David M. Joy

FORT WORTH,  Texas — David Mathew Joy died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, in the hospital at Fort Worth,  Texas.

He was born July 27, 1959, to Robert A. and Alice (Foote) Joy. He was raised in Morris and graduated from Morris Central School in 1977 and from the State University College at Oneonta in 1981. Throughout his earlier years in Morris, he was active in 4-H, band, chorus, served as an acolyte at Holy Cross Church and coached the first Jaycee soccer teams in that area.

He also attended clown college in Florida, graduated and toured for a year with Ringling Brothers' Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Recently, he was very active in the theater in the Fort Worth-Dallas area as an actor, teacher, set designer and costume designer.

He was well liked and received a number of awards including the prestigious Leon Rabin award for Costume Design.

He married Lillian Piazza on Sept. 6, 1993, in  Texas. They worked together in many facets of theater in the area.

David is survived by his wife, Lillian; brothers, Robert A. and his wife, Maureen, Lynn A., John H. and his wife, Martha; sisters, Janet A. and her husband, Douglas Van Zandt, Ann C. and her husband, Malcolm King. He is also survived by nine stepchildren, many aunts and uncles, 17 nieces and nephews and many cousins.

There will be no calling hours or funeral.

Donations in David's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, for family and friends at the Morris Fire Station from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Martin Fleischman

KINGSTON — Martin William Fleischman, 42, of RD 1, Gilboa, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Kingston.

He was born May 21, 1958, in Brooklyn to Marvin and Ann (Flaherty) Fleischman.

His family moved to the area in 1963. Martin was a graduate of Gilboa-Conesville Central School.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He loved the Conesville area and put a lot of time and effort into serving his community.

He married Robin Welch on July 22, 1978, at Grand Gorge.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1978 to 1982.

He was a general contractor in the area and was well known for his woodworking ability. He was a member of the Carpenters Union.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Fleischman; two daughters, Trinity and Amber; his mother, Ann Rowe; two brothers, Michael Fleischman and Patrick Rowe; his best friend, Richard Murphy; four nephews; and four nieces. He was predeceased by two sisters, Martha Jeanne and Nancy Mae, who both died Dec. 25, 1976; and his father, Marvin Fleischman, who died Sept. 22, 1965.

A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Windham with the Rev. Donald Doyle as celebrant.

Burial will be at Manorkill Cemetery, Manorkill.

Calling hours are Saturday and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

John E. Bussey

JAYUYA, Puerto Rico — John E. Bussey died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his home in Jayuya, Puerto Rico.

He was born Feb. 12, 1931, to John and Edna (Hunt) Bussey in Unadilla.

A graduate of the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill with a degree in horticulture, he was a training administrator with Air France for many years until his retirement.

He is survived by his mother, Edna Bussey, and his sister, Jean Farmer, both of Unadilla. He is also survived by four nieces and two nephews, as well as four grandnieces, four grandnephews and several cousins.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family and will be announced at a later date.

For those wishing to do so, memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department.

Mabel E. Ackerman

WEST BURLINGTON — Mabel E. Ackerman, 91, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at M.I. Bassett in Cooperstown.

She was born April 21, 1909, in the town of Edmeston, the daughter of Warren and Elva (Pashley) Parker.

She married Curtis C. Ackerman on July 15, 1930, at the Parker homestead. This past July they celebrated their 70th anniversary.

Mabel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garrattsville, served on the board, and was past secretary of the WSCS.

She was a graduate of Edmeston Central School, the Oneonta Normal School, and received her teaching diploma from the NYS University in August 1933.

Mabel had been employed at the Little Red School, which is now on permanent display at the Morris fairgrounds.

Mabel was a lifetime partner with her husband, Curtis, in the operation of their farm.

