roger Selby. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 at the United Hebrew Community Cemetery in Lake Placid. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Newcomb Fire Hall in Newcomb. Rabbi Alec Friedmann will officiate. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests donations in memory of Mrs. Chatzky be made to Adopt-A-Dog, Inc. 849 Lake Ave., Greenwich, Conn. O6831, the Lake Placid Synagogue, The Newcomb United Methodist Church or the Long Lake Library.

Robert N. Curtis Jr., 57, of Saranac Lake, formerly of the Potsdam Canton area, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007 at his home. He was born in in 1949 Watertown. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War where he became disabled. Robert pursued an associates degree in human resources and became adept at carpentry work. He then moved to the Potsdam Canton area in the mid-1990s where he attended SUNY Potsdam pursuing a degree in psychology. Mr. Curtis moved to Saranac Lake in 2003 and became a very strong leader in the Alcoholics Anonymous program, and served as a speaker numerous times, inspiring and sponsoring many in the program. His devotion to and belief in the program made a deep impact in peoples’ lives. He was an avid reader and enjoyed creating intricate jewelry, which he shared with others as a way of expressing his appreciation for people. Robert was an excellent speaker and loved to hold deep intellectual conversations with many others. Proud of his Native American heritage, he embraced their ways. Bob is survived by his fiance Marlene Allen, also of Saranac Lake, and many close friends, all of whom will miss him dearly. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, February 19 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. with Ken Davis officiating. Eva F. Sheffield, 79, of McKinley Street in Lake Placid died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007 under the loving care of her family and High Peaks Hospice. Born Nov. 21, 1927, in Belmont, she was the daugher of Owen and Myra (Secour) Peryea. She was the wife of Francis P. “Cowboy” Sheffield. Mrs. Sheffield was a graduate of Lake Placid High School and had worked at Placid Memorial Hospital as a nurses aide and ward clerk for 20 years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Tom Dooley, the Lake Placid American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Lake Placid VFW, St. Agnes Catholic Church Choir and she had been a judge for the go-cart races held in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Westport. She is survived by her husband; six daughters: Carol Koller of Lake Placid, Yvonne Sheffield of Saranac Lake, Patia Henry of Albany, Lynn Martin of Saranac Lake, Pamela Hoover and her husband Jerry of Vadnais Heights, Minn. and Mary Coyne and her husband Mark of Jonesboro, Ga.; two sons: Tacoma “Tony” Sheffield and his wife Tracy of Lake Placid, and David Sheffield of Lake Placid; one sister: Joyce Grattan of Schenectady; two brother-in-laws; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two aunts; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons: Francis B. Sheffield and George J. Sheffield and two sisters: Norma Campbell and Ruth Benware. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. An American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home followed by a Bible vigil service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Rev. Patrick O’Reilly will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in May. Donations in her memory may be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department or High Peaks Hospice.

Dr. Clayton M. Steward, 95, a state district health officer in Saranac Lake from 1948 to 1972, died on Feb. 15, 2007 at his home on Kiwassa Lake Road where he and his wife had made their residence for many years. Born on July 25, 1911 in Norwich, NY, he was the son of Milton and Mertie (Frink) Steward. He attended Norwich schools and graduated from Bucknell University in 1935. He received his doctor of medicine in 1939 from Syracuse University. After a two-year internship at Fordham Hospital in New York City, he entered the United States Army, serving for three years as a battalion surgeon of the 753rd Tank Battalion in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. After returning from military service, he joined the New York State Department of Health, taking post graduate work at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. He was named assistant director of health in Binghamton, serving in that position for seven months. He was then assigned to the Saranac Lake District as district health officer providing health services to Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and St. Lawrence counties. Dr. Steward is survived by his nephew David E. Steward and his wife Joyce of Sherburne; great nephew: Brian D. Steward and his wife Ellen and their children Athena and Marion of Denver,  Colo.; a great niece Kelly S. Steward of Vestal; great nephews: Mark Steward, and Kenneth and his wife Stephanie Steward, Keith and his wife Roberta Steward all of Riverside,  Calif.; Gregg and his wife Bobbie Steward of San Clemente,  Calif.: and great-niece Laurie and her husband Tim Cypher of Concord,  Calif. He was predeceased by his wife, Dr. Dorothy Stevens Steward. in 1997; a brother Wesley D. Steward in 1982; a nephew Lawrence Steward; and a great nephew Eric M. Steward. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will be held at a later date with his long time friend and Pastor, Fr. Alexander Stringer of Wells, Vermont officiating. Private interment services will take place in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Norwich, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or the Saranac Lake Free Library in care of the funeral home.

Carol A. LaBrake, 61, of Pittsfield, Mass., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007. Born May 30,1945 in Saranac Lake, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Barbara (Bryant) LaBrake. She is survived by two daughters: Jodi and Amy; two grandchildren: Joshua and Misty, all of Pittsfield; two sisters: Mary LaBrake of Vermontville and Betty Callaghan of California; a brother William of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place in the spring and burial will be in Union Cemetery in Vermontville. Local arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. In lieu of flowers friends are encouraged to call a loved one.

