Alice L. Tweedie

CHASE MILLS — Alice L. Tweedie, 87, formerly of Mundale, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at her home in the senior citizens' apartments in Waddington.

She had formerly lived with her daughter and her family for 16 years.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, doing puzzles, crocheting and knitting. Her expert handicrafts can be found in the homes of her children and grandchildren.

Born March 13, 1913, in Hamden, the daughter of Charles and Lizzie Randall Barnes, she married Walter S. (Pat) Tweedie on Aug. 13, 1936. She and her husband operated a dairy farm until his death on March 8, 1975.

Surviving are four sons, Dale and wife, Dolores, of Chenango Bridge, Harold and wife, Pat, of Penhook, Va., Gary and wife, Joan, of Walton and Glenn of Deposit; one daughter, Sandra, and husband, William Kerr, of Chase Mills; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Frances Gaylord of Wylusing, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Clifton, Douglas and Walter Barnes; a sister, Marjorie Barnes; and her grandson, Theodore Coulter.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edwin Lintern officiating. Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery. The family will be present at the funeral home on Friday evening, Aug. 11, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to your local Hospice organization in loving memory of Alice L. Tweedie.

Vincent Verzaro

SIDNEY — Vincent Verzaro of Sidney passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Quaker Street.

He was born son of the late James and Catherine Verzaro on March 27, 1913, in Binghamton.

Mr. Verzaro married Mildred Marr on June 14, 1942, in Sidney. She predeceased him on Dec. 26, 1981.

He was an engineer for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, for more than 40 years before retiring. Mr. Verzaro was also a teacher in the Sidney Central School District for many years.

He is survived by three daughters, Dr. Marcia Verzaro-O'Brien of Marathon, Fla., and Stockton, Dr. Mary Ellen Litzinger of State College, Pa., and Catherine Benna-Mallette of Quaker Street; and three grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, 2000. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Jane Campbell

STAMFORD — Jane Campbell, 85, of Main Street, Stamford, died July 14, 2000, after a short illness.

She was born July 31, 1914, in Astoria.

She was the wife of the late Henry Campbell.

Jane is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jim Rubino of Harpersfield; grandchildren, Steven of Florida, Scott Rubino of Harpersfield and Susan and Chris Mannino of Nashville, Tenn.; great-grandchild, Dakota Mannino of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Caroline Burris of Georgia and Helen Synder of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held July 18, 2000, at the Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery, Farmingdale.

Memorial service will be held at the Harpersfield United Methodist Church on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at 3 p.m., with Pastor Elliott Oakes officiating.

Funeral arrangements were by Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

Ignatizs Terranova

FRANKLIN — Mr. Ignatizs "Nat" Terranova, 72, of Franklin, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, suddenly at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, N.J.

He was born April 22, 1928, in Manhattan, the son of Filippo and Carolina (Apaio) Terranova.

He married the former Helen Sulzer on June 11, 1949, in  White Plains. She died Aug. 16, 1989.

Nat was a self-employed jeweler and diamond setter at the Diamond Center in Manhattan, New York City, for many years before his retirement. Originally from the Bronx, he moved to Franklin from Colorado in 1987. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing as well as bowling and golf. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Nat is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Carol and Robert Gonzalez of Medford, Christine Pascual of Colorado and Helena Terranova of the Bronx; one sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Raymond LoPresti of the Bronx; five grandchildren, Robert Gonzalez Jr., Renee Gonzalez, Joseph Gonzalez, Lisa Pascual and Thalis Terranova; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Jordan Moran; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral prayers will be offered at 8:45 a.m., Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, thence to Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, with the Rev. Gorden Polenz of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Colleen Burgher

ONEONTA — Colleen Burgher, 73, of Oneonta, died at her home on Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, with her children at her side.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Harry and Evelyn Butler Knapp.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Burgher Sr., on Nov. 25, 1998, and five sisters.

Mrs. Burgher was a lifetime resident of the area employed with the Oneonta Dress Factory for many years as a seamstress.

She was a loving wife to her husband and a devoted mother and grandmother.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church for more than 37 years and was also a member of the Women's Craft Group in the church.

