John Brainard
WALTON — John Brainard, 84, of Walton passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at home.
John was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Walton, the son of Fred and Maude Brainard.
He attended Walton schools, graduating in 1936. After graduating from high school, John worked at Sheffield Farms in Walton for nine years.
He married Helen Schmidt of Dickson City, Pa., on Jan. 10, 1942, and lived and worked on the home dairy farm for a number of years.
While farming, he was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Eastern Milk Producers and was a substitute mail carrier for 18 years.
John joined the Walton Grange in 1930 and held the office of master several times and was treasurer for 15 years. He became a "Golden Sheaf" member several years ago.
After selling the family farm, John became very active in the community. He sold real estate, served as an assessor for the town board as well as a councilman and also served on the review board for a number of years.
John was the superintendent of the Walton Cemetery for 19 years, retiring in July of 1989, and has been a trustee since that time.
He was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church and had served as trustee, deacon and elder. John was also "raised" as a member of the Walton Masonic Lodge #559 in 1972.
John was a friendly man and well-known around the area and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Brainard of Walton; sons, Roger and his wife, Lynn, of Deposit and Harold of Windsor; daughters, Barbara Bennett and her husband, George, of Tempe, Ariz., and Audrey McKee and her husband, Steve, of Denver, Colo.; and a brother, Richard, of Syracuse. He also is survived by five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Schmidt, of Dickson City, Pa.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Walton United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will follow immediately in Walton Cemetery.
At Mr. Brainard's request, there will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial contributions be made in his name to the Walton United Presbyterian Church.

Ann E. Greene
FLEISCHMANNS — Ann E. Greene, a many-year resident of Fleischmanns, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.
She was born in New Kingston on April 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Theron J. and Minnie V. Davis Starley.
Ann attended a one-room rural school in New Kingston and later graduated from Margaretville High School in 1932 and went on to graduate from Oneonta Normal School in 1936. She then returned to the New Kingston Rural School where she taught until 1939. From 1939 through 1944, she taught in the Margaretville Central School system. From 1944 through 1946, Ann taught in the Gloversville City School system.
In 1946, she married William Greene, and they owned and operated Greene's Flower Shop in Fleischmanns until 1969.
Ann returned to Margaretville Central School system from 1970 until her retirement in 1980.
She was a member of the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church, the Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary, The New York State Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Red Cross, the ARC and the Perch Lake Association, where she owned and enjoyed a camp for many years.
In addition to her husband, William, who died in 1974, she was predeceased by a daughter, K. Melanie Greene.
Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne Greene of New York City; two granddaughters, Ann Greene Kelly and Jane Linsey Kelly; and a son-in-law, John L. Kelly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church, Main Street, Fleischmanns, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating. Interment will be in the New Kingston Cemetery.
Friends may call at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The family requests donations be made to the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church.
Rachel P. Seward
COLLIERSVILLE — Mrs. Rachel P. Seward, 91, of Colliersville died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born June 27, 1909, in Columbus Center.
On May 27, 1933, she married Clifford P. Seward in Oneonta. Clifford predeceased her on Nov. 9, 1982.
Rachel graduated from the Oneonta Normal School in 1930. She taught for three years at New Hyde Park, Long Island.
Rachel had lived in Colliersville for 50 years before moving to the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.
She was a 72-year member of the First United Presbyterian Church. She taught women's Bible study for many years.
Rachel was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed, especially for her sense of humor.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Issa (Marita) Boullata of Montreal, Canada, Mrs. John (Patricia) Leon of Brooklyn and Miss Rebecca Seward of Oneida; six grandchildren, Joseph Boullata, Barbara Boullata, David Boullata, Peter Clifford Boullata, Noah Harris and Julianna Harris; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Boullata, Angela Boullata, Nicolas Boullata and Vincent Boullata; and several nieces and nephews.
Rachel was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will be present at the funeral home on Sunday evening, Oct. 29, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

