Anna T. Wohlfert

WEST LAURENS — Anna T. Wohlfert, 86, of West Laurens, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Anna was born on April 11, 1914, in Schildberg, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Zorn.

Anna came to the United States in 1923 with her sister Mitzie, brother, Joseph F. and her mother, Mary, to settle in Cleveland, Ohio.

Anna is survived by her son, Charles H. Wohlfert of Port Crane; a brother, Joseph F. Zorn of Sandy, Ore.; and his daughter, Patricia Sorensen and her family. She is also survived by many friends locally and afar.

She is predeceased by her sister, Mitzie; her mother and father; and by her husband, Charles Wohlfert, whom she married in June of 1942. He died in 1986.

Anna was a member to the West Laurens Grange since 1949 and was also a member of the West Laurens Fire Auxiliary, the West Laurens Homemakers, the Laurens Senior Citizens Club and the West Laurens Bennett Cemetery Association.

Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. Graveside services will be at the Bennett Cemetery in West Laurens on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Longobucco of St. Mary's R.C. Church officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Evelyn Bennett

ENDICOTT — Evelyn Maude Bennett, 79, formerly of Oneonta and Otego, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at the Ideal Senior Living Center in Endicott.

She was born in Edmeston, the daughter of Ford Nichols and Myrtle (Wright) Nichols Fredenburg.

She was married to Alfred Bennett on Aug. 20, 1946. He died June 3, 1987.

She worked for the Scintilla Corp. during World War II. She worked for Mold-A-Matic as a machine operator for a period of time and most recently for Astrocom, from which she retired in 1983. She also assisted her husband, Alfred, as secretary and treasurer of their business, Bennett Trucking, for several years.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Kenneth Fredenburg and his wife, Shelly, of Saxonburg, Pa., Donald Fredenburg and his wife, Sally, of Oneonta, Douglas Bennett and his wife, Shirley, of Milford, Robert Bennett and his wife, Sandra, of Otego, C. David Bennett and his wife, JoAnn, of Milford, Janice Lottermann and her husband, Michael, of Oneonta, Patrice Palmer and her husband, Leon, of Newark Valley, and Candice Eichhorn and her husband, Timothy, of Cassville; her sister, Sylvia Cunniff of Kissimmee, Fla.; and a stepsister, Helen Lockwood of Gloversville. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Percy Nichols and Leslie Fredenburg, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. John Buskey of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston officiating. Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday. Interment will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

It was Evelyn's request that those who wish, make donations to the Delaware County Humane Society in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Clarence Higgins

ALBANY — Clarence B. Higgins Jr., decorated naval aviator, lawyer and jazz pianist, passed away Thursday in Albany. He was 80 years old and lived in Gilboa, having retired there from Bronxville.

In World War II, Mr. Higgins flew carrier missions off the U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay as a torpedo bomber pilot

lieutenant (JG) in the battles at Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Lingayen Gulf. He received the
Distinguished Flying Cross and six air medals: Navy unit citation — two stars, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific — three stars and Philippine Liberation — one star.

A lawyer in tax and corporate reorganization, Mr. Higgins was also a pianist of note, playing in New York nightclubs throughout the '50s and '60s and at various events in recent years as an accompanist and entertainer.

Mr. Higgins was born on March 24, 1920, in Milton, Mass. He graduated from Deerfield Academy, Duke University and Boston University School of Law. He received a master's of law from Columbia University.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Greta) Higgins; and his former wife, Carol Bluhme Higgins; and their three children, Heather, Ariel and Scott; and a son, Kim Higgins Townsend, by his earlier marriage to Theresa DeMarco Townsend.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of his family.

Deborah L. Taylor

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Deborah L. Taylor, (nee Kohinke), 48, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000.

She was the beloved wife of Gary M. Taylor; devoted mother of Adrienne M., G. Ryan and Mike A. Taylor; dear daughter of Marion and the late Rev. Theodore Kohinke Jr.; and sister of Kathy, Dorothy, Carol, Marilyn, Ted, Ed, Steve and the late Clayton Kohinke. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y.

A service will be at T.P.  White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45230 on Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. Friends may call Friday from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Birney and Salem Road, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Pearl Livingston

OTEGO — Pearl Livingston of Otego, who died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, is survived by three sisters, Shirley Truesdell of Norwich, Rose Sanders of South New Berlin and Mary Whitmore of Greene.