She enjoyed the company and love from her friends, Barbara, Anita, Libby, TheoLynn and Norma.

Her passion was making crafts for her family and friends.

She is survived by five daughters and one son, Roberta French of Endicott, Sherry and Ron Decker of Otego, Shirley and Charles Erickson of Laurens, Norma and John O'Connor of Binghamton, Patricia Burgher of Oneonta and Richard and Chris Burgher Jr. of Oneonta; grandchildren, Christopher and Sharon Klem of California, Stacy Klem of Endicott, Heather and Sean Coleman of Oneonta, Cynthia Decker of Otego, Stephen and Shane Burgher of Oneonta, Ryan and Colleen O'Connor of Binghamton and Cherie Lynn Welch-Burgher of Oneonta; three great-grandchildren, Kristen Klem of Vestal, Miranda Klem of Endicott and Jesse Liam Coleman of Oneonta; a brother, Norman Knapp of Oneonta; a brother-in-law, Amos Hunt of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, and many special friends.

Funeral services will be noon on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with Pastor Raymond Lloyd, interim pastor of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Burgher's family is grateful for the support from Hospice and the love and support from many special friends who helped care for and brighten Mother's final days.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Colleen Burgher.

E.C. Kuzminski

COOPERSTOWN — The Very Rev. E.C. Kuzminski, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at The Meadows Nursing Home near Cooperstown.

Rev. Kuzminski was born on Sept. 5, 1905, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Stanley Kuzminski and Waleria Buczynski Kuzminski, who emigrated to this country from Poland.

Rev. Kuzminski attended public schools in Scranton and the Savonarola Theological Seminary. He was ordained a priest in the Polish National Catholic Church on Nov. 16, 1932, by the late Prime Bishop Francis Hodur at the St. Stanislaus Cathedral in Scranton. He served a succession of parishes in the church, including Youngstown, Ohio, Lakawanna, N.Y.,  Washington, Pa., New Castle, Pa., New Kensington, Pa., Rochester, N.Y., and Rome, N.Y. He served in Rochester for 17 years and Rome for 13 years.

In 1949, before the General Synod of the church, Rev. Kuzminski wrote a series of articles in "God's Field," the church publication, which were instrumental in establishing the English language Mass in the church. He was elevated to Very Reverend by the late Bishop T. F. Zielinski on Nov. 17, 1957, and appointed the first administrative senior of the Buffalo Seniorate. He was a frequent contributor to church publications and a lifetime active member of the Polish National Union, a fraternal organization associated with the church.

Rev. Kuzminski married the former Janina Garbinski on Sept. 9, 1941.

In 1984, Rev. Kuzminski retired after 52 years of active priesthood and moved with his wife to 45 Grove St., Cooperstown. Mrs. Kuzminski passed away on Sept. 28, 1992.

Rev. Kuzminski moved to the Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown in November 1999 and to The Meadows, in April 2000.

He will be long remembered by the countless couples he married, the infants he baptized and later prepared for confirmation, and by friends in all walks of life.

He was a member of Rotary International for 50 years.

Survivors include his son, Adrian Kuzminski, and his daughter-in-law, Dr. Antoinette Kuzminski, both of Fly Creek; his two grandsons, Stefan of Sonoma,  Calif., and Jan, of Fly Creek; and a great-granddaughter, Sonya, of Sonoma,  Calif.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Scranton, Pa., on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000.

Charlene Thomas

COOPERSTOWN — Charlene "Char" Thomas, 55, of Cooperstown, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 15, 2000, at her home with her very dear friend, Mike, at her side.

Char was born on July 27, 1945, in Herkimer, the daughter of Milton R. and Edith I. (Hill) Dibble.

Since October 1994, Char was employed as a transcription specialist at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown where she had many special friends who were very supportive and caring.

She was extremely active in the HIV/AIDS Support Group at Bassett, which will miss her wonderful sense of humor and strength. A very special friend from the group, Marsha Phillips, of Cooperstown, will especially miss Char.

