Kelley R. Chadwick

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Kelley R. Chadwick, 89, of the West Lake Road at Canadarago Lake, Richfield Springs, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Born in  Washington, D.C., April 13, 1911, he was the third child of Dr. DeWitt C. and Alicia Alleyn Rothwell Pechell Chadwick.

A graduate of Mercersburg Academy, he attended Haverford College and graduated from the Colorado School of Mines as a metallurgical engineer.

He married Helen M. Loughrey on Aug. 7, 1937, in Merchantville, N.J. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1997. Mrs. Chadwick died Sept. 15, 1998.

Mr. Chadwick was employed by the Parlette Corp. in Metuchen, N.J. and then by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Salt Lake City, Utah. During World War II, he was employed by the DuPont Corp. at Chicago, Ill. He worked for DuPont at Toledo, Ohio, and the Remington Arms Co., Ilion. He retired from the Remington Arms Corp. in 1976, but continued to work as a consultant for the DuPont Corp., Wilmington, Del., for many years.

He was well-known as a sportsman, hunter, fisherman and for his skills in benchrest and trap shooting.

He was a member of the Richfield Springs Rod and Gun Club and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club. He was an early member of the Canadarago Lake Association.

Mr. and Mrs. Chadwick were bridge players and golfers and members for many years of the Otsego Golf Club and the Cedar Lakes Golf Club.

Mr. Chadwick is survived by his daughter, Leigh, and her husband, Frank C. Eckmair, of Gilbertsville; daughter, Susan Robinson of Grand Island; daughter, Patricia, and husband, Donald Doersch, of Seattle, Wash.; son, Dr. Thomas K. Chadwick of Carver, Mass., daughter-in-law, Mary O. Chadwick of Richfield Springs; grandchildren, Antoni F. Eckmair of Rochester, Kelley M. Eckmair Esq. of Unadilla, Stephanie E. Middleton of Hingham, Mass., John G. Robinson of Tennessee, Thomas K. Robinson of Buffalo, Trevor K. Chadwick of Richfield Springs and Andrea M. Chadwick of Cazenovia; and seven great-grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by son, Joseph J. Chadwick; his sister, Mary Chadwick Chisholm of Chatham, Mass.; and brother, Dr. Leigh C. Chadwick of Blue Hills, Maine.

At Mr. Chadwick's request, there will be no calling hours. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that gifts be made in Mr. Chadwick's memory to Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Claribell Epps

MILFORD — Claribell Epps, 81, formerly of Milford, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, St. Johnsville.

She was born in Davenport, the daughter of Arthur and Nellie (Allen) Epps on March 1, 1919, and graduated from the A.L. Kellogg School in Treadwell, Class of 1937.

Claribell held a variety of positions: working for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles; in San Francisco as a long-distance telephone operator; as a shipyard worker during World War II and later as a bookkeeper at a 1,000-acre dude ranch in Lake George.

She was a member at large of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Schenectady, a lifelong member of the VFW 487 of Davenport and an avid bowler.

Miss Epps is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Palmer of Hudson Falls and Helen Dibble of Oneonta; three brothers, Allen Epps Sr. of East Meredith, Arthur Epps Jr. of Milford and Robert Epps of Arizona; a special niece and nephew, Nancy and Hank Crannell; and many nieces and all her family at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home.

She is predeceased by her parents and one sister, Ruth Wright.

Funeral services for Miss Epps will be held at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Milford, on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Nancy Kozlewski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, presiding. Interment will follow in the Milford Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, Aug. 31, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Those who wish may send contributions in her name to ones favorite charity.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

John Salerno

HOBART — John Salerno, 43, of Township Road, Hobart, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, in the town of  Jefferson as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born Nov. 27, 1956, in Bayshore, Long Island, the son of Francis and Concetta (Basile) Salerno.

He married Dawn Slater on June 10, 1981, in Cobleskill.

John moved to the Stamford area in 1974, from Central Islip. He graduated from Stamford Central School in 1976.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

John was a wonderful father and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Salerno of Hobart; two daughters, Alicia and Sara, both at home; his parents, Francis and Concetta Salerno of Stamford; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Karen Salerno of Medford, Long Island, Anthony and Meg Salerno of Delhi, Stephen and Joanne Salerno of Cobleskill and Mark and Sheri Salerno of Delhi; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, pastor, presiding. Burial will be held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, on Thursday, Aug. 31, after 3 p.m. The family will be in attendance at the funeral home between 7 and 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Leo L. Sand Jr.

