William H. Hughes

ONEONTA — William H. Hughes, 77, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

He was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Paisley, Scotland, the son of William H. and Janet (Rennie) Hughes.

He married Margaret "Peggy" Alger on Dec. 3, 1949, in Oneonta.

Bill has lived in Oneonta for most of his life. He graduated from Oneonta High School. He was active in sports and was considered an exceptional athlete. After graduating from high school, Bill attended Trinity Prep in New York City on a basketball scholarship.

He entered the United States Army in 1942 and served with the 101st Airborne parachute infantry. He was discharged in 1946, as sergeant, and he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. After returning from the service, he attended Hartwick College.

Bill retired from ECD Bendix, where he worked for a short period of time. Before that, he served as the relocation director for the HUD-sponsored city of Oneonta Urban Renewal program. He also was a car salesman for the Oneonta Sales Co. and Phillip's Buick.

An avid sports fan, Bill was a supporter of the Oneonta High School athletic program. He also was a great supporter of the Oneonta Yankees and, along with the late Leroy "Sonny" House, was a P.A. announcer.

He is survived by his wife, Peg Hughes of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Rennie and Larry Brown of Oneonta, Peggy Hughes of Walnut Creek,  Calif., William Hughes Jr. of Searsmont, Maine, Joseph and Jane Hughes of Oneonta and Helen "Chickie" and Jack Mateosky of West River, Md.; and his grandchildren, Janet and Heather Brown, Joey, Tyler and Beth Ann Hughes and William Mateosky. He is also survived by his sisters and their spouses, Betty and Emerson  Jones of Hamilton, Janet Stanton of Cooperstown and Jean and Steve Salata of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of William H. Hughes will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at 3:30 p.m. in First United Presbyterian Church (Red Door), with the Rev. Adrian Mac Farland officiating. Burial will be private in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

A reception following the service will be held in the social room of the church.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Harold W. Sallie

WINDHAM — Harold W. Sallie, 91, of Windham and formerly of Otego, died on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the home of his caregiver, Grace McNeill, in Milford Center.

He was born on March 12, 1909, in St. Albans, Long Island, the son of Thomas F. and Norah V. (Carey) Sallie.

He married Marie C. Reitwiesner on Nov. 11, 1943. She died on Nov. 25, 1981.

Harold worked for 20 years for Brooks Brothers Clothier in New York City.

In 1948, he moved to Otego, where he ran Harold's Esso Service, until his retirement in 1988, at which time he moved to his summer home in Windham.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, a life member of Oneonta BPOE 1312, the Otego Rotary Club and, for a brief time, was a member of a local barbershop quartet.

For many years, Harold answered the fire phone for the Otego Fire Department.

He was an avid golfer and was the guest of honor at this year's Catskill Area Hospice Golf Tournament, held to raise awareness to the quality of life one can continue to have while facing a terminal illness, such as cancer.

Mr. Sallie was recently interviewed by The Daily Star in connection with the PBS commentary on death and dying.

He is survived by his daughter, Eileen Essi of Syracuse; three grandchildren, Michael Essi, Norah Essi and Marie Essi, all of Syracuse; a great-granddaughter, Octavia Essi of Syracuse; his faithful companion and friend, Grace McNeill of Milford Center; a brother, Edward F. Sallie of Maplecrest; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

Friends may call on Thursday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Oneonta BPOE 1312 will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Eugene Molinari Sr.

GOODYEAR LAKE — Eugene J. Molinari Sr., 83, of Goodyear Lake, passed away peacefully, at his residence, with his family at his side, on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000.

He was born on Nov. 9, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Anthony A. and Josephine (DeAmbrosini) Molinari.

He married Frances Kelley on Aug. 8, 1948, in Oneonta.

Gene was a veteran of World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters. He was discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945.

In 1981, Gene retired from NYSEG, where he was employed for 28 years. Before that he worked in the Palace Cigar Store.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, where he served as an usher.

He was a member of the Elbert Patten VFW Post of Oneonta. At one time, he was active in the Boy Scouts and was a member and committeeman for Troop 259, as well as a member of scouting's honorary society, the Order of the Arrow.

