Robert Huntington

WESTFORD — Robert L. Huntington Sr., 73, of Westford, died unexpectedly Friday, May 5, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Oneonta, the son of Lowell and Meta (Juergensen) Huntington.

He married Jane Gaylord in 1946, in Oneonta.

Mr. Huntington was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II as a gunner.

He was a lifelong area resident.

He owned and operated the family dairy farm, Lomet Meadows, in Westford, which was established by his father in 1924. For the past five years, he was a playground aide at the Schenevus Central School.

Mr. Huntington was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Westford, Westford Fire Department, the fire commissioners, Westford Historical Society, Westford Historian, a Scoutmaster, was on the Schenevus School Board, Westford Town Board and was a local justice of the peace. He was also very active in many farm associations.

Mr. Huntington is survived by his wife, Jane, of Westford; a son, Robert Jr., and wife, Kelda, of Westford; three daughters, Mary and husband, Caron Casteel, of Lincoln, Neb., Barbara and husband, James Massucci, of Craftsbury, Vt. and Diane and Randal Barbera of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; and three brothers, Pete Huntington of Cooperstown, Ted Huntington of Glens Falls and Don Huntington of Cooperstown. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and play ground companions.

He was predeceased by two daughters, Amy and JoAnn; and his brothers, Jim and Dave.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, county Highway 34, Westford, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Westford Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Huntington to the St. Timothy's Building Fund, in care of Janet Mathews, P.O. Box 74, Westford, N.Y. 13488.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Fred Wickwire

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Fred (Louie) Wickwire, 64, passed away Friday, May 5, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born July 14, 1935, in Cooperstown, the son of Spencer and Marguerite (Warren) Wickwire.

On Nov. 28, 1958, he married Margaret Eckler; she survives.

He served in the United States Navy.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #7128, Thursday Night Golf League and Cooperstown American Legion Post.

Mr. Wickwire had worked for the National Security Agency at Fort George Meade in Maryland, the Agway Corp., and for the past 20 years at the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement recently.

He was an avid New York Yankees fan, enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was devoted to his family and loved them very much.

Besides his wife of 41 years, Margaret E. Wickwire of Cherry Valley, he is survived by two daughters, Michelle R. Wickwire of Cherry Valley and Maureen L. Wickwire of Albany; a son, Mickey C. Wickwire and his wife, Mary, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one granddaughter, Megan F. Wickwire of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Beverly and her husband, Robert McCaffery, of Windsor and Carolanne (Bunny) Snyder of Cooper City, Fla.; a brother, Warren and his wife, Joanne Wickwire, of Gillette, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

There will be no public calling hours.

Contributions in Mr. Wickwire's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, Middlefield First Responders or the American Heart Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary Powell Ross

ONEONTA — Mary Magdalen Powell Ross, 94, went home with her Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 7, 2000, after a long illness.

Mary was born in Oneonta on March 23, 1906, to Consiglia and Angelo Powell.

On June 22, 1941, she married Joseph Ross at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta.

Mary attended Center Street School and Oneonta High School. After graduation, she worked as a medical secretary/receptionist at the Physicians' Building for the Doctors Marshall, Latcher, Carson, Getman and Hall. She also served as translator for the Italian patients. She was medical and personal secretary to Dr. Alexander Carson during his medical and political career. She also worked briefly for Dr. Douglas Rowley.

Mary was devoted to her family and to her church. Since 1978, she has been a sponsor for children in the Philippines.

Mary is survived by her husband, Joe; her daughter, Mary-Anne; and her sister, Sister Rose Powell, RSM of Guilderland; and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Joseph Jr.; and her brothers, Pat and Fred.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco presiding.

Friends may call on Monday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mary's Church to help people in need or to the St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bessie Leona Cobb

MORRIS — Bessie Leona Cobb, 77, of Morris, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at her residence where she was also born and married.

She was born on Aug. 27, 1922, daughter of Harold and Eleanor (Allen) Sargent.

