Irene L. Ploutz

STAMFORD — Irene Laura (Tompkins) Ploutz, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend of many, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in the arms of her loved ones after a courageous battle with diabetes.

She was born on June 21, 1925, in Conesville, the daughter of Samuel and Laura (Jackson) Tompkins.

On Oct. 10, 1943, she married Kenneth Ploutz in Stamford where they resided for 57 years. Her husband predeceased her on Nov. 7, 1999.

After attending Grand Gorge Central School she set up housekeeping services for families in the Stamford area.

She was a past member of the Diabetic Association and the Stamford Methodist Church.

Her primary interests were in the family and she spent most of her life in maintaining our sense of family and love for each other.

For the past five years she has fought a courageous battle with end-stage renal disease as a patient at the Renal Dialysis Department of Bassett. Her courage and strength have been an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her two daughters, Brenda Warner of Stamford and Kathy and son-in-law, Brad Ward, of Oneonta. She is also survived by four grandsons, Matthew and Aaron Ward of Oneonta, Dillon Warner of Stamford and Jason Warner and his wife, Hope, of Davenport; two great-granddaughters, (children of Joshua Warner) Aaliyah and Asia Warner; sisters, Edna Schwartz of Oneonta, Evelyn Cornell of Cobleskill, Beatrice Kenyon of Delhi; a brother, Samuel Tompkins of Stamford; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Tompkins of Stamford. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and her many friends.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her grandson, Joshua Warner; her sisters, Peggy Roda, Patricia Tompkins and Helen Pisichko; and her brother, Harry Tompkins Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at the Stamford Cemetery on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, with the Rev. Peter Mudge, pastor of the Maryland Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford between 2 and 4 and 7 and 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Irene's memory to the Bassett Dialysis Unit, 1 Associate Drive, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Irving N. Markel

SCHENEVUS — Mr. Irving Nelson Markel, 93, passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at The Meadows.

He was born April 11, 1907, in Hinman Hollow, the son of Irving Hughson and Cora (Edinger) Markel.

On Aug. 20, 1926, he married Esther Estella Bloomer at Lena with the bride's uncle, the Rev. Stanton Potter, officiating. She survives.

He lived in the Cooperstown area all of his life.

He was a dairy farmer most of his life and worked for Green Thumb in his later years.

He was a member of the Toddsville Baptist Church, Red Creek Valley Grange, the Farm Bureau, and was a foster parent for many, many years.

Besides his wife, Esther Markel of The Meadows, he is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Cora and Walter Wikoff of Cherry Valley, Ellen and Douglas Coon of Morris and Ann and Norman Morton of Garrattsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sandra Markel of Cooperstown; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Lyon officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Calling hours will be held today, Sept. 5, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Markel's memory may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, Meadows Memorial Fund or the Woodside Hall Memorial Fund.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary E. McStay

GRAND GORGE — Mary E. McStay, 88, of Cronk Lane, Grand Gorge, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born May 6, 1912, in Gilboa, the daughter of Claude and Ellen (Soules) Mattice.

She married James McStay on Sept. 14, 1942, in Bayonne, N.J. He died Nov. 12, 1960.

She was a retired cafeteria person at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, retiring on June 1, 1974.

She was a longtime Grand Gorge resident.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge.

She is survived by seven sisters, Elsie and Kenneth Rockwell of Stamford, Virginia Zimmerman of Stamford, Marjorie and John Barry of Stamford, Hilda and Robert Ferguson of Maryland, Mildred and Roscoe Holland of Hancock, Marie Tompkins of Hobart and Patricia Mattice of Hobart; four brothers, Orson and Mildred Mattice of Grand Gorge, Benny and Barbara Mattice of Hobart, Floyd Mattice of Stamford and Richard Mattice of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Robert Nash, officiating. Burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made in Mary's memory to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Mary C. Brisbane

ANDES — Mary Catherine Brisbane, 88, of Andes passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000.

She was born on June 1, 1912, in Union Grove, the daughter of William H. and Effie (Montgomery) Bush.

She was educated in the Margaretville High School and Delhi Normal School.

She taught for a time in the old one-room schoolhouses.

She had been a resident of this area her entire lifetime.

She was married to Robert M. Brisbane on July 31, 1930, in Delhi. He predeceased her on Sept. 17, 1970.

She helped operate the family farm for many years, and also worked outside the home in several positions for many years. Her last position was with the Green Thumb program, several years at Belleayre Ski Center, retiring about four years ago.

She was very interested in genealogy. She was a member of the AARP.

She is survived by five daughters, Marcia Spencer, Margaret Moshier and Gladys Fairbairn, all of Andes, Dorothy Davis Vanderlyn of West Shokan and Effie Baker VanDyke of Hubbells Corners; 20 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Robert E., 1965 and Marshall W. 1994; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at 11 a.m., at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes, with the Rev. Hayden Walsh, pastor of the Advent Christian Church of Margaretville, officiating. Interment will be in Clovesville Cemetery, Clovesville.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Wednesday evening from 7 to 9, when the family will be in attendance.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society or Delaware County Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes.

Richard Carr

PRATTSVILLE — Richard Carr, 55, of Prattsville, died suddenly Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He had been a head custodian for the Onteora Central School District having worked for the district since 1989 and most recently at the Bennett Elementary School in Boiceville.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served more than 20 years and retiring as a chief in 1986. He had earned the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, four consecutive Good Conduct Medals and Vietnam Service Medal. He had a lifetime membership with the SeaBee Veterans of America.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed western dancing, music, movies and being with his family.

