Beulah M. Beams

ONEONTA — Mrs. Beulah M. Beams, 81, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Leland and Maude (Kenny) Coe.

She married Gordon H. Beams on Oct. 5, 1940, in Oneonta. He died Feb. 12, 1999.

Beulah graduated from Otego High School. She worked at Woolworth's and at Bendix Corp. during the war, and worked for 20 years at the S&H Green Stamp Store in Oneonta.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Beulah is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by an infant son, Donald Bruce Beams.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. William Moorby will officiate.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will be present on Tuesday evening, Aug. 1, 2000, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

It has been has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY, 13820 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern New York Chapter, Leatherstocking Branch, PO Box 1364, Oneonta, NY, 13820, in loving memory of Beulah M. Beams.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

William S. Connolly

DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa. — William S. Connolly, 88, of Douglassville, Pa., formerly of Stamford, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Reading Hospital in  Pennsylvania.

He was born in Union Hill, N.J., the son of the late William F. and Dorothea K. (Krellwitz) Connolly.

He was a 1928 graduate of Tenafly High School, Tenafly, N.J., and a 1948 graduate of Rutgers Law School in New Jersey.

He married Frances C. O'Connell, who died May 8, 1998.

He was owner/operator of his own business called "William J. Connolly" where he worked as an insurance representative for a number of insurance companies for 20 years, retiring in 1973.

He was a life member of Livingston West Orange Lodge of Masons, Livingston, N.J., where he was a mason of the 32nd degree. He was a life member of the Salaam Temple of the Shriners of Livingston, N.J., and a past officer of the Stamford Rotary Club, Stamford. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Stamford.

Survivors include a son, George A. Connolly of Douglassville, Pa., a daughter, Deborah N. Albanese of Denville, N.J.; brothers, Ralph Connolly of Orange County,  Calif., and Marc A. Connolly of Villanova, Pa.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church, Stamford. Friends may call at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc. in West Reading, Pa., is in charge of arrangements.

Darwin Faulkner

ARKVILLE — Darwin Faulkner, 73, of Arkville, passed peacefully from this life int Arkville, with his family by his side, on Saturday, July 29, 2000.

He was born May 27, 1927, in Oneonta, to Darwin and Iris (Munson) Faulkner.

He served in the Korean Conflict as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a dairy and produce farmer in the Halcott area and in Farmville, Va., before moving back to Arkville.

He was a member of the Middletown American Legion Post #216. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was well-known for his homemade applesauce and produce, which he shared with family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Jed and Jon Faulkner, of Farmville, Va.; two daughters, Debbie Burchard of Arkville and Heidi Archibald of Margaretville; a brother, Fred Faulkner of Kingston; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Audrey Johnson, who died in November 1993.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Halcott Methodist Church, Halcott Center, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.

Burial will be in the Halcott Cemetery, Halcott Center.

The family will be in attendance Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hyne Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions in Darwin's memory can be made to the Halcott Methodist Church, Halcott Center.

Sjouk Halma

SCHENEVUS — Mrs. Sjouk Halma, 80, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2000, at her home.

She was born March 5, 1920, in Sint Annaparochie, The Netherlands, the daughter of Jan and Antje (Groenveld) Couperus. She married Sierk Halma on Oct. 2, 1945, in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.

The Halmas moved to the United States in 1957 and have resided in Schenevus since 1985.

Besides her husband, Sjouk is survived by a son, Marten Jan Halma, and his partner, Scott Robert Way of Poughquag; a daughter, Anna Maaike Smith-Halma, and her husband, Martin Lawrence Smith of Sharon Springs; grandchildren, Juliana Lee Smith and Lucas Blaise Smith of Sharon Springs; a sister-in-law, Jozina Anna Couperous-DeLooff of Leewaarden, The Netherlands; a brother-in-law, Pieter Holwerda of Blija, The Netherlands; lifelong close friends, Durk and Sietske DeJong of Laurens; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased last year by a brother, Epeus Gerardus Couperus of Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.

During the occupation of The Netherlands by German forces in WW II, Sjouk took part in underground resistance work by serving as a courier, carrying important secret documents by bicycle from one location to another.

Sjouk was an accomplished textile artist. Her creative talents included designing, spinning, weaving, knitting and cross-stitching. She crafted beautiful artwork that was displayed at the Artisan Shop in Oneonta as well as in New York City galleries and various other places.

She was a member of the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts in Oneonta.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., in Cherry Valley.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Sjouk's life will be held Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at 11 a.m. at "Us Boskhus," 155 Vaider Road, Schenevus. Please, no floral offerings or memorial contributions.

