Nola M. Cook

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Nola M. Cook, 66, passed away Friday, July 21, 2000, at St. Peters Hospital, Albany.

She was born Aug. 3, 1933, in the town of Springfield, the daughter of Russell and Esther (Gray) Manley.

On Dec. 22, 1951, she married Richard L. Cook in Fort Plain. He survives.

Mrs. Cook was a lifelong resident of Springfield.

She was a postal clerk in East Springfield for many years until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center, the Otsego Chapter of DAR and a charter member of the Springfield Fire Department Auxiliary.

Besides her husband, Richard L. Cook of East Springfield, she is survived by a daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Earl Moyer, of Canajoharie; two sisters, Marion Westerman of Springfield Center and Laraine Empie of Frankfort; two brothers, Neil Manley of Springfield Center and Carl Manley of Albany; three grandchildren, Rebecca and Adrianne Moyer of Canajoharie and Angela Cook of Fort Plain; two great-grandchildren, Steven Cook and Cheyenne Rockwell of Fort Plain; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Raymond Cook, in April 1987.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with Fr. Norman Sieme officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Calling hours will be on Monday, July 24, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mrs. Cook's memory may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Richard L. Gay

WALTON — Richard L. Gay, 62, of RD #2, died unexpectedly on Saturday evening, July 22, 2000, in the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

He was born on May 25, 1938, in Ilion, son of the late Clyde and Dora Hagadorn Gay.

Richard was raised and educated in Ilion. When he left high school, he entered the United States Marine Corps where he was honorably discharged in 1958.

On Sept. 29, 1963, he married Barbara Huyck in the Exeter Center United Methodist Church. In 1978, he and his family moved to Walton coming from Richfield Springs.

He worked for the S. J. Bailey & Sons Furniture Manufacturers in Walton, retiring in 1998.

Dick was a man with a strong will and a good sense of values who loved his family first and foremost.

Surviving him besides his wife of 36 years, Barbara, are two daughters and their husbands, Traci and John Dilello of Laurens and Dawn and Vern Hall of Gastonia, N.C.; a brother, Clyde Gay of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Florence Gintley of Largo, Fla.; six grandchildren, Johnathan, Jordan Richard and Jenna Rose Dilello of Laurens and Brandi and Brittany Swartwout and Zachary Hall, all of Gastonia, N.C.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Ann Gay in 1964; and two sisters, Jeanine Barin and Ina Sullivan.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Exeter Center Cemetery, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Walton Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

E. Joseph Bugbee

SIDNEY — E. Joseph Bugbee, 71, of Sidney, passed away Monday morning, July 17, 2000, at the home of his son, Peter, 1 New St., Sidney.

Joseph was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Canandaigua. He was the son of the late Glenn and Gertrude Fallon Bugbee.

On July 5, 1952, he married Ann Adams in Canandaigua.

Mr. Bugbee was a graduate of Syracuse University College of Law in 1952. For several years, he was an attorney for the Bendix Corp., retiring from the Jacksonville, Fla., division.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann Bugbee of Sidney; three sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Mary Bugbee of Sidney, Paul and Stacy Bugbee of Pleasantville and Patrick Bugbee of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Steve Laurion of Menomonee Fall, Wis., and Polly and Frank Garrison of Odessa; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Glenn Bugbee of Canandaigua and James and Mary Jane Bugbee of Shortsville; two sisters, Azelee Bastian of Macedon and Corinne Sutton of Canandaigua; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Roy Bugbee; and sister, Marie Miller.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2000, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of his family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the charity of one's choice.

Dorothy Desbiens

WALTON — Dorothy B. Desbiens, formerly of Walton, a resident of the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, died on Friday, July 21, 2000, at Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

Dorothy was born on Feb. 1, 1916, in Hawthorne, N.J., the daughter of John and Barbara Hoyle.

She married Joseph Desbiens on Sept. 17, 1938, in Hawthorne, N.J. He predeceased her on Jan. 28, 1987. She was also predeceased by a sister, Evelyn; and daughter, Barbara.

Dorothy formerly worked at His 'n' Hers clothing store and was a teacher's aide at Townsend Elementary School.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Walton.