Edith Foote
TAMPA, Fla. — Edith May Layman Joslyn Foote passed away Sept. 15, 2000.
She was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Oneonta, N.Y.
Edith had two children, Linda Louise and William Arthur Joslyn.
She worked as a homemaker for the Otsego County (N.Y.) Child Welfare for 18 years, helping the elderly, before retiring to Florida.
She lived in Ridge Manor and Forest Lake Estates, Zephyrhills.
Edith loved golf, dancing and cards.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lynn Moseman Joslyn, J. Austin Foote, and her daughter, Linda Louise Songdale.
Edith is survived by her son, William A. Joslyn, and his wife, Gail; her son-in-law, Peter Songdale; her cousin, Doug Layman and his wife, Dolly; stepchildren Judy Harrigan, Jack Foote and Martha Blumenstock; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Anne Kirk Cooke
COOPERSTOWN — Anne Kirk Cooke, lately of Cooperstown, died on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Oneonta Nursing Home. She was 99 years old.
Anne Kirk Cooke was born on Aug. 29, 1901, in Baltimore, Md., the third daughter of Edith Huntemuller Kirk and Henry Child Kirk, owner and manager of the Kirk Silversmith Co.
As a girl, she attended Oldfields and Bryn Mawr schools and the Peabody Conservatory, graduating with a teacher's certificate in piano. Her sister Mary had been a school chum of Wallis Warfield Simpson, the American divorcee whose last husband, the Duke of Windsor, had abdicated the British throne to marry her. Mary herself married Ernest Simpson after Wallis divorced him.
Anne and her daughter later wrote a book, "The Other Mrs. Simpson-Postscript to the Love Story of the Century" about Mary's part in those events.
In 1928, Anne married Meyric Reynold Rogers, who was at that time assistant curator of the Baltimore City Art Museum. Shortly afterward, they moved to St. Louis, Mo., where Mr. Rogers served for 10 years as the director of the St. Louis City Art Museum.
In 1940, the family moved to Chicago, where Mr. Rogers had been offered a position as curator of decorative arts for the Art Institute of Chicago. They were divorced in 1948.
Anne then married Bill Bailey and moved to San Diego. When Mr. Bailey died a few months later, Anne moved back to Chicago and married Lewis H.D. Fraser, a physical chemist for RCA. He died in 1952. Anne then moved to Washington, D.C., where she met Charles Cooke, a writer for the Civil Service and Veterans Administration and a part-time book reviewer and feature article writer for the Washington Star. They were married in 1958. When Charles Cooke retired in 1969-70, the couple bought a house in Cooperstown, Mr. Cooke's childhood home. They lived at 21 Lake St. until 1977, when Mr. Cooke died and Mrs. Cooke was joined by her daughter, Elizabeth. Together they operated the Once More Bookstore in Hoffman Lane until about 1981.
Mrs. Cooke enjoyed playing the piano, had several piano pupils and gave three or four recitals while living in Cooperstown.
She was also a member of Christ Church and the Women's Republican Club.
Mrs. Cooke is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Rogers; her son, Meyric Kirk Rogers; grandchildren, Margot Rogers Ocanas, Libby Gardner Rogers and Colin Kirk Rogers; and a nephew, Kirk Hollingsworth.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, on Nov. 15, 2000, at 10:30 a.m.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made to the Christ Church Capital Projects Fund.

Beverly Paige Critz
ONEONTA — Beverly Paige Critz, 53, died of multiple sclerosis on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Her roommate of many years and nursing staff were at her side.
Beverly was born in West Point, Miss., on March 30, 1947, to the Rev. Wiley and Eva Jarvis Critz. She had two siblings, a brother, Wiley and a sister, Carol.
Bev spent the majority of her childhood in Princeton, N.J., and loved to talk about her days as a cheerleader and the school mascot. She attended Michigan State University and majored in philosophy.
Bev eventually moved to Manhattan to be near her parents, and worked in insurance and risk management for CBS. She was also a volunteer EMT for the city of New York.
Bev was a lifelong lover of animals, especially dogs and horses. She was a member of the Claremont Riding Academy and rode in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Bev moved to Oneonta approximately six years ago and worked as a medical transcriptionist at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She moved to the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in August of 1996, and became very active in facility life. She as an officer on the Residents Council, and a charter member of the MS Support Group. She participated in the MS Walk every year. Bev was also a member of the Eucharistic Ministry team of the Morris United Methodist Church.
Bev delighted in other people, and was a good and caring friend to her fellow nursing home residents.
Beverly is survived by many friends who were deeply touched by her life, especially: Janet Kelly, her roommate, Margaret Schmitt, Bobbe Adams, Bruce Dow, Sophie Frohnhoefer, Evelyn Norton, and a host of volunteers and staff.
Friends are invited to graveside services at Oneonta Plains Cemetery on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at 10 a.m., with her good friend Pastor Kip Stratton officiating. Friends are also invited to a memorial service on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 2:45 p.m. at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
In lieu of flowers, Bev has asked that her friends consider rescuing an unwanted animal or making a donation to their local animal shelter.