Gene was an avid fisherman and enjoyed photography.

He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Molinari of Goodyear Lake; his children and their spouses, Eugene and Bonnie Molinari Jr. of Oneonta, Thomas and Bonnie Molinari of Blue Point, Long Island, Maria and Robert Frank of Oneonta and Patricia and Ronald Brooke Sr. of East Meredith; and his grandchildren, Anthony Molinari, Jason Burr, Jennifer Molinari, Kayla Molinari, Ronald Brooke Jr. and Nicole Frank.

He is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ann Tessitore and her husband, Joseph, of Oneonta, and Gloria Tessitore of Binghamton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta after 2 p.m. Wednesday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Norma B. Catlin

WILMINGTON, Del. — Mrs. Norma B. Catlin, 88, of 21 Wood Road, Wilmington, Del., and formerly of Cooperstown, N.Y., died Tuesday morning, Oct. 31, 2000, in Wilmington, Del.

She was born on Jan. 10, 1912, in Rome, N.Y., a daughter of Elmer and Belle Boyson.

Mrs. Catlin was raised in Rome and was a graduate of Rome High School.

On Nov. 28, 1928, she married Russell Catlin in Rome. Shortly after they were married, the Catlins moved to Cooperstown, where they resided until 1950. They then moved to West Hartford, Conn., where Mrs. Catlin was employed as a salesperson for Black & Decker. The Catlins returned to Cooperstown in 1973, first residing on Chestnut Street and later in Bowerstown.

She was employed as a salesperson for Ellsworth & Sill on Main Street until July of 1995.

Mrs. Catlin was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, where her husband served as organist from 1973 until 1982.

She is survived by one daughter, Johanne Strahan of Wilmington, Del.; one son, Jens J. Catlin, and his wife, Helen, of LaVerne,  Calif.; two sisters, Jane Curtis of Cooperstown and Beatrice Hagen of Herkimer; four brothers, Herbert Boyson and his wife, Dorothy, of Austin,  Texas, Bert Boyson of Old Forge, Elmer Boyson and his wife, Lois, of San Antonio,  Texas, and Alfred Boyson of Wallingford, Conn.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Russell, who died Oct. 9, 1982; and a brother, Norris Boyson.

At the request of the family, services and burial in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Utica, will be private.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Tree Committee, 22 Main St., P.O. Box 346, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326-0374 or to the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326. Contribution envelopes may be obtained at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown.

Dorothy R. Ackerly

DELHI — Dorothy R. Ackerly, 93, of Delhi, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born March 10, 1907, in Schenevus, the daughter of Willard C. and Marion (Haynes) Riddell.

She married Earl Ackerly in May 1946 in Delhi. He predeceased her in 1970.

Mrs. Ackerly worked in the offices of Meridale Farms and for Mr. John Lennox in the 4-H Office.

She enjoyed memberships in the Meredith Baptist Church, Delhi Baptist Church, Treadwell Methodist Church and Butternut Valley Grange #1533 in Gilbertsville.

She was a housewife who dearly loved her family and friends, as well as reading, country music and crafts, including knitting and crocheting.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Condon, Treadwell; a brother, Leonard Riddell, Oneonta; two grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Renwick Burns Jr.; five brothers; three sisters; and one grandson.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at the Treadwell Methodist Church with the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating. Calling hours will be at 1 p.m. at the church preceding the service. Burial will be at a later date at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Treadwell Methodist Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Donald J. Drumm

DELHI — Donald J. "Drummy" Drumm, 59, of Delhi, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born Nov. 14, 1940, in Hancock, the son of Robert Elton and Ruth (Moran) Drumm.

He is survived by a son, Robert Drumm of North Carolina; and daughter, Paula Drumm of Bovina Center; two brothers, Edward Drumm of Schenectady and Thomas Drumm of Massachusetts; and a sister, Diane VerNooy of DeLancey.

Drummy was a lifelong area resident who loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing and was a member of the NRA.

