Lois Moubar

JUPITER, Fla. — Lois Moubar, 76, of Hobe Sound, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Jupiter Medical Center.

Born Oct. 7, 1924, in Hartwick Seminary, Lois graduated from Milford Central High School and the Amsterdam School of Nursing.

She worked in the Oneonta area for several years as a licensed practical nurse. She then moved to Long Island where she spent the last 16 years of her nursing career in the New York state psychiatric hospital system.

After retirement, Lois moved to Norwich to care for her elderly mother, Evelyn Geske, who preceded her in death.

Lois lived in Florida for the past four years.

She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Elias Mouber of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a son, Douglas Knapp and his wife, Nancy, of Lompoc,  Calif.; three daughters, Lynn Weidman of Tequesta, Fla., Alberta Gordan of Massapequa, N.Y., and Susan  Schmidt and her husband, Charles, of Hamilton, N.J.; and six grandchildren.

A private service was held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at  Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, Jupiter, Fla.

Burial will be in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery in the spring.

Those who wish may contribute to the Jupiter Kidney Center, 1000 South Old Dixie Highway, Jupiter, Fla. 33458.

Blanche A. Loucks

MIDDLEFIELD — Blanche A. Loucks, 83, of The Meadows, Middlefield, formerly of Nader Towers, Oneonta, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Sept. 20, 1917, in East  Jefferson, N.Y., the daughter of Perry and Jennie MacIntyre Payne.

Blanche married Homer H. Loucks on Oct. 16, 1935. Mr. Loucks died Jan. 10, 1990.

Blanche had worked for the State University College at Oneonta in the housekeeping department for 27 years, retiring about 1972.

A lifelong area resident, her early years were spent in East  Jefferson before her marriage.

She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was always known for lending a helping hand to others when needed.

Blanche loved the Lord and was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Oneonta.

She enjoyed crocheting, shopping and visiting others.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, H. Charles and Sandrea Loucks of Otego and Orben and Kay Loucks, also of Otego; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Robert Dahl of Unadilla and Diana and Morgan Roseboom of Oneonta; 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Mrs. C. Robert (Margaret Joan) Holbrook and Mrs. Betty Sampson; three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. Mr. Josh Mientke, of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses of Oneonta, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Thelma Titus

MOUNT UPTON — Thelma Titus, 90, of 660 Oregon Road, Mount Upton, died Oct. 18, 2000, at Chenango Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born on April 7, 1910, in Camden, N.J., the daughter of the late Willis and Emily (Dantley) Lowe Sr.

She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Titus.

She is survived by her sons, George Duncan of Phoenix, Ariz., Raymond Duncan of  West Virginia and Lee Duncan of Arkansas; her brother, Willis Lowe Jr. of Mount Upton; and a nephew, Harry Titus.

Thelma worked for A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and Broome County Community College in their dietary departments. She had also been a cook in several private homes.

At her request there will be no services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family,

Arrangements were by the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford.

Afa M. Waters

MILFORD — Mrs. Afa M. Waters, 89, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at The Meadows.

She was born on Aug. 27, 1911, in Hartwick, a daughter of Duane and Mabel (Naylor) Eldred.

Afa married Elmer Waters on July 24, 1928, in Cooperstown.

She lived in Mount Vision for many years and was a school bus driver for Laurens Central School for 15 years after which she worked in the school cafeteria for several years.

Afa lived with her daughter, Nancy Atwell, for nine years before moving to The Meadows two months ago.

Mrs. Waters was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown.

She enjoyed traveling and will be fondly remembered for her love of helping others.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gerald Atwell of Milford; a sister-in-law, Margaret Eldred of Mount Vision; two daughters-in-law, Inge Waters of Florida and Betty Waters of Oneonta; eight grandchildren, Charles Atwell, Richard Atwell and Eugene Atwell, all of Milford, Carolyn Finch of  Pennsylvania, Lisa Atwell of Port Crane, Karin Waters of California, Debra Sorell of Missouri and Scott Waters of Oneonta; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Afa was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Waters, in January 1978; two sons, Edward and Roger Waters; a grandson, Randall Atwell; a sister, Edna Bliss; and a brother, Ernest Eldred.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Richard Sliter of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown officiating.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad at P.O. Box 359, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

George W. Heiden

AFTON — George W. Heiden, 86, of 162 Caswell St., Afton, and formerly of Kilroy Road, Oxford, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, Oct. 21, 2000, at his residence.

He was born March 21, 1914, in Pittsford, the son of the late Herman William and Anne Martin Heiden.

George married Dorothy Besley on July 26, 1946, in Susquehanna, Pa. Dorothy predeceased him Aug. 2, 1994.

Mr. Heiden was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving his country during World War II.

George was owner, shop operator and welder for his company, Sidney-Bainbridge Welding, Bainbridge, for several years. He retired in 1979.

Several nieces and nephews survive him.

At Mr. Heiden's request, there will be no formal funeral services or calling hours.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Louise Crandall

SIDNEY — Louise Crandall, 92, a resident at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi, and formerly of 12 Pineview Terrace, Sidney, passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in Delhi.

She was born May 4, 1908, in Walton, the daughter of the late Everett and Ethel Payne.

