Kaylyn (Kim) Spezzano Ryan

ONEONTA — Kaylyn (Kim) Spezzano Ryan, 57, of Oneonta, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born June 18, 1943, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of James and Mona Spezzano.

Kim married William E. Ryan on Sept. 4, 1964, in Ann Arbor, Mich. She and her family moved to Oneonta in 1977.

She graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in design, majoring in pottery and sculpture in 1965. She received a master's degree in culture and policy studies from Empire State College, New York, in 1994.

She was employed as an art teacher at Sherburne-Earlville Middle School since September 1998, where she was also the National Junior Honor Society co-adviser and the assistant coach of the modified and varsity cross-country track teams.

Kim was the art teacher at Laurens Central School from 1988 to 1998. During her tenure there, she also served as adviser for the senior class, National Junior Honor Society, yearbook, drama club and elementary and secondary art clubs. She received the 1994 Student-Selected Teacher of the Year Award.

For a short time Kim was executive director of the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts. From 1985-1987, she was the planning specialist for the Oneonta City School District.

She was active in 4-H, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Community Chest and the League of Women Voters, serving as Oneonta League president from 1981-83.

Kim was involved extensively in the arts. She acted in various productions of the State University College at Oneonta's Community Summer Dinner Theater. She sang as member of the St. James' Episcopal Church Choir. She played the piano, guitar and had recently started taking saxophone lessons. She was a charter member of the Susquehanna Valley Quilters.

Her artwork has been displayed around the country and has received several awards. Her quilt, "Freedom's Eagle," won the New York state quilting competition held in honor of the bicentennial of the United States.

Other interests included cooking and gardening. Kim grew her own herbs and vegetables, organized cookie exchanges and gave food to local charities. In 1980, she won the 20th Annual Daily Star Cooking Contest.

Survivors include her husband, William E. Ryan, of Oneonta; son, William Ryan Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kaarin Anderson Ryan of Setauket; daughter, Katherine Ryan of Schenectady; son, John P. Ryan of Oneonta, a student at the State University College at Oswego; and grandchildren, Joshua and Anneli Ryan. She is also survived by her parents, James S. Spezzano of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Mona Spezzano of Dearborn, Mich.

A Requiem Memorial Mass to celebrate the life of Kim will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church in Oneonta at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000. The family will be receiving friends in the Great Hall following the services.

Scholarships in Kim's memory are being organized at both Laurens and Sherburne-Earlville schools.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kim Ryan Scholarship Fund, Sherburne-Earlville Middle School, School Street, Sherburne, N.Y. 13460, or Laurens Central School, 64 Main St., Laurens, N.Y. 13796.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home.

Gary A. Gransbury

ONEONTA — Retired state Policeman Gary A. Gransbury, 61, of Southside Oneonta, died peacefully with his family at his home Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, after a courageous battle with a long illness.

Gary was born June 8, 1939, in Walton, a son of Paul and Helen (Coyne) Gransbury. Mr. Paul Gransbury Sr. predeceased his son several years ago.

Gary Gransbury was a graduate of Walton High School in 1957.

He married Janet Moore on Nov. 17, 1959, in Leicester, England.

After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1962, Gary and Janet moved from England to New York state, ultimately settling in Southside Oneonta in 1966.

After being accepted into the New York State Police Academy, Gary became a state trooper in 1964, serving at the Troop C Oneonta station until his retirement in 1982.

Following retirement, Gary and Janet were fortunate to enjoy their passion for travel. His main interest included his beloved wife, children and grandchildren.

He was a member for many years of the Oneonta Elks Club and the American Legion Post No. 259 as well as the Leatherstocking Chapter of the Association of Former New York State Troopers. Mr. Gransbury was also an avid sportsman.

His loving wife, Janet, of Oneonta, survives Gary. He was dearly loved by sons John (and Debra) of Virginia Beach, Va., C. Thomas of Oneonta and Steven (and Elizabeth) of Marblehead, Mass. Additionally grandchildren, Michelle, Ryan, Adam and Nicholas of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mackenzie of Syracuse will miss him. Mr. Gransbury is also survived by his mother, Helen Coyne Adams (and the late Frederick Adams Sr.), of Kent Cliffs, Carmel; brother, Paul Gransbury (and Ruthann) of Carlsbad,  Calif.; sister, Loraine Renzler (and Kenneth) of Holmes; sister, Colleen Moran (and Peter) of Owego; stepbrother, Frederick Adams Jr. (and Ethel) of Kent Cliffs, Carmel; and stepsister, Delores Benante (and Joseph) of Austin,  Texas. Several nieces and nephews, friends and family in the United Kingdom will also miss him.

