Leif Nilsen

TODT HILL, Staten Island — Leif Nilsen, 52, of Todt Hill, Staten Island, a tugboat deckhand, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Glens Falls Hospital, while he was on vacation.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Nilsen was taken to Berkeley Heights, N.J. at age 6. He moved to Atlantic Highlands, N.J., in 1966, then moved to West Brighton in 1970. Three years later, he relocated to Grand Gorge, N.Y., where he remained for 15 years until settling in Todt Hill in 1988.

Mr. Nilsen was a tugboat deckhand with Moran Towing Corp., Port Richmond, for 20 years.

He enjoyed golfing and bowling, and he fished and crabbed whenever be could.

Mr. Nilsen also loved eagles and collected every piece of eagle-related memorabilia he could find.

"He celebrated and loved life," said his daughter, Donna Marsh. And in any situation, he could always make you laugh.

"He was our best friend and he was always there for his daughters and his grandchildren," she added. "We all chose different paths in life, but no matter what he was always supportive. He had such a good heart."

Surviving Mr. Nilsen in addition to his daughter, Donna, are two more daughters, Sandi and Kristine Nilsen; his mother, the former Ruth Sorensen; his brother, Roy; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville; burial in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.

Mary Dempsey

ILION — Mary Helena Coyle Yager Dempsey, 78, of 89 E. North St., Ilion, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Ilion, the daughter of the late Howard I. and Mary A. Coronkite Hoffman.

A 1941 graduate of Ilion High School.

Mrs. Dempsey was married to Lynn Coyle, the father of her children. She then married Francis Yager; he passed away several years ago. She then married Richard Dempsey; he passed away in 1999.

Mrs. Dempsey was a member of the Church of the Annunciation Ilion.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Hazel Coyle of Oneonta; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Rene' Cabrera of Ithaca; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Ruth Hoffman of Ilion and Howard and Marion Hoffman of Ilion; five grandchildren; seven nieces; and one nephew.

She was predeceased by a son, Lance Coyle in 1963, and a brother, Donald Hoffman.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dempsey will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at 9:30 a.m. from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St., Ilion, and a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, with Fr. Joseph Benintende officiating. Interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. Friends may call Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Muriel Stewart

SUMMIT — Muriel "Mim" Stewart, 81, of Charlotteville Road, Summit, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County at Cobleskill after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 17, 1918, in New York, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Waibel.

She was married in 1940, in the Bronx, to Joseph T. Stewart. They came to Summit in 1949, purchasing the Summit Telephone Co., which she and her husband operated until 1973, when they sold it to the Middleburgh Telephone Co.

She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Summit Fire Department and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Richmondville.

Mrs. Stewart is survived by three daughters, Carol Legasse of Cobleskill, Patricia Shepherd of Worcester and Maureen Johns of Summit. She was also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stewart died in 1999.

Services will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Gary Edmister, pastor of St. Paul's Church, officiating. Interment will be in Summit Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Memorials made to the Parkinson Disease Information and Referral Center American at Albany Medical Center, New Scotland Avenue, Albany, N.Y. 12208 will be appreciated.

Samuel F. Burnside

WEST WINFIELD — Samuel F. Burnside, 91, of West Winfield, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born June 20, 1909, in Worcester, son of Edgar and Rosa Van Dyke Burnside.

He graduated from New Berlin schools and served with the United States Army National Guard.

On Sept. 4, 1937, he was married to Madeline Becker in Cherry Valley.

Mr. Burnside was employed as a chief lineman for NYSEG for 511/2 years.

He was a member of the Federated Church, West Winfield and was a charter member of Winfield Lodge #581 F&AM. Sam was a charter member of the West Winfield Fire Department and was a co-founder of the West Winfield Rod & Gun Club, including the archery division. He competed statewide for many years. He was an avid sportsman and bowler at Bridgewater Lanes. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club of NYSEG.

Besides his wife, Madeline, he is survived by his children and spouses, Martha Welden, Edna and Donald Chadwell, David and Arlene Burnside and Mary and Frank Callahan, all of Richfield Springs; a sister, Mrs. Irene Denny of West Winfield; eight grandchildren, Herb, Becky, Eric, Jeff, Terri, Jim, Jennifer and Nancy; three great-grandsons, David, Cody and Austin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edgar.

Funeral service will be Friday evening at 8 at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield, with pastor Wallace Brown officiating. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park. Calling hours are Friday, 6 p.m. until funeral time.

Anthony LoRusso

DOWNSVILLE — Anthony J. LoRusso, 68, of Downsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000.

He was born in New York on Feb. 15, 1932, the son of Frank and Rose (Cafaro) LoRusso.

He had been a resident of Downsville for six years.

He was married to Rachel Cirillo on May 10, 1953, in Brooklyn.

He was an industry sales engineer for Brooklyn Union Gas Co., Brooklyn.

He was a member of the Nights of Columbus, Parish Council president, member of the Church of the Holy Family.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel LoRusso of Downsville; son, Frank LoRusso of Manhasset, Long Island; daughter, Diana Arencibia of Miami, Fla.; brother, Nicholas LoRusso of Brooklyn; sisters, Louise Fonte of Staten Island and Mary Livingood of Staten Island; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the Church of the Holy Family, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Holy Family, Maple Avenue, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, with Fr. Eugene F. Willis, of the Church of the Holy Family, officiating.

Interment will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Anthony LoRusso Memorial Fund

Mr. LoRusso would like to tell everyone that I love them and wish that they were as happy as I am now.

Donald C. Kilmer

HAMDEN — Donald Clifford Kilmer, 80, born Jan. 18, 1920, in Walton to Nora Belle Townsend and Robert Wellington Kilmer, died at home in the presence of his family in Hamden on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000.