She was a loving and gentle lady who loved to knit sweaters for children and always had a smile for everyone. She enjoyed gardening and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her son, William, and his wife, Dorothy of Glens Falls; daughter, Beverly Gruver, and her husband, Stephen of Otego; a sister, Marie Marshall of Hawthorne, N.J.; grandchildren, Theresa Wicks, Ann Curley, Jacqueline Papuzza, Joseph Gruver and Barbara Burnham; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Walton, with the Rev. Eugene F. Willis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in George  Washington Memorial Park, Paramas, N.J.

Contributions may be made to St. John's Church in Dorothy's memory.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton.

Dylan J. Seward

SIDNEY — Dylan J. Seward, 10, of Sidney, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Sept. 29, 1989, in Oneonta, the son of John Seward and Bethany Fairbairn.

Dylan was a student at Sidney Elementary School, Sidney. He was an active young man who loved exploring the outdoors.

He is survived by his father, John Seward, and mother, Bethany Fairbairn of Sidney; sisters, Katelyn Seward and Emily Kristine Fairbairn of Sidney; grandparents, Sharlene Billek of Davenport, Adam B. Billek of Delhi, Burton R. Fairbairn Sr. of Rochester and John W. and JoAn Seward of Georgia; friend-grandfather, Robert S. Smith of Davenport; great-grandparents, Dorothy and William York of Oneonta and Mary Seward of Milford; as well as aunts, Tina Shayne Moshier of Andes, Sandy McKee of DeLancey and Cassie Carmichael of Georgia; an uncle, William A. Seward of Georgia; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by great-grandparents, Rexford and Wilma Oliver and Gisela Seward; and an uncle, B. Richard Fairbairn Jr.

Calling hours will take place today, Monday, July 24, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Laura Sdrewski

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Laura Stella Sdrewski, 84, of Walnut Street, died on Monday morning, July 24, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Oct. 29, 1915, in New Haven, Conn., daughter of the late Joseph and Stella Saloman.

Laura came to the town of Warren from New Haven in 1924, and was educated in Warren and Richfield Springs schools.

On Nov. 8, 1944, she married Leo F. Sdrewski in Blessed Sacrament Church, Springfield Center. After a loving union of 49 years Mr. Sdrewski passed away on Dec. 10, 1993.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, her family came first. She will always be remembered for the warm cookies and apple pies that no one could top.

She was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, and the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens.

Surviving her are three daughters, Donna and her husband, Robert H. Fenton, of Plano,  Texas, Cynthia Sdrewski of Vienna, Va., and Mary and her husband, Gary Weingates, of Richfield Springs; a sister; Helen and her husband, John Duga, of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren; Robert W. Fenton of Plano,  Texas, and Lisa Marie Weingates, Laura Mae Weingates and Gary Martin Weingates, all of Richfield Springs; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrance Healy officiating. Interment will follow on St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph's Church or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Louise C. Shaul

SCHUYLER LAKE — Louise C. Shaul, 91, of state Highway 28, died on Sunday evening, July 23, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1908, in Ovid, daughter of the late Irving and Anna Freeman Clarke.

Louise was raised in Ovid where she was educated.

On Aug. 4, 1924, she married Jay Shaul in Penn Yan, a loving and devoted union of 50 years until his passing on Jan. 26, 1975.

Mrs. Shaul had worked for Shurkatch Fishing Tackle in Richfield Springs, retiring in 1961.

She was a member of the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens and the Schuyler Lake Home Bureau.

Surviving her are one son, Lawrence Shaul of Schuyler Lake; three daughters and their husbands, Dolores and Reno Cotteli of Vallejo,  Calif., Eleanor and Richard Evans of West Windfield and Josephine and Reinhardt Burdt of Richfield Springs; nine grandchildren; many great and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Shaul; a brother, Charles Clarke and a sister, Cora Troutman.

Funeral service will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Interment will follow in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, the Schuyler Lake First Responders or the Richfield Springs Bassett Healthcare Clinic Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Franklyn Springer

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Franklyn David Springer, 88, formerly of Church Street, died on Sunday morning, July 23, 2000, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Bass, Pine Grove Road, East Herkimer, where he has resided for the past year and half.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1911, in the town of Warren, son of the late David Richard and Luella Mumford Springer.

A lifelong area resident he was educated in Richfield Springs and was a graduate of Syracuse University in 1932, with a degree in business administration.

