Catherine Hoffman

WALTON — Catherine Jane Hoffman, 73, of Walton, died unexpectedly at Wilson Hospital in  Johnson City.

Jane was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Troy, the daughter of Hubert and Avis Gillette Worden.

She graduated from Delhi Tech and has lived in Walton since 1945.

Jane married Ralph O. Hoffman on Sept. 21, 1946, in Franklin.

Jane's career began as a secretary for Crawford Feeds, followed by employment with Cornelius Blythe. She then worked for the Reporter Co. for 20 years and finally at Delaware Valley Hospital in Medical Records.

Jane was a longtime member of the Walton United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Ralph "Rusty" of Walton; sons, Jan and wife, Gerri, of Niceville, Fla., and Jon and wife, Linda, of Walton; daughter, Linda Bingle and husband, Joe, of Greenville, R.I.; two granddaughters, Stacy Dennis and husband, Scott, of Chicago, Ill., and Kelly Besic and husband, Peter, of Batavia, Ill.; three grandsons, Jon M. Hoffman and David Hoffman of Walton and Jan Christopher Hoffman of Niceville, Fla.; and great-granddaughters, Brittney Ketchem and Mary Catherine Dennis. Also surviving are five brothers, Paul Worden of Franklin, Lee Worden of Guilford, Richard Worden of Oneonta, Roland Worden of Little Rock, Ark., and Wayne Worden of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Cecil Worden, and two sisters, Fran Hall and Susan Worden.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Walton United Methodist Church, with John D. Clark and Diane Meredith officiating. Cremation with final disposition will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorials in the name of Catherine Jane Hoffman to the Wm. B. Ogden Free Library are appreciated.

Kathryn Edwards

BUTTERNUTS — Kathryn Mae Edwards, 81, of the town of Butternuts, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta where she had been a resident.

She was born Oct. 24, 1918, in the town of Butternuts, the daughter of Bert and Anna (Sommers) Stark.

She married Donald J. Edwards on Aug. 22, 1942, in Oneonta. He died April 9, 1982. She and her husband operated a dairy farm until 1961, at which time they moved to their present home where she enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking and baking for her grandchildren and her neighbors. She was also a great lover of cats.

She was a lifelong resident of the Butternut Valley and also a lifelong member of the Gilbertsville Baptist Church.

Kathryn is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Grube, and her husband, Mel, of Gilbertsville; a son, Thomas Edwards and his wife, Debbie of Hilton. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Rebecca Breslau and Jeni Grube of Gilbertsville and Stacy Edwards of Hilton and two great-grandsons, Codi and Jeremy Breslau.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating. Interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville. Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 7 to 9 p.m.

Those who wish may donate to the Gilbertsville Baptist Church or the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Gerald A. VerValin

UNADILLA — A committal service for Gerald A. VerValin of Unadilla, who passed away Feb. 27, 2000, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Alice N. Bramer

COOPERSTOWN — Alice Niles Bramer, 84, formerly of Fairport, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Cooperstown.

She was born April 3, 1916, in Rochester, the daughter of William and Mary (Frawley) Niles.

On April 9, 1940, she married Lewis Bramer of Fairport; he predeceased her in 1996.

She is survived by two daughters, Nina Crosier of Pinehurst, N.C., and Linda Hebert of Hartwick; five grandchildren; a sister, Marie Schultz of Rochester; two sisters-in-law, Sue Bramer of Chicago, Ill., and Elizabeth Grainger of Norwich; a brother-in-law, Stewart Walling of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Stone Church, Schuyler Lake, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Contributions in Mrs. Bramer's memory may be made to The Meadows, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Jacob E. Bryden

DELHI — Jacob E. Bryden, 68, of Delhi, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

His wishes were to be cremated. Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

William Waterhouse

ONEONTA — William C. "Bill" Waterhouse, 80, of Oneonta, died at his home on Friday, Aug. 25, 2000.

He was born on March 22, 1920, in Merrimac, Mass., the son of the late Moses and Hortense Lydston Sargent.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1984, and a son, Robert in 1952.