He was raised on a dairy farm in Walton where he acquired many skills.

He attended a one-room country school house at Houck Mountain and completed courses in principals of diesel engines and metal working.

He drove trucks to New York City carrying vegetables in the 1930s. He helped build the dam on the Pepacton Reservoir in the 1950s.

He married Eleanor MacDonald on Nov. 24, 1940, who survives. They owned and operated End Valley Farm, registered Brown Swiss cattle, on two farms on MacDonald Road.

He built a sawmill and operated it with lumber from their land.

His interests included working with horses, tractors, woodcrafts, reading and music. He appreciated improving the land with his bulldozer. He uncovered an Owasco Indian workshop on their property, which was later explored by archaeologists, family and Walton Central School students. He was an avid hunter, stonecutter, and there was no question about his love for his Irish heritage. His greatest achievement was the family and home he created.

Following eight natural children he opened his home to 29 foster children. His home was always open to family and new friends.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Hamden, American Agriculturalist, American Dairymen Association, Farm Bureau, NRA, National Geographic Association and the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeder's Association.

Besides his wife, Eleanor, of nearly 60 years; he is survived by sons, Wayne, Ryan (Vera) and Lynn (Amy), all of Hamden, and Gene (Kathy) of Santa Maria,  Calif.; daughters, Sharon E. (Craig) Placek of DeLancey, Loretta (Marty) Foster of Phoenix, Ariz., and Joanne (David) Forry of Clifton Park; a brother, Jesse Houck of Binghamton; sisters, Louise Stevens of Walton, Rose Guiles of Apalachin and Shirley Buchma of Vestal. He is also survived by a dear foster son, Kenneth (Penny) Prestidge of Hamden; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Shackelton (1991); and a brother, Robert M. Kilmer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, Hamden, with the Rev. Donald T. Buddle officiating. Burial will be in Hamden Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday (just before the service) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Hamden in his name.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton.

Lloyd Brown

DAVENPORT — Lloyd Brown, 34, of Davenport, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, in the town of Davenport.

He was born Jan. 17, 1966, in Riverhead.

He was married to Juliane (Daab) Brown, who survives, as do two daughters, Rebecca and Robin, at home.

Mr. Brown served in the United States Navy from 1984-88 and worked as a maintenance mechanic in Oneonta.

A loving father, he loved to walk in the woods and pick flowers with his daughters.

Calling hours will take place on Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will take place at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, Long Island, at the family's convenience.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Wanda Antonette

FLEISCHMANNS — Wanda L. (Streeter-Buerge) Antonette, 47, of Fleischmanns, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston.

She was born Nov. 17, 1952, in Margaretville, the daughter of Virgil Streeter and Edith Hall Streeter.

She married Tomaso (Tom) Antonette on Oct. 4, 1997, at the United Methodist Church, Fleischmanns.

Wanda worked for Margaretville Memorial Hospital for six years. After leaving the hospital she worked for Dr. James Ferraro for 13 years and for the past 11 years for Dr. John Caronia, DDS, in Margaretville.

She enjoyed the Halloween season, having fun with all the kids. She collected rose glass and was known for doing a lot of painting around her home.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Tom Antonette of Fleischmanns; mother, Edith Streeter of Roxbury; father, Virgil Streeter of Halcott Center; one son, Wade Buerge; three stepchildren, Renee, Thomas Philip and Angelina; one stepgrandchild, Zoey Antonette; two sisters, Wilma Balcom of Margaretville and Wendy Brisco of Margaretville; and two nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh and the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt, officiating.

Following cremation service the committal will be private.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in Wanda's memory to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Delhi.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Lucille J. Ratliff

NEW BERLIN — Lucille J. Ratliff, 78, of New Berlin, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Hinton, W.Va., the daughter of Basil and Tina (Lipton) Ratliff.

She spent her childhood in the Hinton, W.Va., area until moving to New Berlin in 1974.

She was a graduate of Hinton High School.

Lucille is survived by one sister, Billie Honeywell of New Berlin; one brother, John R. Ratliff of Hinton, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews, Tommy Jo Hellems, Sheila Kuziak, Gary Hellems, JoAnn Hellems, Rob Ratliff, Nancy Stover, Linda Sherman and Betty Toranto.

She was predeceased by one sister, Virginia Hellems, in 1980.

She was a manager for Ames Department Store in Hinton, W.Va., and a member of the Central Baptist Church of Hinton.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles  Taylor of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin, officiating.

She enjoyed all sports, was an avid bowler and golfer and liked telling a good joke.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Philip K. Putnam

MCGRAW — Philip K. Putnam, 84, of North Road, McGraw, died Wednesday evening in Cortland Care Center.

Mr. Putnam was born in town of Maryland, the son of Orville and Bessie Wilsey Putnam.

He had lived in McGraw for 39 years and was a school teacher in McGraw Central School for more than 20 years, retiring in 1981. Before that, he had taught school in East Springfield Central School and West Valley Central School.

Mr. Putnam was a member of McGraw United Methodist Church, McGraw Senior Citizens, Cortland County Garden Club and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Pierce Putnam of McGraw; three sons, Frank Putnam of Oakland,  Calif., Warren Putnam of Portland, Ore., and Roger Bonsteel of Kingston; four daughters, Mary Johnshoy of McLean, Va., Elizabeth Wiggans of Bowie, Md., Susan Goodrich of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Deborah Gebczyk of Moravia; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday in McGraw United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tracey Golas officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the McGraw United Methodist Church, Box 608, McGraw, N.Y. 13101.

Arrangements are by the Barth Funeral Home, McGraw.
