Alice M. Wilber

GOODLETTESVILLE, Tenn. — Alice M. Wilber, 72, of Goodlettesville, Tenn., formerly of Franklin, N.Y., died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at her home.

She was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Franklin, daughter of Earl and Flora Westcott.

She married Alfred Wilber on April 17, 1948. He predeceased her in 1982.

She was a member of the Christian Gospel Temple Church.

Surviving are three sons, Ronald of Englewood, Fla., R. Keith of Oneonta, N.Y., and Timothy Wilber of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves two brothers, Fred Westcott of Binghamton, N.Y., and Ernest Westcott of Franklin.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at 1 p.m. at East Sidney Union Cemetery, with Deacon Michael Donnell from the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating.

Leland C. Graves

ONEONTA — Leland C. Graves, 68, of Oneonta, died peacefully and honorably at home and in the presence of his loving family on Monday, Aug. 7, 2000.

The youngest of five children, Mr. Graves was born to the late Lawrence and Etta (Bouton) Graves in Cincinnatus on June 15, 1932.

One brother and one sister, Harry C. Graves and Margaret Graves Roberts, preceded him in death.

Mr. Graves was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Beverly M. (Compton) Graves, who he married 49 years ago this Friday, Aug. 11. Along with his wife, he was dearly loved by his daughters, their husbands and his grandchildren: Jeanine and Thor Eilertsen, Bjorn and Ian; Laurie and Michael Neander, Erik and Mark; and LeeAnn and Bart Munholand, James and Anna Lee. In addition, he will be missed by his loving sister, Anna E. Taggart; brother, Lawrence M. Graves; nephews, great-nieces, and friends.

Following graduation from Oneonta High School in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. With honorable discharge in 1959, and rank of staff sergeant, he followed with a career in law enforcement on the Ontario,  Calif., Police Department. Returning home, Mr. Graves served on the Oneonta Police Department until 1966, at which time he was accepted at the New York State Police Academy where upon graduation he was the recipient of the Superintendent's Award for academic achievement.

He enjoyed and served most respectfully as a member of the New York State Police, Troop C, serving as station commander in Oneonta and retiring in 1985, as traffic supervisor, Troop C headquarters in Sidney. Following retirement, he and his wife were very fortunate to have enjoyed travel to Alaska and Mexico, and many winter months together in Florida.

As a father, it was a privilege to have him as our rock and our gentle guide through life's storms. Along with his family and friends, he loved his devoted golden retriever "Princess," taking great pleasure in the various animals who became his trusted acquaintances.

Mr. Graves was a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church in Oneonta.

Services will be held graveside at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, beginning at 11 a.m. and officiated by the Rev. Kenneth E. Barnes with a special Celtic Benediction and prayer provided by Mr. Graves' close friend and physician, Robert Davidson. Following services, friends are welcome to join family members at their Southside home to celebrate the life of our dear husband, father, grandfather and friend.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing, may consider memorial contributions to The New York State Police "Trooper Foundation," 19 British American Blvd., Latham, N.Y. 12110, in memory of Leland C. Graves. His physician and friend, Dr. Y. Matsuo, spoke of Mr. Graves: "as we say in Japan, he was a true Samurai." So long, and God Bless.

Ellen Miller Larsen

HERKIMER — Ellen Miller Larsen, 97, died on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000.

Ellen was born July 6, 1903, daughter of Carl and Anna Miller, in Denmark. She came to the United States in 1921.

She married Bruno W. Larsen, Aug. 17, 1927, he passed away in 1974. She was also predeceased by one sister, Nita Nealsen Weeks.

Ellen became a resident of Otsego County in 1946. For many years she resided in Cooperstown and was employed as resident manager of Cooperlane Apartment in Cooperstown until the age of 85.

Ellen led a busy and productive life. She was one of the first presidents of the original Senior Citizens Club of Otsego County. She helped organize the Glimmerglass Circle in Cooperstown. She assisted in the formation of the Otsego County Council of Senior Citizens in which she also held offices.

Ellen was one of the charter members of the Otsego County Office for the Aging Advisory Council on which she served for more than 10 years. In addition she helped initiate a chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons in which she also held office. In 1980, she led the effort to organize a pre- White House Conference on Aging event in Otsego County. She received the Governor's Award of Distinction from Mario Cuomo in 1994.

