Robert John Hess
GILBERTSVILLE — Robert John Hess, formerly of Gilbertsville, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2000.
Bob was born in Corona, Queens, on Jan. 23, 1918, the son of Robert A. and Emma (Remelius) Hess.
He married Ruth Frances Schellhammer on May 26, 1951. Together, they raised four children.
Bob retired from his position as a machinist with Bendix Corp. in 1984, after 32 years of service.
His community and volunteer activities were a great source of pleasure and pride. He was actively involved in the Boys Scouts of America for well over 20 years, serving as the former scoutmaster of Troop 44 in Gilbertsville.
A World War II combat veteran, Bob was a former commander of the Legion Post in Gilbertsville. He was also a former elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville.
Bob was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife, Ruth, his middle son, John Robert Hess, and his eldest sister, Louisa Melzer.
He is survived by his eldest son, Rolf Hess of Fredericksburg, Va.; his daughter, Barbara and son-in-law, Thomas Bickauskas, and a 6-year-old granddaughter, Rachel of Niskayuna; his youngest son, Robert and daughter-in-law Sunny Lee, 3-year-old granddaughter Olivia and 15-month-old grandson John, all of Niskayuna; and his two sisters, Terry Baker of Williston Park and Frances Lehnberger of Stuart, Fla.; along with many dear friends and family members.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 21, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 22, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Donald Boardman officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to any one of the following organizations in Bob's memory, the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville, the Gilbertsville Volunteer Emergency Squad or Boy Scout Troop 44 of Gilbertsville.
Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Thelma B. Jones
SOUTH EDMESTON — Thelma B. Jones, 92, of South Edmeston died June 17, 2000, in New Berlin.
She was born July 8, 1907, in Brookfield, the daughter of John H. and Sara H. (Brown) Burch.
She married Alton D. Jones on Oct. 30, 1929, in Unadilla Forks. They were married 47 years. Alton died Sept. 26, 1976.
She spent her childhood in the Brookfield and Leonardsville areas.
She was a graduate of Leonardsville Central School. She was a teacher and homemaker.
She was a member of the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston.
Thelma is survived by one son, Donald F. and Catherine Jones of McGraw; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert and Wanda Burch of South Edmeston; two sisters, Doris and Horace Root of West Edmeston and Madeline and Fred Hurlbutt of New Berlin.
She was predeceased by one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Cecil Gill; and one brother, Ralph Burch.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with Pastor Jeff McLallen of the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston, officiating.
Interment will be held in the Gazlay Cemetery, South Edmeston.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 20, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

William E. Frantz
STAMFORD — William E. Frantz, 85, of Tower Mountain Road, Stamford, died June 17, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.
He was born Nov. 26, 1914, the son of Harold and Mary (Davis) Frantz.
Bill was married to Jeannette Stout on May 29, 1971.
He was a resident of Stamford for the past 19 years. Bill was a member of the Carpenter's Union #1462 out of Philadelphia, and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Burlington, N.J.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Stout Frantz of Stamford; sons, Gary Frantz and his wife, Mary Jane of Mt. Holly, N.J., and William Frantz II of Florida; his daughter, Karen Corson and husband, Walter of Yardley, Pa.; his stepdaughters, Yetta Jean Teo and husband, Tau Teo of Hudson and Mary Ann Dansky of Albany; grandchildren, Susan Frantz Bohn and husband, Ronald of Arlington, Va., Joseph Frantz of Ocean City, N.J., Steven Corson of Yardley, Pa., Jennifer Griffin and husband, Steven, of Florida, and William Frantz III and wife, Jennifer, of Florida; stepgranddaughters, Lauren and Sarah of Hudson; great-grandchildren, Eric Bohn of Virginia, Tiffany Frantz and Branden and Devin Griffin, all of Florida; cousin, Virginia Clowes and husband, Robert, of Wrightstown, N.J.; sisters-in-law, Helen Frantz of Bensalem, Pa., and Margaret Frantz of Rome; nephews, Robert and Charles Frantz of Texas, Harold Frantz Jr., Richard Frantz, Kenneth Frantz Jr., Dennis Frantz; and a niece, Peggy Frantz.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Harold, Al, Lester and George.
Memorial services will be held at the Hall Funeral Home at a later date and will be announced.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Bill's memory to either the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or the Hobart Emergency Squad, Cornell Avenue, Hobart, N.Y. 13788.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.
Wanda C. Bradley
SUMMIT — Wanda C. Bradley, 70, of Wharton Hollow Road died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County.
Mrs. Bradley was born July 6, 1929, in Cobleskill, and was the daughter of Elmer and Eliza (Gosweiler) Collins.
She and her husband were the owners of the Red Barn Bar and Restaurant located in Summit until the business was sold in 1992.
She also lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., for 10 years and while there was an aide for a nursing home for four years. She moved back to the Summit area in June 1984.
