Amelia DalCanton

FRANKLIN — Amelia Erminia DalCanton, 95, of Franklin, and a former resident of the Hampshire House in Oneonta, died on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi, after a long illness.

She was born in Quero, Italy, the daughter of Benedetto and Maria (Pochetto) Mazzocco.

She married her husband of more than 70 years, Angelo DalCanton and came to America to live in the Cliffside Park, N.J., area.

She is survived by her husband, Angelo, of Delhi; her son and daughters-in-law, Lino and Louise DalCanton of Franklin and Josephine DalCanton of Bogota, N.J.; three grandchildren, John and Carlene DalCanton of  Texas, James and Kathy DalCanton of Fairlawn, N.J., and Jean DalCanton of Marlboro, N.J.; several great grandchildren including, Jessica, John, James, Cortney, Brianna, Eric and Chelsie DalCanton and Joey Hamm.

She was predeceased by her grandson Steven DalCanton in 1992; and her son, John DalCanton, in 1993.

The family received friends at Fairview Mausoleum on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, from noon to 1 p.m., and funeral services, with Father Frank of Our Lady or Grace Catholic Church of Fairview, N.J., followed at the mausoleum.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Heather Rosario-Sievert

NEW YORK CITY — Heather Rosario-Sievert, a resident of both New York City and Franklin, died peacefully at home on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, following a courageous battle against lung cancer.

She was the loving wife of William Sievert; devoted mother of Liana Rosario and her husband, David Aronson, and Claudia Rosario Hammond; cherished grandmother of Holley London Aronson; and sister of Audrey Novoa.

Having earned her doctorate, she was a professor of English at Hostos Community College of CUNY, a translator and poet.

Services were held at The Riverside Funeral Chapel, New York City.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Save the Children Foundation.

Gertrude B. Fassett

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Ms. Gertrude B. Fassett, 75, formerly of East Springfield and Mohawk passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa, after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 11, 1925, in Germany, the daughter of Otto and Marie Buchmeier.

She worked most of her life on the family farm, Lime Springs, in East Springfield, and later resided in Mohawk. She was a nursing assistant and cook at Homestead Nursing Home. Before retiring, she was a home health aide for Herkimer County Catholic Services.

Gertrude enjoyed working with the youth as a 4-H leader. She was the secretary, for many years, for the Otsego, Herkimer, Montgomery (OHM) Club. She was a member of Springfield Grange, East Springfield, and the Ladies Aide Society of First Presbyterian Church, East Springfield.

Her hobbies included gardening, traveling, photography, cake decorating and volunteer work.

She is survived by four sons, Leon Fassett of Beloit, Wis., Dean Fassett of Ballston Spa, Ivan Fassett of Springfield Center and Gary Fassett of Visalia,  Calif.; a daughter, Joan Buchinski of Jermyn, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Hall of Saratoga Springs and Ann Weeks of Missoula, Mont.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will be in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Contributions in Gertrude's memory may be made to the Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 12871.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Shaun C. Hayes

ONEONTA — Shaun C. Hayes, 31, of Oneonta passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 24, 1969, in Rockville Center, the son of Stephen J. and Catherine S. (Elbert) Hayes.

He married Amy L. Hawkins on Nov. 11, 1989, in Stillwater.

Shaun was most recently employed as a network technician for Silver Dollar Optical in Oneonta.

He was a member of the Oneonta Assembly of God Church.

Shaun had a great passion for computers, and also enjoyed fishing.

He loved his wife with all his heart and soul, and cherished the special times with his children.

Shaun currently was in the process of pursuing a ministerial license.

He is survived by his wife, Amy L. Hayes, of Oneonta; his children, Theresa K. Hayes and Shaun C. Hayes Jr. of Oneonta; his father, Stephen J. Hayes, of Saratoga; two sisters, his twin sister, Lauren Ramundo, and her husband, Robert, of Saratoga and Jennifer Wasielewski and her husband, Robert, of Stillwater; his father and mother-in-law, Russ and Jane Hawkins of Port Crane; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. John D. Grenier, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from noon until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Assembly of God Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Paul W. Hamilton

SIDNEY CENTER — Paul W. Hamilton, 76, of Sidney Center, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in Delhi.

He was born to the late George and Rose Walser Hamilton on Sept. 8, 1924, in Summerfield, Ill.

Paul married Kathleen Kilpatrick Kozee on July 5, 1968. Kay predeceased him on Jan. 13, 1993.

He served his country in the United States Navy from 1941-1945.

