John L. Faucher

MASSENA — John L. Faucher, 68, of 243 E. Hatfield St., Massena, died July 9, 2000, in Massena.

He was born Jan. 23, 1932, in Massena, the son of Joseph Faucher and Rose (Chartier) Faucher.

He was married to Doris  White on Sept. 7, 1959, at St. Mary's Church by the Mgsr. Francis  White presiding.

He was educated in Massena schools.

After being discharged from the United States Navy, he started employment at Uhl Hall-Rich Construction during the construction of the Seaway in the accounting department. Following completion of the PASNY in 1969, he transferred to Blenheim-Gilboa Power Project in the Catskills as office facility manager. In 1983, he returned to Massena as operations and finance manager at PASNY, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1141, the Massena Elks Lodge BPOE #1702, he was a Past Exalted Ruler, New York State Elks Lodge chairman of Trustees.

John is survived by his wife, Doris; his mother, Rose Faucher of West Chazy; two daughters, Maureen A. Faucher of Massena and Ann E. Faucher of Barber, Mich.; one son, Daniel F. of Boston, Mass.; three sisters and three brothers, Roger J. of Lakeland, Fla., Rolland (Babe) J. of Morristown, Robert J. of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Mrs. Basil (Theresa) French of Brasher Falls, Mrs. Gary (Mary Ellen) Prosper of Fountain Springs, Ariz., and Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Grow of Richmond, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Joan Mittiga, on March 16, 2000; and one brother, Henry, in 1987.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. Massena Elks Lodge BPOE #1702 will pay their respects Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home. The Knights of Columbus Council #1141 will pay their respects at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred. Interment will be in St. Anne's Cemetery in Mooers Forks on July 13, 2000.

Richard I. Wolf

ONEONTA — A memorial service for Richard I. Wolf, 62, who passed away on June 10, 2000, will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2000, at St. James Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta, at noon with the Rev. Canon Mark R. Cole officiating.

Robert W. Jordan

ONEONTA — Robert Warren Jordan, 74, of Route 47, Oneonta, died Monday, July 10, 2000, unexpectedly in an automobile accident.

Born Oct. 12, 1925, in the town of Franklin, he was the son of Marion and Dwight Jordan.

He was married to Arvilla Kingsbury on Dec. 1, 1957, she predeceased him on May 12, 1987. He later married Florence C. Hait on May 30, 1993.

He graduated from Franklin High School. During World War II, Bob served with the United States Navy and was training to be a pilot. He attended Middlebury College, Vt. Upon discharge of the Navy he entered NYABC Breeding co-op, which is now GENEX. Bob bred cows in the Hancock, Oneonta and  Pennsylvania area for 37 years. In retirement he continued as an emergency/relief technician for GENEX and traveled many parts of Maine and New York as a technician. Bob's relationships with his farmer friends and his cows were important to him.

He was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, currently a trustee and a member of HUMM. Bob also enjoyed membership in the Elks Club and the National Rifle Association.

Bob loved to spend time in the woods, cutting wood and keeping a beautiful garden. He was a lover of nature and enjoyed camping and watching birds. Once a month during the summer he rallied with the Delaware County Campers at different locations. He loved to share the bounties from his garden and would offer a helping hand to anyone that needed him.

His wife, Flossie; three daughters, Patti Kelsey of Oneonta, Christina and Daniel Hromada of Guilford and Robin and Peter Conte of Worcester; two sons, David and Debbi Hassick and Michael and Rosemary Hassick, both of Oneonta; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren survive Bob. One brother, Kenneth and Adeline Jordan of Maryland; a sister-in-law, Ruby Kingsbury of Falls Church, Va.; an uncle, Ralph Jordan of Seal Beach,  Calif.; and three aunts, Agnes Jordan of California, Gertrude Stewart of Claremont and Marguerite Williams of Mount Upton also survive, as do stepchildren, Bev and John Rockefeller of Bloomville, Douglas Hait of Ottisville, Larry and Cindi Hait of Pine Plains and Ron and JoAnn Hait of Waterford; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Helen Daunn, predeceased him in 1991, and a grandson, Bobby Conte, in 1995.