Mrs. Bradley is survived by her husband, Maurice Bradley, whom she married in November 1981; four sisters, Ruthellen Collins of Gloversville, Gertrude Hadsell of Albany, Doris Tillapaugh of Carlisle and Jean Guay of Richmondville; three brothers, Gerald Collins of Honesdale, Pa., Roger Collins of Morris and Ronald Collins of Worcester; three stepsons, Keith Bradley of Lake Worth, Fla., Kevin Bradley of Summit and Jerry Bradley of Worcester; as well as several nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren.
Cremation will take place at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
There will be no services or calling hours.

Willie Mattice
PRATTSVILLE — Willie "Chic" Mattice, 87, of Prattsville, went to be with the Lord, June 18, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 30, 1912, in Conesville, the son of William and Ola Becker Mattice.
He was a member of the Prattsville United Methodist Church and an honorary member of both the Conesville and Prattsville fire departments.
"Chic" worked in the Manorkill Creamery, owned a farm for many years in Prattsville and worked for the Greene County Highway Department for more than 18 years.
Over the years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and music, especially the violin. He took pleasure in spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Madeline (VanValkenburgh) Mattice of Prattsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and MaryLou Mattice and Lawrence and Sandy Mattice of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Mrs. Steve (Darlene) Magee, Marilyn Mattice, Troy Mattice, Mrs. Wade (Tonya) Harman, Kara Mattice and Jason Mattice; four great-grandchildren; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Prattsville Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home in Hunter, between 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2000.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Prattsville Methodist Church or to Prattsville Fire Department Rescue Squad.
Carlton Georgia
ONEONTA — Carlton Georgia, 88, of Oneonta, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born July 5, 1911, in Otego, the son of Myron and Jennie (Briscoe) Georgia.
He married Lois W. Prentice on June 20, 1936, in Rockdale.
A lifelong area resident, Mr. Georgia was a retired dairy farmer, who at one time had an active interest in showing his cattle at area county fairs. He also loved sharing special times with his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois W. Georgia of Oneonta; his two children and their spouses, Milton and Linda Georgia of Greene and Martha and Roger Nolf of Reed City, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Cooper.
A funeral and committal service will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at 2 p.m., in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad.

Muriel Fernandez
FLEISCHMANNS — Muriel Fernandez, 57, formerly of Fleischmanns, died June 15, 2000, in Miami, Fla.
She was born May 14, 1943, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Henry V. Geoghan and Marie C. Corrigan.
Muriel was a teacher at Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, N.J. She also taught English as a second language at Fairview Library, Margaretville. At the State University College of Technology at Delhi she was involved with the GED Class. Before being a teacher, Muriel was a Dominican nun for 10 years.
She has lived in Florida for the past three years, living before in Fleischmanns and Englewood, N.J.
Muriel is survived by one daughter, Marie Fernandez; granddaughter, Tatiana; mother, Marie Geoghan of Fleischmanns; sisters, Maryann and Brigid; brothers, Henry Jr., Thomas, Dennis, Kevin and Sean Geoghan.
Memorial Funeral Mass will be conducted at a later date at St. Andrews Church, Flushing.
Contributions may be made in memory of Muriel to the Fairview Library, Margaretville.
Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Robert J. Black Sr.
NEW BERLIN — Robert James Black Sr., 60, of New Berlin, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in New Berlin.
He was born July 27, 1939, in Goveneur, the son of Floyd and Phoebe (Simmons) Black.
He is survived by his loving partner of 30 years, Frances Wilcox.
He spent his childhood in the Goveneur area.
He was an employee of the Wassaic State School for many years.
Robert is survived by one daughter, Jammie and Gary Decker of Millerton; three sons, Carl Wilcox and Ray Wilcox, both of Tupper Lake and Robert and Alicia Black Jr. of New Berlin; grandchildren, Gary, Zachary and Sara Decker of Millerton and Khoriasa Black of Dover Plains; brothers, Art Black of Dover Plains and John Black of Virginia.
He was predeceased by one brother, Floyd Black.
There will be no funeral service.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 21, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
Robert L. Ballard
COOPERSTOWN — Robert L. Ballard, 72, of Beaver Street in Cooperstown, died Monday afternoon, June 19, 2000, surrounded by his family, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born on Nov. 24, 1927, in Cooperstown, a son of Clyde K. and Etta (Averell) Ballard.
Bob first married Harriet M. (Peg) Quaif on June 26, 1948, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown. Peg died on March 30, 1980. He then married Jean T. Solarchik on Dec. 26, 1981, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.
A lifelong resident of Cooperstown, Bob graduated from the Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1947. He then went on to work in various occupations including being employed by the Red and White Store in Cooperstown as a butcher and as a truck driver for Otsego County.
During World War II he was proud to serve as an Air Raid Warden and was posted as a spotter on top of the Second National Bank in Cooperstown.
