Nicolo A. Prato

GUILFORD — Nicolo A. Prato, 72, of Guilford, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 14, 1927, in the Bronx, the son of Pasquale and Agnes (Cicogna) Prato.

He was married to Anna Marie Seus Doyle on June 25, 1972, in Milford.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

Nicolo has been a resident of Guilford since July 1971.

He was a retired union carpenter and for many years owned and operated a flea market in Unadilla.

In his pastime, he enjoyed clamming, crabbing, tag sales, making puzzles, racing pigeons and raising birds.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Prato of Guilford; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Agnes Marie Prato and David Parent of Danbury, Conn., Lillian and Eugene Mancuso of Ronkonkoma and Nicole Prato of Camillus; a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Banha Prato of Centereach; a sister, Anastasia Buonamassa of Glen Cove; and a brother, Nunzio Prato of Smithtown. He is also survived by four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven stepchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

At the request of the Prato family, there will be no formal funeral services or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers or donations, your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Eleanor T. Sullivan

BAINBRIDGE — Eleanor T. Sullivan, 76, of Bainbridge, passed away Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Susquehanna, Pa., to the late Devere and Ruth (Payne) Thomas.

She married Philip M. Sullivan on Sept. 29, 1945. He predeceased her on Feb. 23, 1981.

Eleanor was employed as a lab technician for Bordens Chemical Co., Bainbridge, for more than 25 years and belonged to the Quarter Century Club.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Bainbridge.

Eleanor is survived by her niece, Joyce MacDonald of Brewster, Mass.; nephew, Hugh MacDonald of  Texas; and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at St. John's Catholic Church, Bainbridge, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Donald Bourgeois, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad or St. John's Catholic Church, Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Alta Crandall

STUART, Fla. — Alta Crandall, 90, of Stuart, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Hospice Residence, Stuart, Fla.

She was a native of Oneonta, N.Y., and had been a resident of Stuart for the past three years, coming from Oneonta.

She was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by her husband, A. Raymond Crandall.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Crandall; a• aughter-in-law, Dianne Crandall of Columbiaville, N.Y.; and a grandson, Gregory Crandall.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Wallace &  White Funeral Home Chapel, Stuart, Fla., with Dr. Les Koerselman officiating.

Inurnment will be in Forest Hills Memorial Garden, Palm City, Fla.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Martin & St. Lucie, P.O. Box 1168, Stuart, Fla. 34995.

Rita S. Decker

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Rita Mary (Stone) Decker, 63, of Great Brook Road, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, one day after celebrating her birthday with her family. She is now celebrating with her husband, parents, niece and nephew who passed before her.

Born Sept. 12, 1937, in Smyrna, Rita was the daughter of Elmer and Ruth Foster Stone, and was a graduate of Sherburne High School.

On Sept. 29, 1957, she was married to Charles W. Decker Jr. He predeceased her on Dec. 9, 1992.

On Aug. 5, 1956, she began her career at Norwich Pharmaceuticals Inc., now Proctor & Gamble, of Norwich. She enjoyed her job of 44 years, which earned her a membership in the 1/4 Century Club of Proctor & Gamble.

Mrs. Decker was a member of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin. She was an accomplished pianist and organist who played at several Sherburne- and Smyrna-area churches. Music was one of the many things that were very important to her.

She was a very kind, generous, gentle and sweet woman who loved birds and animals, including her two cats, Buddy and Snoop.

An excellent cook, she enjoyed cooking for friends and family. Rita was always on the go, ready to visit, shop or dine out.

She is survived by her beloved son, Robert Charles Decker of South New Berlin; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Raymond and Ina Stone of Cuyler and Donald Stone of Sherburne; a sister-in-law and her husband, Delores and Raymond Olin of Central Square; three brothers-in-law and their wives, George and Josephine Decker and Richard and Janet Decker, all of North Norwich, and Kenneth and Margaret Decker of South Plymouth; a special loving niece, Freda (Mrs. Robert) Stone-Hoblitz of South New Berlin, who was more like a sister and gave Rita the blessing of independence; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as her cherished friends and colleagues at Proctor & Gamble.