Sjouk's caring for all who were dear to her and especially her devotion to her grandchildren will always be remembered. Her love will forever embrace them.

Arrangements are by the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Mildred E. Harrington

WEST BURLINGTON — Mildred E. Harrington, 98, formerly of West Burlington, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born Nov. 3, 1901, in  Jefferson, Schoharie County, the daughter of Lillie (Clapper) and Isaac Wayman, the youngest of six children.

She married Carl L. Harrington on June 30, 1920, in the family home, Snowden Hill, in the town of Hartwick. They lived in West Burlington for 70 years before her husband's death on June 14,1992.

Her home was her castle. She was an excellent cook and was happy keeping everything spotless. An accomplished musician, she played the piano for Sunday school at the West Burlington Church (now Pathfinder Village). She stayed in her home in West Burlington until June 1995 when poor health forced her to Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin. There, her quiet, "make the best of it" attitude gave her strength to adjust and become a content and popular resident.

No words can express the family's gratitude for the wonderful care and comfort Mildred received at Chase Nursing Home.

She was an active member of Burlington Methodist Church for many years.

She is survived by her devoted daughter and family; Elna and Peter Virtell of New Berlin; a grandson, Mark Harrington Virtell of Freeville; a "like-a-daughter," Janet Griffiths Myers of West Winfield; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Francis Harrington of Burlington Flats and Mrs. Lysle Harrington of Cooperstown; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. William Highfield and the Rev. Beverly Butler officiating.

Burial will follow at Burlington Flats Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider the Chase Nursing Home Memorial Fund or the Methodist church in either Burlington Flats or New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Rev. Richard C. Hughes

ANDES — The Rev. Richard C. Hughes, 73, of Andes, longtime Delhi- and Andes-area resident, died unexpectedly Friday, July 28, 2000, at Albany Medical Center.

The son of Archie L. and Bertha V. (Griswold) Hughes, he was born May 15, 1927, in Moravia and grew up in the Oneonta area where he graduated high school, later receiving a business degree from the State University at Albany

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he married Marie C. Balfoort on April 8, 1950, at the First Baptist Church, Oneonta. Marie died Nov. 30, 1994.

A financial secretary, Dick was a longtime employee of the State University system at Oneonta, Fredonia and Delhi, retiring in 1981.

Certified as a licensed lay minister by the American Baptist Churches of New York state, he served as pastor of the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church for 15 years until retiring to spend winters in Florida.

Dick was an active member of the Delhi First Baptist Church, where he served a choir director. He was a past president of the Upstate Home for Children in Milford; served in the Delhi Fire Department and Emergency Squad and played trombone in both the department band and for musical productions in the Delhi College Orchestra. He was also a past master and active leader in Boy Scout Troop 33, Delhi.

Surviving are his fiancιe, Leigh Infield, Andes; two sons, Dr. James R. (Kimberlee) Hughes, Hilton Head, S.C. and Thomas R. (Deb) Hughes, Weedsport; three daughters, Ruth H. Whitbeck, Delhi, Kathy A. (Joseph) Bilz, Laurens, and Mary A. (Richard) Maxey, Delhi; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Raymond Hughes, of Merritt Island, Fla.; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson.

Dick will be missed by many friends and loved ones whom he considered as his family.

Friends are invited to call today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the First Baptist Church, Delhi, by the Rev. Daniel McCollister, of Andes.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or the Delhi Fire Department.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Gerald L. Lane

LAURENS — Gerald L. "Gary" Lane, 46, of Laurens, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 22, 1963, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Gary served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era.

Prior to a serious automobile accident several years ago, which rendered him paralyzed, he worked in the heath-care profession.

A 26-year area resident, Gary was a avid outdoorsmen, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also fond of bluegrass music, and participated in many bluegrass festivals.

He is survived by his mother, Millie (Conway) Lane, of Jacksonville, Fla., his father, Ernest L. Lane, and his stepmother, Dorothy Hyder-Lane of Middletown, R.I.; his sisters, Zadell Yvonne Rung, of Keizer, Ore., and Zoa Celleste Weber of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; along with four nieces, two nephews and many area friends.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen D. Fournier, pastor of the Milford Center Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, P.O. Box 55, Milford, Mass., 01757.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home. Oneonta.