She married Frank R. Cobb on Aug. 31, 1940. Frank died April 4, 2000.

She was a lifelong resident of the Butternut Valley and a 1940 graduate of Morris Central School and was valedictorian of her class.

She was a member of the Morris Baptist Church, where she had served as treasurer and Sunday school teacher for several years.

Bessie is survived by her son, Brent Cobb, and his wife, Joan, of Morris; her grandchildren, John Cobb and his wife, Ellen, of Morris, Frank Cobb and his wife, Tracy, of Oneonta; her greatgrandchildren, Tara, Latisha and Gavin Cobb; four nephews, Douglas, Ronald, Marvin and Larry Sargent; and a niece, Olive Lubier.

A brother, William Sargent; and a niece, Jacqueline Fake, predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at the Morris Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating. Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory and interment of the cremains will be private in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Morris Baptist Church in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Martha E. Kennedy

RISING SUN, Md. — Martha Elizabeth Kennedy, 92, of Rising Sun, Md., died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Calvert Manor Nursing Home in Rising Sun, Md.

Mrs. Kennedy was a homemaker and member of the State Line Baptist Church in Nottingham, Pa.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ruffin L. Kennedy, who died in 1972; and one son, Walter L. Kennedy, who died in 1994.

Martha is survived by two sons, Earl L. Kennedy of Pinole,  Calif., and Donald R. Kennedy of Rising Sun Md.; five daughters, Norma Eller, Ruby Roop and Ruth Burton, all of Rising Sun., Md., and Doris Ann Barker of Nottingham, Pa. and Fay Meadows-Howe of Otego, N.Y. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, Md., where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be held in the Rosebank Cemetery, Calvert, Md.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

John (Wes) Seward

MARYLAND — John (Wes) Seward, 82, of RD Maryland, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born July 4, 1917, in the town of Butternuts, the son of John S. and Edith E. (Utter) Seward.

He married Vivian Odell on June 25, 1938, in Oneonta. Mrs. Seward died Jan. 14, 1998.

Mr. Seward was a lifelong area resident. After retiring from the Milford Town Highway Department, Mr. Seward owned and operated the Seward Poultry farm. In his earlier years he was employed at Scintilla, Corning Glass, Sheffields Chemical as well as the Oneonta school district.

After his retirement he enjoyed cultivating and farming blueberries.

Mr. Seward was a certified town of Milford assessor and was a member of the Oneonta Senior Citizens, the Schenevus Masonic Lodge and the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school superintendent. He also taught adult classes and was a lay leader, chairman of the Administrative Council, a trustee, sexton and sang in the choir. He was also active in the men's club of the church.

Mr. Seward is survived by four children, Marjorie Hill of Wolcott, John and his wife, Hortencia Seward, of Cerritos,  Calif., Leona and her husband, Robert Hoag, of Maryland, and James and his wife, Cynthia Seward, of Milford; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dora Fowler of Grand Gorge and Catherine Van Woert of Milford; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery. Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, after 3 p.m., Tuesday; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday evening.

Those who wish may make contributions to either the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, care of Edna Schaffer, 42 Morgan Ave., Oneonta, or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Robert E. Kells

PARSONSBURG, Md. — Robert Edward Kells, 83, of Parsonsburg, Md., died Sunday, May 7, 2000.

Born in Brooklyn on Jan. 1, 1917, he was the son of the late Edward W. Kells and the former Clara A. Andrews, also deceased.

He was a graduate of the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School in Brooklyn and the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

Mr. Kells worked as an assistant decorator for B. Altman & Co., specializing in home and commercial decorating, from 1940 to 1942.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II, after which he returned to B. Altman & Co. in 1946, and was promoted to senior decorator in 1947.