An honorably discharged United States Army veteran, he served our country overseas in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

On May 29, 1939, he married Sylvia L. Iver in the Presbyterian Church, Richfield Springs, a loving and devoted union of 59 years until her passing on March 1, 1999.

Franklyn along with his brother were co-owners of Springer Inc. located in Richfield Springs. He retired from the business in 1980. Upon his retirement he and his wife had resided in Leesburg, Fla., where he was a member of the Morrison Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, past president of the Richfield Springs Central School Board, a member of Richfield Springs Lodge #482 F.&A.M., a member and past president of the National Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association, the Richfield Springs Rotary Club, and the Ziyara Shrine Temple, Utica.

Surviving are his son, David J. Springer and his wife, Carol, of Ilion; one grandson, David J. Springer Jr. of Richfield Springs; a stepson, David  White of Ilion; a sister-in-law, Bernice Springer of Richfield Springs; a niece, Lodena Snyder; and a nephew, William Springer.

Funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Church of Christ Uniting, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor, officiating. Interment will take place on Monday, July 31, at 11 a.m. in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to the Church of Christ Uniting Memorial Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jordan Wooden

ONEONTA — Jordan Alexander Wooden, infant son of D.J. and Kimberly Wooden of Oneonta, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born July 22, 2000.

Survived by his parents, D.J. and Kimberly (Yerdon) Wooden of Oneonta; one brother, Bryce Wooden at home; maternal grandmother, Alana Craven and her companion, David Ackerman of Oneonta; maternal grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. David Yerdon of Cherry Valley; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Bielawa of Cooperstown; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Wooden Jr. of  Washington, D.C., and Mr. and Mrs. Allen George of Margate, Fla.; paternal great-grandmother, Flossie Yerdon of Cherry Valley; four uncles, Kevin Yerdon and his daughter, Emily, of Oneonta, Wayne George of Binghamton, Michael Wooden of  Washington, D.C., and Thomas Wooden Jr. of the state of Maryland; and many other relatives whose life Jordan touched.

A private funeral service will be held Thursday, July 27, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends and relatives may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Anne M. Cooper

ONEONTA — Anne M. Cooper, 86, of Oneonta, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 21, 1913, in South Kortright, the daughter of Charles and Blanche (Swantak) Kasmer.

Anne was first married to Robert K. Hennessey, who died on April 26, 1976. She then married Joseph T. Super on Feb. 16, 1980, and he died on May 10, 1990. On Oct. 8, 1995, she married David S. Cooper.

Anne was a receptionist for Drs. Leon and John Wayman. Before that, she held various other positions including working at Brackett's Bookstore.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Anne enjoyed playing bridge and golf, along with being an avid Notre Dame football fan.

She is survived by her husband, David S. Cooper of Oneonta; and his family, three brothers and sisters-in-laws, Steven and Alice Kasmer of Roxbury, Joseph and Shirley Doroski of Grand Gorge and Tony and Betsy Doroski of Hood River, Ore.; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother and a sister, John and Dorothy Kasmer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

There will be no calling hours, and memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edward J. Selan

FLY CREEK — Edward J. (Ted) Selan, 87, of Fly Creek, died late Monday evening, July 24, 2000, at his home.

He was born on March 4, 1913, in Sheboygan, Wis., a son of Michael and Mary (Remitz) Selan.

He married Inabelle (Tiny) Truax on March 23, 1937, in Cooperstown.

At 8 years of age, Ted and his family moved to the Fly Creek area, where Ted attended the Fly Creek Valley District School. He was employed in various positions locally as well as Remington Rand in Ilion. In 1942, he began a 33-year career with Remington Arms in Ilion, retiring in 1975.

Ted was raised in the Catholic faith and attended the Fly Creek United Methodist Church.

He was a former member of the Twenty-Five Year Club at Remington Arms and enjoyed collecting antique clocks and furniture.

He was especially fond of flower gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Tiny of Fly Creek; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jerry and Phyllis Selan of Cooperstown and Randy Selan of Fly Creek; two grandchildren, Ben Selan of Centerville, Va., and Lindsey Selan of Fly Creek; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Frank and Polly Selan and Barney and Bernice Selan, all of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Mary Ann Selan of Perry, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ted was predeceased by two brothers, Roman Selan, who died Jan. 13, 1969, and Michael Selan, who died July 15, 1993.

A private committal service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family on Friday, July 28, 2000, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