He is survived by four daughters, Jane Gildersleeve of Charlottesville, Va., Ellen Bronstetter and her husband, Al, of Sturgiss, Mich., Elizabeth Sheff and her husband, James, of Maryland and Mary Vaughn and her husband, William, of Charlottesville, Va.; three sons, William Waterhouse and his wife, Marilyn, of Oneonta, Pete Waterhouse of East Meredith and Thomas Waterhouse and his wife, Kim, of Oneonta; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis Elwell and her husband, Dick, of Virginia, Bernice Sheldon and her husband, Raymond, of Massachusetts and Jean McMillan and her husband, Robert, of California; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Waterhouse moved to Oneonta from Long Island in 1957. Before his relocation he owned and operated the Waterhouse Five and Dime Store. Over the years, he worked as a manager for the Emmons Farms, and most recently the State University College at Oneonta until his retirement in 1987.

Mr. Waterhouse was a proud United States Navy veteran of World War II serving as a chief pharmacist's mate. In addition, he received several medals and commendations including the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal among others.

He was a member of the American Legion, and was responsible for the formation of Cub Scout Pack 27 in Oneonta. An avid sportsman, Bill enjoyed golf as a member of the Woodhaven Golf Club. He was also a member of the Oneonta First United Methodist Church.

Bill will be remembered as a man who was devoted to his family.

Funeral services will be Monday (today) at 6:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Jack Clark, friend of the family, officiating. Interment will be Tuesday in Long Island National Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may call at their convenience from 2 p.m. until the time of services on Monday (today) at the funeral home. The family will be present from 4 p.m. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, in Bill's memory.

Donald J. Barrett

WEST WINFIELD — Donald J. Barrett, 53, of Wall Street, died on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Faxton Hospital, Utica.

He was born on July 30, 1947, in Cooperstown, son of the late Elmer and Clara Jakubek Barrett.

Don was raised in Richfield Springs on Canadrago Street and was a graduate of Richfield Springs Central School.

It was in the late 1970s that he moved to West Winfield, where he had resided since.

For many years he was a machinist for the Chicago Pneumatic Co., Utica, and for the past two years for the River Hawk Co. in Yorkville.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, going on hunting trips with his close cousins, Leo and Howard Barrett.

He was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

Besides his parents, Elmer and Clara, he was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Barrett, in 1970; Aunt Marie Saltys in January of this year; his dear friend and devoted companion, Shirley Plows in 1996; and her granddaughter in 1988.

Surviving him are Shirley's seven children; her 20 grandchildren, Don's special godchild, Victoria Peplinski Luke of Tennessee; and several cousins.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Joseph's Church Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrance Healy officiating. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Tuesday evening 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the West Winfield Volunteer Fire Department or the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

A Doris Catella

ONEONTA — A Doris Catella, 88, of Oneonta, died on Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born on Oct. 5, 1911, in Davenport, the daughter of the late Claude A. and Vida E. VanDeusen Taylor.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Catella, who she married on July 10, 1949; a son, Gary C. Catella and his wife, Rosanne, of Burton, Ohio; a daughter, Kim L. Waterhouse, and her husband, Thomas, of Oneonta; three grandchildren, Brian Waterhouse of Oneonta and Samantha and Zachary Catella of Burton, Ohio; and cousins, Norma Emory, Jean Schwarting and Russell Kennedy.

Mrs. Catella was a lifetime resident of the area who attended Hartwick College, and graduated from Oneonta Teacher's College in 1933. She obtained her education degree in 1960. She taught many years in the city of Oneonta, Voorheesville, East Greenbush, and the Franklin school districts before retiring in 1971.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Oneonta Federated Garden Club and the Davenport Historical Society. She was also a member of the Oneonta Christian Science Church.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of Mrs. Catella.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Albert J. Piatti

LAURENS — Mr. Albert J. Piatti, 75, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, after a short hospitalization from cancer.

Born in Union City, N.J., on Sept. 25, 1924, he was the son of Eugene and Romilda (Bernasconi) Piatti.

He was a 40-year resident of South New Berlin and lived in Laurens for the past five years.

He served in the Army Air Corps, and later in the 4th Infantry Div. as a field artilleryman in the European Theater during World War II.

