Dorothy A. Payton

MORRIS — Dorothy A. Payton, 83, of Morris, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the Chase Nursing Nome in New Berlin with her husband at her bedside.

She was born in Columbus, the daughter of Jay Boyce Amsden and Hazel Orilla (Todd) Amsden.

She was a graduate of the New Berlin Central School and she then received her teaching certificate from the Oneonta Normal School and her bachelor of arts degree from the State University College at Oneonta.

Dorothy married Dr. Jerome Payton on Feb. 19, 1944, at Piermont.

She was an educator and had taught at Leonardsville Central School, New Berlin Central School and Morris Central School.

She was active in the Zion Episcopal Church of Morris, its affairs and functions and also was a longtime member of the Butternuts Valley Arts and Crafts Center as well as the Butternuts Valley Garden Club.

In 1976, Dorothy and Doris Whitman compiled and published "Souvenir of Morris" a collection of vintage postcards, photographs and historical commentary for the Morris Historical Society.

Dorothy was an avid and consummate bridge player and also enjoyed golfing.

She prided herself on love of family and friends. At festive family dinners she would invariably admonish everyone to "eat slowly" so as to prolong the joy of the gatherings.

Dorothy Payton graduated life "Summa Cum Laude."

She leaves her husband, Dr. Jerome Payton, veterinarian of Morris; a son, Dr. David A. Payton of Schenectady; two daughters, Nancy Anne Payton of Naples, Fla., and Dr. Alice Jayne Payton of Cranbury, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Noel Ross Payton of Schenectady; a granddaughter, Rebecca Anne Payton of Albany; a sister-in-law, Kate Amsden of Fort Myers, Fla.; a nephew, Philip Amsden of California; two cousins, Mary Louise Willard Emmick of  Pennsylvania, Florida and New York, and Marguerite Willard Dardis of Florida.

A brother, John T. Amsden, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Committal service and burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish are asked to contribute to the Alzheimer's Association, Leatherstocking Branch, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, to the Chase Nursing Home, 1 Terrace Heights, New Berlin, N.Y., or to the Zion Episcopal Church, Morris, N.Y. 13808 or the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Ruth Mauger

DELHI — Ruth MacFarlane Mauger passed away Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Ann Arbor, Mich.

She was born in Delhi on Sept. 13, 1914, the daughter of William G. and Mary (Wannamacher) MacFarlane.

She married Roy C. Mauger in 1940. He died in 1993.

She graduated from Delaware Academy in 1931 and from Albany Business College in 1932.

She worked as a secretary for many years, retiring from the State University College of Technology at Delhi in 1980.

Mrs. Mauger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi for more than 70 years, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was a member of the Women's Association and of the Ester Circle, served as an elder and on several committees over the years. She was a member of the former Watauga Chapter 315 O.E.S. and had been active in both the Boy and Girl Scouts when her children were growing up.

She was also a member of the Delaware County ARC, the Delaware County Historical Association and the Humane Society.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Karen K. Mauger of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon E. and William D. Long of Ann Arbor, Mich.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jeremy Mauger, Jennifer Long and Julie Long Hopson and her husband, Justin; one sister, Helen Hoffman of DeLancey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating.

Friends may call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, at their convenience, Friday, Nov. 24, 2000. There will be no family calling hours.

Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Those who wish may make expressions of sympathy to the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Street, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Irene Conklin

WORCESTER — A committal service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

Livio L. Faoro

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Livio Lido Faoro, 82, died Nov. 6, 2000, at his home in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was born in Spring Valley, Ill., on Dec. 16, 1917, the son of Pergentino Faoro and Victorina (Bagalino) Faoro.

He spent his early childhood on the family farm in South Gilboa, N.Y.

In February of 1941, Livio joined the armed services. He served 31/2 years in the Signal Corps attached to the United States Air Force. He spent most of those years in the South Pacific, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart with a citation for bravery in action.

