Olma Mae Burnett

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Olma Mae Burnett, 82, of Charlotteville, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Summit, the daughter of David A. and Larissa (Mead) Foote.

She married Harry G. Mead on Aug. 15, 1937, and he died Nov. 16, 1977. On June 25, 1979, she married Wayne E. Burnett and he predeceased her Feb. 15, 1980.

Mrs. Burnett retired from  Jefferson Central School in 1979, after working as a cafeteria aide. She belonged to the Summit Grange, Charlotteville Homemakers and Summit Senior Citizens.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Wilma Mead of Charlotteville, and Roger and Joyce Mead of Tooele, Utah; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Harry Peterson of  Jefferson; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Julia Foote of Richmondville; a sister-in-law, Esther Foote of Charlotteville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

"Rest in Peace. We Love You and Miss You!"

Her sisters, Nina, Lena and Nellie; and a brother, Winthrop, predeceased her.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating.

Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be at East  Jefferson Cemetery, East  Jefferson.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Charlotteville Fire Department and to the  Jefferson Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Joanne M. Gaffney

ONEONTA — Joanne M. (Youket) Gaffney, 51, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born on Jan. 10, 1949, in Binghamton, the daughter of the late John and Kathryn Trusey Youket.

She is survived by her children, Synthia Gillette of Binghamton, Holly Gillette (Bill Hanley) of Franklin and James R. Gillette Jr. (Meghan Dewey) of Oneonta; grandchildren, Christopher Hayward, Jeremy Hayward, Caleb Merwin, Toni Hanley, Dakota Hanley, Alexander Hanley and Hunter Page Gillette; four loving sisters; six loving brothers; special in-laws, Tom Brown, Mark Leone and Jack Gillette; stepmother, Ruth Youket; and several nieces and nephews.

Joanne was a lifetime resident of the area. She was employed with the city of Binghamton courts for 12 years as a senior typist.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved her time with her children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating. Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours to the public. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Delaware County STOP-DWI, Box 152, Hamden, N.Y. 13782, or the Otsego County STOP-DWI, in care of Rich Devlin Sr., 172 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, in Joanne's memory.

Harold R. Mattice

WEST EDMESTON — Harold Robert Mattice, 70, of West Edmeston, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 2, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of John and Mary Mattice. He married Yvonne Holmes on June 29, 1996, who survives. He spent his childhood in Oneonta.

He is survived by his children, one daughter, Richard and Vicky Cookingham of Millerton; two sons, Ricky Mattice of Binghamton and Kenneth Mattice of Delhi; three stepdaughters, Diana Lum of Leonardsville, Bonnie Fletcher of Cedarville and Sarah Lum of Columbus; two stepsons, James Holmes of Bridgewater and David Lum of Columbus; four grandchildren; one brother, Howard Mattice of Pittsfield; one stepsister, Charlotte Pratt of Cooperstown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a farm hand for many years on the Pine Island Dairy Farm in Sheffield, Mass.

He was a veteran of the Korean Army War 1949-1952, and he was a member of the West Winfield VFW.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Buck, pastor of the West Edmeston First Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will be held at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, Edmeston.

Joseph McCauley

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Joseph Charles McCauley, 98, of Titusville, Fla., a longtime resident of Sidney, N.Y., died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, after a stroke and related complications.

He was born in Cardiff, Wales, on Oct. 19, 1902, and came to the United States when he was 21 years-old after which he helped bring over the rest of his immediate family. His loving wife, Althea, three brothers and one sister predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, and her daughters, Ann and Peggy of Mims, Fla.; his sons, Richard of Sidney, N.Y., and Joseph of Sacramento,  Calif.; several grandchildren; two sisters, Pat Pardee of Florida and Olivia Marshall of Skaneateles, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

"Charlie" owned the Western Auto Store in Sidney for several years.

He served on the Sidney Village Board and the board of the Sidney Golf & Country Club. He was an avid golfer, who at the age of 75 was the first there to shoot his age, a feat he repeated many times.

According to Charlie's wishes, there will be no memorial services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad or a charity of the donor's choice.

Charles O. Lockwood

ONEONTA — Charles Otto "Ott" Lockwood, 90, of Oneonta, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on July 6, 1910, in Masonville, one of eight children, and the son of the Lodovoko and Maude Conklin Lockwood. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughters, Margaret Ann and Kristy Lynn, and six of his siblings.

He is survived by three daughters, Joan M. Potter of Tennessee, Heidi L. Fedirko and her husband, Bill, of Laurens and Kathleen Roberts and her husband, Gary, of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Ronald (Ann) Lockwood of Lincoln, Del.

Ott was a lifetime resident of the area employed with the D&H railroad and as a foreman for 50 years until he was forced into retirement. He was a proud member of the union while with the D&H. He was known as the "only one" who would climb to the top of the railroad Roundhouse to clean.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and was known as "Pops" to the other sailors on the U.S.S. Newman. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Club.

Ott also loved hunting. He was legendary when it came to the outdoors. An avid sportsman, he hunted all over the U.S. and Canada. In addition, he was a master gardener whose tomatoes and garlic were known all over. He was known from time to time to feed people in the community who were in need.

He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his devotion to his family, which he held dear.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Mary's Building Fund in Ott's memory.

Louise C. Delberta

ONEONTA — Louise C. (Otello) Delberta, 84, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Oneonta, the daughter of John and Angelina (DeAngelo) Otello.

