Kenneth D. Francis

AYDEN, N.C. — Kenneth D. Francis, 65, of Willow Green Road, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at the Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C., following a long illness.

Mr. Francis was born May 22, 1935, in East Worcester, the son of Kenneth J. Francis and Charlotte (Johns) Francis Simmons.

Mr. Francis had been a resident of Richmondville for 15 years before moving from this area. While living here, he was a member of the Fraternal Organization of the Eagles Aeries #2095 of Cobleskill.

Mr. Francis retired from the Frito Lay Co. of Orlando, Fla., where he worked on the production line. He resided in Ayden, N.C. for the past six years.

Survivors include his wife, Avis (Gallup) Francis, whom he married Nov. 20, 1954; five daughters, Cynthia Sommers of Northport, Long Island, Kelly Haslum of Copake, Debra Dennison and Sonya Beadling, both of Farmville, N.C., and Sandra Ostrander of Richmondville; a son, Peter Francis of Ayden, N.C.; his mother, Charlotte (Johns) Francis Simmons of East Worcester; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Raymond Richards of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Cobleskill. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24. Burial will be in the Charlotteville Rural Cemetery.

Helen B. Nichols

ONEONTA — Helen B. Nichols, 92, of Oneonta, died on July 30, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born on Dec. 31, 1907, in Unadilla, the daughter of the late Julius C. and Mabel Babcock Barber.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles G. Nichols, on Aug. 11, 1975.

She is survived by a sister, Ethel Lockhart of Binghamton. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Special friends, Bill and Marge Higgins of Oneonta.

Mrs. Nichols was a lifetime resident of the area graduating from Oneonta High School Class of 1929, before beginning her 21-year career as a secretary at the Oneonta Star retiring in 1971.

She was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Oneonta Country Club, participating in the Women's Golf Association at the club. She was also a member of the Oneonta American Legion Post 259 Auxiliary, as well as the First United Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway, of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Alfred 'Al' Winn

ONEONTA — Mr. Alfred "Al" Winn, 67, of Oneonta died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at home with his family present.

He was born Nov. 29, 1932, in Schodack Landing, the son of John and Winifred (Smitts) Winn.

Mr. Winn married Barbara Bell on Feb. 21, 1954, in Oneonta.

Mr. Winn served with the United States Air Force from 1950- 1952.

Mr. Winn was with the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Oneonta, for 35 years, retiring in October 1994. Mr. Winn did deliveries and was a salesman for the company and, before retirement, did repair work for the company.

Mr. Winn enjoyed golfing and had also bowled on Tuesday night bowling league. He had also been in the adult softball league.

He was present for the 9:15 coffee at McDonalds, and in years past enjoyed camping. He was currently a collector of Coca-Cola memorabilia. He was well known in the community and family and friends were his foremost importance.

Mr. Winn is survived by his wife, Mrs. Barbara Winn at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Roseanne Winn of Bainbridge and Robert and Jo-Ann Winn of Oneonta; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ms. Lou Ann Harrison of Oneonta, Mrs. Karen and Michael Syron of Oneonta, Mrs. Analee and Harry  Johnson of Oneonta and Ms. Marilyn "Mary" Winn of Oneonta; one brother, George M. Winn of Sop Chopy, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Edwards of Oneonta and Mrs. Carol W.  Taylor of Cooperstown; nine grandchildren, Brian and Nicole Harrison, Erin Syron, Derek and Andrew Winn, Kristin and Alex Winn and Matthew and Douglas Johnson; in-laws, Ben and Laura Haney, Cliff and Ruth Bell, Dave and Lois Bell and Bill and Phyllis Bell; special friends, Amber Forbes and Nancy Lopez; nieces and nephews; and loving companion, Shelby.