After his discharge from the service, he spent the rest of his life until his retirement in 1978 working on construction.

Livio is survived by his wife, Doris, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one sister, Rina M. Jones, of Harpersfield; one brother and sister-in-law, Gino and Mabel Faoro of Esperance; and 11 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Faoro of Esperance.

No memorial services will be held.

Douglas Sikkema

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Douglas E. Sikkema, 45, of 27 Lake St., lost a courageous battle with kidney disease on Tuesday evening, Nov. 21, 2000, in Saint Luke's Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford.

Words cannot express how the support of Doug's family and close friends lifted his spirits during his valiant struggle.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1955, in Dumont, N.J., son of Janet Marie McCarty Sikkema and Frederick J. Sikkema.

Doug was raised and educated in Springfield. An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he had served with the 60th Infantry Division in Germany.

On May 22, 1993, he married the former Kelly Morgan in Hyde Hall, Springfield.

For the past seven years, he has been a self-employed real estate owner and landlord.

He was baptized in the Methodist faith.

He was a member of the Utica Chapter of the Harley Owners Group. Doug will always be remembered for his love of motorcycle riding and will forever have the breeze in his face.

Surviving are his loving wife, Kelly; his mother, Janet Marie Sikkema of East Springfield; three brothers, Gary Sikkema of Springfield, John and his wife, Ann Sikkema, and Richard and his wife, Ann Sikkema, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Deborah, and her husband, Robert Bookhout, of Oneonta; one sister-in-law, Barbara, and her husband, Thomas Birmingham, of West Winfield; two brothers-in-law, Donald Morgan of Newport and Edward and his wife, Barbara Morgan, of Clay; several cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; and his beloved pets, Nacho and Sedona.

Besides his father, Frederick J. Sikkema, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Sikkema Jr.; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Morgan.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Springfield Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dwayne Durand officiating.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Doug and Kelly at 27 Lake St., on Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m. (one hour before the memorial service), at the Springfield Presbyterian Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Organ Donor Awareness Program, c/o Faxton-Saint Luke's Volunteer Association, P.O. Box 479, Utica, N.Y. 13503, the Springfield First Responders or the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the family residence.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Gregory Raymond

UNADILLA — Gregory Richard Raymond, 40, of Unadilla, N.Y., died on Thursday Nov. 23, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare Center, Cooperstown, N.Y., as the result of complications from AIDS.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1960, in Bakersfield,  Calif., the son of Ronald and Judith Cox Raymond.

He is survived by his parents, Ron Raymond and his wife, Kathy, of Orlando, Fla., and Judith Beat of South Padre Island,  Texas; his maternal grandmother, Helen Barr; sisters, Teresa Raymond-Scott and Traci Raymond of Sidney; a brother, Michael Raymond of South Padre,  Texas; nieces, Rachael and Kelsey Scott of Sidney; nephews, Lucas and Logan Raymond of Bainbridge; a special friend, Russell Hanson Jr. of Unadilla; and a special family, Russell Sr., Ramona, and Kim Hanson, of Unadilla.

Greg was a U.S. Air Force veteran who was employed in restaurant management.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Unadilla, N.Y., with the Rev. Donna Joy Scmidd officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Rural AIDS Service, in Greg's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home 357 Main St., Oneonta, NY.

Edna M. Halter

ONEONTA — Edna M. Halter, 99, of Oneonta, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 21, 2000, at her residence.

She was born April 20, 1901, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harmon R. Warner and Lulu May Houck Warner.

She was married twice. Her first husband was Arthur Wilsey from whom she was divorced. On Nov. 16, 1957, she married Charles Halter in Montrose, Pa. Mr. Halter died Nov. 13, 1977.

A lifelong area resident, Mrs. Halter was a 1919 graduate of Oneonta High School.

During her working years she held several positions. After high school she was employed by the Delaware and Hudson Railway in Albany as a bookkeeper and secretary. She later moved back to Oneonta and owned and published the first Pennysaver in the Oneonta area. She was also a secretary-bookkeeper for the first cable television office opened in Oneonta.

