AFTON — Iva H. Montgomery, 90, of Afton, formerly of Terrace Heights, New Berlin, died Dec. 31, 1999, in Afton.

She was born April 15, 1909, in Pittsfield.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 11, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Interment will be in the Windfall Cemetery, Granton, Wis.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Arrangements are by Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Robert Wiles Cook

COOPERSTOWN — Friends and associates of Robert Wiles Cook, 87, formerly of Brookwood Estate on Otsego Lake, who died on Nov. 25, 1999, are invited to gather for his burial at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2000, in the Cook family plot in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown. The Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus of Christ Church, Cooperstown, will offer prayers of committal.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Pauline R. Wyckoff

ONEONTA — Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline R. Mondillo Wyckoff will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at 11 a.m., at the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Flowers would be appreciated. Donations may also be made to the River Street Baptist Church, 133 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Virginia S. Hicks

MILFORD — A graveside service for Mrs. Virginia S. Hicks, who died Jan. 4, 2000, will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Milford Cemetery, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Milford, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Minnie Irons Mead

HARTWICK — A graveside service for Minnie Irons Mead, who died on Feb. 16, 2000, will be held on Friday, May 12, 2000, in Hartwick Cemetery at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Henry Joseph Nicols

COOPERSTOWN — Henry Joseph Nicols, 26, of Cooperstown, died Monday afternoon, May 8, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, of injuries sustained in a car accident.

He was born on Aug. 9, 1973, in Monticello, the son of Henry J. and Joan (O'Donnell) Nicols.

Henry was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church at the Onteora Scout Reservation in Livingston Manor, and was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Henry graduated from Cooperstown Central School in 1991, and achieved international fame when he began an AIDS education program as a part of his Eagle Scout Project.

He and his family have traveled around the world speaking about AIDS and the need for compassion for those living with the virus. During his talks, Henry frequently used the Otsego County and Cooperstown communities as examples of the power of love, support and compassion.

In 1993, he was awarded the first honorary bachelor's degree to ever be given by the University of Scranton.

Henry was born with hemophilia and received more than 500 blood transfusions during his life. He was infected with the AIDS virus in 1983 or 1984. He never allowed hemophilia or HIV to limit his aspirations or accomplishments.

Henry was one of the founders of Camp High Hopes, a summer camp for hemophiliac children. At High Hopes he taught tree climbing, rappelling and courage in the face of adversity.

He worked at Crumhorn Mountain Scout Camp as a lifeguard and a craft lodge counselor. As an avid Scout, Scouter and outdoorsman, Henry canoed hundreds of miles in white water. He hiked from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North Rim and back again. He climbed every major mountain in the northeastern United States, and climbed Mt. Rainier in  Washington State and the Matterhorn in Switzerland as a quest of the Make A Wish Foundation.

Henry was an expert water skier, knee boarder and snow skier. He loved high adventure and challenging his physical and mental limits.

Henry is survived by his parents, Henry (Hank) and Joan M. Nicols of Cooperstown; two sisters, Diana Nicols of Oneonta and Jennifer Nicols Curtis of Troy; a brother-in-law, Todd Curtis of Troy; his paternal grandmother, Irma Nicols of Cooperstown; his maternal grandparents, Thomas D. O'Donnell of Oneonta and Rosemary O'Donnell of Pearl River; and a niece and nephew, Victoria and Zachary Curtis of Troy. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, brother and sister Scouts, and friends will sincerely miss the joy and laughter that Henry brought into their lives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2000, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown. Following the committal service, family and friends may gather for a reception in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, this afternoon and evening, Wednesday, May 10, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when Henry's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to the Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; the Upper Hudson Valley Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation, P.O. Box 3707, Albany, N.Y. 12203; or the Otschodela Council Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 1356, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Bernard Barrett

MARGARETVILLE — Bernard Barrett, 87, of Margaretville, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

He was born Dec. 27, 1912, in Andes, the son of Lewis Barrett and Carrie Davis.

He was married to Alma Shelley in 1944; she died in 1985. He then married Virginia Murdock on Feb. 14, 1988, in Montgomery.

He was in the United States Army from 1934-1937.

In earlier years he worked in the toolroom at Bendix in Sidney. For years he operated Barretts Electric Business in Andes.

He lived in Andes most of his life. In recent years he has lived in Goshen, Arkville and Margaretville.

He was a member of Margaretville Masonic Lodge #389. He formerly belonged to Masonic Lodges in Sidney and Delhi.

He was a member of the Andes Methodist Church. He had been active in Arkville and Andes fire departments and the Tremperskill Rod & Gun Club.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Virginia Barrett of Fleischmanns; daughters, Mary L. Matthews and Ann Toliver; sons, Gary A., Arthur D., Lewis W., Earle P., Thomas R., James A., John L., Timothy G., Bernard Jr., Joseph R., and Carl S. Barrett and Fred Kulda; stepchildren, Louis, Dennis, Robert and Thomas Sprague; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ransom and Bruce Barrett; and one sister, Virginia Barrett.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Finch in 1986; a son, Dale Barrett in 1960; a brother, Alfred Barrett; and a sister, Etta Robinson.

Graveside memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2000, at the Andes Cemetery, with the Rev. Bruce Barrett officiating.

Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions in memory of Bernard Barrett may be made to the Andes Fire Department and Ambulance Squad.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Constance Kaufman

PENNSYLVANIA — Constance Hoague Kaufman, 87, of Cranberry Turnpike, Pa., formerly of Delhi, N.Y., died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Sherwood Oaks Skilled Care, Cranberry Turnpike, Pa.

She was born May 7, 1912, in Brookline, Mass., the daughter of the late George and Ann Phelps Card Hoague.

She attended Beaver Country Day School in Brookline, and received a degree in music from Radcliffe College.

Her first teaching assignment was music and rhythm at Hanahauoli School in Honolulu, Hawaii. There she met and married Donald H. Miller who was instrumental in the rebirth of Scientific American magazine.

With her second husband, Pettus Kaufman, she moved to the Catskill Mountains to become a dairy farmer, first in Bovina Center and then in Fraser, N.Y. In her role as herdswoman, Connie Kaufman oversaw the development of one of the highest producing herds in the state.

She also was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Delhi, N.Y., where she sang in the choir for many years.

The Kaufmans retired from farming in 1977, to live in Treadwell, N.Y.

Connie Kaufman was widowed in 1984, and in 1989, moved to Sherwood Oaks, a life care community in  Pennsylvania.

She is survived by her daughter, Lindsey Itkin of New York City; her son, Geoffrey Kaufman of New London, Conn.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Powell; and great-granddaughter, Rosie Powell of Burlington, Vt.; another granddaughter, Rebecca Itkin of Tuscon, Ariz,; a grandson, Joshua Itkin of Charlotte, N.C.; and a niece, Nan Poffinberger of Fox Chapel, Pa.

Memorial contributions on her behalf may be made to the Sherwood Oaks Emergency Fund, care of Bobbie Cleland, Sherwood Oaks, 100 Norman Dr., Cranberry Turnpike, Pa. 16066.

A memorial gathering will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Hamden Hill Farm in Fraser, N.Y. For details call (860) 443-2711.

Edward D. Owens

OCALA, Fla. — Edward D. Owens, 85, of Ocala, Fla., and a former Sidney, N.Y., resident passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, in Ocala, Fla.

He was born Nov. 13, 1914, in Cooperstown, N.Y. Edward was the son of the late Wilfred and Evelyn Cole Owens.

He was first married to Laura Ostrander, who predeceased him Sept. 15, 1964. On Dec. 31, 1965, he married Kathryn Niles. Kay predeceased him Nov. 27, 1991.

Mr. Owens was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. He was a teacher for the Sidney School District for more than 20 years, retiring in June 1974.

Mr. Owens is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Tom Morrone of Norwich, N.Y.; two stepdaughters-in-law, Mary Lee Lynch of Utica, N.Y., and Jan Lynch of Claverack, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Mary Ann Dean, Thomas Morrone Jr., Kimberly Mack, Janet Owens, Cynthia Owens, Darren Lynch, Shayla Gifford and Jay Lynch; seven great-grandchildren, Thomas Dean, Mary Frances Dean, Abigail Dean, Maggie Morrone, Thomas Morrone III, Katie Morrone and Dylan Mack.

Mr. Owens was predeceased by his son, John Owens; and two stepsons, Thomas and Barry Lynch.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 15, 2000, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y., with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be private at the convenience of his family.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Mary C. Searle

FLEISCHMANNS — Mary C. Searle, 82, of Thompson Hollow Road, Fleischmanns, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Highmount, the daughter of Ward David Craft and Mabel Greene.

She married Lumen D. Searle on Oct. 2, 1937, in Long Eddy. He died Oct. 23, 1989.

Mary and her husband shipped cauliflower to New York City and also operated the Highmount Ski Center cafeteria for many years. In the summer months she worked at the Fleischmanns Museum. She was the former town historian for the town of Middletown.

She was a collector of post cards, old bottles and newspaper articles. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Fleischmanns.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Barbara Davis of North Carolina and Linda Thomas of Fleischmanns; two sons, Donald Searle of Fleischmanns and Roy Searle of Fleischmanns; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

Calling hours will be Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The family will be in attendance Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Mary C. Searle to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Howell Horton

SCHENEVUS — Howell "Ben" Horton, 68, of Schenevus, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born June 17, 1931, in California, the son of Thomas Durland and Thelma (Bay) Horton.

He married Dorothy Sheldon on Dec. 23, 1957, in Watertown.

Ben served in the United States Army from 1952-1954.

He has lived in Schenevus for 12 years and was previously from Warnerville.

Ben was a teacher at the Schenevus Central School.

He was a member of the American Legion in Oneonta.

Ben is survived by two brothers, Thomas D. Horton Jr. of Newburgh and Louis Horton of Bangor, Maine; three stepsons, Barry Corell of Alaska, Jay Corell of Westerlo and Gary Corell of Wisconsin; two stepgrandchildren, Eric and Brian Corell of Wisconsin; a cousin, Louis Mills of Middletown; and two dear friends, Deborah and James Utter of Schenevus.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; and a cousin, Sam Mills.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2000, at the Hillside Cemetery in Middletown, with the Rev. Stark G.  Jones officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Ben, to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Thelma M. Gras

MOUNT VISION — Committal services for Thelma M. Gras, who passed away on Feb. 7, 2000, will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Mount Vision Cemetery in Mount Vision.

Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc. 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