He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Marty, Thomas, Hugh, Winifred, Peter and John.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes, pastor. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Friends may call at the Elm Park Church from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, or the family will be present at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Those who wish may make contributions to either the Elm Park United Methodist Church or to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Charles D. Nichols

ONEONTA — Charles D. Nichols, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

The eldest of three sons of Howard C. and Edna Carroll Nichols, he was born June 6, 1923, in Oneonta.

On July 1, 1947, he married Nancy MacEwan Moody.

He attended the elementary grades in the Oneonta public schools and graduated from the Watervliet High School in June 1941.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation. Serving both in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operation during World War II, he attained the rank of petty officer first class. His ship, the USS Henry A. Wiley DM-29, earned four battle stars and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its heroic action during the Okinawa campaign. He was released from active duty in December 1946 and returned to Oneonta. He was recalled to active duty in June 1951, for the Korean Conflict, serving in the USS Robinson DD-562. Following his release from active duty in September 1952, he returned to college.

In June 1953, he graduated from the Oneonta State Teachers College where he was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the Educational Honor Society. He pursued his studies in Engineering at Temple University in Philadelphia.

He was employed as an applications engineer at Scintilla Bendix from 1957 until 1965. He then joined the Wall Colmonoy Corp. and was the plant manager of their Canadian Plant in Montreal until 1973. He was named senior research and development engineer and transferred to the San Antonio Plant where several new patents and manufacturing processes were developed under his leadership. In 1975, he left industry and returned to the educational field.

He retired as assistant professor of industrial engineering technology at Delhi in September 1990. He was a senior member of Robotics International, a division of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a senior member of the Society of Industrial Engineers, and a member of the New York State Engineering Educators Association, a past master of Freedom Lodge #324 F&AM, past member Chapter #178 F&AM and past commander Norwich #46KT. He was also a member of the American Legion, "Donald Gleason" Post #190 in Delhi and the USS Henry A. Wiley DM-29 Plank Owners Association.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; their daughter, Mrs. Linda-Rae Coombs; one grandson, Craig D. (Karen) Harder; two great-grandsons, Tyler and Grant Harder of Buffalo; and two stepgrandsons, Christopher and Joshua Coombs of Sidney.

He was predeceased by his middle brother, Ivan G., who was listed as missing in action from a bombing mission in Europe during WWII, and his youngest brother, Alvin H., who passed away July 7, 1995, in Tampa, Fla.

Cremation arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home and his ashes will later be buried at sea.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the C&MA Church of Delhi, R.D. #1 Box 703A, Delhi, N.Y. 13753, for a memorial fund in his name.

Ruth Jacobsen

MORRIS — Ruth Gregory Jacobsen of Morris died peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, at the age of 99.

Ruth was born March 28, 1901, in Mount Upton, the daughter of Virgil and Harriet Byam Gregory.

She grew up in Mount Upton and worked in the Mount Upton post office before her marriage to Bernhardt Jacobsen on Jan. 3, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa. Ruth and Ben resided in Connecticut for two years before settling in the Morris area, where they raised seven children.

Ruth was an accomplished cook and held a number of positions in that capacity. Her culinary skills were employed at Fox Hospital, a State University College at Oneonta fraternity, a church camp near Ossining, a camp near Cooperstown, the Morris Manor Farm and the well-known Ark Restaurant. Before her retirement in 1970, she managed the Morris Central School cafeteria for 10 years.

Well into her 80s she enjoyed helping in the clubhouse and visiting with the golfers at Cee Jay Golf Course, owned by her son and daughter-in-law.

Ruth was a member of Zion Episcopal Church, where she was active in the choir and the Episcopal Church Women. She was a member of the West Laurens Grange, Laurens Chapter #518 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Order of the Amaranth and the West Laurens Homemakers. She was also a member of the Otsego County Elections Board for many years.

Playing cards and bingo were favorite pastimes, and she was well-known for her needlework, particularly crocheting. Her children and grandchildren have been recipients of her hand-crafted afghans and quilts.