He was a life member of the VFW Post 2782 in Norwich, and Elks Lodge 2175 in Sidney, where he bartended for several years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1688 in Laurens and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1282, in Stuart, Fla.

He worked for and retired from Bendix Corp.

Survivors include three sons, Paul of Jensen Beach, Fla., Thomas of Severn, Md., and Michael of Leonardo, N.J.; a daughter, Lora of Westin, Fla.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; his former wife, Marie, of 49 years, resides in Stuart, Fla.

Interment with full military honors performed by the Laurens American Legion Color Guard, will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the Laurens Cemetery. A reception will follow at the American Legion Hall.

Those who wish may contribute to the American Legion Post 1688, Laurens, N.Y. 13796.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Robert MacArthur

DAVENPORT — Robert B. MacArthur, 82, of Davenport, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Davenport.

He was born Jan. 23, 1918, in the town of Kortright, the son of Robert L. and Inez (Johnson) MacArthur.

He married Rita Fluney on June 12, 1942, in the Catholic Rectory in Stamford; she predeceased him Jan. 31, 1982.

Mr. MacArthur lived in Scotia, and worked for Mobil Oil Co. as a dispatcher and following his retirement returned to Davenport.

Bob loved his golf game and played on many area courses.

He was a 1936 graduate of Davenport Union Free School and played baseball for the school team and Town Team.

Surviving are three children, Roberta Klink of Lake Forest,  Calif., Elizabeth Madruga of San Diego,  Calif., and John J. MacArthur of Schenectady; a friend and companion, Viola Hodge of Davenport; two sisters, Harriet Keith and Wilma Youker, both of Schenectady; and a brother, LeRoy MacArthur of Hobart; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Davenport First Responders, Davenport.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Evelyn K. Jeffers

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. — Evelyn K. (Gustavsen) Jeffers, age 93, of Swampscott, Mass., died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Salem Hospital.

She is the wife of the late Jess T. Jeffers, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage.

Born in Lynn, Mass. on May 2, 1907, she is the daughter of the late Henrik and Karine (Larsen) Gustavsen.

Mrs. Jeffers graduated from Swampscott High School, Class of 1925. After graduation, she went on to attend Salem Commercial School.

Mrs. Jeffers was a devoted mother and enjoyed caring for her family. She was also an avid Boston Bruins fan as she and here husband were season ticket holders for many years.

She was a former member of the Church of the Redeemer of Swampscott until it closed, when then she began attending First Congregational Church of Swampscott.

She is survived by her son, Richard A. Jeffers, and his wife, Beverly, of Groton, Mass.; her daughter, Shirley E. Walker, and her husband, Ken, of Oneonta, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Gustavsen of Swampscott, Mass., and Sunny Gustavsen of Danvers, Mass.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Jeffers is the sister of the late Harry Gustavsen, the late Walter Gustavsen, the late Ivar Gustavsen and the late Doris Sjogren.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at noon at the Richardson's Funeral Home of J. S. Waterman & Sons, 48 Lafayette Park, Lynn, (near Goldfish Pond). Visitation will be held one hour before the service. Interment in Swampscott Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Mrs. Jeffer's memory may be made to the North Shore Medical Center Foundation Bldg. Fund, 81 Highland Ave., Salem, Mass. 01970-9881.

Janet A. Adams

HARPERSFIELD — Janet A. Adams, 55, of Harper Road, Harpersfield, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at her residence.

She was born May 22, 1945, in Norwalk, Conn., the daughter of Vincent J. and Jennie (Gesualdi) Andronaco.

She married Charles Adams on April 11, 1976.

Janet lived in Harpersfield for the past five years, moving there from New Canaan, Conn.

Janet was a secretary for Paul Madison Attorney in Stamford for the past four years.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Adams, of Harpersfield; three daughters, Aubrey of Syracuse University, Lorraine Clark of New Milford, Conn., and Patricia Adams of South Salem; four stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a stepson, Richard Adams, and a brother, Vincent A. Andronaco of New Canaan, Conn.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in New Canaan, Conn. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien, Conn.

Calling hours will be held at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien, Conn., from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made in Janet's memory to the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or to the Davenport Emergency Squad, Main Street, Davenport, N.Y. 13750.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford.
