RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Donald Whitbeck, 88, of Main Street, formerly of Hartwick, passed away Sunday night, Sept. 30, 2007, after a long illness.

Edward Lewis Klein

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Edward Lewis Klein, age 79, of Ann Street beloved husband of the late Audrey Virginia Purtill Klein passed away on Wednesday morning February 8, 2006 in his home after a long illness.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs.

Christopher John Fulvio “Chris”

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Christopher John Fulvio “Chris”, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday June 20, 2009 in his home after short illness.

He was born on August 10, 1949 in Albany, son of the late Peter and Helena McShane Fulvio. Chris was raised in Springfield Center where he graduated from Springfield Center High School. He continued his education, earning a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College and went on to Cornell University where he received a master’s degree in hospitality management. Over the years he worked at resorts in  South Carolina, Florida, Virginia and  Pennsylvania But his special fondness for upstate New York and its many lakes made him return to his roots in 2005 where he could enjoy a rural lifestyle.

Mr. Fulvio worked as Manager of Hospitality Services at the Farmers’ Museum and Fennimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, overseeing weddings, special events and food service. He was an expert in wine. To all who knew him, he had many friends at work as well as in the community. He was always willing to pitch in and help out wherever needed and will always be remembered for being a conscientious and dedicated gentleman with a delightfully dry sense of humor.

He had a strong love of the outdoors, in his leisure time Chris enjoyed running, kayaking, golf and cross country skiing. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by a sister Leslie Reidy and her husband Jack of Montrose, PA and one niece Erin Osborne of Brighton, England.

A graveside memorial service, with a celebration of his life to follow will take place 11:30am Saturday in Springfield Center Cemetery at a time to be announced. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the charity of your choice.

Viola Dalton Fuller

 Johnson CITY — Viola Dalton Fuller, 93, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home in  Johnson City.

Born Oct. 21, 1906, in Coventry, Viola was a daughter of the late Oriel J. and Mable L. Barnet Dalton.

In her early years her family also lived in Unadilla Center and Sidney Center before settling on a farm between Sidney Center and Unadilla.

She attended Unadilla High School and Academy, and graduated in 1925, in the first class to wear caps and gowns at the school. The next year she attended Unadilla Teacher Training Class.

In August 1927, she married Theodore Fuller of Unadilla and they had two children, Phebe Ann and Theodore.

Her husband died in 1937 after an extended illness. When her husband became ill in 1933, she took a job as a legal secretary in the law firm of Flaesch & Latham in Unadilla. She enjoyed legal work and in 1942, was appointed official stenographer to the Otsego County Grand Jury when Livingston S. Latham, a partner in the firm, became district attorney and later surrogate judge of Otsego County. Later, she was employed for many years as a secretary at the Unadilla Silo Co.

During her long residence in Unadilla she was a member of the Unadilla Methodist Church and for many years a member of the Odd Fellows and Rebeccas Lodge. Her life spanned nearly the entire 20th century. In 1906, families in her hometown of Coventry traveled mainly by horse and buggy and got their drinking water from a town well. Her family had a bout with the terrible "flu epidemic" of 1918, but survived.

In the Depression years of the 1930s she became a "single mom" ahead of her time, supported two children and guided them through high school and on to college.

She was well-liked and respected by all who knew her in Unadilla.

Viola is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Phebe Ann and Kenneth  Johnson of Vestal; and granddaughters, Anne, Sara and Amy; and son and daughter-in-law, Theodore and Alice Fuller of Pine Grove Mills, Pa.; and granddaughter, Roana. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Winifred and Leonard Lord of Afton; sister, Fannie Ireland of West Winfield; and sister, Verna Carlson of Mullins, S.C.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by sister, Shirley Ireland; brothers, Wesley and Hilton Dalton; and grandson, Eric Fuller.

There will be no private visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church in Unadilla. Private burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Association for Macular Diseases, 210 East 64th St., New York, N.Y. 10021 or to a charity of choice.

Doris F. Smith

CENTRAL SQUARE — Doris F. Smith, 85, of Meadowview Apartments, Central Square, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse.

Born in Fayette, Ala., she had lived in Andes for 24 years and Boaz, Ala., for 15 years before moving to Central Square about 10 years ago.

She was a graduate of Snead Jr. College, Boaz, Ala.

She was a school teacher by trade and was the librarian at Andes Public Library for 10 years.

She was a member of Victory Bible Church, Central Square.

She was predeceased by her husband, Macon Smith, in 1981.

She is survived by a daughter, Eleanor (Ellie) Kite of West Monroe; a son, Donald Smith of West Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Frances  Woods of Tuscumbia, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at the Victory Bible Church, 255 Hungary Lane Road, Central Square.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Victory Bible Church, 255 Hungary Lane Road, Central Square, N.Y. 13036.

Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home Inc., Central Square.

Gerald Smith

STAMFORD — Gerald Smith, 90, of Oneonta Road, Stamford, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born May 4, 1910, in Passaic, N.J., the son of Cornelis and Alice (Verivey) Smith.

He married Annabelle Rosso on July 31, 1948, in Haledon, N.J. Annabelle died on Jan. 27, 1984.

Gerald had been a resident of Stamford for the past 10 years. He was formerly of Summit, where he owned and operated a dairy farm.

Gerald was a World War II United States Army veteran.

He is survived by one niece, Corey Hagen of New York City.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the family plot in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Fairlawn, N.J.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Margaret Dwight

ONEONTA — The Rev. Margaret "Elayne" (Peggi) Dwight, 61, of Oneonta died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at her residence.

She was born May 3, 1939, in Oneonta, the daughter of Arthur and Ida M. (Eggler) Dykeman.