Calling hours will be held at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 and the New York State Police Trooper Foundation, 19 British American Blvd., Latham, N.Y. 12110 in memory of Gary A. Gransbury

Barbara Gladstone

WALTON — Barbara J. Gladstone, 57, a resident of Walton, died at her home surrounded by family and friends Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000.

Barbara was born March 5, 1943, in Sparta, N.J., the daughter of Louis and Violet Alexander Sweller.

She married Merton "Butch" Gladstone on Sept. 8, 1985. He survives her.

Before Barbara's illness, she was a home health-care worker in the area. Besides the love of doing health care, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and was an avid lover of animals, including her dogs, Toby and Dutch.

Barbara was a kind, friendly and thoughtful person. She was always an optimist, particularly all through her recent surgery for a double-lung transplant. In spite of all the complications from the surgery, her optimism and love for life didn't cease.

Her immediate survivors besides her husband, "Butch," are her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Warren Peck; and granddaughters, April and Angela. Also surviving are her stepsons, Mark, Mike, Matt and Ward Gladstone.

A funeral service will be held graveside for family and friends at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in Walton Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Bokel, pastor of Plymouth Community Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, Catskill Area Hospice, Delaware County Humane Society, Peace Plantation or Plymouth Community Church.

Ethel A. Michaels

COOPERSTOWN — A funeral service for Ethel A. Michaels, who died Sept. 20, 2000, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Janet Parris Smith

SIDNEY — Janet Parris Smith, a resident at the Garden View Manor Home for Adults, Otego, and a former resident of Liberty Street, Sidney, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 10, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was a longtime Sidney resident and retired from the Bendix Corp., Sidney.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Morris Horton of Sidney; a niece, Cynthia Wilcox of Windsor; and a great-nephew, Zachary Wilcox of Windsor.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of her family in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport. Friends are invited to call from 9 a.m. to service time at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the United Methodist Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Dorothy G. Perry

FRANKLIN — Dorothy G. Perry, 81, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Dorothy was born Aug. 21, 1919, in New York City, the daughter of Richard J. and Mary C. (Wettlauffer) Maher.

She married George J. Perry on Oct. 13, 1938, in New York City. He died Jan. 23, 1994.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta.

Survivors are a son, George Perry, of Holly Springs, N.C.; her daughters, Jane C. Perry of Franklin, Dorothy Downs and her husband, William, of Ballston Spa, Alice Nowhitney and her husband, John, of Oneonta and Denise Perry of Oneonta; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Richard Maher of Fort Meyers, Fla., Rita Fortunato of Blauvelt, Veronica Maher of Flushing, Charles Maher of Brookfield, Conn., James Maher of Venice, Fla., and Joseph Maher of Farmingdale, Long Island; and along with several nieces and nephews.

A brother, William Maher, predeceased her.

A service to celebrate the life of Dorothy G. Perry will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours, and in lieu of flowers, the family's choice of memorial contributions is to the Franklin Fire Emergency Squad, Franklin, N.Y. 13775.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Clyde E. Grube

UNADILLA — Clyde E. Grube, 79, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at his residence.

He was born April 13, 1921, in Pittsford, the son of George and Minnie (Ernst) Grube.

He was married to Leona Valentine on Aug. 20, 1944, in Milford.

Mr. Grube has been a 54-year resident of Unadilla and at one time owned and operated a dairy farm in Unadilla. In 1986, he retired from Agway of Oneonta.

For many years, he was a caretaker and a trustee of the Sand Hill Cemetery.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Leona Grube, of Unadilla; his sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Marie Grube of Walton and Robert and Judy Grube of Greene; his stepmother, Ruth Hendricks, of Otego; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Earl Grube, in 1988.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Lola M. Weed

GILBOA — Miss Lola M. Weed, 106, formerly of Gilboa, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home, Stamford, where she had resided for the past six years.

Miss Weed was born in Gilboa on Aug. 3, 1894, a daughter of Veldmar and Lettie Tuttle Weed.

She was a housekeeper and a member of the Flat Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving Miss Weed are several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in Gilboa Cemetery, Gilboa, with the Rev. Lewis Friend, interim pastor of the Flat Creek Baptist Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in Miss Weed's memory may be made to the Flat Creek Baptist Church, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076.