Anna P. Hickling
NORWICH — Anna P. Hickling, 73, of Norwich and formerly of Edmeston died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
She was born April 5, 1927, the daughter of Millard and Ardath (Calhoun) Hendrickson.
On Aug. 17, 1949, she married Dorr Hickling Jr. He predeceased her on Nov. 29, 1980.
With her husband, she ran the family dairy farm and will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Anna is survived by her companion, Lee Cummings of Norwich; her children, Linda Ingber of West Winfield, Tim Hickling of DeLancey and Diane May of Maine; five grandchildren; her mother, Ardath Hendrickson of Chase Memorial Nursing Home; her brothers and sisters, Harriet Simons, Danny Hendrickson, Judy Stage, Sarah Jennison and Willard Hendrickson.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Leland, Paul and Tom Hendrickson; and sister, Evelyn Johannesen.
Funeral services for Anna will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating. Interment will follow at the Edmeston Union Cemetery. Calling hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. today, Oct. 30, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Diabetes Association would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Burton R. Lindsley
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Burton R. Lindsley, of White Sulphur Springs, a retired New York state conservation officer and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, in M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. He was 82.
The son of the late Ralph and Elizabeth Hogencamp Lindsley, he was born. Feb. 28, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs.
"He was a devoted, dedicated, and loving husband, who was a big man with a big heart," his family said in a statement. "He loved his community and the community loved him."
Mr. Lindsley served our country during World War II in the United States Army; he was a member of the Russel Sprague American Legion Post #109, Liberty; member of the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church; member of the White Sulphur Springs Fire Department and for many years served as its secretary; member of the Liberty Elk's Lodge #1545, Liberty; member of the New York State Conservation Officers Association, Albany; a founding member and member of the Board of Directors of the Laurel Hill Cemetery Association, White Sulphur Springs; and a member of the NRA.
Survivors include his loving wife, Betty Hill Lindsley, at home; a daughter, Roberta Allotta and her husband, John, of Riverside, Calif.; a son, Deming Lindsley and his wife, Nancy, of Stamford; a sister, Arlene Bradley of White Sulphur Springs; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Grayton Lindsley.
Visitation will be today, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty. Firematic services will be at 7:30 this evening in the funeral home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. in the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, Route 52, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. DuBois Smith and the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church.

Eugene Molinari Sr.
GOODYEAR LAKE — Eugene J. Molinari Sr., 83, of Goodyear Lake, passed away peacefully, at his residence, with his family at his side, on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Anthony A. and Josephine (DiAmbrosini) Molinari.
He married Frances Kelley on Aug. 8, 1948, in Oneonta.
Gene was a veteran of World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters. He was discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945.
In 1981, Gene retired from NYSEG, where he was employed for 28 years. Before that he worked in the Palace Cigar Store.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church, where he served as an usher.
He was a member of the Elbert Patten VFW Post of Oneonta. At one time, he was active in the Boy Scouts, and was a member and committeeman for Troop 259, as well as a member of scouting's honorary society, the Order of the Arrow.
Gene was an avid fisherman and enjoyed photography.
He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Molinari of Goodyear Lake; his children and their spouses, Eugene and Bonnie Molinari Jr. of Oneonta, Thomas and Bonnie Molinari of Blue Point, Long Island, Maria and Robert Frank of Oneonta and Patricia and Ronald Brooke Sr. of East Meredith; and his grandchildren, Anthony Molinari, Jason Burr, Jennifer Molinari, Kayla Molinari, Ronald Brooke Jr. and Nicole Frank. He is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ann Tessitore and her husband, Joseph, of Oneonta and Gloda Tessitore of Binghamton; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta after 2 p.m. Wednesday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.