Notable achievements include decorating Gracie Mansion in New York City, the office of the president of the United States and the  White House's Green Room, and the National Art Gallery in  Washington, D.C. From 1950 to 1973, he was the owner and proprietor of Kellwood Studio in Huntington, where he specialized in interior design and early American Antiques. Following retirement in 1973, he lived in Huntington and Delhi and Parsonsburg, Md.

Mr. Kells is survived by his wife of 46 years, Alice L. Kells; two sons, Robert E. Kells Jr. of Waldorf, Md., and David A. Kells of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Sarah M. Kells and Andrew E. Kells of Waldorf, and Natalie R. Kells of Reynoldsburg.

A burial service will be conducted by his sons at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth, Queens County, at 1 p.m. on May 11.

Madeline Nichols

WALTON — Madeline Nichols, 85, of East Brook Road, Walton, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been residing.

She was a lifelong Walton resident, born July 17, 1914, to Vern E. and Grace (Jones) Davis.

She was married to Clarence Nichols, who predeceased her in 1972. Clarence and Madeline Nichols had owned and operated Clarmax Farms on East Brook Road, Walton, and she was a member of the Christ Church, Walton.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Clarice and Ernest Valentine of Delhi; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Nichols; grandchildren, Ernest Valentine Jr., Deborah Bolles, Phyllis Valentine-Rash and Valerie Valentine; a stepgranddaughter, Stacy Hyduk; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Nichols; a son, Maxwell Nichols; a sister, Juanita Montgomery; and a brother, Louis Davis.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Walton Cemetery, with the Rev. Shaw Mudge, pastor of Christ Church, Walton, officiating.

There are no prior calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walton Emergency Squad, care of Grace Cornell, 61 West St., Walton, N.Y. 13856.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Chapel, corner North and Delaware streets, Walton.

Edward Luczynski

FRANKLIN — Mr. Edward Luczynski, of 341 Heathen Hill Road, Franklin, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Luczynski was born Sept. 4, 1944, in New York, N.Y., the son of Edward and Ann (Daniels) Luczynski.

He was deputy commissioner for the Department of Transportation in New York City.

He resided in both Staten Island and Franklin.

Mr. Luczynski is survived by his mother, Ann Luczynski of Franklin; two uncles, Tom Luczynski of Madison, Ohio, and Walter Luczynski of Greensboro, N.C.; and two aunts, Edna Michalski of Holyoke, Mass., and Bernice Isenhart of Pittsfield, Mass.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, May 11, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. on Wednesday evening, May 10, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will take place in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, Mass.

Contributions in Mr. Luczynski's memory may be made to the Franklin Fire Department, 69 Main St., Franklin, N.Y. 13775.

Arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla.

Christina Hollister

OTEGO — Christina M. Hollister, 82, of 372 state Highway 5, Otego, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Cortland Memorial Hospital, Cortland.

She was born June 13, 1917, in Monroe, Pa., the daughter of the late Martin and Cora Hoffman Wheeler.

On Aug. 11, 1940, she married Warren H. Hollister, and a short time later relocated to Otego where they operated a family farm for many years.

Surviving are two daughters, Reva (Donald) Mroz of Harrison, Tenn., and Rosemary (Fred) Hughes of Tully; and two brothers, Joseph (Dorothy) Williams and Martin Williams. Also surviving are five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Warren H. in 1997; and by a brother, Cortez Williams.

Services will he private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Hollister's name may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4797.

Irene Waterman

DELHI — Irene Waterman, 89, of Delhi, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care in Delhi.

She was born Sept. 10, 1910, in New York City, the daughter of Nills and Petra (Neilson) Thorsland.

She was married to the late Herbert Waterman.

Three sons, Herbert Waterman Jr. of N. Collins, Karl Waterman of Stuart, Fla., and Donald Waterman of Florida; a daughter, Doris Cornell of Fishs Eddy; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews survive.

Mrs. Waterman was a teacher and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in North Franklin. She had resided at Cottage Adult Home in Treadwell until moving to Delaware County Countryside Care in February of this year.

Graveside services will take place at the convenience of the family at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