Ruth is survived by three daughters, Marion Dodge, Alma Pickens and Sandra Walling and her husband, Kenneth, of Morris; as well as three sons, Norman of Morris, Karl and his wife, Frances, of Saratoga and Clair and his wife, Lois, of Laurens. Ruth is also survived by 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernhardt, in 1976, and son, Frederic, in 1984.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. at Zion Episcopal Church in Morris, conducted by the Rev. John L. Scott III. She will be buried in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

At Ruth's request, there will be no calling hours but the family will greet friends in the Parish House after the service and internment.

Those who wish may make donations to Zion Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 267, Morris, N.Y. 13808; Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820; or the Morris Emergency Squad, donations for which may be left at the Morris office of the Wilber National Bank.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Mabel B. Tietjen

ONEONTA — Mabel Breta Tietjen, 86, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the Delaware Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born June 4, 1914, in Oneonta, the daughter of Samuel W. and Grace (Tompkins) Bristol.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jack Valentine of Belleview, Fla., and Grace and Richard DeMoney of Delhi; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Clifton Bristol.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the March of Dimes Association in loving memory of Mabel Breta Tietjen.

Jessie K. Miller

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Jessie K. Miller, 90, formerly of Richfield Springs, Mohawk and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had been a recent resident.

She was born on Aug. 25, 1909, in Oneonta, the daughter of Charles and Minnie Crandall Kenyon.

Jessie retired from Southern Bell in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., after more than 30 years of service.

She attended Mohawk Reformed Church and was a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers.

Jessie touched the lives of friends and family, with her unfailing spirit, her concern for others and her smile. Her joy was in giving, rather than receiving because she "never needed anything." She lovingly shared whatever she had, for she knew that true joy is in giving of oneself.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Irwin Peters of Richfield Springs; her granddaughter, Lisa Bishop; her great-granddaughter, Rachael Bishop of Red Hook; her sister, Leona Ballard of Fergusonville; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Miller; her grandson, Lee Peters; six brothers, Arthur, "Cappy," "Met," Dan and infant twin brothers, James and Charles Kenyon; and four sisters, Pearl Dingman, Cora Broadwell, Mildred Kenyon and Helena Woehrle.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Mohawk Reformed Church, 18 S. Otsego St., Mohawk, with the Rev. James DeWitt, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

There are no calling hours.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at A.O. Fox Nursing Home and Gary and Penny for their compassion, support and kindness.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arthritis Foundation, 5858 E. Molloy Rd., Syracuse, N.Y. 13211. Donation envelopes will be available at the memorial service.

All arrangements were entrusted to Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk.

Carl R. Centner

SCHENEVUS — Carl Rudolf Centner, 81, of Schenevus, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Ithaca, the son of Rudolf and Anna (Armstrong) Centner.

He married Gladys Winner on July 16, 1948, in Oneonta. She predeceased him on Aug. 27, 1992.

Carl served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1940-1945. He left Oneonta with Company G and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Carl was a graduate from the Oneonta High School.

He was employed as a construction laborer with various firms. In recent years, he drove the Otsego County Veterans van, transporting veterans to and from the Veteran's Hospital in Albany.

Carl was an active member of the VFW Post 2752 in Schenevus and was past commander from 1987-1988.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Carla and Donald Huntington of Schenevus and Gail Kaneg of Oneonta; four grandsons, Edward and his wife, Shannon Kaneg, of Milford, Curtis Morlock of Oneonta, Carl and his wife, Jennifer Morlock, of Morris and Lowell Huntington of Schenevus; four great-grandsons; two sisters, Hazel Carmell of Kingman, Ariz., and Lucille Cope of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the Heller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital officiating. Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery, with military honors presented by the VFW Post 2752, Schenevus.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in loving memory of Carl to the Boy Scout Troop 18, care of Rosalie Barnes, P.O. Box 321, Schenevus, the VFW Post 2752, P.O. Box 94, Schenevus, or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 county Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
