Benjamin Morehouse

NEW LISBON — Benjamin B. Morehouse, 92, of New Lisbon,• ied Thursday, June 8, 2000, in the town of Middlefield.

He was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Garrattsville, the son of Elbert (Bert) and Ethylene (Yates) Morehouse.

He married Alta Wagner on July 17, 1933; she died April 23, 1998.

He spent his childhood in the New Lisbon area.

He was a 1926 graduate of Morris Central School and 1928 graduate of the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

Benjamin is survived by two sons, Daniel Morehouse and his wife, Linda, of Garrattsville and Grover Morehouse and his wife, Maryann, of Genoa, Ohio; two daughters, Denise Hughes and her husband, Gordon, of New Hartford and Audrey Teed of Morris; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Henry Morehouse, in 1951.

He was a milk tester from 1928-1933 and a dairy farmer on the 102-year-old family farm in Garrattsville. He retired in 1995 at the age of 88.

He was a 75-year member of the Grange; member of the Advisory Board of Wilber National Bank; on the board of directors of First National Bank of Morris; member of and former vestryman for the Zion Episcopal Church, Morris; supervisor for the town of New Lisbon from 1962-1967; and member of the board of supervisors of Otsego County from 1962-1967.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 12, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church, Morris, with the Rev. John L. Scott of the Zion Episcopal Church, Morris, officiating. Interment will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Garrattsville Fire Department, Garrattsville.

Genevieve Chase

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Genevieve Chase, 66, of Charlotteville, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

She was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Bennington, Vt., the daughter of Seymour W. and Penelope Mae (Ploss) Groff.

She married Albert J. Chase Sr. on Aug. 28, 1950, in Batcherville. He died Feb. 7, 1998.

Genevieve was employed with the Story House Corp. in Charlotteville; she also was a nutrition aide at the Cooperative Extension in Cobleskill.

Genevieve was a member of the United Methodist Church in Edinburg.

Genevieve was always there for everyone. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and she will be missed dearly.

Genevieve is survived by eight children, Daniel Chase of Fultonham, Dayle Kennedy of Sharon Springs, Ricky Chase of  South Carolina, Penny Lum of Charlotteville, Albert J. Chase Jr. of Esperance, John Chase of Charlotteville, David Chase of Cobleskill and Dennis Chase of Richmondville; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Ida Bull, of Bennington, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, James; and a brother, Franklin Groff.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes, pastor of United Methodist Churches in Stamford and Harpersfield, officiating.

The graveside committal service for Genevieve and her husband, Albert, will be at the Breakabeen Cemetery, Breakabeen, on Sunday, June 18, 2000, at 4 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

LeRoy Johnson

BAINBRIDGE — LeRoy "Deak" Johnson, 71, of Bainbridge, passed away Friday, June 9, 2000, at his home.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1947-1950.

Deak was previously employed by Eldreds Feed Store for 10 years; E.C.D. of Bendix for five years; and Bordens Chemical Co., Bainbridge, for 22 years. He retired in 1992.

Deak was an avid hunter, bowler and golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Alice Mills Johnson, of Bainbridge; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael  Johnson of Bainbridge, Richard  Johnson and Anne Mott of Bainbridge and David and Donna  Johnson of Kansas; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Glen Brewer of Bainbridge, Marian Kenyon of Binghamton and Betty and John Schaffer of Arizona; four grandchildren, Matthew Johnson, Derrick Mott of Bainbridge, Corey and Carey  Johnson of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

LeRoy is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Hazel (Shofkom) Johnson; three brothers, Donald, Edward and Frank Johnson; and sister, Grace Hawkins.

Upon LeRoy's request, there will be no visitation or service.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, at the family's convenience.

LeRoy's family wishes to thank Hospice of Chenango County and the volunteers for their many hours of help and care.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County or the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Gladsby M. Shaffer

NORTH BLENHEIM — Gladsby M. Shaffer, 82, of Burnt Hill Road, North Blenheim, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Brooklyn, the son of Edwin R. and Edna (Mattice) Shaffer.