She was predeceased by a niece, Donna Stone Rawson; a nephew, Jerry L. Stone; and a sister-in-law, Doris Stone.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, from the First Baptist Church, South New Berlin, followed by burial at the Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna.

Friends are invited to call at the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne, on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, South New Berlin, N.Y. 13843.

William Kuhr

OTEGO — William Kuhr, 96, of Otego, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta, N.Y.

He was born in Germany on Sept. 10, 1904, the son of Frederick and Marie (Daker) Kuhr.

He was married to the former Frieda (Grotzluschen) Kuhr. Mrs. Kuhr died Aug. 2, 2000.

Mr. Kuhr came to the United States in 1925 from Germany. He moved to  Oklahoma and later to Nebraska, where he was involved in farming. Later, he moved to Delhi, N.Y., where he and his family owned and operated dairy farms. In 1958, the Kuhrs moved to Otego and operated a dairy farm until his retirement some 30 years ago.

He had been associated with many farming organizations during the years as well as the Otego Old Boys Club and Otego Senior Citizens.

He is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, William F. and Beverly Kuhr of Wells Bridge, N.Y., James H. and Joyce Kuhr of Vestal, N.Y., and Louise Kuhr of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; a daughter, Mary Ann Sheldon, of Otego; and two brothers, Ernest Kuhr of Connecticut and Frank Kuhr of Nebraska.

He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard E. Kuhr; and a brother, Hans Kuhr.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Richard Breuninger of Oneonta officiating.

Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Otego Presbyterian Church, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in memory of William Kuhr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Florence T. Burgin

MARGARETVILLE — Florence Todd Burgin, 79, a native and lifelong area resident, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

She was a practicing reflexologist who maintained her therapy clients for about 25 years. She employed homeopathic remedies such as ear candling.

She was an active member of the Arena, Margaretville and Bedell Advent Christian Churches. She was a many-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also the New Kingston Valley Grange. She had been an active quilter with a group in Roxbury, and had a green thumb when it came to tending her flower gardens.

She was born in the Millbrook Valley on Jan. 24, 1921, daughter of the late William and Emma Smith Close.

She was predeceased by her first husband, H. Warner Todd, in 1973, and her second husband, Brian Burgin, in 1981.

Surviving are her daughter, Ellen Gordon, and son, Gaylon Todd, both of Fleischmanns; two grandchildren, Amy Sprague and Christopher Hunter; two great-grandchildren, Raven and Nicholas Sprague; two stepsons, William Burgin of North Carolina and Robert Burgin of Oneonta; and three sisters, Berna Van Benschoten of Margaretville, Sarah Brown of Roscoe and Ruth Fairbairn of Delhi.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Burgin will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at the Advent Christian Church on Orchard Street in Margaretville at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Margaretville Advent Christian Church or the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.

Clinton R. Ellis

BAINBRIDGE — Clinton R. Ellis, 73, of Bainbridge died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Mr. Ellis was born in Trout Creek, the son of the late Ray and the late Minnie Reynolds Ellis.

Mr. Ellis married Bertha Stevens on July 4, 1958, in Bainbridge.

Mr. Ellis was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose #277, Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Ellis of Bainbridge; son, Joseph Ellis of  South Carolina, son, James Ellis of Oxford, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Debra Ellis of Bainbridge, son, Irvin Stevens of Bainbridge; daughter, Sandra Ellis of Bainbridge; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Ann Ellis of Potsdam; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by grandson Dane Ellis, great-grandson Anthony Ross and brothers Dewey and Ray.

Friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at C. H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the C. H. Landers Chapel by the Loyal Order of the Moose #277, Sidney.

Contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Aileen M. Jester

EAST MEREDITH — Aileen M. Jester, 74, of East Meredith died Friday evening, Sept. 15, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Treadwell, the daughter of Arthur and Maude (Kittle) Pinney Sr.

She was married to Wayland F. Jester, who predeceased her.

Aileen was a graduate of the A.L. Kellogg School in Treadwell.

At the age of 40, she entered the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, from which she graduated with honors. Following her graduation, she worked for a period of time at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

In 1985, she retired from Delhi Tech, where she was employed for 20 years.

