Fred J. Gartelman

ARKVILLE — Fred John Gartelman, 64, of Arkville, died Wednesday, July 6, 2000, at his home.

He was born July 1, 1936, in Queens, the son of Fred and Elizabeth Marie Kruger Gartelman.

He married Della Sweeney on Jan. 5, 1958.

He was a self-employed truck driver before moving to Arkville. Mr. Gartelman also was a member of the Arkville Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Della Gartelman; a son, Fred James Gartelman; a daughter, Colleen Ann Gartelman; a brother, John Fred Gartelman; two sisters, Mary Tuminello and Eleanor Blum and; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2000, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with Pastor Elliott Oakes officiating.

Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Anna L. Ostrowski

WORCESTER — Anna Louise Ostrowski, 75, of Worcester, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Yonkers, the daughter of Ruloff Sr. and Eliza Reeve (Nodine) Kolb.

She married Alexander Joseph Ostrowski on Oct. 24, 1962. He predeceased her on Sept. 8, 1990.

Mrs. Ostrowski lived in Yonkers until her 55th year. She retired to Hill Road in Worcester on Sept. 15, 1980.

She was a supervisor in the Incoming Returns Department for the Bank of New York in  White Plains for 35 years.

Mrs. Ostrowski was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester since 1983. She was ordained as an elder and was clerk of sessions in February 1992. She was also a member of the Yonkers B.P.O.E. 707 Emblem Club, Worcester Women's Club, Worcester American Legion Post 1584 Auxiliary, First Presbyterian Women's Association, Worcester Choral Group and the Worcester Historical Society.

She is survived by two stepsons, Alexander J. Ostrowski Jr. of Yonkers and John T. Ostrowski of Waccabuc; one stepdaughter, Mary P. Graves of Monsey; one brother, John F. Kolb Sr. and his wife, Nellie, of Yonkers; three grandchildren, Kim Marie, John II and Chad Ostrowski; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Malec; two brothers, Ruloff Kolb Jr. and Edgar Kolb.

Calling hours will be Monday, July 10, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Ostrowski to the First Presbyterian Church, 148 Main St., Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Frank B. Losee

EDMESTON — Frank B. Losee, 74, of Edmeston, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at his home.

He was born March 18, 1926, in  White Plains, the son of Edward S. and Bertha (Weiss) Losee.

He married Eileen M. Andrews on Aug. 23, 1949, at her parents home in Edmeston.

Frank, affectionately referred to as the "Mayor" of Edmeston, was a member of the Edmeston Second Baptist Church, Edmeston Fire Department, Wharton Valley American Legion Post #1311 and was previously active in the Cub Scouts. Frank also served on the Edmeston Emergency Squad for 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen; his daughter and son-in-law, Tamara and James Bolton; his son, Michael K. Losee; his grandchildren, Jeremy J. Bolton, Kevin J. Bolton and Ryan J. Bolton; his brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Jean Losee; his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Howard Talbot; his mother-in-law, Ruby Andrews; and brother-in-law, Claire Andrews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating. Burial will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, July 11, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, a Firemen's Service to be held at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Frank's memory to either the Edmeston Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Harold Thompson

ONEONTA — Harold E. "Shorty" Thompson, 60, of Oneonta, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Davenport on March 13, 1940, and married Joan Bennett on Oct. 24, 1964, in Laurens.

Harold served in the United States Air Force.

For the past 15 years, Harold was a carpenter for Over and Under Pipe Co. of Auburn. Before that he worked for Butler Construction, and later for Goodrich Construction.

He was a member of Oneonta American Legion Post 259, Oneonta Moose Lodge 465, and the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.

He is survived by his wife, Joan E. Thompson of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Patricia and Bruce Brown of Oneonta, Russell and Heather Thompson of Oneonta, William Thompson of Oneonta, Lucinda Thompson of Oneonta, Richard and Etta Cook of Worcester and John Cook of Davenport; three stepsisters, Margaret Finch, Norma Jean Wayman and Beatrice Woehrle, all of Oneonta; 15 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother and stepfather, Ellen and Charlie Woehrle.

A military memorial service will be conducted by the Oneonta American Legion Post 259, on Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 1 p.m., in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

There will be no prior calling hours, and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Russell H. Young

EATON — Russell H. Young, 75, of Eaton, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

He was born in Eaton on Dec. 11, 1924, the son of Charles and Grace (Wooton) Young.

He married Lorraine (Shepherd) Fraser on Feb. 3, 1961.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Navy.

For 30 years, Russell owned and operated Young's Sunoco in Eaton. After his retirement, he worked for State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville for 10 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 54, Munnsville.

Russell is survived by his wife, Lorraine Young of Eaton; a son, Stephen Fraser of Rochester; a daughter, Carol Chesser and her husband, Doug, of Oneonta; three grandchildren, Ginger Volpe and her husband, Fred, Geoffrey Chesser and Christopher Fraser; two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Volpe; three brothers, George Young of Eaton, Howard Young of Cazenovia and Raymond Young of Eaton.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Barker-Burgess Funeral Home, Cedar Street, Morrisville, with the Rev. Thomas Clark, pastor of the Eaton Community Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until service time on Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care, Inc. 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, N.Y. 13413.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Walter G. Turcza

ONEONTA — Walter G. Turcza, 82, of Oneonta, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1917, in Lambert, Pa., the son of Francisco and Anna (Zarneck) Turcza.

