Shirley A. Eustis

DELHI — Shirley A. Eustis, 75, of Delside Acres, Delhi, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Binghamton General Hospital.

The daughter of the late Harold M. and Alta Emma (Hall) Haught, she was born Feb. 16, 1925, in  Washington, Pa.

She was educated in public schools, attended  Washington Seminary for Women and subsequently received her nurse's training at  Washington Hospital School for Nursing.

She married Charles A. Eustis on April 23, 1947.

A registered nurse, Shirley was employed for 26 years at Nyack Hospital, retiring in 1986.

Formerly of Rockland County, where she was a resident of West Nyack for 29 years, she moved to Delhi in 1989. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its Women's Association and the Donald W. Gleason Unit 190, American Legion Auxiliary, of which she served as historian.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Charles A. Eustis; two sons, Harold and his wife, Jane (Curley) Eustis, of Delhi and Gary Eustis of New Windsor; two grandchildren, Colin and Emily; two sisters, Esther Brookman of  Washington, Pa., and Jane Allan of Amherst, Mass.; one nephew; and three nieces.

Friends are invited to call at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, on Sunday, Oct. 15, when the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. American Legion Auxiliary services will be conducted at 7:45 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, at the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Arvid Whitmore. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, Heart Association, Diabetes Association or the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Bolish Stankiewicz

ROCHESTER, N.H. — Bolish Stankiewicz, 88, of 36 Hancock St., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Rochester Manor, Rochester, N.H., after a long period of failing health.

Mr. Stankiewicz was born in Claremont, N.H., on Dec. 13, 1911, the son of Ignacy and Helen (Gintoff ) Stankiewicz and had lived in Rochester since 1942, moving from Exeter, N.H.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Michelle Stankiewicz and Frank Stankiewicz, as well as by two grandsons, John Kenneth Stankiewicz and Bruce Stankiewicz.

He was a graduate of Newport High School in Newport, N.H., and a retired shoe worker, working in the local factories of Dover, Farmington, Rochester and Exeter.

Following his retirement, he worked for the Thompson Tool Co. in Rochester for five years and worked for a brief period at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a lifelong member of the Rochester Lodge of Elks and a member of the Rochester Senior Citizens Club.

Surviving members of the family include his wife of 62 years, Mary Stankiewicz, of Rochester, N.H.; one son, John Stankiewicz, of Oneonta; one granddaughter, Jill, and her husband, Thomas King, of Otego; one great-granddaughter, Emilie King, and one great-grandson, Kobey King, both of Otego; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the H. J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 N. Main St., Rochester, N.H., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church in Rochester, followed by burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, also in Rochester.

Hilda Wood

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Hilda Wood, 90, formerly of 14 Park St., died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 12, 2000, in The Meadows, town of Middlefield.

Born March 11, 1910, in Miller Mills, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Helen Getman Bailey.

A lifelong area resident, she was educated in the Miller Mills School.

On June 9, 1928, she married Lewis E. Wood in the home of her parents in Cedarville. They enjoyed a loving and devoted union of 41 years until his passing April 11, 1969.

Besides raising a family and caring for her husband, for 20 years she worked for the A&P Co. in Richfield Springs, retiring in 1972.

She was a member of the Springfield Center Baptist Church.

Surviving her are a son, Gordon, and his wife, Veronica Wood, of Old Forge; one daughter, Doris, and her husband, Arthur "Stub" Miller, of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Lewis, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Bailey in 1972 and Andrew Bailey in 1984; and two grandchildren, Gordon Wood Jr. and Robert "Hoss" Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Rex Fullman, pastor of the Springfield Center Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial, in Lakeview Cemetery, will by private and at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

The family requests as an alternative to flowers, donations to the Springfield Center Baptist Church be considered.

Ellen J. Olsen

BLOOMVILLE — Ellen J. Olsen, 90, of Doonan's Corners, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford. Born in the Bronx on Aug. 10, 1910, she was the daughter of Julius and Helga Nelson.

Ellen married Kaj A. Olsen on Sept. 18, 1933. In October 1956, they moved to what was known as The  White House Farm, where together they owned and operated a dairy farm. Ellen also ran a boarding house on the farm for many years.

She was a member of the Eastern Star as well as the Bloomville Grange No.1362 and the Delaware County Farm Bureau.

Predeceased by her husband on Dec. 5, 1973, she is survived by a son, Kenneth Olsen, of Bloomville; two daughters, Key E. Olsen of Greene and Doris (Olsen) Markus and her husband, Alex, of East Meredith; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Carol Doxie, Julie Doxie, Rebecca (Olsen) Norvell and her husband, Robert, Katrina, Robert and Elizabeth Olsen, John Markus and his son, Jordan, Thomas Markus, his wife, Connie, and their daughter, Samantha, Susan (Markus) Smith and her husband, Stephen, and Artur (A.J.) Markus; a sister, Martha Mosier, of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

The family will be having a private memorial service at the North Kortright Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Bloomville Emergency Squad or to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y.

Ross E. Niles

BAINBRIDGE — Ross E. Niles, 46, of county Route 38, Bainbridge, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in the town of Guilford, N.Y.

He was born Nov. 4, 1953, in Sidney, N.Y., the son of Donald and Phyllis Cutting Niles.

On June 11, 1977, he married Nancy Brown in Oneonta, N.Y.

Mr. Niles was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Ross served his country from 1975 until his discharge in 1979 with the U.S. Army.

Ross is survived by his wife, Nancy Brown Niles, of Bainbridge; his daughter, Kristen 0. Niles, of Bainbridge; a son, Eric M. Niles, of Bainbridge; his parents, Donald and Phyllis Niles, of Bainbridge; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lenora and Steve Niles of Salem, N.Y., and Denise Niles of Brooklyn; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Donald Niles of Locke, N.Y., and Phillip and Janie Niles, also of Locke. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the First Baptist Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of his family.

