Annie F. Alkes

ONEONTA — Mrs. Annie F. Alkes, 86, of Oneonta, died Wednesday morning, May 10, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 2, 1913, in New York City, the daughter of Herman and Jennie (Muller) Feigenbaum.

Annie married Ben Alkes on March 27, 1938, in Glens Falls. He died April 21, 1993.

In 1960, the Alkes family founded Ben Alkes Sewing Machines and Vacuum Sales and Service, which Mrs. Alkes was co-owner.

Born and educated in Glens Falls, Mrs. Alkes moved with her family to Oneonta in 1948, from South Glens Falls.

She was a member of Temple Beth El, Oneonta. Mrs. Alkes and her late husband had been active square dancers belonging to the Covered Bridge Square Dance Club of Unadilla. They were members of the original square dance group, Buttons and Bows in Oneonta, and were also ballroom dancers at one time.

In her earlier years she was a former president of the Oneonta Plains School P.T.A., a Brownie Scout leader and Sunday school teacher.

Annie is survived by one daughter, Lana Judith Alkes of Oneonta; one sister, Cele Abrams of Michigan; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Feigenbaum and Margaret Feigenbaum, both of Glens Falls; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, and I.A. and Roslin Alkes of Glens Falls. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held noon, Friday, May 12, 2000, at Temple Beth El, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, with Rabbi Donald Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

The family requests no flowers be sent, however, contributions may be made to the Temple Beth El Building Fund or Catskill Area Hospice in memory of Annie F. Alkes.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Jeremiah C. Norris

DELHI — Committal services for Jeremiah C. Norris, who passed away on Jan. 23, 2000, will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the Shavertown Cemetery, Andes, with the Rev. Paul Keehr, pastor, officiating.

Robert Franz Sr.

ONEONTA — Robert W. Franz Sr., 79, of Oneonta, died Sunday evening, May 7, 2000, at his residence.

He was born April 9, 1921, in Brooklyn.

He married Lorna Hicks in 1942, and she predeceased him.

Bob served in the United States Navy during World War II.

An area resident for the past 17 years, moving here from Brooklyn, he was a retired self-employed building contractor.

He is survived by a son, Steven G., and daughter-in-law, Anita Thompson Franz, of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren, Nicole and Eric Franz of Otego, who were the children of Robert W. Franz Jr.; and a sister, Alice Kurfuss of Long Island.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Jayne Franz; and two sons, Robert Jr., and James Franz.

A gathering to celebrate the life of Bob Franz, with family and friends, will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

Margaret O'Rourke

WESTVILLE — Mrs. Margaret B. O'Rourke, 82, of Westville, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare.

She was born in Jersey City, N.J., on July 22, 1917, a daughter of George and Margaret (Hofman) Ehlenberger

Margaret graduated from Lincoln High School in Jersey City, after which she worked for several firms performing clerical and secretarial duties.

Margaret married Frank O'Rourke, who predeceased her on April 22, 1988, in 1963, in Jersey City. She and her husband moved to Westville in 1978.

Margaret is survived by a sister-in-law, Mona Ehlenberger of Westville; a niece, Mona Elizabeth Ehlenberger of Falls Church, Va.; and a nephew, David Ehlenberger of Milford.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Milford, officiating. Burial will follow in Westville Cemetery.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Nils Gordon Nilsen

WORCESTER — Graveside services with military honors for Nils Gordon Nilsen, 71, who died on March 6, 2000, will be held on Saturday, May 13, at 11 a.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, with the Rev. William Harkins officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Thelma M. Gras

MOUNT VISION — Committal services for Thelma M. Gras, who passed away on Feb. 7, 2000, will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mount Vision Cemetery in Mount Vision.

Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Anthony Vertucci

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Graveside services for Anthony R. Vertucci, 85, who died on Feb. 25, 2000, will be held on Saturday, May 13, at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Nellie Harrison

BURNT HILLS — Nellie Lodge Harrison, 94, of Jenkins Road, Burnt Hills, died May 10, 2000, at her residence, after a short illness.

She was born in Huddersfield, England.

She was married to Bernard Harrison for 56 years. He died in 1984.

She lived at her current residence for 15 years, and for 38 years in Cherry Valley.

She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley.

Nellie is survived by one daughter, Barbara Skelton of Burnt Hills; one granddaughter, Barbara Shipway of Burnt Hills; and one great-granddaughter, Sara Jane Shipway of Tarrytown.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Harry Lodge, both of Juddersfield, England.

Funeral services will be private.

Burial will be held at the Memory's Garden, Colonie.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made in Nellie Lodge Harrison's memory to Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, N.Y. 12308 or the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12203.

Harold Barrett Sr.

VENICE, Fla. — Harold Fredrick Barrett Sr., 78, of Venice, Fla., died Tuesday, May 9, 2000.

Mr. Barrett was born on April 4, 1922, in Jordanville, N.Y., and had been a resident of Venice since 1990, coming from Richfield Springs, N.Y.

He was a life member of the American Legion #0616, a member of the Otsego County CB and Emergency Club, Teamster Union, Sportsmen Club, all of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; a veteran of the Army serving during World War II; and of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Alice R. Barrett of Venice, Fla.; daughter, Valerie Barrett of Venice, Fla.; son, Harold F. "Buddy" Barrett Jr. of Nokomis, Fla.; sisters, Eleanor Pestar and Shirley Potts, both of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; brother, Robert Barrett of West Winfield, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2000, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. with funeral services at 3 p.m. at Farley Funeral Home Venice Chapel.

