Harold E. Hunt

MESA, Ariz. — Harold E. Hunt, 76, of Mesa, Ariz., and formerly of Worcester, N.Y., died Oct. 4, 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Almeda R. Hunt of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Marion A. Kumm of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, James E. Hunt of Waterford; and a brother, Paul E. Hunt of Worcester and Albany.

A memorial committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2000, at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding, pastor of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Military honors will be presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Local arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Grace H. Putnam

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Grace H. Putnam, 82, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and formerly of Worcester, N.Y., died Dec. 23, 1999.

She is survived by her brother, Paul E. Hunt of Worcester and Albany; a niece, Marion A. Kumm of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a nephew, James E. Hunt of Waterford.

A memorial committal service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2000, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating.

Local arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Robert W. Spinney

STAMFORD — Robert W. Spinney, 87, died in Stamford on Thursday, July 20, 2000.

He was born in West Medford, Mass. on Feb. 13, 1913, the son of Robert M. and Jessie E. (Crawley) Spinney.

He graduated from the Medford High School in 1930, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1935, with a bachelor's degree and Rutgers Graduate School of Education with master's degree in 1968. He became a licensed professional engineer in New York state in 1947.

He was employed at the Bell System reclamation plant at Tottenville, Staten Island, from 1936-1968, retiring as the Operation Manager except during the World War II when he was in the military. He served in the Army Chemical Warfare active duty from 1942-1946. He retired as a colonel. Before his service with the United States Army he served with the British.

He taught mathematics, physics, chemistry and science in the Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Ariz., and in the Willcox High School, Willcox, Ariz., from 1968-1974. Having served as chairman of the math and science departments.

He served as director of the Sulphur Springs Electric Co. from 1971-1989, and as president of the board and CEO from 1980-1989. He also served as a Director of the Arizona Electric Power Co. from 1973-1988, and as president of the board and CEO from 1985-1988, having been treasurer and chairman of the Finance Committee for several years before being president.

He is survived by his son, Richard B. Spinney of Stamford, and daughter-in-law, Bette Jayne; his sister, Alice Louise Droney of Medford, Mass.; as well as granddaughter, Candi R. Mattice of Stamford; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews and two nieces.

He was predeceased in death by his wife of 42 years, Earline, who died in 1983; his parents; brother, Carleton; and sister, Jessie Willett.

While living in Staten Island he served in various charitable and religious organizations. In Arizona he was active in Masonic activities and a member of Willcox Lodge No. 10 F&AM as well as numerous other Masonic bodies, many of which he had served as an officer. He was also a dual member of Masonic bodies in Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours or service.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

David C. Thayer

ILION — David C. Thayer, 67, of Spohn Road, Ilion, and formerly of the Cooperstown area, died Wednesday evening, July 19, 2000, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.

He was born on Jan. 28, 1933, in Pierstown, a son of the late Archie J. and Esther May (Stanton) Thayer.

He first married Florence E. Goodspeed on Sept. 20, 1952, in Reno, Nev. Florence died on March 21, 1984. He then married Lois Wart on June 15, 1997, in Hartwick.

Dave was raised in the Cooperstown area and devoted much of his life to farming as well as owning and operating his own logging company.

He survived by his wife of three years, Lois of Ilion; two daughters, Mrs. Sharon Hargrove and her husband, Kevin, of Laurens and Mrs. Dawn Stoodley and her husband, James, of Duanesburg; four sons, Ronald S. Thayer and his wife, Joan, of Grand Rapids, Mich., William C. Thayer of Virginia, Glen D. Thayer and his wife, Penny, of Hanford,  Calif., and Timothy J. Thayer and his fiancee, Lynn Ives, of Cooperstown; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Mrs. Harriet Smith, and her husband, Lyle, of Hartwick Seminary; two brothers, Robert N. Thayer and his wife, Frances, of Ilion and James S. Thayer and his wife, Henrietta, of New Berlin.