Friends are invited to call after 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. His family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name maybe made to the athletics department at the Bainbridge-Guilford High School, Bainbridge.

Kathleen Searby

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mrs. Kathleen Searby, 82, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 24, 1918, in Bellmore, Long Island, the daughter of James and Anna (Kelly) Begley.

In February 1943, she married Thomas J. Searby. He predeceased her in 1999.

Mrs. Searby is survived by five sons, Thomas and Robert, both of Vienna, Va., Patrick of Petersburgh, N.Y., Kenneth of Utrecht, the Netherlands, and Denis of Stockholm, Sweden; two daughters, Kathy of Albuquerque, N.M., and Marie Cristobal of Coral Springs, Fla.; two brothers, Thomas Begley of Ocala, Fla., and Enes Begley of Normal, Ill.; a sister, Anna-May Hill of Vestal, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Blessed Sacrament Church, Springfield Center, with Father Don Vittengl officiating.

Burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2000, with Rosary and prayers conducted at 8:30 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mrs. Searby's memory may be made to the Catholic Daughters, c/o Blessed Sacrament Church, Springfield Center.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Bertha Terpening

FREDERICK, Md. — Mrs. Bertha Bernice Terpening, 92, formerly of Cherry Valley, N.Y., but for the past two years a resident of Frederick, Md., died Thursday Oct. 12, 2000, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

She was the wife of Charles Cornelius Terpening, who died in 1992.

Born April 16, 1908, in Winchendon, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Colon and Eva A. Hart Brodie.

A member of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, N.Y., she was employed as a seamstress at the Richmondville Glove Factory until her retirement in 1980.

Surviving is her daughter, Elaine Fassett, and husband, Lewis, of Gansevoort, N.Y.; two sons, Dennis L. Terpening and his wife, Mary, of Ijamsville, Md., and Barry L. Terpening and his wife, Donna, of Troy,  Texas. Nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Services and burial will be private in South Valley Memorial Cemetery, South Valley, N.Y.

Diane M. Sprague

ONEONTA — Diane Marion Sprague, 49, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 17, 1950, in Ithaca, a daughter of Maurice and Doris (Cross) Marion.

She married William A. Sprague Jr. on June 3, 1977, in Rockville, Md.

Mrs. Sprague and her husband owned and operated Billy Beef's Restaurant in Oneonta. Previously, she was a stewardess for Delta Airlines.

She loved her family and enjoyed working with arts and crafts and her flower garden.

She lived in Oneonta since 1978, and was a former resident of Silver Spring, Md., and Ithaca.

She is survived by her husband, at home; a son, William A. Sprague III and a daughter, Sarah D. Sprague, both at home; a step-daughter, Melissa Sprague and her friend, David Jubinville of La Quinta,  Calif.; and a stepson and his wife, Eric and Kim Sprague of Albany; two brothers and their wives, Rowland and Connie Marion of Lafayette and Wayne and Marj Marion of Olympia, Wash.; a sister, Karen Marion and her friend, Bruce Shaw of Pittsfield, Vt.; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends called Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Those who wish may make contributions to Dollars for Scholars, Oneonta High School, East Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 for a scholarship to be awarded in memory of Diane.

Flora Elizabeth Roe

SIDNEY — Flora "Betty" Roe, 84, a resident at The Meadows, Cooperstown, passed away early Saturday morning, Oct. 14, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Susquehanna, Pa., the daughter of the late Lemuel and Flora Gunn Roe.

Betty was a longtime Sidney resident and had lived in Cooperstown for the past three years.

From 1942, until her retirement in February 1979, she was an inspector for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, and the I.A.M.&A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elva Hall of Otego and Miss Letha Roe of Unadilla; also, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her sister, Joyce Wells, and brother, Karr W. Roe, predeceased her.

At her request, private services will be held at the convenience of her family in the Newman Cemetery, Great Bend, Pa.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838 or to the Memorial Fund at The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y.

Morse J. Griffin

ROXBURY — Morse J. Griffin, 88, of Roxbury died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the home of his birth on Main Street, Roxbury.

He was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Roxbury, son of James A. Griffin and Matilda Morse.

He was well-known for doing lawn work for people in the area He was a lifelong resident of Roxbury.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Roxbury and a former member of the Delaware Valley Grange.

He is survived by his nephew, James Eignor of Scotia, and his extended family, Sid and Karen Wallace, who have taken care of him since 1987.

He was predeceased by two sisters: Irma Mae Griffin, who died Oct. 26, 1987, and Mary Eignor, who died Feb. 2, 1989.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made in memory of Morse Griffin to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, Roxbury.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Louise Tardiff

WHITESBORO — Louise Tardiff, 72, of Whitesboro died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the Abraham House in Utica.

She was born May 3, 1928, in Westford, the daughter of the late Lewis and Hazel (Morrison) Dutcher.

Louise was a graduate of Draper Central School in Schenevus and of the State College for Teachers at Albany, now the State University at Albany.

She married Geno Paul Albergine in 1950. He predeceased her. In 1991, she married Richard C. Tardiff.

She is survived by her husband, Richard C. Tardiff of Whitesboro; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Neil and David Albergine and Masami Shimizu, all of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Albergine and Fabrizio Maci; and two granddaughters, Simona and Alessandra, all of Fermingnano, Italy; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Laurrel Maksel of Pattersonville and Lois and William Whitney of Esperance; eight stepsons and stepdaughters of the Tardiff family; a niece, a nephew and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at the Elk Creek Cemetery, Elk Creek, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, with the Rev. Edward Golding, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Whitesboro at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Abraham Hospice House, 1203 Kimble St., Utica, N.Y. 13501.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