Funeral arrangements are by the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh, N.Y. 12122.

Patricia Bouck

FLEISCHMANNS — Patricia Bouck, a native and lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

Many years ago she worked at Mayes' Veneer Plant in Fleischmanns. She had been a member of the Senior Citizens' Club of Fleischmanns and was an avid bowler who belonged to the Delaware-Greene Bowling League, Margaretville Chapter.

She was born Dec. 5, 1934, in Halcott Center, daughter of the late Harold and Marguerite Rosa Bouck.

She was predeceased by her brother, Scott Bouck.

Surviving are dear friends Mrs. Jean George of Margaretville and Aida Harkey of Fleischmanns.

A service to celebrate the life of Patricia Bouck will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia. Burial will be in the Halcottsville Cemetery. Friends will be received Saturday morning before the service at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.

Muriel M. Druse

FOREST HILL, Md. — Muriel M. (nee Connors) Druse of Forest Hills, Md., formerly of Richfield Springs, N.Y., died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000.

She was the beloved wife of the late Stanley E. Druse, devoted mother of the late Myrna M. Druse and dear sister of the late Mae E. Connors and Ann A. Angier.

Graveside services will be held at St. Joseph's Church Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000.

Dawn M. Sprague

ONEONTA — Dawn Marion Sprague, 49, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 17, 1950, in Ithaca, N.Y., a daughter of Maurice and Doris (Cross) Marion.

She married William A. Sprague Jr. on June 3, 1977, in Rockville, Md.

Mrs. Sprague and her husband owned and operated Billy Beef"s Restaurant in Oneonta. Previously, she was a stewardess for Delta Airlines.

She loved her family and enjoyed working with arts and crafts and her flower garden.

She lived in Oneonta since 1978 and was a former resident of Silver Spring, Md., and Ithaca.

She is survived by her husband, at home; a son, William A. Sprague III and a daughter, Sarah D. Sprague, both at home; a step-daughter, Melissa Sprague and her friend, David Jubinville of La Quinta,  Calif.; two brothers and their wives, Rowland and Connie Marion of Lafayette, N.Y., and Wayne and Marj Marion of Olympia, Wash.; a sister, Karen Marion and her friend Bruce Shaw of Pittsfield, Vt.; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson officiating.

Burial will by in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Those who wish may make contributions to Dollars for Scholars, Oneonta High School, East Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 for a scholarship to be awarded in memory of Dawn.

Ethel A. Michaels

COOPERSTOWN — Ethel A. Michaels, 102, formerly of Cooperstown, died Sept. 20, 2000, in Tucson, Ariz.

Ethel was born in New York City on July 22, 1898, a daughter of Henry and Florence (Storm) Apman.

Ethel came to Cooperstown from New York City at the age of 16, where she attended Cooperstown High School. Right after high school, she was asked to work in the First National Bank (now Key Bank), where she was in charge of a big ledger. She was replacing someone who went to fight in World War I.

She lived on River Street and used to take visitors out in a rowboat and row to Kingfisher Tower. Ethel also used to read poetry at Indian Mound on Main Street and in the winter would toboggan down from Woodside Hall to Main Street.

In 1919, she married William H. Michael Jr. His father owned the meat market on Main Street, where the Doubleday Cafe is today.

Ethel and William had two children.

The Michaels soon moved to New York City and then lived in Westchester County, where she did a lot of volunteer work during World War II, working primarily with the Air Raid Warning Center in  White Plains. She was a Girl Scout commissioner in Pleasantville, worked in the Horace Greely Gift Shop in Chappaqua, managed a gift shop of the same name in Bedford Village and later did a lot of gardening at their 8-acre home in the same town.

The couple retired before returning to Cooperstown in 1969. William passed away in 1980. Ethel moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1999 to be with her daughter, Mary Michaels McCauley.

Ethel is survived by one daughter, Mary M. McCauley of Tucson, Ariz.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Lorna McCauley Irwin and her husband, Jim, of Jerome, Idaho, and Heather McCauley Fisher and her husband, Leo, of Yuma, Ariz., and five great-grandchildren, Irwin of Northbridge,  Calif., Kyle and Ross Irwin of Jerome, Idaho, Joshua Fisher of Tucson, Ariz., and Adam Fisher of Yuma, Ariz.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating. A private burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