She attended Oneonta and Franklin schools, and during her working career, Elayne was a school math tutor and an engineering draftsman for ECD Bendix.

Elayne graduated from the Pinecrest Bible Training Center in Salisbury Center and for the past 10 years conducted a home ministry, which eventually became known as Overcomer Ministries. Before that, she ministered in various local fellowships, including the Full Gospel Fellowship, which she founded.

She always had a natural talent for art and expressed herself through her paintings.

Elayne is survived by her children, Taryn Hewitt and Sean Dwight of Oneonta; a grandson, Jesse Hewitt of Oneonta; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Thomas  Jones of Oneonta; along with one niece, two nephews and several cousins. She is also survived by her longtime good friend, Cheryl Ann Lower of Oneonta.

A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 15, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Jay T. Francis officiating. Burial will follow in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary E. Ross

WEST DAVENPORT — Mary E. Ross, 82, of West Davenport, died suddenly Wednesday morning, Sept. 13, 2000, at her residence.

She was born May 20, 1918, in New York City, the daughter of William and Amalia (Abol) Smith.

She married James C. Ross on April 14, 1940, in Lindenhurst, Long Island. He survives her.

Mary was a homemaker in her own home. A resident of Lindenhurst, Long Island, from 1923-1968, she had been a Sunday school teacher and member of the Wesleyan Guild of the Grace Methodist Church in Lindenhurst as well as a charter member of the Bay Fire Department in Lindenhurst.

In 1968, she and her family moved to West Davenport. Mary was a member of the West Davenport United Methodist Church, the Davenport VFW Auxiliary Post 487, chaplain of the VFW Auxiliary and a volunteer for the first-grade class at Stamford Central School from 1993-1999.

She was an outstanding mother and grandmother to her family.

Mary is survived by her husband of 60 years, James C. Ross of West Davenport; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanene and Jerald Goncalves of Syracuse and Jamie and Donald Seacord of West Davenport; two sisters, Bella Saverese of Lindenhurst, Long Island, and Selma Burns of Fredericks, Va.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Smith of West Babylon, Long Island; and five grandchildren, William, Matthew and Patrick Goncalves, Pamela Parnapy and Gys Seacord. She is also survived by several loved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in the West Davenport United Methodist Church, West Davenport, with the Rev. Ole Hardy, pastor of the church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Davenport VFW Post 487, Box 41, Davenport Center, N.Y.

Oliver H. Shaw

OTEGO — Mr. Oliver H. Shaw, 81, of Otego, died unexpectedly Monday evening, Sept. 11, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Oneonta.

He was born June 23, 1919, in Meredith, the son of Parker and Mary (Smith) Shaw.

Oliver was married to the former Mary Dohm on March 23, 1998. She survives him.

He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

Oliver was a rural letter carrier for the Otego post office before his retirement.

A resident of Otego since 1955, Oliver had been the owner-operator of Shaws Mobil Service Station, Route 7, Otego in the 1950s.

He had attended the Franklin Methodist Church and was a member of the Otego American Legion. In his pastime, he enjoyed bowling, fishing and playing pool.

Oliver is survived by his wife, Mary E. Dohm Shaw of Otego and the state of Florida; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Joyce Shaw of Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. Mario (Joan) Gazzilli of Earlville and Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Sylvia) Zeidner of West Eaton; one sister, Betty Blanchard; four brothers, Sheldon Shaw, Benjamin Shaw, David Shaw and Paul Shaw; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three stepsons; nine stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchilden.

He was predeceased by a sister, Esther Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Mario J. Gazzilli, son-in-law of Mr. Shaw and pastor of the Earlville and Poolville United Methodist Churches, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, when the family will be present.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220 in memory of Oliver H. Shaw.

David A. Monroe

ONEONTA — David A. Monroe, 49, of Oneonta, died on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, following an extended illness.

He was born on April 22, 1951, in Oneonta, the son of Almon and Eva Barnes Monroe. He was predeceased by his father, Almon.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Eleanor Kirk Monroe of Oneonta; his children, Gerald and Mary Jane Clapper of Laurens, Terry and Shirley Clapper of Milford and Tedd and Barbara Clapper of Hudson; his mother, Eva Barnes Monroe of Oneonta; two sisters, Sandra Banks and her husband, Howard, of Otego and Frances Monroe of Oneonta; four brothers, Carl Monroe of Rome, George Monroe of Sidney, Charles Monroe of Bainbridge and John Monroe and his wife, Sherry, of Otego; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful companion, his dog, Frank.

Mr. Monroe was a lifetime resident of Oneonta who was employed with Bendix of Sidney for more than 10 years until 1986.

He was a United States Army veteran and an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. In addition, he enjoyed tending to his garden of flowers and vegetables.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating. Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday (today) at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 587 Main St., New York Mills, N.Y., in David's memory.

Lena Starkweather

DELHI — Lena E. Starkweather, 93, of Delhi, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born June 27, 1907, in Hazelhurst, Pa., the daughter of Claude and Jenny (Stoddard) Mayes.

She married Walter I. Starkweather Sr. on March 20, 1937. He predeceased her in 1978.

Mrs. Starkweather was a homemaker and mother of five. Her loving smile and sweet spirit will be greatly missed.

Surviving are two sons, Walter I. Starkweather Jr. of Grand Gorge and James F. Starkweather of Stamford; three daughters, Anna M. McCumber of Stamford, Daisy M. Wagner of Walton and Muriel M. Duncan of  White House, Tenn.; one brother, John Mayes of Margaretville; and one sister, Daisy Mayes residing at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Three sisters and one brother predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Wayne Muckel officiating. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

Contributions in her memory may be made to either Delaware County Countryside Care Center or the American Diabetic Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