Richard Bonk, 76, of Saranac Village at Will Rogers in Saranac Lake, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. Born Dec. 18, 1930 in College Point, Queens, he was the son of Peter and Cecelia (Zeber) Bonk. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Mr. Bonk had been employed in the mail room at the Elmira Correctional Facility. An avid hiker, Mr. Bonk was a member of the 46’ers Club and the AMC 4,000 footers. His hobbies included crafts, photography, hiking, computers and baking. He loved animals, especially his dog Marino. He is survived by two sisters: Sophie Ferral of West Haverstown and Rosemarie Hal of Lyle; two brothers: Peter Bonk of Lagrangeville and William Bonk of Kamulla, Hawaii; and several close friends including Bonnie Webb and family of Vermontville. He was predeceased by his parents. Calling hours will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Torin Robert Colby, born Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, passed away the same day. In loving memory of a beautiful baby boy brought into our lives and taken away so soon. Even though you were not here for long you touched more lives that you will ever know. You will always be in our hearts and will never be forgotten. We love you son. Love, mom and dad. Torin is survived by his parents: Sierra Brewster and Robert Colby; his grandparents: Stephen and Leslie Brewster and Robert Colby and his girlfriend Tami Rodriguez, and Victoria Colby and her boyfriend Christopher Barney; three aunts: Cortlynn Brewster and Rachael and Kailani Colby; his great-grandparents: Patricia Brewster, Franklin Loving and his wife Ann, Beatrice Colby and Theressa Hough; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home with the Rev. Victor R. Lamora, 90, of 128 Main St. Tupper Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born June 2, 1916 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Fred and Emma (Grenier) Lamora. He attended Tupper Lake schools and worked for the Franklin Dairy in Faust as a young man. On April 23, 1942, he and Genevieve  Woods were married by the Rev. Ignatius Loyola McDonough at Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. During World War II, he served in the Army, in the European Theater as a Master Srgt. in the 9th Chemical Depot Company from April 1942 to November 1945. He was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 220 and a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 3120. Following his return to civilian life, Victor worked for the village of Tupper Lake and later as a plumber for the Sunmount VA and Sunmount D.D.S.O. before retiring in 1978. Beginning in 1968, Mr. Lamora served several terms as town councilman until 1986. His re-election bid had resulted in a tie, the outcome of which was decided by the flip of a coin that did not land in his favor. He was a member of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Hose Company 3. As a lifetime member of the Holy Name Parish, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, the parish council and served as parish trustee for many years. He is survived by one sister, Shirley Dubey of Cocoa, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Loyola Thornton of Tupper Lake; two brothers-in-law: Robert L.  Woods of Tupper Lake and William H.  Woods of Liverpool; and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years on Aug. 19, 1996; a sister Lillian Bourbeau; and three brothers: Clarence, Alton and Leonard Lamora. Calling hours will held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday January 29 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. Burial with full military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider High Peaks Hospice or the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks.

George Fortune Jones, 59, of Parkside Dr., Lake Placid, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Born Jan. 18, 1948 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of David W. and Kathryn (Fortune) Jones. George was a graduate of Lake Placid High School Class of 1967 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Plattsburgh State University. George served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and became disabled shortly after his discharge. He then joined and was a very active member of the American Legion Post 326 in Lake Placid, and served as post commander and Essex County commander. George also volunteered countless hours at Uihlein Mercy Center and was a founding member of the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service. George’s generous heart, warm smile and dry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.He is survived by a brother, David W.  Jones and his wife Linda; four sisters: Margaret “Peggy” Jones, Barbara J. Benware, Kathryn O’Connor and her husband Richard, all of Lake Placid, and Maura McQuillan and her husband Tim of Hanover, N.H.; three nieces: Olivia Benware, Genevieve Benware and Kathryn “Kitty” Jones-McQuillan; and a nephew David W.  Jones III. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. An American Legion prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Arthur F. Latourelle, 78, of Lake Placid, died in the early morning hours Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007 after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 13, 1928 in Keeseville, he was the son of Arthur and Grace (Smith) Latourelle. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 26 years, retiring in 1983. More recently he received his 10-year service pin as an on-call driver for the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War, stationed in Germany. Arthur was a member of the American Legion Post No. 326 in Lake Placid for 39 years, the Pee Wee Association, the Boy Scouts of American Troop 10, the Skating Club of Lake Placid and many other organizations. During the 1980 Winter Olympics, he worked as a statistician for the hockey games, including the “Miracle on Ice” game. He was honored to be chosen as an official starter for the biathlon ski races at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He enjoyed camping and last winter was a camp host at St. Joseph’s Peninsula on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Most importantly, he was a great husband, father and grandfather and will be missed dearly by all that knew him. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Dawn (McNierney) Latourelle; five sons: Daniel and his wife Maryann (Daby) and their twin daughters, Kaitlyn and Nicole of Pensacola, Fla., John and his wife Rebecca (Marvin) and their two children, Brianna and Brandon of Pensacola, Fla., Alan and his wife JoAnn (Naegele) and their daughter Jaclyn of Saranac Lake, Paul and his wife Dianna (Blinn) and their two children Matthew and Kristen of Clermont, Fla. and Tim McNierney and his son Shane of Lake Placid; two daughters: Lisa Latourelle-Fitzgerald of Lake Placid and Kelly McNierney of Watertown; a brother, Francis “Duke” E. Latourelle and his wife Patricia of Keeseville and Clermont, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Howard Thompson of Champlain; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, and a sister, Leona Thompson. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid.