Farley Funeral Home & Crematory Venice Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie J. Hulbert

ONEONTA — Graveside services for Nellie J. Hulbert, who died Feb. 12, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, will be held on Friday, May 12, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Rodney  Johnson officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Hame, Oneonta.

Albert A. Loomis

CHERRY VALLEY — Committal and military burial services, for Mr. Albert A. Loomis, who passed away Feb. 19, 2000, will be held on Monday, May 15, 2000, at 10 a.m. in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery, Schuyler Lake, with Mr. Lyman  Johnson officiating.

Arrangements were by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Dorothy M. Earl

WINDSOR — Dorothy M. Earl, 73, of Windsor, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at her home.

She was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Unadilla, the daughter of J. Stanley and Ruth Chapman Earl.

She had been a 37-year resident of Windsor and a retired elementary school teacher. During her teaching career, she taught school in the Bainbridge Central School; the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon; and the Windsor Central School District.

Dorothy was actively involved and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Windsor. As a member of the National United Methodist Church, she served on the General Board of Global Ministries and was a delegate to the General and Jurisdictional Conference in 1992 and 1996. As a member of the Wyoming Conference, she served on the Conference Council on Ministries; Camp, Conference and Retreat Ministries; Homes for the Aging Conference Foundation Inc.; Global Ministries Division; Victim's Advocacy Network; Mission Education and Cultivation Committee/Volunteers in Mission; Zimbabwe Partnership; Committee on Episcopacy; and the Board of Ordained Ministry.

She was a longtime active member of the United Methodist Women at all levels and faithfully served on the board of directors of the Wyoming Conference Children's Home and its auxiliary.

Dorothy is survived by her brothers and their wives, James C. and Marilynn Earl of Unadilla and Donald and Martha Earl of Unadilla; and four nieces and three nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church, Windsor, with the Rev. John Goodell, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wyoming Conference Haiti Partnership, care of Wyoming Conference UMC, P.O. Box 58, Endicott, N.Y. 13761.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla.

Frederick E. Fritts

ONEONTA — Frederick E. Fritts, 69, of Oneonta, died early Friday morning, May 11, 2000, at his home.

He was born on June 24, 1930, in the town of Butternuts, a son of Leon Byard and Hazel M. (Tilley) Fritts.

A lifelong resident of this area, Fred attended school in Fly Creek and graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1950.

He had been a cook at The Duke Restaurant in Oneonta, retiring in 1998.

He is survived by his close friend and companion of 16 years, Mary Ann Fredenburg, of Oneonta; two sisters, Mrs. Clemma Turner of Fly Creek and Mrs. Joyce Link of Mount Morris; five brothers and five sisters-in-law, Irvin and Sylvia Fritts of Toddsville, Robert C. Fritts of Florida, Allen Fritts of Otego, Gerald and Jean Fritts of Lincolnton, Ga., and Charles and Ruth Fritts of Elizabeth City, N.C.; Mrs. Ralph Fritts of Herkimer and Mrs. Marion Fritts of Cooperstown; Mary Ann Fredenburg's daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Frank Morissette, and grandchildren, Kelly and Jeffrey Morissette, all of Howes Cave; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fred was predeceased by four brothers, Carl B. Fritts, James Edward Fritts, Ralph Donald Fritts and Leon Fritts; and one sister, Clara Louise Fritts.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Aletha May Mudge

GRAND GORGE — Aletha May Mudge, 69, of Grand Gorge Senior Apartments, Grand Gorge, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Ashland, the daughter of Paul Tompkins and Gertrude Spaulding

She married Donald Mudge in September 1992. He died Feb. 24, 1999.

She worked a short time at the Hunter Mountain Ski Center cafeteria.

She has lived in the Gilboa, Windham and Grand Gorge areas most of her life.

Aletha has enjoyed her stay at Grand Gorge Senior Apartments and all the people she has helped and visited. She had many puzzles and her hobby was putting them together.

Aletha is survived by her daughter, Bette Schoonmaker, of Maplecrest; two sons, Ernest Hilliker of  Washington, D.C., and Paul Hilliker of Gilboa; six brothers, Harold, Richard, Donald, Gerald, Paul Jr. and Garry; three sisters, Alice, Joyce and Glenda; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, Herbert; and by three sisters, Evelyn, Margie and Pauline.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Roger H. Shafer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

Calling hours are before the service Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

John J. (Jack) Klingensmith

HARTWICK — Jack Klingensmith, 71, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Youngstown, Ohio.

Jack was a retired, self-employed roofer.

He was a member and ex-chief for the Wyandanch Fire Department on Long Island, where he served for many years.

He enjoyed playing his banjo and organ and visits with his grandchildren.

Surviving him is his wife, Maud, and their children, John and Cynthia Klingensmith of Raleigh, N.C., Jean and Kenneth Zore of North Babylon, Larry and Anita Klingensmith of Deer Park and Carol and Gene Ellis of Hartwick. He was a wonderful grandfather to Jackie, Kenny and Robyn Zore, Lauren and Tom Klingensmith and Andy and Justin Ellis.

Jack is predeceased by his youngest daughter, Jacqueline.

He will truly be missed by all.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