MOUNT UPTON — Leo L. Sand Jr., 73, of Mount Upton, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at his home.

He was born son of the late Leo and Jennie (Starr) Sand on May 7, 1927, in Tenafly, N.J.

Leo served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

He owned and operated his dairy farm, and was a security guard for the Amphenol Corp., Sidney, until he retired. Leo also drove school buses for the Gilbertsville-Mount Upton School District.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a former master of the Butternut Valley Grange.

Leo was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife, Dora M. (Smith) Sand of Mount Upton; daughter, Cynthia Page of Mount Upton; two stepsons, James M. Moore and Joseph C. Moore; brothers, Paul Sand of New Jersey and Albert Sand of New Jersey; sisters, Daisey Hallman of New Jersey and Vera VanHouten of Gilbertsville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Carl Smith of N. Sanford; sisters-in-law, Jennie Smith of Hurleyville and Eva DeVoe of Woodbridge; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his stepson, David H. Moore.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chenango County Hospice, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

John Louis Gallo

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — John Louis Gallo, 85, of RD #1, died on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Dec. 27, 1914, in New York City, the son of the late John B. and Luigia Gallo.

He was raised and educated in Union City, N.J., where he graduated high school.

On Sept. 11, 1937, he married Beatrice McCraken in Union City, N.J.

For many years he worked as the terminal manager for Maislin Bros. Trucking in New Jersey, retiring in 1980.

He and his family have resided in Richfield Springs since 1960, coming from North Bergen, N.J.

John was a loving father and devoted husband.

Surviving him besides his wife, Beatrice, of 63 years, are two sons, John A. Gallo of Ridgefield, N.J., and Philip Gallo and his wife, Diana, of Canton; one daughter, Lydia Prospero of Ridgefield, N.J.; and two granddaughters, Dawn Shevlin and Dina Prospero.

Entombment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse, will be private.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Jarred A. Romero

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Jarred Anthony Romero passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000. Jarred was a fun-loving young man who turned 16 on March 18. A 10th-grade student at Richfield Springs Central School, he was active in football, the school chorus for the past three years. He played the flute and was learning to play the guitar. He was a star Scout with Troop 114 and went through junior leadership training. He was a Paul Bunyan Woodsman. Jarred was also very active with the Richfield Springs Youth Ministry "The Zone." He was a past 4-H Club member and had worked for the Good Old Boys Construction doing carpentry. Jarred will be remembered for his sense of humor and his thirst for life and knowledge. His scholastic interests were in the human-service field as he wanted to be a medical doctor. Jarred is survived by his mother, Audrey J. Warner, and stepfather, James J. Warner, of Richfield Springs; his father, Dominic B. Romero, and his fiancee, Becky Beach, of Beaufort, S.C.; a brother, Justin F. Romero; a half-brother, Conner Romero; his stepsisters, Lauriel L., Carrie L. and Jillian Warner, all of Richfield Springs; his maternal grandparents, Francis and Adeline Tanner, of Richfield Springs; paternal grandmother, Louisa Romero, of  Louisiana; aunts, uncles and cousins; Joyce and Ed Key and family; Ann and Rick Smith; Wormuth family; Gerald Tanner and family; Susan and Mark Havens and family; Tom and Lyla Tanner and family; Dan and Pat Breheny and family; Greg and Jean Shipman and family; Demetrio and Erin Romero and family; Luke Romero and family; Felice Hunter and family; Janice Leslie and family; and many friends. Jarred's life will continue; he was an organ donor.Calling hours will be Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.Funeral services will be held at the Richfield Springs Central School football field Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Jarred Anthony Romero Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o Richfield Springs Central School. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Rev. Robert Lanton

BINGHAMTON — The Rev. Robert E. Lanton began his walk with God on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center,  Johnson City, after an illness.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Hutchinson Lanton, Binghamton; eight children, Terri Idocks of Dunmore, Pa., Pattie Scott of Bokeelia, Fla., Thomas Lanton of Dalton, Pa., David Lanton of Conklin, N.Y., Connie Carroll of Grove City, Ohio, Debra Armbruster of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Daniel Lanton of Binghamton, N.Y., and Charles Lanton of Florida; and 11 grandchildren, Brian and Tracy Idocks, Jessica and Leba Lanton, Sarah Hurlbert, Shawn and Ryan Sweetary, Joseph McCullon Jr., Isaiah Carroll, Andrew and Kevin Armbruster.