Char is survived by her very dear friend, David "Mike" Pierce, of Cooperstown; her daughter, Michelle Engel, and her husband, Mark, of Sarasota, Fla.; her son, Frederick Joseph Mezzatesta and his children, Anthony and Ashley, of Brandon, Fla.; her stepdaughter, Edith Garum, of Laurel, Md.; her five sisters, Eloise Phillips of California, Fern Manis of' Indiana, Betty  Johnson and Lorraine Burns of Ilion and June Hoke and her husband, Ernest, of Richfield Springs; her two brothers, Milton Dibble and his wife, Delores, of Ilion and Doug Dibble and his wife of Mohawk. Char is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Roberta Hallock, of Richfield Springs.

Char was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Joyce Barrett of California; and her brothers, George and Richard Dibble.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Catskill Rural AIDS Society, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to David "Mike" Pierce, P.O. Box 884, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

John 'Jack' Park

SCHENEVUS — John "Jack" Park, 66, of Schenevus, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at home peacefully.

He was born Oct. 2, 1933, in Brooklyn, the son of John and Helen (Mallon) Park.

He married Barbara Huberts.

He served in the United States Army.

Jack was formerly of Queens and has lived in Schenevus for three years.

He worked as a bricklayer for the Local Union #1 in New York City.

Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Park of Schenevus; a son, Alexander Park of Schenevus; two daughters, Rosemary Park of Queens and Patty Lisi of Cherry Valley; a son, Roderick Park of Queens; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ronald Park of Cherry Valley, James Park of Ellenville, Robert Park of Cooperstown and Martin Park of Hawaii; three sisters, Eileen Labasi of Connecticut, Dorothy Memento of Cherry Valley and Mary Clarke of New Jersey; his mother-in-law, Agnes Huberts of Queens; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Roderick and Douglas Park; and a son, Jack Park of  South Carolina.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as the celebrant.

Burial will be at the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus. There will be a vigil service at 8:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Jack to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, 1 Atwell Ave., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

William McMurray

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Capt. William M. McMurray, 86, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Pleasant Heights, Rehab and Living Center, Fairfield.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 21, 1914, the son of William E. and Gertrude (Lehman) McMurray.

He was the husband of the late Lucy Wozar.

He owned and operated a commercial fishing boat out of Freeport, Long Island, for many years. Then he became owner and operator of his own tractor-trailer truck trucking in New York and Virginia.

He enjoyed tinkering, fishing and driving.

He was educated in the New York school systems.

He served in World War II in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy receiving several commendations from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He received his commendations as a hard hat diver removing detonators from live torpedoes, which were an attempt to sabotage the U.S. Normandee in the Hudson River, New York City.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Palmer of Sidney, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Theresa, Tina and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Brenda and Kristen Manwarren and Jennifer and Steven Thoms; three sisters, Joan Egeler of Cornville, Maine, and Lillian McMurray and Carole Ryan, both of Freeport, N.Y.; also many nieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, John; and five sisters, Mabelle, Gertrude, Edythe, Doris and Helen.

Funeral service will take place at a later date at the  Washington Memorial Cemetery in Mount Sinai, N.Y.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine.

Helen P. Truscott

ALBANY — Helen P. Truscott passed away peacefully on Monday, June 26, 2000, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 20, 1909, in Meridale, the daughter of LeRoy Palmer and Effie (Wilson) Palmer.

Helen was a 1926 graduate of the Delaware Academy in Delhi, and attended business school in Binghamton.

She had resided in Oneonta since that time, until she went to live with her son in Albany in 1996.

During World War II, Helen was a defense worker at the Scintilla Corp. in Sidney for most of the war. She retired in 1977, after many years as a secretary and administrative assistant in the art department in the State University College at Oneonta.

Helen was well-known for her love of music and the practice of her religious faith. She had played the piano from age 6 until her health prevented her from playing within the past two years. She had been a church organist many years ago.

Helen is survived by her two sons, David W. Truscott of Delhi and Timothy C. Truscott of Albany; and by three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Truscott, in 1984.

At Helen's request, her body was cremated at the Albany Rural Cemetery Crematory.

A memorial service will he held at the Meridale Community Church on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Meridale Community Church, Meridale, N.Y. 13806, or to the Oneonta Fire Department Rescue Fund, 79 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.