As a young boy, Walter moved to Poland, where he and his family experienced the atrocity of the Nazis. Both Walter and his brother became slaves of the Nazi regime.

Following the war, Walter moved back to the area and made his home with his uncle and aunt. He went to work for the Oneonta Grocery Co., and retired from there several years ago.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church.

He is survived by two sisters, Helen Blachut of Citrus Hts.,  Calif. and Anna Lesniak of Chicago, Ill.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elmer R. Tuttle

EDMESTON — Elmer R. Tuttle, 40, of Edmeston, died Friday, July, 7, 2000, at home.

He was born Aug. 28, 1959, in Cortland, the son of Raymond and Georgia (Schalfer) Tuttle.

He married Jean West, who survives.

He spent his childhood in the New Berlin, West Edmeston and South Otselic areas.

He worked in logging, as a mechanic and as a farmer.

He is survived by his mother, Georgia Tuttle of Cherry Valley; his children, Danie Tuttle, John West and Shannon Nestved, all of Edmeston; brothers and sisters, Raymond and Sharon Tuttle of Milford, Priscilla Allen of DeRuyter, Stewart Tuttle of New Berlin, Robert and Cherie Tuttle of Schenevus, Grace Tuttle of Oneonta and Howard Roe and Betty Tuttle of East Meredith; and many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by good friends Janice, George and Beada Coveny and Mickey and Andy Orzeck, all of New Berlin, and Ken Coveny of DeRuyter.

The funeral will be Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with Pastor John Busky of the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, officiating.

Burial will be Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours are Monday, July 10, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jack C. Gibson

CHERRY VALLEY — Jack C. Gibson, 78, of Cherry Valley, died Friday afternoon, July 7, 2000, at his home, Twin Ponds.

He was born on Feb. 27, 1922, in Greensburg, Pa. During World War II, he served his country as a Navy pilot.

For many years, Jack was an executive with United Parcel Service and for more than 30 years enjoyed his time in the Cherry Valley area.

He and his wife, Rozlyn, often attended the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Corine Gibson.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rozlyn E. Dunn, who died Aug. 26, 1996. He was also predeceased by his brother, William Gibson, who was killed in Europe while serving his country during World War II.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, this afternoon and evening, Monday, July 10, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Catherine M. Shaw

DELHI — Catherine M. Shaw, 95, of Delhi, died July 7, 2000, in Delhi.

She was born Sept. 7, 1904, in Bloomville, the daughter of Perry C. and Ida Shaw.

A lifelong area resident Miss Shaw was an accountant for General Motors Automobile Dealerships for more than 50 years in Delhi and Saranac Lake.

A very dear friend, Doreen Craig of Meridale, survives her.

Services will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2000, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Edward McNulty, of the Bovina Presbyterian Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Fred A. Seamon

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Fred A. Seamon, 76, of Hinds Road, died on Sunday, July 9, 2000, in his home.

Born on Jan. 4, 1924, in the town of Exeter, he was a son of the late Louis and Martha Domion Seamon.

A lifelong Exeter resident, he was educated in both Exeter and Schuyler Lake schools.

During World War II, he, with his brother, Harry Seamon, answered the call of the country by enlisting in the United States Army. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On April 15, 1944, he married Shirley Crist in  Texas.

Mr. Seamon owned and operated his own dairy farm in Exeter as well as working for Lancaster Development Corp. in Cobleskill, retiring in 1986. From 1960 to 1964, he was highway superintendent for the town of Exeter. He was instrumental in the building of the town garage.

He was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Hugick, Purcell, Shepardson American Legion Post #616, Richfield Springs.

Fred loved the outdoors and was an avid big-game hunter.

Surviving him besides his wife of 56 years, Shirley; are one son, Wayne, and his wife, Jean Seamon, of Exeter; three daughters and their husbands, Sherry and George Blauvelt of Port Richey, Fla., Dale and Kenneth Dyn of Exeter and Marsha and James Lewis of Helena, Mont.; nine brothers, Lee Seamon of Exeter, Devere Seamon of Richfield, Louis Seamon Jr. of Richfield, Floyd Seamon of Black River, Howard Seamon of Exeter, James Seamon, Edward Seamon and Grant Seamon, all of Richfield, and Merton Seamon of Sloansville; four sisters, Virginia Homa of West Winfield, Rose Zenner of Unadilla, Genevieve Spytko of Richfield and Elizabeth Collins of Warren; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Betty Seamon, in 1947; two sisters, Mabel Bond and Marguerite Palmer; and two brothers, Willis and Harry Seamon.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday (today) from 7 to 9 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Funeral and committal are private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders or the Richfield Springs Volunteer Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