Louise married Carlton J. Crandall on Sept. 11, 1927, in Unadilla. He predeceased her Feb. 7, 1962.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Kathy Crandall, Sidney; three grandsons, Mark Crandall of Belford, N.J., and Jeffrey Crandall and David Crandall, both of Bainbridge; and four great-grandchildren, Scott, Thomas, Justin and Jesse Crandall.

Her two sisters, Marjorie Church and Flo Mackey; and her brother, Buster Payne, predeceased her.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, from the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Shank, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating.

At the family's request, there will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the memorial fund at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, N.Y.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Delphine S. Logan

SIDNEY — Delphine S. Logan, 92, of 17 West Main St., Sidney, went to be with her Lord on Monday afternoon, Oct. 23, 2000, in A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born April 12, 1908, in North Harpersfield, the daughter of the late John W. and Lena Mae McLean Silvernail.

Delphine was married to Murray Logan on Sept. 3, 1927, in Davenport. He predeceased her on Dec. 25, 1978.

Mr. and Mrs. Logan founded the Logan and Sons Grocery Store in Sidney in 1935.

In the early '50s Mrs. Logan began the famous deli in the store. She was especially remembered for her fresh baked pies and goodies for the store.

The youngsters of the Tri-Towns will always recall the candy apples given by the hundred for trick-or-treat at the Halloween season. In 1971, she retired, turning ownership of the store over to her sons.

She was a 65-year member of the First Baptist Church, Sidney. She was instrumental in the founding of the cradle roll of the church. She was also a member of the Philathea Class of the church and the Monday Club of Sidney.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Donald Shields, Castleton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Betty Logan of Afton and Murray and Patsy Logan of Bainbridge; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Evelyn Thomas; and two brothers, Jay and Harry Silvernail, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, from the First Baptist Church, Sidney, with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Saturday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with her family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the First Baptist Church, Sidney, or to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Ethel B. Lockhart

VESTAL — Ethel B. Lockhart, 95, of Vestal, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the Willow Point Nursing Home in Vestal.

She was born Dec. 31, 1904, in Wells Bridge, the daughter of Julius C. and Mabel (Babcock) Barber.

Ethel was a telephone operator for the New York Telephone Co. in Binghamton, for 42 years, before retiring in 1969. She had lived in Oneonta until 1958, when she moved to Binghamton.

Ethel was a lifelong member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Downsville American Legion. She enjoyed fly fishing and made her own flies when she was younger.

She is survived by a first cousin, Dorothy Watson of Downsville; and a second cousin, Arthur Watson of Downsville. She is also survived by several other cousins.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Adrian Mac Farland of the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Edith M. Preston

TREADWELL — Edith M. Preston, 92, of Treadwell, died Monday Oct. 23, 2000, at her residence.

She was born May 22, 1908, in Bloomville, the daughter of William C. and Emma E. (Howard) Mitchell.

She married H. Franklin Preston on June 14, 1936, in Treadwell. He died on June 17, 1985.

Edith attended Treadwell Grammar School and graduated from the Delaware Literary Institute in Franklin. After graduating from the New York State Normal School in Oneonta, she taught music part time at the Kellogg Central School and later taught many piano students at her home.

The joys in Edith's life centered on music, writing and decorative arts. She enjoyed her friends, baseball and the Delaware County bus for seniors. Her cat was her constant companion.

She joined the United Methodist Church in 1922 and recently attended the October meeting of the United Methodist Women.

After joining the Community Improvement Club of Treadwell in the 1930s, Edith served as Delaware County chairman of the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs. The club placed her name on the State Federation Honor Roll and also made her a lifetime honorary member of the club.

Edith was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had been worthy matron.

She was a correspondent for three Delaware County newspapers. Her poems were published in both books and magazines.

Her artistic ability brought her highest awards in flower shows and holiday decorating contests.

A highlight in her later life was the invitation to visit Roosevelt St. Luke's Hospital as an honored guest. She had spent almost three years of her childhood as a patient recovering from a back injury at St. Luke's, as it was then known. Greeted by doctors and staff, she enjoyed visiting the children.

Edith is survived by a dear friend, Rosemary Olson, and her family of Wrenshall, Minn.; her cousins, Flavius Mauer, his wife, Dorothy, and their son, Peter, of Bloomville, and Gary Manning of Delhi; and a niece, Barbara Wickenhofer, of Laurens.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Treadwell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating. An Eastern Star memorial service will also be incorporated at that time. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends may call at the church one hour before service time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Treadwell United Methodist Church or the Treadwell Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Elizabeth Franks

MARGARETVILLE — Elizabeth Franks, 95, of Margaretville, died Oct. 24, 2000, at her home.

She was born Sept. 6, 1905, in Margaretville, the daughter of Charles Gavette and Viola Vermilyea.

She married Harry Franks on Dec. 9, 1920, in Margaretville. He died Feb. 16, 1966.

She assisted her husband working on dairy farms in the area.

She attended the Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Ackerley and Emma Johnson, both of Margaretville; and 10 grandchildren. She also is survived by great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, William and Robert Franks.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at Andes Cemetery, Andes, with the Rev. George Carpenter officiating. Burial will be held at the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