He was born April 18, 1945, son of Katherine (Zacharias) Carr of Phoenicia, and the late George Carr.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife and children, Pamela (Kirk) Carr of Prattsville and Anthony Carr, Carrie Lee  White, and Stephany Nolte all of Prattsville; three brothers, George Paul Carr of Lanesville, Gary of Shandaken and Douglas of Indiana; and a sister, Mary Settine of Phoenicia. Seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Carr II, in 1991.

A service to celebrate the life of Richard Carr will be held on Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Burial will be private in the Halcott Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Prattsville Rescue Squad.

Friends will be received Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, Phoenicia.

John C. Neilson Jr.

PORTLANDVILLE — John C. Neilson Jr., 81, of Portlandville, died Monday evening, Sept. 4, 2000, at his home on Happy Valley Road.

John was born on Oct. 14, 1918, in Queens, a son of John C. and Margarete (Easson) Neilson.

Raised in the New York City area, John was employed for a time by the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue where he maintained machinery and hotel air conditioning equipment. In 1941, he was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served in Company K, 4th Infantry Division, 12th infantry. On June 6, 1944, he was involved in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, landing in the morning on Utah Beach.

For most of his life, John resided in the New York metropolitan area and was employed as a maintenance man in the boiler room of the New York Life Insurance building in Manhattan. In recent years he had been a resident of Hicksville, Long Island, until moving to Portlandville two years ago.

An avid bowler, John was also devoted fan of the New York Mets and always enjoyed going to their games at Shea Stadium.

John is survived by his two sons, Jack Neilson and his wife, Joanne, of Portlandville and Thomas R. Neilson of Leverett, Mass.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was twice widowed and was predeceased by his sister, Peggy  Schmidt, formerly of Queens.

At the request of John's family, services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lila H. Morehand

PITTSFIELD — Lila H. Morehand, 81, of Pittsfield, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in Syracuse, N.Y.

She was born Dec. 29, 1918, in the town of Pittsfield, daughter of Truman Odell and Lizzie (Holmes) Spafford.

She married  Johnson Morehand on July 3, 1947. He died Nov. 17, 1978.

Mrs. Morehand's childhood was spent in Pittsfield and she attended schools in the Pittsfield area.

She attended the Hope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Utica, N.Y., the Immanuel Community Chapel in Sherburne, N.Y., and the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin, N.Y.

She was a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU).

She is survived by a daughter, Alice Morehand of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Lola Spafford of New Berlin; two nephews and several cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Lyle Spafford.

The funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Denis G. Johnson, of the Koinonia Christian Assembly of Rochester, officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

A calling hour will precede the funeral service at noon on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000.

Clyde L. Pitcher Sr.

WESTFORD — Clyde L. Pitcher Sr., 72, of Westford, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 4, 1927, in Maple Valley, the son of Claude and Ethel (Wright) Pitcher.

He was first married to Carmela Chicorelli, then married Edith Archer in May of 1972. She predeceased him in March of 1999.

Mr. Pitcher was a life area resident.

He was employed with Oneonta Grocery Co. for 22 years, retiring in 1994.

Mr. Pitcher was a member of the Westford Fire Department.

He is survived by a son, Clyde L. Pitcher Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Westford; grandchildren, Gina and her husband, Erik Craig of North Carolina and Clyde L. Pitcher III of Westford; two great-granddaughters, Sarah and Amanda Craig; a stepdaughter, Betty, and her husband, Bob Traver, of Franklin; many stepgrandchildren; a sister, Leona, and her husband, Henry Morrison, of Sidney; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Emma Peeters.

Calling hours will be at 3 p.m. until the funeral service time at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Westford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Pitcher to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155; the Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, N.Y.; or the Westford Fire Department, P.O. Box 24, Westford, N.Y. 13488.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Frank Adamowicz

ALBANY — Frank Adamowicz, 100, most recently of Albany and formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Albany County Nursing Home.

He was born Dec. 1, 1899, in Dickson City, Pa., the son of Anthony and Frances Adamowicz.

He married Julia Jezierski on Nov. 3, 1920. She died on Dec. 12, 1955.

Frank attended school in Dickson City, and at the age of 14 went to work in the coal mines. He also played semi-pro baseball and was an exceptional player, winning the title of Home Run Champion for the state of  Pennsylvania. He was made offers by two major league teams but turned them down due to the birth of his daughter, Irene.

In 1944, Frank and his family moved to Oneonta. He went to work for the city of Oneonta, and became the sewage plant operator, a position he held until 1971, when he was forced to retire because of his age.

Concurrently, while working for the city, Frank ran his own business as a stone mason on his off duty time. He continued this after his retirement, well into his late 80s.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta and a former member of the Oneonta Eagles Aerie #1260.

He is survived by his son, Gerald H. Adamowicz of East Chatham; three grandchildren, Beth Jorns of Omaha, Neb., Gerald K. Adamowicz of Portland, Ore., and Jennifer Miller of Allentown, Pa. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Chelsey and Courtney Adamowicz and Jennifer and Brittany Jorns.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Irene Adams in 1995.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call on Saturday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