He now joins his grandson, Nicholas Robert McCullon, in heaven.

The Rev. Lanton graduated from Binghamton North High School and Hartwick College, Oneonta. He received his master's of theology degree from the Colgate Rochester Divinity School.

During his 44 years as a minister of the United Methodist Wyoming Conference, he served churches in Kirkwood, N.Y.; Edmeston, N.Y.; Wyoming, N.Y.; Factoryville, Pa.; Scranton, Pa.; Vestal Center, N.Y.; Whitney Point, N.Y.; and Schenevus, N.Y.

In addition to his pastoral assignments, the Rev. Lanton actively served on many conference boards and committees, including many years on the board of directors for Sky Lake, Windsor, N.Y.

He was a member of the Scranton chapter of S.P.E.B.Q.S.A.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of the Rev. Lanton will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, at 2 p.m. at Tabernacle Methodist Church, 83 Main St., Binghamton. The Rev. Stephen R. Heiss will officiate, assisted by other members of the Methodist clergy.

Private burial will be in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Hillcrest, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Sky Lake of the Wyoming U.M. Conference, 501 William Law Road, Windsor, N.Y. 13865 or the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.

Arrangements are by the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home Inc., Binghamton.

Catherine Traphagen

DELHI — Catherine Traphagen, 86, of Delhi, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, in Hobart, N.Y. She was born Aug. 15, 1914, in Delhi, N.Y., the daughter of Loran and Jennie Mason.

Mrs. Traphagen graduated from Delaware Academy, Class of 1933, and from Hartwick College in 1937.

She married Charles Traphagen on July 26, 1941, in Delhi, N.Y.

Mrs. Traphagen taught English and dramatics at Bethleham Central High School, Delmar, N.Y.

The Traphagens moved back to Delhi in 1966.

She worked for the Delaware County Department of Social Services for 15 years.

Her husband Charles, of 58 years, predeceased her on Aug. 20, 1999.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Marshall McCall of Greenville, S.C.; and a son, Ralph Thomas Traphagen.

Services will take place Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware, N.Y., with the Rev. Frank Crenshaw officiating.

Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, N.Y.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, N.Y.

Margaret G. Smith

ONEONTA — Margaret G. Smith, 82, of Oneonta, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 30, 2000, at A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born April 4, 1918, in Walton, N.Y., the daughter of James and Grace (Shanley) Gadwood.

She married George Smith 1945 in Sidney. He died in 1983.

Margaret worked on the addressograph machine at Bendix in Sidney.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy VanWhy of Bradenton, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Debra Smith of Oneonta; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Ted Gadwood; and a sister, Helen Gadwood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at 12:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Walton, N.Y. The Rev. Eugene Willis will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 in loving memory of Margaret G. Smith.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Nancy J. Brookman

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Nancy J. Brookman, 51, of U.S. Route 20, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, in her home after a long illness.

She was born May 22,1949, in Los Angeles,  Calif., daughter of Jean Levin Tallakson and the late Wilfred Tallakson.

Nancy was raised in Los Angeles and was a graduate of North Hollywood High School.

She came to Richfield Springs in 1985 from Los Angeles and was married to Louis Brookman.

For the past seven years she worked as a claims adjuster for the New York Central Mutual Insurance Co. in Edmeston.

Surviving besides Louis Brookman, of Richfield Springs, are her mother, Jean Tallakson; two sisters, Ruth Zeccardi and Roberta Pass; and two nephews, Michael and Matthew Zeccardi, all of Los Angeles,  Calif.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at 7 p.m. in the Toddsville Community Bible Chapel, Greenough Road.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the American Cancer Society Otsego County Unit, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney, N.Y. 13838