Dave was predeceased by his mother, Mrs. Esther May Thayer, who died Oct. 13, 1990; his father, Archie J. Thayer, who died Aug. 1, 1977; and a sister, Miss Marion Thayer, who died in 1945.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, chaplain for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating. A committal service and burial will follow in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until service time, when Dave's family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Grace W. Allsop

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Grace W. Allsop, 95, of Blackstone Blvd. and formerly of Hilltop Avenue, a foreign language professor, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Epoch Assisted Living at Laurelmead, Providence, one day before her 96th birthday.

Born in Providence, R.I., a daughter of the late Henry L. and Elizabeth (Bingham) Allsop, she lived in Oneonta, N.Y., for 39 years before returning to Providence in 1970.

She graduated from Classical High School, Providence, in 1921. She graduated, with summa cum laude honors, from Brown University, Providence, in 1925, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in French. From 1926-27, as an international exchange student, she studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. She received her master's of art from Brown University in 1927. She was awarded a Henry Sharpe Fellowship at Brown University 1927-1929.

Miss Allsop began her teaching career at Coker College, Hartsville, S.C., where she served as a professor of French and Spanish from 1929-1930. Her long and distinguished tenure at Hartwick College, Oneonta, N.Y., was from 1931-1970. During her 39 years there, she studied and traveled widely in Europe, Canada and Mexico. She was the recipient of an honorary doctorate in foreign languages from Hartwick College. She was a member of Phi Betta Kappa, the American Association of University Professors and the Modern Language Association.

She is survived by one niece. She is the sister of the late Elizabeth Leslie.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston, R.I., was private.

Memorial gifts to Volunteer Services for Animals, 27 Dryden Lane, Providence, R.I. 02904 will be appreciated.

Dorothy Van Alstine

DELHI — Dorothy B. Van Alstine, 81, of Delhi, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, in Hobart.

She was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Delhi, the daughter of Stanley and Flora (Butler) Bishop.

She was married to the late James Van Alstine on April 10, 1954, in Delhi. He predeceased her Sept. 11, 1992.

Mrs. Van Alstine worked as a secretary for Delaware County in Delhi, from 1953 until 1975.

She was a member of United Ministry Church of Delhi; American Legion Post #190 Ladies Auxiliary, Delhi; and Willmac Eastern Star, which represents Downsville, Walton and Delhi.

Survivors include: A sister, Ruth Frasier of Connecticut; niece, Loona Hitchcock of Connecticut and Kentucky; great-nephews, Keith Hitchcock of Kentucky and Donald Hitchcock of Connecticut; great-nieces, Sandra Hultman of Connecticut and Karen Nocera of Connecticut; great-nephews, Paul DiNoia of Connecticut and David DiNoia of Connecticut; cousins, Lil Hilson of Bovina, Edward Schiender of Oneonta and Betty Butler of Bloomville; several great-great-nieces and -nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will take place on Friday evening, July 21, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at United Ministry Church of Delhi, with the Rev. Daniel McCallister of Andes officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to United Ministry of Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Edward H. Mohar

SYRACUSE — Edward H. Mohar died unexpectedly but peacefully Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his home in Syracuse, at the age of 85.

He was born in Hibbing, Minn., the son of Ludwig and Christina (Kosir) Mohar. He moved to Oaksville at age 6, where his parents operated a farm.

He was a graduate of Cooperstown High School and was a certified optician in Syracuse until he volunteered in the Army. Following distinguished service in World War II, he owned several apartment complexes in Syracuse.

He is survived by a son, Ronald Mohar, and wife, Bing, of DeWitt, and one grandchild; a stepson, Richard Haggett, of Syracuse; a brother, Adolf G. (Duffy) Mohar, of Wildwood Fla.; and two sisters, Christina Henry of Nashport, Ohio, and Anne Leech of Oneonta, with whom he was especially close.

Edward was predeceased by two older brothers, Ludwig and Anthony Mohar; and by a sister, Marie Eggers.