He married Daisy Regular on June 21, 1939. Daisy died Dec. 21, 1970.

Gladsby owned and operated a dairy farm in North Blenheim for many years. He was a bus driver for 27 years at the Gilboa Central School.

Gladsby was a member of the North Blenheim Presbyterian Church, the North Blenheim Fire Department and the Gilboa Lodge F&AM of Gilboa. He was an avid fan of his grandsons' participation in sporting events from Little League through their school years.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Mark Gray, of Stamford; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Karen Shaffer, of Oneonta; four grandsons, Patrick, Brian and Casey Gray of Stamford and Cole Eric Shaffer of Oneonta; a brother, Robert E. Shaffer, of North Blenheim; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the family plot in the Riverview Cemetery in North Blenheim, with the Gilboa Lodge F&AM officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Gladsby's memory to the North Blenheim Fire Department, Main Street, North Blenheim, N.Y. 12131.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Carl Robinson

SIDNEY — Carl Robinson, 86, a resident of the Skilled Nursing Facility at The Hospital, Sidney, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, June 8, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Guilford. Carl was the son of the late Walter and Pansy Page Robinson.

On April 30, 1934, he married Gladys Owen in New Milford, Pa. She predeceased him Jan. 18, 1980.

For many years, Carl was a dairy farmer in the Chenango and Otsego County area. After leaving farming, he opened the Rotary Gas Station on Cartwright Avenue, Sidney. Mr. Robinson retired from the Sidney Central Schools, were he worked for several years.

He is survived by his son, Robert Robinson, of Elyria, Ohio; sister, Dorothy LaFache, of Utica; eight grandchildren, Alan, Dennis, Keith, Thomas and James Robinson Jr., Valarie Henriksen, Lori Snyder and Denise Henzes; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, James Robinson Sr.; two brothers, Paul and Archie Robinson; and one sister, Evelyn Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 12, 2000, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. till service time on Monday at the funeral chapel.

Gifts may be directed to Alzheimer's Association, 1406 Monroe St., Endicott, N.Y. 13760.

Homer E. Robinson

WORCESTER — Homer E. Robinson, 70, passed away at home on Thursday, June 8, 2000.

He was born May 1, 1930, the son of Emmett and Sarah (Bailey) Robinson.

Homer is survived by one brother and his wife, Arnold and Noel Robinson; three sisters, Ruth Knapp and her husband, Winnie, Frances McMullen and Esther Walzer; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Harold; and two sisters, Dorothy Becker and Beatrice Forman.

There will be no calling hours.

A private memorial service will be held at the family home.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Mildred T. Gilbert

FT. MCCOY, Fla. — Mildred T. Gilbert, 87, formerly of Burlington Flats, died on Friday, June 9, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on May 31, 1913, in New London, daughter of the late John D. and Blanche Wilcox Murfit.

Mildred was educated in the Knoxboro Public School.

On Feb. 27, 1932, she married Donald F. Gilbert in Oneida Castle — a blessed union of 65 years until his passing on May 11, 1997.

She and her husband owned and operated their own dairy farm in Burlington Flats until 1974, when they retired and moved to Ft. McCoy, Fla.

Mrs. Gilbert's life was centered on being a mother, caring for her family and her home.

Surviving are five sons and their wives, Leonard and Lois Gilbert of Mohawk, Franklin and Gwenn Gilbert of Ft. McCoy, Fla., Donald and Colette Gilbert of Middleville, William and Connie Gilbert of Frankfort and Thomas and Diane Gilbert of West Exeter; five daughters, Virginia and her husband, Richard Hardman of Grand Blanc, Joyce Shafer of Brick, N.J., Margaret and her husband, Ronald Buell of Coconut Creek, Bonnie and her husband, Howard Bowen and Gayle Irene Gilbert of Burlington Flats; one sister, Dorothy Kohl of Rome; a brother-in-law, Edward Gilbert of Pearl City, Hawaii; 31 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Donald; she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Gilbert; two brothers, Merritt and Earl Murfit; three sisters, Bess Hull, Florence Moot and Edna Hilts; a grandson, Brian Gilbert; two great-granddaughters, Katie Hardman and Rebecca Gilbert; and a son-in-law, Durward K. Shafer, who died in 1996.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Exeter Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Highfield, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Exeter Center Cemetery. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Exeter Center United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Robert D. Simon Sr.