In 1968, Bob began a career as a respiratory therapy technician at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. He retired from that position in 1986, but continued on as a volunteer advocating for patients' rights.
Bob's boundless love for all people and his compassionate demeanor was also displayed during the years he was employed by the Ingalls, Connell & Dow Funeral Home in Cooperstown as a funeral service assistant.
A devoted communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Bob was also an active member of the Cooperstown community. He was a former leader for the Webelos and the Boy Scouts and was a former Advancement Committee chairman for the Boy Scouts.
A past president of the Cooperstown Fire Department, he also served with the fire police and was a foreman for Mechanics Hook and Ladder Co. No. 5. Bob was also a former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, a former member and past master of Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons in Cooperstown, a former member of the Cooperstown Fish and Game Club and was past chief of the Improved Order of Red Men. He also served as the first president of the Otsego County Civil Service Employment Association, was a former member and past president of the Leatherstocking Tuesday Night Golf League.
A devoted Cooperstownian, Bob was a member of the Mohican Club, served two terms as president of the Native Sons of Cooperstown and served two terms as a trustee for the village of Cooperstown and was a member of the Cooperstown Alumni Association.
Bob will be fondly remembered for his love of people and his keen sense of humor, and will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
Bob is survived by his wife of 18 years, Jean of Cooperstown; two daughters, Deborah L. Ballard of Alexandria, Va., and Karen M. Dailey and her husband, Douglas, of Oneonta; two sons, Stephen J. Ballard and his wife, Rhonda, of Supply, N.C., and Joseph F. Bozosi Jr. and his wife, Susan, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother, Clyde J. (Bud) Ballard and his wife, Evelyn Murphy Ballard, of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren, Jacob, Benjamin, Sean, James, Daniel, Kenneth and Jonti; one uncle, Herb Averell of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one aunt, Betty Coleman of Hyde Park; and many special and wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2000, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown this afternoon and evening, Wednesday, June 21, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., when Bob's family will be in attendance.

John Moffat
BOCA GRANDE, Fla. — John Moffat, 82, of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Boca Grande, Fla., died Monday, June 19, 2000, in Punta Gorda, Fla.
He was born April 5, 1918, in Yonkers, N.Y., the son of Stanley M. Moffat and Sarah V.H.P. Denniston Moffat.
John spent his youth between his home on the Scribner farm in Bedford, N.Y., and summers on the family boat in and around Block Island, R.I.
He graduated from The Hill School, Pottstown, Pa., in 1937, and was a member of the Class of 1941 at Princeton University.
During the Second World War, he served as a corporal in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the Officer Candidate Regiment at Fort Belvoir, Va.
Following the war, he and his first wife, the former Lovice Whitall of Bedford, settled in Cooperstown, N.Y., where he was employed by F. Ambrose Clark as the assistant manager of Iroquois Farm. At the same time, he operated a dairy and horse farm on Bissell Road in Toddsville. After leaving Iroquois Farm, Moffat owned and operated the Meadowlark Dairy on Beaver Street in Cooperstown.
With his subsequent marriage to the equestrian champion Elaine Moore, John devoted his full attention to his lifelong love of horses, establishing the Cooperstown Stables, a thoroughbred breeding and showing farm on Beaver Meadow Road in Cooperstown. The Moffats taught hundreds of local children at the farm throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s and also played host to the nationally recognized Cooperstown Stables Horse Show for nearly three decades.
In 1968, he was named director of Riding at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., where he developed one of the nation's top collegiate riding programs and led an intercollegiate team that regularly attained regional championships and placed second in the nation in the 1976-77 season. He remained at Mount Holyoke until his retirement in 1984.
Mr. Moffat's equestrian career included studies at the Fulmer School of Horsemanship in England and the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria. He was a licensed and recognized judge by the American Horse Shows Association in Hunters, Jumpers and Hunt Seat Equitation and was a regular fixture at horse shows throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Central America. He served as president of the Western New England Chapter of the Professional Horseman's Association and the New England Region Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and he was a former director of the Genesee Valley Breeder's Association and a member of the Connecticut Valley Hounds, the New York Horse Council, the Greenville County (SC) Hounds and the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association.
Locally he served on the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Cooperstown Country Club.
Mr. Moffat is survived by his wife, Elaine M. Moffat of Cooperstown and Boca Grande, Fla.; his first wife, Lovice Quigley of Bedford; two sons and daughters-in-law, James M. and Amanda Moffat of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., and J. Michael and Cory S. Moffat of Cooperstown, N.Y.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sarah M. and Barry Calder of West Redding, Conn., and Pamela Moffat Lawrence of Waccabuc, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a cousin, Theodore Fuller of Greenwich, Conn.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Moffat in 1961; and two sisters, Frances M. Tighe and Barbara M. Sutro.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, River Street, Cooperstown, N.Y., on Friday, June 23, 2000, at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Douglas Smith, rector, officiating. The Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus, will assist.