Calling hours will be Thursday, July 13, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Family will be present in the evening to receive friends and relatives at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Cornell Avenue, Hobart. Funeral services will take place on Friday, July 14, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church, Maple Avenue, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Hobart United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Agnes F. Hawver

OTEGO — Mrs. Agnes F. Hawver, 93, of Otego, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Dec. 8, 1906, in Otego, the daughter of Almon B. and Myrtle Sarah (Enderlin) Fowler.

She married Ford M. Hawver on Aug. 19, 1930, in Otego. Mr. Hawver died April 12, 1973.

Agnes was a lifelong resident of Otego. She taught at area schools for several years.

Agnes was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church, the A.O. Fox Hospital Auxiliary Guild, the Otsego County Senior Citizens, the town of Otego Historical Society, the Otsego County Chapter Association for Retarded Children, the United Methodist Home Guild of Wyoming Conference, the Otego United Methodist Women, the Otego W.C.T. and past president and secretary for the Otsego County W.C.T.U., former president of the Oneonta District of the W.S.C.S. (now the United Methodist Women), former member of the Otego Susquehanna Valley Grange, former secretary for the Mary A. Broodfoot Bible Class at Otego United Methodist Church, the Otego Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, a 60-year plus member of the Oneonta Alumni Association of the State University College at Oneonta, disaster chairman in the village of Otego of the American Red Cross, and was the friendly service chairman of the Retired Teacher Association of Otsego County.

Agnes is survived by two grandchildren, Peter and Heather; and several cousins.

Agnes was predeceased by her son, Roger C. Hawver.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the Otego United Methodist Women care of Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 or the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in loving memory of Agnes F. Hawver.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Richard T. Birdsall

MORRIS — Richard Thomas (Tom) Birdsall, 52, of Morris, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

He was born in Sidney on April 5, 1948, the son of A. Richard and Kathryn (Benedict) Birdsall.

Tom was an auto mechanic and had lived in the Butternut Valley all of his life. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Hartwick Rod & Gun Club and had served as a New York State Hunter Safety Instructor for several years.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter.

He is survived by his parents, A. Richard and Kathryn Birdsall of Morris; a brother, David J. Birdsall and his wife, Diana, of Morris; a sister, Susan B. Kleinschmidtt and her husband, Tim, of Morris; two nieces and three nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kim Birdsall.

Memorial services will be Sunday, July 16, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Friends are asked to donate to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville in Tom's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Erma Shirey

LASCASSAS, Tenn. — Memorial services for Erma Shirey, 80, of Lascassas, Tenn., who died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Middle Tennessee Medical Center, will be 11 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale, N.Y.

A luncheon for all in attendance will be immediately following at Meridale Community Church.

She was the daughter of the late Ludvig and Mildred Wright Eichler and the widow of Edgar Shirey.

She is survived by sons, Dennis Shirey of Murfreesboro, Tenn., William Shirey of Richmond, Va., and Wayne Shirey of Lascassas, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A native of Meridale, she was a homemaker and attended Ward's Grove Baptist Church in Milton, Tenn.

Emma Webb

NEW BERLIN — Emma (Mrs. Harold) Webb passed over to be with her Lord on July 11, 2000, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 17, 1913, Emma was the daughter of Charles and Effie Cobb, growing up in the Pittsfield area. Emma graduated from Morris Central School in 1933.

On Oct. 13, 1935, Emma married her beloved husband, Harold.

Emma is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth  Jones of Norwich; her grandchildren, Tenna Wright (raised by Harold and Emma) of Norwich and Kathi Law of Alabama, Terri Butler, Dale Law and Mrs. George (Vicki) Prosser, all of Sherburne; as well as her great-grandchildren, Michael Knochenmus, Jennifer and Nichole Butler, Sara and Bradley Prosser and Barbara and Aaron Wright; sisters, Lena Cobb and Beatrice Card; and brother, Russell Cobb. Also surviving are Raymond Webb, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Webb and brothers-in-law. Emma had a special space in her heart for her niece, Sandra Nichols.