WEST WINFIELD — Robert D. Simon Sr., 68, of West Winfield, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2000.

He was born April 10, 1932, in New York City, the son of Robert A. and Gertrude Vey Simon.

He received his education in New York City and was a veteran of the United States Army Engineer Corps during 1954 through 1956.

He married Alice T. Hurley on May 9, 1954, at St. Frances of Rome, Bronx.

He was a manual arts teacher at the Veterans Administration in Montrose.

Robert was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Meghan Simon of Orange City, Fla., and Alice and Dale Rexhouse, Christine and Brian Spence and Mrs. Elizabeth Surber, all of Fishkill, and Nora and Frank Trudeau of Dannemore; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kathy Simon of Saugerties and John and Dawn Simon of Wing Dale; grandchildren, Melissa, Elizabeth and David Surber, Timothy and Carrie Simon, Amanda and Abigail Trudeau, Simon and Christopher Spence and Dawn, Carl and Justin Nymann; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Cora Simon of Clearmont, Fla.; nephews, James R. Simon and the Rev. John Hurley; and nieces, Lori Jean Phillips and Patty Ann McGovern.

The Funeral Mass will be Monday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours were at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gladys E. Niles

SIDNEY — Gladys E. Niles, 91, of 10 Sherman Ave., Sidney, passed away peacefully Friday, June 9, 2000, at the River-Mede Manor Nursing Home, Binghamton.

Mrs. Niles was born Oct. 14, 1908, in Carbondale, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Palmer and Rachel Thomas Walker.

On Nov. 26, 1928, she married Roland L. Niles in Greene. He predeceased her July 31, 1970.

Before moving to Sidney in the early 1980s, Gladys lived on the Yaleville Road, Bainbridge.

She attended the Circle Drive Alliance Church, Sidney.

She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Janice Heslin of Binghamton, Phyllis Cutting of Port Crane, Ann and Cecil Peterson of Sidney and Rachel and Charles Holmes of Elmira; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Phyllis Niles of Bainbridge, Roland and Faye Niles of Bainbridge, and Gerald and Jerri Niles of Bainbridge; brother, George Walker of Smithville Flats; sister, Mary Henrikson of Michigan; also 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in the Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene.

Friends may call from noon to service time at 2 p.m.

Mary H. Krueger

ONEONTA — Mary Helen Krueger, 93 years young, formerly of Schenevus died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 15, 1906, in Hoboken, N.J.

She married Harry Kurt Krueger.

Mary was employed at the Federal Carton Factory in North Bergen, N.J., were she lived most of her life before moving up to Schenevus in 1981.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and the Alter Rosary Society in Schenevus for a few years.

Mary is survived by her sister, Connie Mckenna of Wehoken, N.J.; her children, Kurt and his wife, Janet Krueger, of Schenevus, Richie and his wife, Ann Krueger, of Schenevus, Elsa T. Agresta of Toms River, N.J., and Dominick and his wife, Jean Krueger, of Toms River, N.J.; Mary was also blessed with many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two beloved sisters and one brother; her son, William L. Krueger and his wife, Ann; and her beloved husband, Harry Kurt Krueger, who died July 26, 1982.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 6:45 p.m. and a Vigil service will be at 8:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 15, 2000, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

A graveside committal service will take place Friday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at the Grove Reformed Church Cemetery, North Bergen, N.J., with the Rev. J. Graziano officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Robynwood Adult Home, Activities Fund, 43 Walnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.