Paul was a mechanic for Yale In Town Forklifts, in Hicksville, Long Island, when he retired in 1972. He then moved to Sidney Center and owned and operated the Sidney Center Hotel until 1977.

Paul was a life member of the Sidney Center Fire Department and a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney.

Paul is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sandra Hamilton, Fresno,  Calif., and Paul and Sandra Hamilton, Sidney Center; two stepsons, James and Ernie Kozee, Summerfield, Ill.; five sisters, Agnes Schure, Grettenburg, Iowa, Betty Broeker, Troy, Mo., Helen Schmitt, Elk Mt., Wyo., Monica Snider, Glenn Corbin, Ill., and Joan Haurey, Summerfield, Ill.; two grandchildren, Tracey and Jamie Hamilton, Fresno,  Calif.; brother-in-law, Mickie Kilpatrick and his wife, Martha; nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and nephews.

A brother, John Hamilton, also predeceases him.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James Vargo, pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney, officiating. Friends may call Tuesday, Nov. 7. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Archie B. More

DELHI — Archie B. More died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center.

He was 96 years old. Mr. More was born in Millbrook on March 31, 1904, to James and Anna VanSteenburgh More. He was one of seven children.

Archie worked at numerous area dairy farms as well as being caretaker of the Hamden Cemetery until his retirement in 1989.

He was a lifelong resident of the Hamden area and resided with the Wager family in DeLancey for the past several years.

Archie is best remembered as the man riding his red bicycle around the area.

Survivors include his sister, Jessie Felker of Pine Island; and nieces and nephews. Also, his devoted friends, the Wager family, Peter and Kay Wager, Coral and Chuck Shaddock, Peggy Marrero, and Rob and Hope Wager, who considered him a family member.

He was predeceased by four of his brothers, John, Alec, Denny and Ben; and one sister, Julia.

Friends may call at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, from 7 to 9 tonight. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the same location.

Burial will be at the Hamden Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in the name of Archie B. More may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Inc., Oneonta, or the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Delhi.

Richard Peterson

PITTSFIELD — Richard Melvin Peterson, 62, died of cancer on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at his home in the town of Pittsfield.

He was born in the Bronx on June 6, 1938, the son of Andrew and Elvi (West) Peterson.

He was married to Joan Ann Snethen on Oct. 25, 1980, in Morris.

He graduated from Worcester Central School in the Class of 1956, boarded with Chris Roe and his wife and drove a milk can route for them for several years. He then got a job delivering eggs to the Albany area with Bertyl-Holmes, which he did for a few years. Dick then purchased his own truck, established his own milk route and became well-known for naming each of his vehicles, such as "The Green Hornet" and "The Red Ram Special," and others. After selling his milk route, he drove for Burt Lobdell, delivering feed. He had driven for Lutz Feed for the past 20 years.

Dick and Art Gill raced their stockcar, the #170, in the late '50s and early '60s at Midstate Raceway and Fonda Speedway. This car was recently restored by Walt Scherlman and raced again with the Midstate Antique Stockcar Club. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of New Berlin; his sons, Jene Peterson of Albany, Daniel Peterson of Sidney; his daughter, Wendy Fling and her husband, Dale, of Schenevus; his stepchildren, including Robert Fisher of New Berlin, William C. Fisher and his wife, Stephanie, of New Berlin, Rebecca Hennings and her husband, John, of Taylorville, Ill. and Marjorie Rearick of New Lisbon; and 11 grandchildren. A brother, Carl Peterson and his wife, Evelyn, of Cayuga; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Kinney of Morris and Georgianna (Squeak) and her husband, Dr. Richard Smith, of New Berlin; and several nieces and nephews, also survive him.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Morris, with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

It was Dick's request that he be cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris, and that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Pittsfield Fire Department in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Lucie N. Squires

DELHI — Lucie N. Squires, 92, of Delhi and formerly of Margaretville died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

She was born May 11, 1908, in Denver, the daughter of Delvergn and Nettie (Hinkley) Kelly.

She married Irving Squires on June 26, 1926, in Roxbury. He died Dec. 23, 1942.

Lucie operated a Tourist Home in Margaretville and also worked at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital for 16 years in the Dietary Department. She was a foster care mother for several years.