He worked for Burton Clark Inc., Delhi, as a heavy equipment operator.

Services to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the American Legion, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Donations in his memory may be made to O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Dolores M. Bird

WEST LAURENS — Dolores M. Bird, 82, of West Laurens, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Lawrence Collins and Mabel (Johnson) Collins.

Dolores was married to Vance Bird on May 29, 1939, in Detroit. Dolores and Vance moved to New York in 1949, where they settled in West Laurens on a dairy farm.

Dolores worked as an assistant bookkeeper of Citizens National Bank (Key Bank), bookkeeper at First National Bank, Morris, and retired from Key Bank as head teller of the West End Office, Oneonta.

Dolores was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Laurens. She was past officer of the Order of Eastern Star, #518 Laurens, and a member of the Homemakers Club of West Laurens.

Dolores also enjoyed bowling with her husband on the Senior Citizen's Bowling League.

Dolores thrived on having her family around, and her family will miss her dearly.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Vance; their children, Len Bird and his wife, Johanna, from Houston,  Texas, Ronald Bird and his wife, Jamie, from Los Angeles,  Calif., and Barbara Smith and her husband, Al, from Morris.

Dolores also is survived by six grandchildren, Cindy Boyd from College Station,  Texas, Michael Bird from Baton Rouge, La., Deborah and John Morris from Gilbertsville, Brian and Janet Decker from Morris and Courtney and Aaron Bird from Los Angeles,  Calif.

Dolores took delight in her eight great-grandchildren, Ashley, Sarah and Trevor Hoke, Brittany, Brandee, Garrett and Levi Decker and Ali Boyd.

Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Ern Bird and his wife, Annabel, of Delhi; a sister-in-law, Elsie (Billie) Currie of South Kortright; and brother-in-law, Larry Rigas and his wife, Sally, of Walton.

A public memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Laurens. Friends will have the opportunity to greet family members and share memories of Dolores immediately after the memorial service where a coffee fellowship will be provided by the ladies of the church.

A private committal service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Bennett Cemetery, West Laurens.

Those who wish are asked to donate to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Laurens, or to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, in Dolores' memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Robert D. Bagg Sr.

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Robert Douglas Bagg Sr., 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, in Florida.

Robert was born in Oneonta, N.Y., Oct. 23, 1922, to Halsey Powell Bagg and Helen (Hunt) Bagg.

Robert married Metta Mitchell on Nov. 27, 1947. She survives.

Robert served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II. After the war, he returned to Oneonta, where he founded Bagg's Wayside Furniture Store of which he was president until his retirement in 1987.

During his active years as a business man in Oneonta, he was a member and director of Rotary Club, director of the YMCA and past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

He was very involved with the building and financing of the Oneonta High School on Upper East Street.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Oneonta Country Club, Elks Club, VFW and American Legion, among other groups.

He was a very avid golfer since his teen years as a caddie. In his retirement years, he served as the assistant to the pro and later a member of the Burnt Store Marina Country Club in Punta Gorda, Fla., until poor health halted his golf career.

Besides Metta, he is also survived by a daughter, Emilie and her husband, Michael, Williams of Wilmington, N.Y.; a son, Robert Jr. of Port Reading, N.J., another son, Halsey Mitchell Bagg and his wife, Jo-Ann, of Vestal, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Michael Falin, Tupper Lake, N.Y., Billie Jo Christman, Lexington, N.C., Metta Christman and Amanda Christman of New York City, Kimberly Bagg of Aiea, Hawaii, Robert Alden Bagg, Megan Bagg of Lake Placid, N.Y., Andrew and his wife, Christine, Bagg of Syracuse, N.Y., Walter Bagg of Ithaca, Ryan and Lindsey Bagg of Vestal, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Slocum; a sister-in-law, Emily Mitchell DePalma; a brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Mitchell and his wife, Joan, of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and aunts, uncle, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Those who wish may make contributions in his memory to the Oneonta First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the National Emphysema Foundation, 15 Stevens St., Norwalk, Conn. 06856.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, N.Y.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