She loved all nature: the birds, the animals, the flowers; and was a master gardener in her own right. Mabel embraced the stone house farm, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her love, warmth and compassion.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis; her children and their spouses, Curtis C. and Joan Ackerman Jr., Frederick Ackerman, and Elizabeth A. and Herb Miller; her grandchildren and their spouses, Curtis C. and Sue Ackerman III, Debra Ackerman, Lynn Ann and Charles Pepper, Susan and Barry Horowitz, Vanessa and Phil Ollar, John Sturr and Matt and Jackie Sturr; her great-grandchildren, Sara C., Megan E. and Samuel C. Ackerman and Julia L. Horowitz.; and her sister, Ada Parker.

Mabel was predeceased by her brothers, George and Warren Parker; and her two sisters, Grace Nichols and Lila Tilley.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Garrattsville, with Pastor Bill Lyon officiating. Calling hours are Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Roberta B. Marcy

SIDNEY — Roberta B. Marcy, 80, of Sidney, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at the New York State Veteran's Home, Oxford.

She was born March 7, 1920, in Sidney, the daughter of Robert and Anna (Nash) Courtney.

She was married to Joseph I. Marcy on July 3, 1943, in Nutley, N.J. Mr. Marcy died in November 1985.

She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps.

Mrs. Marcy was a lifelong Sidney resident and for many years, she and her husband owned and operated Marcy's Sports Shop in Sidney and later the Marcy Cycle Center in Bainbridge.

She was a life member of the Sidney VFW Post #7914, and the Sidney American Legion Post #183, member and past matron of the Sidney OES, Women of the Moose Chapter #502 in Sidney and the Sidney Elks Lodge #2175.

Robert is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Kay Marcy of Mount Upton; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Bruce Marcy; a brother, Albert Courtney; and a sister, Kathleen Doxlittle.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

David Alton Yerdon

MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. — David Alton Yerdon, 62, of Madison Heights, Va., and formerly of Cherry Valley, N.Y., died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000.

He was the husband of Donna Webster Yerdon.

David was born March 30, 1938, in Cherry Valley, N.Y., the son of Florence Elliot Yerdon and the late Deforest A. Yerdon.

He was a retired banker at Central National Bank in New York and was a member of Elon Presbyterian Church in Elon, Va.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two children, Monica Y. deBruycker and her husband, Roy, of Lake Worth, Fla., and Daniel A. Yerdon and his wife, Michelle, of Madison Heights, Va.; three grandchildren, Steffanie Yerdon, Benjamin Yerdon and Roy deBruycker IV; and two brothers, Seth E. Yerdon of Cherry Valley, N.Y., and Gary E. Yerdon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Elon Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Barry Tucker. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Elon Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2288 Cedar Gate Rd., Madison Heights, Va., 24572.

Helen C. Knapp

ONEONTA — Helen C. Knapp, 92, formerly of Goodyear Lake, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born April 6, 1908, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Irving and Mary (Cortese) Knapp.

She married John P. Knapp on Jan. 6, 1942. He died on Feb. 2, 1990.

A lifelong area resident, except for living briefly in Syracuse and Albany, Helen was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by a grandson, Richard Knapp, and was predeceased by her son, Richard I. Knapp in 1976.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home on Tuesday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen C. Knapp

ONEONTA — Helen C. Knapp, who died on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, was also survived by a daughter-in-law, Rita A. Knapp of Laurens; and two great-grandchildren, Katelyn Marie Knapp and Richard I. Knapp III, of Wells Bridge.

Ralph Wildenstein

GUILFORD — Ralph W. Wildenstein, 90, a well-known Guilford dairy farmer and log home builder, passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 20, 2000, in the New York State Veteran's Home, where he had been a resident for the past three years.

Born in Mount Pleasant Township, Pa., Ralph grew up in Riverdale, Pa., where he attended and graduated from the Aldenville schools. Moving to the Guilford-Mount Upton area in 1942, Ralph and his wife purchased a dairy farm, which they, along with their family, operated until 1972.

Ralph and his wife were very active in the Dairyman's League Co-op over the years and were also strong supporters of the young people whose parents were also members of the co-op. Continuing to live on the farm on Shumway Hill in 1972, Ralph and his son began a log home business known as R&L Log Homes, which they continued to run as a family business until 1980.