In accordance with his wishes, he was laid to rest at the Onondaga County Veteran's Cemetery on July 18, near his brother Ludwig. The Honor Guard for his burial was provided by the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum.

Edward was a first lieutenant in the World War II in command of an anti-aircraft automatic weapons platoon. He served with the 452nd AAA AX Battalion in Europe. His service decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the American Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Service Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. After his unit's deployment from the United States to England, he took part in the invasion of France at Normandy in 1944.

Following the invasion, his unit was reassigned to Gen. Patton's newly organized Third Army. Edward served in all of the Third Army's campaigns including Northern France, the Ardennes ("Battle of the Bulge"), the Rhineland and Central Europe.

Lt. Mohar's platoon directly supported Gen. Patton's surprise assault across the Rhine River at Oppenheim, Germany, in 1945. His platoon was also instrumental in the defense of the bridge constructed at Oppenheim following the evening river assault. In particular, his platoon survived intense enemy shelling and defended the bridge from numerous air attacks that downed five aircraft and damaged another.

He will always be remembered as a kind and generous man devoted to his country and to his family, caring for his elderly parents until their deaths and his elder brother Ludwig and special friend Francis Hart.

James F. Weidman

COLUMBUS — James F. Weidman, 61, of Columbus, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, in the town of Columbus.

He was born Sept. 18, 1938, in Guilford, son of Francis and Muriel (Camp) Weidman.

His childhood was spent in the Edmeston and New Berlin areas.

He attended Edmeston Central School.

He married Brenda Izard on Nov. 2, 1957. He worked as a carpenter, dairy farmer and horse trainer.

He is survived by his children, James Martin Weidman of Vernon, Sheri Pasternak of Poughkeepsie, and Jody Weidman, Wendy and James Rifanburg and Sheila Randall, all of New Berlin; his grandchildren, Lauren, Caitlyn, Jake, Kody, Morgan, Jamie and Calvin; brothers and sisters, Betty M. Lindholm of Sherburne, Barbara Izard of South New Berlin, Bernice and John Christian of West Winfield, Bonnie and Larry Sullivan of Edmeston and John and Nanci Weidman of Laurens.

He also leaves several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by one sister, Beverly Figger.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Columbus Corners Cemetery, Columbus, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Burial will take place in Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Barbara Y. Leach

LOCKPORT — Barbara York Leach, 74, of Lockport, passed away Friday, July 21, 2000, in Lockport Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was a 1943 graduate of Lockport High School and graduated in 1946 from Buffalo General Hospital as a registered nurse. She worked at Lockport Hospital from 1946 to 1949 and from 1953 to 1960, she was employed as an office nurse.

She was active in the Niagara County 4-H program and was a 4-H volunteer leader in dogs, horses and sewing.

She was predeceased by her first husband, J. Gerald York Jr. She and her husband, Almon E. Leach, were married March 4, 1984.

She is survived by three daughters, Kristen York (Joseph) Gerling of West Grove, Pa., Wendy S. York of Otego and Holly York (Alexander) Schotz of Wilson; one son, John G. York of  Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, Andrew and Shelly Gerling; one great- grandson, Brandon Gerling; one sister, Alice Emerson of Bogart, Ga.; and several nephews.

Friends may call Sunday, July 23, 2000, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lange Funeral Home Inc., 186 East Ave., Lockport.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 24, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 100 Genesee St., Lockport.

Memorials may be made to the J. Gerald York Jr. and Barbara York Leach Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport, N.Y. 14094 or Planned Parenthood of Niagara County.

Lillian V. Gardner

ONEONTA — Lillian Victoria Gardner, 74, died in Oneonta on Wednesday, June 28, 2000.

She was born in Webster, Pa., on Dec. 11, 1925, the daughter of Peter and Anna Haburchak of Donora, Pa., who predeceased her.