Jennette H. Marble

MOUNT VISION — Mrs. Jennette H. Marble, 80, of Mount Vision, died early Saturday morning, July 29, 2000, at her home.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1919, in the Harrison Homestead at Blood Mills, a daughter of and Edna (Lane) Harrison. She married Sherman D. Marble on Sept. 3, 1941, at the Harrison Homestead. He died Feb. 17, 1998.

Jennette was raised in Mount Vision and was salutatorian of the Laurens High School Class of 1938. She then went on to graduate from secretarial school and was employed for a brief time by an attorney's office and a feed store in Oneonta. She and her husband purchased the dairy farm in Mount Vision in 1942, where they would spend the rest of their lives.

Throughout her married years, Jennette devoted her life to taking care of her family and was active in the operation of the dairy farm. She sold eggs, helped out during the haying season and greatly enjoyed vegetable gardening.

She was a lifelong and vital member of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church where throughout the years she taught Sunday School and served on various committees. She took an equally active role in the former Otego Valley Grange.

Jennette is survived by two sons, Dean S. Marble and Kim VanDeusen of Mount Vision, and Dale R. Marble and his wife, Jeanne, of Redford, Mich; five grandchildren, Brad Marble, Caitlin Marble, Amber Marble and Karlyn VanDeusen, all of Mount Vision, and Brianna Marble of Redford, Mich.; her twin brother, Dwight Harrison of Mount Vision; one sister-in-1aw, Mrs., Vivian Harrison of Mount Vision; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and three special caregivers, Molly, Stan and Laurie Paddleford, all of Mount Vision.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Mount Vision United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mount Vision Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. when Jennette's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the of form of memorial gifts may be made to the Mount Vision Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Vision, N.Y. 13810 or the Mount Vision United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 576, Mount Vision, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

I. Charles Plaia

SIDNEY CENTER — Ignatius Charles Plaia, 79, of Sidney Center, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2000, at home.

He was born June 19, 1921, in Brooklyn, to the late Peter and Marian Peasell Plaia.

Charlie served his country in the United State Marine Corps during World War II.

He married Rose Byrnes on June 15, 1979, in Port  Jefferson.

He was a supervisor for Cerro-Wire in Queens when he retired.

Charlie was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney and served as Cub Scout leader for Pack 88. He was a past board member of Joshua House, Sidney. He was a family care provider for Broome Development Center for three years.

Charlie also wrote the Sidney Center news for the TriTown News.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Plaia, Sidney Center; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth Hemmendinger, and David Hemmendinger and Frances Driscoll, of Long Island; three daughters and a son-in-law, Linda Hemmendinger, Long Island, Diane Hemmendinger and Richard Bressler, Long Island, Lisa Hemmendinger, Sidney Center; four grandchildren, Brianna Nicole Hemmendinger, David Hemmendinger, Devin Bressler and Jason Hemmendinger; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 4 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Roy K. Swatling

FLY CREEK — Roy K. Swatling, 82, of Red Onion Farm in Fly Creek died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Roy was born on May 30, 1918, in Schenectady, the son of Roy J. and Florence (Kurth) Swatling. He grew up in Albany, graduated from the Milne School and attended the State College of Albany.

He married Elizabeth Schroeder on March 7, 1942, in Albany.

Roy enlisted in the service in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps, mostly in Alaska, throughout World War II. He was discharged with the rank of major in 1946.

Roy owned and operated several retail fuel-oil businesses throughout the area, including Swatling-Peattie and Swatling Petroleum in Herkimer, Bauder Oil in Fort Plain and Jensen-Baldwin Oil in Cherry Valley and Cooperstown.

He served on the Cooperstown Central School Board of Education for many years and had a principal role in the construction of the new high school in the late 1960s. He was a member of the VFW, the Mohican Club and was a Fly Creek fire commissioner for several years.

Roy is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Susan, of Hamilton, Mass.; son, Michael and his companion, Sandra Bridger, of Milford; son, Peter, of Fly Creek; daughter, Barbara and her husband, Hector Griswold of Hopewell, N.J.; and son, Thomas, and his wife, Kristi, of Fly Creek. His grandchildren are Joshua, Amanda, Michael, Rachael and Kala Swatling; Matthew and Katherine Griswold; and Samantha and Jennifer Swatling.

The Swatling family wants to acknowledge the outstanding care and compassion provided by the staff at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

There will be no calling hours.

A celebration of Roy's life will be held at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m., with Father John Rosson officiating. The family extends an invitation to all those who knew Roy to attend this service.

A donation in Roy's memory may be made to the Scholarship Fund, VFW Post No. 7128, 60 Main St., Cooperstown, in lieu of flowers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