Emma has joined her loving husband, Harold, and daughter Barbara in heaven. She will continue on her loving grandmother way as she also joins her great-grandson, Adam.

Emma's most enjoyable times and greatest pleasure was spending time with her family and friends, as well as spending time outside working in her gardens. A very important part of Emma's life was the association with her church. For many years she was a Sunday school teacher. She also enjoyed helping out at the bazaar and other church functions.

Emma will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.

The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin on July 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Beverly Butler. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin or the American Cancer Fund.

Richard T. Birdsall

Norma A. Dowland

ONEONTA — Norma Alsine Dowland, 76, of Oneonta died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born April 17, 1924, in Oslo, Norway, the daughter of Aksel and Konstance (Saupstad) Adolfsen.

Norma worked in Norway from the age 16 to 22. She worked at a German hospital as a nurses' aide during World War II. She also worked in a box factory and a place that made shoes.

On May 21, 1947, Norma came to Ellis Island, New York City, from Stavangerfjord, Norway. After having lived in Connecticut, she moved to the Oneonta area and was a chef at the Oneonta Elks Club for 30 years.

She loved to knit. She made many sweaters and other gifts for her family. She also had a love for cats. Norma will be greatly missed by all.

Norma is survived by her three children, Ray Ekseth and his companion, Charlita Ryan, of Franklin, Esther Dowland of Oneonta and Rita Dowland and her companion, Dan Sherwood, of Coventryville; four grandchildren, Victor Bagnardi of Sarasota, Fla., Christopher Werkshage of  Pennsylvania, Tina Werkshage of  Pennsylvania and David Ekseth of Michigan; four stepbrothers, George Parsons of Colchester, Conn., Rick Parsons of Colchester, Conn., Neil Parsons of Oakdale, Conn., and Jimmy Parsons of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews in Norway.

Norma was predeceased by her brother, Wilfred Adolfsen, who was a ski instructor for the Norwegian Army and also worked for the underground resistance partisan; and a stepbrother, Bob Parsons of Norfolk, Va., in 1999.

A service to celebrate the life of Norma Alsine Dowland will be held on Monday, July 17, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, chaplain at the A.O Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Bristol, Conn.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Norma Alsine Dowland.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard R. Pinney

SIDNEY CENTER — Richard R. Pinney, 59, of Sidney Center, died peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

He was born in Poughkeepsie on May 10, 1941, the son of Robert and Mary Ellen (Hohener) Pinney.

He married Jill Perry on Aug. 17, 1984.

For the past 37 years, Rich was employed for At-A-Glance in Sidney, where he held a group leader's position.

A lifelong area resident, he was of the Methodist faith.

Rich was a member of the Sidney Sons of the American Legion, the Sidney Center Rod & Gun Club, the National Rifle Association, and an associate member of the Sidney Center Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Jill Pinney of Sidney Center; his children and their spouses, Stephen Pinney and his friend, Missy Benham, and her children of Sidney, Gerald and Holly Pinney of Bainbridge, Lynn Barzee of Syracuse, Dawn Pinney of South Korea, Debra and Rick Flemming of Carbondale, Pa., Mary Ellen Pinney of Fairfax, Va., Christina and Jake Madison of Apalachin and Kelly and Luke Derr of Elizabeth City, N.C.; his grandchildren, Sylisha Pinney, Barbara and Terry Pinney and Colyn and Kayla Madison; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, William and Donna Pinney of Sidney, Doug and Marlene Pinney of  Texas, Carol and Jim Golden of South New Berlin and Marge and Doug Tuckey of Homer; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Sidney Center Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad, the Sidney Center Rod & Gun Club or the Wilson Memorial Hospital Cardiac Care Unit.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