She was also instrumental in organizing the early days of Hospice in Otsego County and also played a supporting role in bringing opera to Cooperstown. She volunteered in the community where she was needed. Her memberships also included the Unitarian Universalist Church in Oneonta.

Ellen spent the last seven years of life at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown and two months at Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer. The family would like to extend their thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at both facilities.

Ellen is survived by Ada and Ralph Blanchard of Herkimer, Ralph and Ellen Larsen, Carlsbad,  Calif., and Linn and Judy Larsen of Carlsbad,  Calif., and Edith Wilson and Jean Hobbs. Survivors also include grandchildren, Lesa, Lars, Eric, Cristi, Mark, Curt, Cindy and Inger; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews in Denmark and Florida.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at 5 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 25 Church St., Cooperstown.

Those who wish to remember Ellen may contribute to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Stanley Smith

SIDNEY — Stanley Smith, 71, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born son of the late Chester H. and Elsie (Cook) Smith on April 5, 1929, in Utica.

Mr. Smith served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Doris Coons on Aug. 8, 1953, in Sauquoit.

Mr. Smith received his A&E license and was an Airplane mechanic for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, when he retired in 1982.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, and a 50-year member of the Sauquoit Masonic Lodge. Mr. Smith was an active member of the Fagan Flyers, Sidney, and for several years was a scoutmaster for Troop 34, Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Smith of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Paula Smith of Rochester and CDR Timothy and Kathleen Smith of Monte Ray,  Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Thomas Holdrege of Sidney; one brother, Justin Smith of Chittenango; one sister, Mildred Karn of Woodgate; two grandchildren, Erin and Amy Holdrege; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Sidney, at 2 p.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of the United Methodist Church, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Salvatore DiGiacomo

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — Salvatore DiGiacomo, 91, of North Spring Run Road, died on Tuesday morning, Aug. 8, 2000, in Chippemham Medical Center, Richmond, Va.

He was born on July 16, 1909, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Marco and Philoemena Bevilaqua DiGiacomo.

As a young boy, Salvatore came to Utica where he lived at the Masonic Home.

He graduated from Utica Free Academy and went on to Syracuse University where graduated with a degree in architecture.

On Sept. 2, 1939, he married Wanda Osterhout in the Sarah Hill Wiley Memorial Chapel at Round Lake, N.Y.

For 25 years Mr. DiGiacomo worked as an architect for the U.S. Department of State in various embassies, retiring in 1971. A resident of the  Washington, D.C., area since 1942, he and his wife lived in Kensington, Md., until 1995, when they moved to Midlothian, Va., and have resided there since.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Kensington, Md., and a 60-year member of Utica Lodge #47 F&AM.

Mr. DiGiacomo's greatest pleasure was art, he spent his leisure time painting with pastels and oils doing portraits and landscapes.

Surviving besides his beloved wife of 59 years, Wanda, are a daughter, Sally, and her husband, David William Zuck, of Midlothian; two grandchildren, Capt. Jesse William Zuck (U.S. Army) Oahu, Hawaii, and Alice Elizabeth and her husband, Patrick Revere, of Midlothian, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph DiGiacomo and two sisters, Julia Pennisi and Helen Fernicola.

Funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs will officiate. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour before the funeral service (10 to 11 a.m.)

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Members of Utica Lodge #47 F&AM are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday for ritualistic services.

Lynn L. Payment

ONEONTA — Lynn Louise Payment passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000.

She was born June 26, 1946, in Tupper Lake and was the daughter of William and Irene (Robinson) Payment.

She graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1965, where she is remembered by some for her basketball skills. She worked at the Algonquin School in Saranac Lake until 1976, moving on the Upstate Home for Children in Oneonta, when the Algonquin School closed.

Ms. Payment was nationally recognized by the American Association of Mental Retardation for her outstanding work with the developmentally disabled.

Beginning in Saranac Lake, she coached Special Olympics for more than 20 years and founded Payment's Training Club, an athletic club to prepare children with special needs for competition in the Special Olympics.