Ralph continued to remain active and independent, living at his home until entering the Veteran's Home in 1997.

He had been an avid New York Mets fan over the years. He knew all of the players by name and would also voice his opinions, sometimes strongly, about plays that were made or who should be traded.

Born April 2, 1910, in Mount Pleasant Township, Pa., Ralph was the son of Henry and Mary E. (Ihlefeldt) Wildenstein.

On May 20, 1933, in Bethany, Pa., he married Flora Freer, who passed away Oct. 7, 1980.

Ralph is survived by his children and their spouses, Francis and Katherine Wildenstein of Bainbridge, R. Vernon and Judy Wildenstein of Walton, Loren and Peggy Wildenstein of Kingsport, Tenn., Myrna and Ronald Schuldt of Port Crane, Hazel and Ronald Fuller of Guilford and Ronald and Joan Wildenstein of Guilford. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kenneth Wildenstein, Michael Wildenstein, Karen Tripp, Shirley Duell, Douglas Wildenstein, Susan Hammerslag, Seth Wildenstein, Donald Wildenstein, Nancy Beadle, Darin Wildenstein, Loren Wildenstein Jr., Jerome Schuldt, Ralph Schuldt, Curtis Schuldt, Steven Fuller, Joseph Fuller, Jeffrey Fuller, Mark Wildenstein and Carrie Porter; 24 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Bessie Wildenstein of Pleasant Mount, Pa.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of many close family friends.

Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Flora Wildenstein; his grandson, Charles Wildenstein; and his sister and brothers, Arlene Decker and Karl and Burton Wildenstein.

Funeral services for Ralph will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Towers, pastor of the Fairview United Methodist Church of Binghamton, officiating. Interment will follow in the Pioneer Cemetery of North Guilford. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Upton Methodist Church, Mount Upton.

Donald Morrison

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Donald W. Morrison, 76, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at his home in Cherry Valley.

He was born Oct. 4, 1923, in Cooperstown, the son of Glenn and Geneva (McRorie) Morrison.

On July 2, 1966, he married Virginia Leneker in Campbell. She survives.

Mr. Morrison attended Edmeston and Cherry Valley Central schools, was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving from 1942-1945. He worked as a truck driver and bus driver for Cherry Valley school until 1985.

He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion, Cherry Valley.

Besides his wife, Virginia Morrison of Cherry Valley; he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Cathy Morrison of Sanford, Maine, David and Chris Morrison of Shapleigh, Maine, Donald Jr. and Colleen Morrison of N. Berwick, Maine, and James and Claire Morrison of Sanford, Maine; a daughter, Donna Mae Hupe of Shapleigh, Maine; a brother, Lester Morrison of Fly Creek; a sister, Irene Harbison of Cherry Valley; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Glenn and Geneva Morrison, and a brother, Walter Morrison.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A graveside funeral and committal service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow.

There will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Agnes S. Burns

CORTLAND — Agnes S. Burns, 81, of 809 Fer-Cor Drive, Cortland, died on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at the Cortland Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Herminie, Pa., the daughter of the late Anthony and Agnes Kodrich Slivsek.

She was a graduate of Westford Union Free School in Westford and also from the Excelsior School of Business in Utica.

She married John N. Burns on Dec. 27, 1941, in St. Joseph's Church in Worcester.

Agnes was an active member of St. Margaret's Church in Homer for many years. She was also a member of the National Secretaries Association, Cortland Chapter, and was voted secretary of the year in 1973.

She retired in 1980 from the Tunison Fish Lab in Cortland and also retired from the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES in 1973.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, John N. Burns; a sister, Hilda S. (Joseph) Mercun of Oneonta; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. R. Daniel DeLorme. Interment will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will receive friends at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home Inc., 5016 North Main St., Homer, N.Y. 13077, on Wednesday, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a vigil service for Agnes at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Burns' name may be directed to St. Mary's School, 44 North Main St., Cortland, N.Y. 13045.
