Martin S. Sarafin

MOHAWK - Martin J. Sarafin age 72 of Sarafin Road passed away unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon July 10, 2003 in his home.

He was born on August 23, 1930 at home in the town of Columbia, son of the late Martin J. Sr. and Mary Hugick Sarafin. A lifelong resident in the town of Columbia, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. Martin’s life was dairy farming. He owned and operated the Sarafin Dairy Farm until his retirement in 2000. For forty-seven years he was married to the former Marian Jouben.

A member of Saint Joseph’s Church Richfield Springs, he had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. At one time he had served as councilman on the Columbia town board. He was known for being an honest hard workingman who loved the outdoors. In his leisure time he enjoyed Deer and Turkey hunting. He was a friend to many and will be truly missed.

Surviving are two sons; Thomas and his wife Carla Sarafin of Richfield Springs, Martin J. Sarafin III of Liverpool, four daughters; Marsha and her husband Jeff Rooney of Chicago, IL, Mary and her husband Charles Hight of Mohawk, Sandra Sarafin and Elaine Sarafin both of Herkimer, five brothers; Charles Sarafin of FL, Joseph Sarafin of Jordanville, John Sarafin of Herkimer, Leon Sarafin and Paul Sarafin both of Richfield Springs, five sisters; Marian Staruck of Jordanville, Martha Stark of East Herkimer, Catherine Kryszczuk of Utica, Genevieve Buddle and Anna Szeflinski both of Richfield Springs, three grandchildren; Nolan Hight of Mohawk, Abigail and Sarah Rooney both of Chicago, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, Martin was predeceased by a brother Stanley Sarafin.

Funeral service will be on Monday at 9:30 am in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Saint Joseph’s Church Richfield Springs. The Reverend Robert Shinos will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1:00 until 5:00 pm.

Elizabeth Burdick

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Elizabeth Burdick, 91, of East Main Street, formerly of Oneonta and widow of Robert Burdick, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.

She was born Dec. 3, 1912, in Bridgeport, Conn., daughter of the late Steve and Julia Nagyhazi Zold. Elizabeth married Robert Burdick in 1946. They made their home in Oneonta. Mr. Burdick preceded her in death in 1970. While living in Oneonta, she had worked as a housekeeper. After her husband's passing, she moved to Richfield Springs, where she resided until October 2002. She was a resident of Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer, since that time. All who knew her will remember a warm and gentle person who was very fastidious in her appearance. During her lifetime she enjoyed fishing, cooking and socializing with others. She had a strong belief in God and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are her close friends, Mary and John Sadlon of Richfield Springs.

Four brothers and sisters predeceased her.

A funeral service will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, will officiate. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be two hours prior to the funeral service from noon until 2 p.m.

William R. Grup

HARTWICK - William R. Grup, age 76 of County Highway #16, town of Exeter entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 28, 2004.
He was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Gloversville, son of the late William and Florence Chesbrough Grup. William was raised in Gloversville and was a graduate of Gloversville High School. An honorably discharged U.S. Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II. On Dec. 31, 1949, he married the former S. Patricia Lake in Colorado Springs,  Colo., a loving and devoted union of 50 years. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2000. For 33 years Mr. Grup worked in the Shipping and Receiving Department of the Remington Arms Co., retiring in 1983. A resident of Hartwick since 1962, he and his wife came from Ilion.

William had a true sense of community. He had served as Exeter town councilman and for over 16 years as town justice. He was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Schuyler Lake Lodge 162 F&AM, where he served as Master in 1972, a Past Patron in 1972 and member of Arbutus Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Richfield Springs, scout master of the Schuyler Lake Boy Scout Troop, an assistant coach with the Richfield Springs Little League in 1970, as well as a member of the Exeter Historical Society and Winfield Vets Club. All who knew Bill will remember him as a warm, friendly, caring man who was always there to help others. He will be greatly missed by many.

Surviving him are a son, William and his wife Laura Grup of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Sharon and her husband Alan Dutton of Cooperstown, Theresa Schweitzer of Felton, Pa.; one sister, Doris Klusner of Arizona; five grandchildren, Kristen, Kyle Grup, Lindsey and Neil Dutton and Patrick Schweitzer; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Pat, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Grup, one brother, Howard Grup, and a sister, Eleanor Mazano.

Funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Young will officiate. Interment in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. Members of Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday evening for services at 8 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Norman J. Haskell

JORDANVILLE - Norman J. Haskell age 65 of Kingdom Road entered into eternal rest on Thursday afternoon July 29, 2004 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on August 28, 1938 in Endicott, son of the late Charles E. and Eleanor Lord Haskell. Norman was raised in Owego and was a graduate of Owego Free Academy, class of 1956. An honorably discharged US Navy veteran he had served in New Finland. On June 2, 1962 he married the former M. Louise Wiles in North Ghent, PA. They had resided in Owego until 1967 when they moved to Jordanville. Mr. Haskell was an Electrical Designer. For 16 years he worked for Laser Precision that later became GN Nettest in Utica retiring in 2002.

Norman had a deep love for his community and was active both civically and politically. He was a strong supporter of the Jordanville Public Library and board member of the VanHornesville-Jordanville Food Bank. He was currently serving as a councilman for the town of Warren and at one time was the Town Justice for Warren. He had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Federated Church in Jordanville.

To all that knew him they will remember his warm smile and friendly manner. Surviving are his wife of forty-two years M. Louise, two sons, Michael Haskell and his companion Laura Stott of Atlanta, GA, Timothy Haskell and his fiancée Lena Fountain of Mayfield, two daughters, Lauri Haskell and Raymond Ervin of Rome, Kristina Haskell and her fiancée Jamie Davidson of Winston Salem, SC, three brothers and their wives, Robert C. and Sarah Haskell, Richard J. and Gail Haskell, Charles E. Jr. and Wendy Haskell all of Owego, one sister, Suzi and her husband Steve Anderson of Roanoke, VA, five grandchildren, Michael of Idlewilde, CA, Daniel, Kristina, Dakota and Kayla all of Rome, several nieces, nephews and cousins, his father-in-law, Howard Wiles of Athens, PA, five brother-in-laws, Richard Wiles of NC, Gary Wiles, Kenneth Wiles, Ronald Wiles and Clifford Wiles all of PA, four sister-in-laws, Doris Greer of DE, Arlene Farmer of AL, Patricia Middaugh of Owego and Deborah Barnhart of PA. Besides his parents two sisters, Joyce Dukerich and Judy Schobel, preceded him in death.

Funeral service on Monday at 10:00 am in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 west James Street, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Scott Hocking, Pastor of the Federated Church Jordanville officiating. Mr. Haskell will be laid to rest in the Tioga Cemetery, Owego NY on Monday at 3:00 pm. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Jordanville Public Library or the Federated Church Jordanville. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Verne H. Moxley

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Verne Horace Moxley, age 90, of County Highway #24, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday evening July 27, 2004 in his home.

He was born on May 22, 1914 in East Randolph, VT, son of the late Carl and Eliza Davis Moxley. Verne was raised in East Randolph and graduated from high school in Randolph, VT. On September 5, 1937 he married the former Eunice M. Hutchinson at the Moxley Farm in East Randolph.

Verne first worked as a truck driver for logging companies in Randolph. His job brought him through Richfield Springs on Route 20. He liked the area so much that he decided that he would like to live and raise his family here. He worked for Remington Rand, Sperry Rand and UNIVAC in Ilion and Utica.

Mr. Moxley had a close relationship with God and faithfully attended the Richfield Springs Bible Church. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are his beloved wife of sixty-six years Eunice, a son, Fred C. and his wife Janet Moxley of Shippensberg, PA, two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Arthur Christman of Astoria, Queens, Rita and Gary Dawson of Cortland, six grandchildren, Laura and her husband Bruce Heberer, Scott and his wife Kim Scriven all of Johnstown, Danielle and her husband Sean Campbell of Gloversville, Terrence Dawson of Cortland, Tyler and Sarah Moxley of Shippensberg, PA. Three great grandchildren, Joshua Heberer, Eric Heberer and Wesley Scriven, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents a brother, Fordyce Moxley and a sister, Kathryn Stone precede him in death.

Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:00 am in the Richfield Springs Bible Church with the Reverend Alan Miller, Pastor officiating. Mr. Moxley will be laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery immediately after the church service. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Bible Church, Catskill Area Hospice or the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Dean Robertson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Dean Robertson, 40, of County Highway 25A and beloved husband of Monica, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, March 23, 2004 as a result of an accident at the Hanson Aggregate in Jordanville.
He was born on May 18, 1963 in Cooperstown, son of Mortimer and Rowena Smith Robertson. Dean was a lifelong resident of Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield Springs High School with the "Class of 1982." An honorably discharged US Army veteran, he served from 1982 until 1986. On December 17, 1983 he married the former Monica Bobnik in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

After leaving military service, he worked for a year and a half for Ron Douglas. He then went to work for Hanson Aggregates New York, Inc., where he has been employed for the last eighteen years and held the position of Superintendent. He was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, the Richfield Springs Lions Club, The Canadrago Snow Toppers and the Sons of the American Legion, Richfield Springs. He had a strong love for the outdoors and nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and snowmobiling. To all who knew Dean, they will remember his warm smile and friendly manner. He was a friend to many and will never by forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Monica; two sons, Jacob and Jeremy Robertson; his parents, Mortimer and Rowena Robertson; and maternal grandmother, Hazel Smith, all of Richfield Springs; three brothers, David and his wife Lorraine Robertson of Richfield Springs, Dale Robertson of Jordanville, Daniel Robertson of Cooperstown; one sister, Carol and her husband Chet Ainslie of Richfield Springs; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and one grandniece; his mother and father-in-law, Richard and Janet Bobnik of Richfield Springs; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and Wendy Bobnik of Schaumburg, IL, and Kevin and Lisa Bobnik of Richfield Springs.

Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. The Reverend William Harkins, pastor, will officiate. Dean will be laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery later this spring. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs, on Friday from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Jacob and Jeremy Robertson Scholarship Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mathilde Salamacha

BURLINGTON - Mathilde Salamacha, 95, formerly of Salamacha Road, entered into eternal rest on Thursday evening, July 29, 2004, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Born on Feb. 24, 1909, in Oberschefflenz, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Karl and Kristina Zilling. Coming to America as a young girl she had lived in New York City. It was there that she met Steven Salamacha. They were married on Oct. 10, 1930. Mathilde and her husband moved to Hartwick in 1939 and established a dairy farm. They shared a devoted union of 69 years until his passing on Jan. 24, 2000.

She enjoyed the tranquility of the country life, tending her garden, cooking and baking apple cakes from her favorite apple tree that grew outside her window. Her qualities were many, and people were drawn to her and her enduring nature. She was loved by many and easily returned everyone's kindness. She will be truly missed. She was a founding member of St. John's Lutheran Church of West Burlington.

Surviving are a son and his wife, Richard and Judy Salamacha of Burlington; a daughter, Nancy C. Demerre and her husband George of Little Falls; a daughter-in-law, Rosalyn Salamacha of Hammond; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, Steven, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward S. Salamacha on July 28, 1999; four brothers and four sisters.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Mathilde during her stay at Woodside Hall, The Meadows and the care given by Catskill Area Hospice. Their love and compassion will be cherished.

Funeral service will be on Monday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service (from 1-2 p.m.)

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Elda Louise Sheldon

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Elda Louise Sheldon, 94, of Richfield Springs, died on Sunday, May 30, 2004 in The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Elda was born on March 2, 1910 in Richfield Springs, a daughter of the late Mary  Jones and Frank Armstrong. She was predeceased by her husband Leland on March 16, 2004.

Elda devoted her life to caring for her family and home. She was a sweet and gentle woman who faced life’s difficult times and illnesses with great strength, dignity and never a complaint. She looked for and found the good in everyone. Elda loved cooking, baking, tending to her many plants and flowers, crocheting, bird watching, and animals especially cats. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a son, William and his wife Sharleen Sheldon of Richfield Springs; one daughter, Valnette Rossi and her husband Tony of Schenectady; a daughter-in-law, Carol Sheldon of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, Hazel Parsons of Unadilla, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, many nieces nephews and one cousin. Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Edward and Henry Sheldon, a daughter-in-law Mildred Sheldon, a brother, Harry Armstrong, and a sister, Eleanor Gravelding.

A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Springfield Center Cemetery. Reverend William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting will officiate.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped care for Elda and Windy during the past few years, including the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad, Otsego County Visiting Nursing, especially Kathy and Heidi, all the staff at Bassett Healthcare Cooperstown, the staff at the Meadow Cooperstown, and the Catskill Area Hospice. Your wonderful care, compassion and support were greatly appreciated and will always be remembered. Thank You –