She married Carl J. Delberta on June 6, 1942, in Oneonta.

Louise was a member of St. Mary's Church, its altar guild and the Young at Heart Group, as well as the Italian American Club.

Louise was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who devoted her life to her family.

Many years were given in service to the Oneonta Boys Club. She loved working at the snackbar and getting to know the children. Her hobbies were knitting, crocheting and working in her flower garden. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Carl J. Delberta of Oneonta; her children and their spouses, Angela and Ronald Bellavia of Rochester and Carl J. and Kathy Delberta Jr. of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Jennifer Delberta, John Delberta, Sarah Delberta, Laura Delberta and Greg Bellavia; and a sister, Philomena Pecora of Oneonta; along with many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Ralph, Joseph, Anthony and Rose Otello.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Irene Conklin

WORCESTER — Irene Conklin, 78, of Worcester, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at her home.

She was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Mahwah, N.J., the daughter of William Wassel and Catherine (Oschevich) Melnick.

She married John E. Conklin on Oct. 9, 1943. He predeceased her on Feb. 22, 1983.

Mrs. Conklin moved to Worcester in 1970 from Suffern. She was a member of the Worcester United Methodist Church and the Worcester Woman's Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine, and her husband, Richard Mellon, of Hillburn; brother, John Melnick of Mahwah, N.J.; a granddaughter, Helen Smith, and great-granddaughter, Amber Leigh Smith, of Pittsfield, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, John Edward Conklin, in 1977.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, from 1 p.m. to the funeral service time at 3 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co., Worcester, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mrs. Conklin will then be cremated and burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Conklin to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Kenneth McMullen

COOPERSTOWN — Kenneth M. McMullen, 68, of The Meadows died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at The Meadows.

He was born June 16, 1932, in Worcester, the son of Meleatus and Mildred (Utter) McMullen.

Ken married Henrietta Bowers on July 17, 1954, in Oneonta. Mrs. McMullen died July 24, 1989.

Ken worked at Hartwick College in the maintenance and security departments for 21 years.

Ken is survived by his son, Charles McMullen of Oneonta.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard H. Van Dewerker

SCHENEVUS — Richard H. "Dick" Van Dewerker, 59, a lifelong resident of Schenevus, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Albany Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Otego, the son of Ivan and Hazel (Pickell) Van Dewerker, both whom have predeceased him.

He married Patricia Banks on Aug. 18, 1963.

He served in the United States Army during the construction and military reinforcement of the Berlin Wall "Check Point Charlie."

He was a proud member and sponsor of the following organizations, All His Grandchildren, the "No Name Gang" Horse Club, a 28-year member of the C.H. Graham Hose Co. in Schenevus, the Schenevus VFW Post 2752, the Schenevus Cub Scouts and the AKC Boxer Club.

Dick will be remembered for the strong family values and morals he gave to his children and his grandchildren.

He was always willing to lend "a hand" to someone in need; for this he'll be greatly missed.

He leaves behind, his wife of 37 years, Patricia; children and their spouses, Ivan and Ann Van Dewerker of Schenevus, Annette and Joe Bomba of Schenevus, Marvin and Tina Van Dewerker of  Pennsylvania, Jeff and Christine Van Dewerker of Davenport and Suzanne and Donald Lincourt of Schenevus; grandchildren, Joseph, Sarah and Andrew Bomba, Zachary and Joshua Van Dewerker, Dylan and Alexandrya Van Dewerker and a much celebrated and expected grandchild in January; and his siblings and their spouses, Paul and Shirley Van Dewerker of Maryland and Adeline and Carl Edwards of Ohio.

He will be missed by many other brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, special friends and all the members of the "No Name Gang" Horse Club, especially Mr. and Mrs. Les Crawford and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Decker.

Friends may call at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, on Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery, with full military honors presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Dick to the American Diabetes Association, Eastern Regional Office, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Charles E. Nelson

UNADILLA — Charles E. Nelson, 79, of Unadilla, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 7, 2000, at his residence.

He was born April 19, 1921, in West Laurens, the son of Hans K. Nelson and Anna M. Rasmussen Nelson.

His first wife, the former Ruth Thayer Jones, died June 25, 1988. On May 29, 1994, Charles married the former Laura Lyon Gale, who survives him.

Charles was a tool maker and machinist for the Bendix Corp., Sidney, for several years before his retirement.

He had also worked as a mason and roofer, as well as having been involved with carpentry at one time.

A resident of Unadilla since 1967, moving from Laurens, Charles was a graduate of Laurens Central School. In his younger years, he played baseball for the Laurens town team and also enjoyed football and basketball.

He was a member of the Laurens Lutheran Church and attended services at the Otego United Methodist Church. Charles was also a member of the Sidney Moose Club.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Gale Nelson, of Unadilla; seven stepsons and their wives, Robert and Linda  Jones of San Diego,  Calif., Anthony and Patricia  Jones of  Texas City,  Texas, Ronald and Patricia  Jones of Orlando, Fla., Gordon and Connie Gale of Goodyear Lake, Ronald and Kathryn Gale of Otego, Terry and Carol Gale of Monroe, N.C., and Thomas and Crystal Gale of Goodyear Lake; one stepdaughter and her husband, Rebecca and Gordon Brannick of Gilbertsville; and a sister, Carol Broadwell of Oneonta.

He also is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Thursday evening, Nov. 9, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta N.Y. 13820 or to the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in memory of Charles E. Nelson.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