She was a member of Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

She enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by a daughter, Caslyn W. Squires of Delhi; daughter-in-law, Barbara Fairbairn of Margaretville; three special grandsons, Dennis Squires of Albany, Bruce Squires of Kingston and Sgt. Daron Squires of Fayetteville, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Barry Squires, who died in 1989.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Burial will be at the Old Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Family and friends will be received at the Advent Christian Church on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Lucie N. Squires to the Memorial Fund of Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Paul W. Barriger

DELHI — Paul W. Barriger, 75, a 40-year Delhi resident, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at his home.

The son of Hiram O. and Jessie (Walley) Barriger, he was born Aug. 22, 1925, in the town of Franklin and married Lavinia (Tait) Buckbee on Nov. 5, 1979, in Freemont.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he served in the European Theater and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Paul was employed for 24 years as a heavy equipment operator for the Delaware County Highway Department, retiring as foreman of the bridge crew in 1979. Subsequently, he was employed for several years as grounds keeper at the Cannon Free Library, Delhi.

He was an avid deer hunter and also enjoyed designing and building various model wood construction projects.

Surviving are his wife, Lavinia Barriger at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Irma Buckbee of Sidney and Ralph and Barbara Buckbee of Rifton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sally and Robert Baker of East Rochester, N.H., and June and Joseph Kelly and Shirley Jones, all of Delhi; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Jannette Krom, Liberty; four brothers, Donald Barriger of Walton, Kenneth Barringer of Franklin, Hiram Barriger Jr. of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Raymond Barriger of Sidney; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to attend graveside services and burial at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bert More, with military honors given by Donald W. Gleason Post 190, American Legion, of which Paul was a member.

Private visitation for family members will be at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and it has been requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Louise Townsend

ONEONTA — Louise M. Townsend, 75, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Martin and Victoria (Basmajian) Bedrossian.

On June 1, 1947, she married Kenneth Robert Townsend in Oneonta. Mr. Townsend died July 8, 1973.

Louise was a lifelong resident of Oneonta and graduated from Oneonta High School.

In her early years, she worked for her parents at the family owned dry cleaners, Ballard and Ballard Dry Cleaners, which was later known as Harris Dry Cleaners. She had also worked for Bresee's Department Store and Astrocom before becoming a sales associate at J.C. Penney's. She retired in January 1997.

Louise enjoyed traveling and was very devoted to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed. She was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta.

Louise is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Christy M. Harding of Oneonta and Kay and Robert Utter of Delhi; one son and daughter-in-law, Martin E. and Trisha Townsend of Southside, Oneonta; four grandchildren, Maureen and Nicholas Utter of Delhi, Jesse Buel of Charleston, S.C., and Nathan Buel of Cold Springs; one stepgrandson, Stephan; one sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Kevork Papazian of Binghamton; one niece, Adrianne Papazian of Binghamton; one nephew, Gregory Papazian of Binghamton; her close companion for many years, Charles Rizzo of Oneonta; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Angell of Virginia; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Bruce Townsend of Oneonta and Donald and Vivian Townsend of Oneonta; and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, Nov. 7, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who may wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, 333 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in loving memory of Louise M. Townsend.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Everett Earl

SIDNEY — Everett Earl, 82, of Sidney, formerly of Otego, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

He was born March 3, 1918, in Wells Bridge, the son of Edwin B. and Carrie E. Morgan Earl.

He married the former Edith E. Lent on May 24, 1940, in Syracuse. She survives him.

Everett was employed in sales and other departments with Bendix Corp. in Sidney for nearly 40 years. A lifetime resident of the Wells Bridge and Otego areas, he and his wife moved to Sidney in 1985.

He was a member of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church and had attended the First Baptist Church in Bainbridge. Everett was a former member of the Otego Fire Department and past captain of the Otego Emergency Squad.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler and golfer.

Everett is survived by his wife, Edith E. Lent Earl, of Sidney; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne E. Earl of Oneonta, Terry and Cathy Earl of Oneonta and Gary and Sherry Earl of Unadilla; his sister, Verna Livingston of Bainbridge; and seven grandchildren, Rodney Earl and his wife, Mary, of Guilford, Jacqueline Earl of Endicott, Aimee Thompkins of Eklind, Neb., Shawn Earl of Bainbridge, Jonathan Earl of Omaha, Neb., Angela Vernon of Omaha, Neb., and Todd Earl of Ronkonkoma, Long Island. He also is survived by seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Marian Earl Caswell and Evelyn Davis.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, with the Rev. Robert Wesley and the Rev. Craig Merritt officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be given to the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, care of Frances Faigle, 535 County Highway 4, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849 or to the Sidney Emergency Squad in memory of Everett Earl.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego.