Active with the Boy Scouts of America for many years as leader of Troop 22 in Oneonta (a troop of scouts organized particularly for the children at the Upstate Home), she received the Silver Beaver award, from the Otschodela Council.

She also found time to grow educationally receiving an associates degree from Maria College and a bachelor's degree from the State University College at Oneonta.

Her greatest achievement and legacy has been the difference she made in the lives of so many young people.

She is survived by sisters, Carol Poole of Saranac Lake and Cynthia Obert of Providence, R.I.; and brothers, Alan Payment of San Diego, Barry Payment of Rochester and Dale Payment of Plattsburgh; nieces and nephews include Sherry Fieroh of Paul Smiths, Calli Shelton of Houston,  Texas, Joseph Poole of Albany, Lesley Sodja of Rochester, Amy Banker of Rochester and Matt and Jill Obert of Providence, R.I.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the Special Olympics.

Memorial service to follow at a later date at St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta.

Stanley Smith

SIDNEY — Stanley Smith, 74, of Sidney passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

Mildred T. Whaling

COOPERSTOWN — A committal service for Mrs. Mildred T. Whaling, who died Feb. 22, 2000, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Maryland Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeffrey Hale, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Maurice S. Nichols

ONEONTA — Maurice S. "Nick" Nichols Jr., 62, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Thursday Aug. 10, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Oneonta, the son of Maurice S. and Loretta (Kelly) Nichols Sr.

Nick was a 20-year veteran and retiree of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam.

He was currently working at Price Chopper in Oneonta.

Nick was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta; Oneonta American Legion Post No. 259; Oneonta Moose Lodge No. 465; the former Oneonta Eagles, where he served as secretary; and the Toastmasters. He was also the president of the Oneonta Singles Club.

He is survived by his children, Marie Epperson, Michael Nichols, Matthew Nichols and Lisa Tormey, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; his father, Maurice S. Nichols Sr., of Oneonta; a sister, Patricia Van Hoesen, and her husband, Richard, of Davenport; his grandchildren, Amanda, Chrystal and Brandy Epperson, Jacob Nichols and Nicholas and Tyler Tormey; two nieces, Peggy Hait and Lorraine VanHoesen; and two nephews, Jim and David VanHoesen; along with several great -nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother, Loretta Nichols, and a sister, Mary Ann Nichols.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Beryl N. McGregor

GRAND GORGE — Beryl N. McGregor, 73, of Grand Gorge Apartments, Grand Gorge, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital in Margaretville.

She was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Middletown, the daughter of John and Mary (VanSpeenburg) Sprague. She married Richard B. McGregor on May 7, 1943, in Arena. Robert died March 15, 1977.

Beryl lived in the Stamford area most of her life. She had been employed at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Scotch Valley Ski Center in Stamford.

She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Gale (John) Merwin of Richmondville, Laberta Mattice of North Blenheim and Delores McGregor of Ilion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale (Brenda) McGregor of Cuddebackville and Robert (Betty) McGregor of Schenevus; her mother, Mary Sprague, of Margaretville; 12 sisters and brothers; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a grandson, Danny; a great-great-granddaughter, Qutina; two brothers; a sister; and a son-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Richard Elder, pastor of the Hobart United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be held in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Beryl's memory to the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad, Main Street, Grand Gorge, N.Y. 12434.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Antoinette Burrillo

QUEENS — Mrs. Antoinette "Ann" Burrillo of Corona, N.Y., 69, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the Elmhurst Hospital, Queens. She was born Dec. 5, 1930, in Corona, N.Y., the daughter of Donato and Rosina (Perotti) Pio.

She married Tony Burrillo on Sept. 11, 1949, in St. Leo Church, Corona, N.Y.

Antoinette will be remembered for her love of playing the lotto. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Tony Burrillo, of Corona; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Sue Burrillo of Lyons Falls, N.Y., and Mark and Rachel Burrillo of Crumhorn Mountain; three grandsons, Daniel, Vincent and Ralph Burrillo Jr.; a stepgranddaughter, Melissa Bullis; and four sisters, Josephine, Lucy, Virginia and Mary. Antoinette was predeceased by her brother, John Pio.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Paul A. Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Maryland Cemetery, Maryland.

The family will be present at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Antoinette Burrillo.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