Mrs. Livingston was predeceased by her husband, Charles; her sister, Thelma Brooker; and her brother, Ivan.

David S. Cooper

ONEONTA — David S. Cooper, 90, of Oneonta, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 2, 1909, in Brooklyn, the son of Samuel and Mary (Byrnes) Cooper.

He married Rachel M. Varano on July 24, 1937, in New York City. She died on Feb. 15, 1989. On Oct. 8, 1995, he married Anne M. Super, who died on July 21, 2000.

Dave was the manager of JJ Newberry's in Oneonta from 1944 to 1965. In 1966, he became involved with the city of Oneonta Urban Renewal program and served as its director up until his retirement in 1979.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church and a life member of the John F. Kennedy Council of the Knights Of Columbus. He also was a member of the Oneonta Rotary Club.

Dave is survived by his loving family, which includes his children and their spouses, Joe and Judy Cooper of Glastonbury, Conn., Martha Cooper of Charlottesville, Va., Jim and Connie Holmes of Riga, Latvia, John and Joan Cooper of McKees Rocks, Pa., Roger and Donna Cooper of Colonie and Barbara and Gary Golja of Worcester; his 11 grandchildren, Christopher Cooper, Meredith Ruppert, Matthew Cooper, Susan Kenny, Jennifer Coleman, Dana Cooper, Rachel Holmes, Rebecca Wentzel, Karen Cooper, Kelly Cooper and Rachel Golja; his six great-grandchildren, Noah and Lucy Cooper-Hauser, Mackenzie and Emma Ruppert and John and Cooper Kenny; his sister, Edith Brown of Brooklyn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, David M. Cooper, in 1990.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call on Sunday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 2 to 5 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Greater Connecticut Chapter, Newington, Conn. 06111.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

George Shumway

ONEONTA — George Richard Shumway, 74, of Oneonta, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.

He was born March 9, 1926, in Hartwick the son of Grant U. and Florence R. (Wright) Shumway.

He married Madeline Shillington on May 2, 1948, in West Oneonta.

George served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked in the maintenance department at Homer Folks Hospital for 22 years.

After the closing of the hospital, he worked in the maintenance department at the State University College at Oneonta for seven years. He also worked for the city of Oneonta for the past several years and was caretaker of the Swart-Wilcox House.

George was a longtime member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, and was a co-founder of the Christian Service Brigade. He had also served as a trustee for the church.

He was a dedicated faithful servant to his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

George was an avid sportsman.

George is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Madeline Shumway of Oneonta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Keith Valk of Oneonta and Janis and Chris Murray of Eastport, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Diane Shumway of Southampton and John and Janet Shumway of Hobson, Mont.; one brother and sister-in-law, Grant and Sharon Shumway of Oneonta; grandchildren, Kaleb and Julie Valk of Oneonta, Justin Valk of Oneonta, Erek and Meredith Shumway of Southampton, Wyatt and David Shumway of Hobson, Mont., Joshua Shumway, Ryan and Shelby Corwin and Dakota Murray of Eastport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was predeceased by a sister, Beatrice Daniels; and two brothers, Arnold and Maynard Shumway.

Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta. The Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Christian Service Brigade Camp Fund, c/o Wayne Wright, Main Street Baptist Church, 333 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in loving memory of George Richard Shumway.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert A. Moorby

WEST DAVENPORT — Robert A. Moorby, 57, of West Davenport, died at his home on Thursday Oct. 19, 2000.

He was born on June 23, 1943, in Oneonta, the son of Alfred and Maida Munson Moorby. He was predeceased by his father, Alfred.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Byam Moorby of West Davenport; his mother, Maida Moorby of Delaware County Country Care Center; his children, Katherine "Kate" Kopf and her husband, Brian, of Ashboro, N.C., Christopher Moorby and his wife, Debra, of Davenport and Allen Moorby and his wife, Karen, of Albany; grandchildren, Nathan and Kyle Moorby and Cassandra Kopf; his in-laws, Wayne and Rebeca Byam, Georgieanna and Randy Lambrecht, Floyd and Judith Byam, and Keith and Lark Byam, all of the Oneonta area; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Moorby was a lifetime resident of the area.