She was a member of St. Dominick Roman Catholic Church in Donora, Pa. She graduated from Donora High School. She lived her life in Donora, where she was a loving mother and homemaker. She was married to Delbert Ross Gardner Sr., who predeceased her in 1980.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Gardner and his wife, Michelle, of Oneonta and Delbert Ross Gardner Jr. and his wife, Desiree, of Kissimmee, Fla.; six grandchildren, Gretchen Gardner Gabos and her husband, Charles Gabos, of Pittsburgh, Pa., John David Gardner of New York, Nicholas Gardner of Oneonta, and Ross, Ashley and Madison Gardner of Kissimmee, Fla.; and a great-grandson, Ryan Gardner Gabos, of Pittsburgh, Pa.

She is also survived by her brother, John Haburchak, of Monongahela, Pa.; her sister Hellen Kruczek of Donora, Pa.; her sister Paula Stefko of Orlando, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Haburchak, of Baltimore, Md.

Her funeral was July 1, 2000, in Donora, Pa.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Erin 'Katie' Scott

UNADILLA — Erin "Katie" Scott, 8, of Unadilla, died unexpectedly on Friday, July 21, 2000, in Berlin, Md.

She was born Nov. 5, 1991, in Cooperstown, to Kevin and Eileen Pitsch Scott.

Katie was a student at Unadilla Elementary School, having just finished the third grade.

She rode horseback at Cross Creek Stables, Sidney, and danced at the Class Act School of Dance, Sidney. Katie also played on the Unadilla Girls minor league softball team.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney.

Katie enjoyed swimming and singing and taking care of smaller children. Katie loved her dog, Teddie Girl, and her cat, Socks.

She is survived by her parents, Kevin and Eileen Rose-Scott of Unadilla; two sisters, Rachel and Mariah Scott of Unadilla; one brother, Brendan Scott of Unadilla; paternal grandmother, Laurie Scott of Brooklyn; paternal grandfather, John Scott of Franklin; maternal grandmother, Nancy H. Pitsch of Sacramento,  Calif.; two uncles and family, Wayne and Yumiko Scott and their son, John, of Franklin and Erik Scott of Oneonta; four aunts and families, Laureen Scott-Treacy and Frank Treacy of Oneonta, Jennifer Tachera of Sacramento,  Calif., godmother, Denise Pitsch and Buck Gee and their children, Adam, Todd and Elizabeth of Palo Alto,  Calif., and Erica and Phil Calise and their children, Jared and Sophia of West Milford, N.J.; godfather, Michael Scott of Denver,  Colo.; cousin, Chris Sheffer; and several cousins, family and friends.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating. Friends may call Tuesday, July 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Carol Truesdell

ANDES — Carol Jean Merwin Truesdell, 61, of Andes, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at home in the company of her family.

Carol was born June 9, 1939, in Pine Hill, the daughter of Clarence and Helen Price Merwin.

She married Herbert William Truesdell on Oct. 4, 1957, and they lived in Pine Hill two years before they moved to Andes.

During her youth, she worked summer jobs as a baby sitter and a soda fountain clerk at resort houses.

Carol was a founding member and member of the Andes Emergency Squad for 18 years and was a training officer.

In March 1984, she became an American Red Cross-certified CPR instructor and in May 1986 an EMT instructor.

She was a nurse's assistant at Countryside Care Center for 13 years and part-time ambulance technician with Decker Ambulance for five years.

Carol will be remembered for her dedicated service to Andes and the greater community.

Surviving are her husband, Herbert W. of Andes; two sons, Herbert William Jr. of Delhi and Gene Douglas of Dickerson, Md.; two grandchildren, Shelby Lynn and Jeremy Scott Truesdell of Dickerson, Md.; a sister, Shirley F. Smith of Pine Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Douglas.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Andes United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Andes Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes on Monday where the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials in the name of Carol Truesdell to Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi, N.Y. 13753 or Andes Emergency Squad, Andes, N.Y. 13731 would be appreciated.