Aileen enjoyed woodworking, gardening, crafts and all the good times shared with her children and family.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Onna Behrer of Delhi, Marie Broadwell of Tamaqua, Pa., Barrett Jester of Oneonta, Wayne Jester of East Meredith, Marvin and Evelyn Jester of  Jefferson, David and Robin Jester of Medusa, Tanya and Tim Pernice of Meridale, Mary Ellen and Robert Halstead of East Meredith, Michael and Jackie Jester of Davenport and Melodie and Robert Wright of Davenport; 29 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Arthur Pinney Jr. of Treadwell; and two sisters, Almeda Grube of Unadilla and Florence Constable of Sidney Center; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the East Meredith Cemetery.

Friends may call this evening from 7 to 9 at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Meredith Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Mary Pettit

COOPERSTOWN — Mary Pettit (who insisted on being called "May") 75, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at her home on Susquehanna Avenue, Cooperstown.

She was born July 16, 1925, in Dublin, Ireland, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Whelan) Coffey.

May attended High Street School in Dublin. She emigrated to London, England, in 1946, and to the United States in 1954.

In Dublin she worked at the Abbey Theatre and in London at the Odeon Leicester Square Theatre and in the Girl's Land Army. In the United States she worked as a nanny, as a caretaker for the elderly and as a school lunchroom helper. She was also a housewife.

During her residence in the U.S., May lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Alabama, Tennessee, Cobleskill and Hartwick, finally settling in Cooperstown.

May is survived by her sisters, Carmel and Bernadette of London, England; her husband, Joe of Rome; nine nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dear friend, Annie Geiger of Cooperstown.

She was predeceased by a brother, Sean, who was killed in Italy in 1944; a sister, Elizabeth; and another brother, Patrick.

May had a lifelong interest in the theater and attended most of the Broadway musicals. Her dogs were very precious to her and she lavished them with love and attention.

May's Irish wit and loving spirit were infectious. Many friends in the community (including her health-care providers) have been uplifted by the twinkle in her eye and her quick responses.

She was an attendee of the Cooperstown Worship Group of the Religious Society of Friends. Her concept of living is contained in these words: "Oh, the Lord is good to me, and so I thank the Lord for the birds and the bees and the apple trees. Oh, the Lord is good to me."

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at the Lounge in the Church House of the Presbyterian Church, 25 Church St., Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Treatment Center, Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or to a charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

George Tyler

ONEONTA — George Tyler, 75, of Oneonta died on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare Center, Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1925, in Kingsley, Pa., the son of the late Fred and Sarah Sprague Tyler. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Wayne, and a daughter, Kathleen Ann.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sally Williams Tyler of Oneonta; a daughter, Linda Davis, and her husband, Glenn, of Schuyler Lake; two grandchildren, Jennifer Davis and Geoffrey Davis; one great-grandchild, Lucas Davis; one sister, Florence T. Eaton of Oneonta; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law and many cousins, including Jane Huyer and her husband, Gary, of Oneonta, Pat Slocum and her husband, Art, of Oneonta and Marilyn Wickham and her husband, Dick, of Delhi.

Mr. Tyler was a graduate of Charlotte Valley High School before joining the United States Navy in February 1945. He served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Liguria, and received the Victory, American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific medals.

He was well-known in the community for the 17 years he served as the executive manager of the Greater Oneonta Chamber of Commerce. In 1983, he received the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. In addition, he was the owner and operator of Clark's Color Center in Oneonta before his retirement in 1988.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served on the board of trustees and as a ruling elder. He was also a member of the Oneonta Country Club, the Elks Club, a past member of the American Legion, Oneonta F&AM, Oneonta Rotary Club, where he once served as president, and the Oneonta Jaycees, where he served as president, regional vice president of NYS Jaycees, and received the JCI Senatorship in 1962.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at the East Meredith Cemetery, with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. At 11 a.m., following the graveside service, there will be a celebration of George Tyler's life at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and again from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the American Diabetes Association, 7  Washington Square, Albany, N.Y. 12205 or the American Lung Association of Mid-NY P.O. Box 15050, Albany, N.Y. 12212-5050 in George's memory.

Lynn L. Payment

ONEONTA — A memorial service for Lynn L. Payment, who died Aug. 5, 2000, will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta, on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at noon. The Rev. Carola von Wrangel will officiate.