He was employed with the State of New York Department of Military and Naval Affairs as a superintendent in Oneonta.

He was a 20-year veteran of the National Guard.

He was a bowler in the Fraternal League for many years, was the commissioner of Pindars Corners Fire Department and was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish.

He was a member of the West Davenport United Methodist Church and was a longtime trustee.

He will be remembered as a helpful neighbor to anyone in need.

Services will be 2:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at the West Davenport United Methodist Church with the Rev. Olu Harding and the Rev. William Moorby, cousin of Robert, officiating.

Burial will be in Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bookhout Funeral Home 357 Main St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice, the Alzheimer's Foundation or the American Cancer Society in Robert's memory.

William H. Steinert

MOUNT UPTON — William H. Steinert, 72, of Route 8, Mount Upton, N.Y., passed away Friday morning, Oct. 20, 2000, at his residence. He was formerly of Nanuet and Florida, N.Y.

He was born May 30, 1928, in Port Chester, N.Y.

Bill was the son of the late Henry Steinert and Ruth Dunham.

His wife, Joyce E. Steinert, predeceased him in 1975.

He worked as a tree surgeon for more than 20 years and was most recently caretaker for the Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton.

Bill was a member of the American Kennel Club. He bred and showed Alaskan Malamutes for several years.

He was a man with varied interests and activities, especially music and animals, and he was an avid fly fisherman.

He was beloved father of Cynthia and Kenneth Iverson of Palm Coast, Fla., Deborah and Michael Maiorano of Garnerville, N.Y., Elise and Al Higgins of Mountaindale, N.Y., Melissa and Tom Sheppard of Cornwall, N.Y., and William H. Steinert of Mount Upton.

He is also survived by his mother, Ruth Ruppert of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, D. Bruce Ruppert of Ormond Beach, Fla.; close friends Bonnie and Jim Haggarty of Mount Upton; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y., with Pastor Mitch Mullenax of the Crossroads Community Church, Earlville, N.Y., officiating.

Friends are invited to call after noon Sunday and his family will be attendance from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Haves St., Norwich, N. Y. 13815 or to the Mount Upton Lions Club, Mount Upton, N. Y. 13809.

Ethel V. Cole

ROXBURY — Mrs. Robert (Ethel V.) Cole, 81, of Roxbury, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at her home with her family.

She was born June 8, 1919, in Baldwin, N.Y., the daughter of George and Frances (Morrison) Jackson.

Mrs. Cole married Robert Cole on July 2, 1947, in the Calvary Protestant Church in Baldwin.

The Coles have lived in Roxbury since 1958.

Mrs. Cole was co-owner with her husband of the Town Liquor Store in Roxbury.

She was a member of the Roxbury Methodist Church. She enjoyed watching and feeding wild birds. She also enjoyed her pets.

She was most devoted to her family and is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Cole, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Richard Constable of Bainbridge, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susan Cole of Roxbury and Gary and Kathy Friend of Pocono Lake, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Calvin (Dorothy) Garing of Florida; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Lynn Rivenburgh and Kathy Fairbairn.

Funeral services and burial in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury, will be private. There will be no visiting hours.

Those who wish may make expressions of sympathy to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements were by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

William H. Nichols

WALTON — William H. Nichols, 83, of Walton, died Thursday Oct. 19, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Mr. Nichols was born April 24, 1917, in Franklin, to Harry and Margaret Dumond Nichols.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was a member of the Frank Mead Eells Post 270 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Truman C. Toby Post 32 of the American Legion in Walton.

He married Florence More in Afton in November 1945.

Mr. Nichols worked as a carpenter for Glen Miller before his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; and daughters, Dawn Merwin and her husband James, of Walton, Delores Kohn and her husband, Stephen, of Tempe, Ariz., Deborah Gleason and her husband, Michael, of Fabius, N.Y., and Darlene Stanton and her husband, Ivan, of Walton. His brother, Hanford, and sister, Elizabeth Conklin, also survive. Mr. Nichols was the grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of one.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Lyon Bros.- Way Funeral Chapel, at the corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, where family will receive friends Sunday, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Donations made to the Alzheimer's Disease, 360 North Michigan Ave, Chicago, Ill., 60601, in his name would be appreciated.