During World War II, she was employed by Scintilla in Sidney. In her later years, she worked at Bresee's Oneonta Department Store, until her retirement.

Mrs. Halter is survived by a son, Arthur D. Wilsey of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, will be held in the spring of 2001 at a time to be announced.

Memorial contributions maybe given to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820 in memory of Edna M. Halter.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Stella A. Daddio

RENOVA, Pa. — Stella A. Daddio, 93, of Oakridge Personal Care Home, Mill Falls, formerly of Renova, Pa., and Oneonta, N.Y., died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital, Lock Haven, Pa.

She was born May 11, 1907, in Renova, the daughter of Nobile and Annie Nose Pagnotto.

Her first husband, Anthony Curcio, died Dec. 25, 1959, and her second husband, Panerazio J. Patsy Daddio, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Dec. 25, 1985.

She was a homemaker in Oneonta for 20 years and has many friends.

She was a member of Sons of Italy and Western Clinton County Sportsman's Association, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Oneonta, the Young at Hearts, the Italian American Club, the altar and rosary societies and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Surviving are a son, John Curcio of Renovo; three daughters, Rosemary Andrus of Lock Haven, Joanne Janus of Greenbelt, Md., and Ellen Smith of Warrenton, Va.; and a brother, Francis Pagnotto of Watsontown, Pa.

Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hyner, Pa.

Gladys L. Fuller

JEFFERSON — Gladys L. Fuller, 93, of  Jefferson, died in South Kortright on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000.

She was born May 28, 1907, in Alpine, N.J., the daughter of Merwin W. and Hannah E. (Cazalet) Van Valen.

She married the late Raymond Fuller on July 6, 1929, in Connecticut. He died Sept. 26, 1990.

A lifelong area resident, Gladys has recently resided at Sara Senior Care in South Kortright.

She belonged to the Summit Grange.

A very talented artisan, she will be remembered for the lovely dolls she created and the doll museum she operated along with her antique shop, The Silver Hat Box. She designed lovely hats and was often seen wearing one of them. Ray and Gladys also tested roses for  Jackson and Perkins and had spectacular rose gardens.

She is survived by several cousins.

Graveside services will be held at Summit Cemetery; the date will be announced later

Donations in her memory may be made to the  Jefferson Methodist Church,  Jefferson.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Lela I. Hardy

JORDANVILLE — Lela I. Hardy, 94, of Main Street, died on Friday afternoon, Nov. 24, 2000, in Little Falls Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 24, 1906, in the town of Springfield, a daughter of the late Clarence and Ruby Jane Day Moyer.

Raised and educated in the town of Springfield, she graduated from Springfield teachers training school. For several years she taught school in rural one-room schoolhouses, finally teaching in the Wiltsey Hill District, the same school she had once attended. She retired from teaching in 1933 to raise her family.

In 1929, she married Donald M. Hardy, moving to Jordanville at that time. They shared a devoted union of 53 years until his passing in 1982.

She was a member of the Jordanville Federated Church, and a past president of its Ladies Aid Society.

Surviving are one son, Lucius Hardy of Ilion; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Donald, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marian Hardy in 1938; two sons, Stanley O. Hardy in 1991, and R. Spencer Hardy in 1998; and her brothers and sisters.

Interment in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville, will be private and at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

Elizabeth Hoffman

ONEONTA — Elizabeth Miller Hoffman, 83, formerly of Nader Towers, Oneonta, died Saturday morning, Nov. 25, 2000, at The Meadows, Middlefield.

She was born March 28, 1917, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Andrew and Goldie (Graham) Himes.

She was married twice. Her first husband, Mervin Miller, died in 1956. Her second husband was Clifford Hoffman Sr. He died in 1970.

Mrs. Hoffman had been a former employee of the City Hall Restaurant, the Oneonta Hotel and had worked as a chambermaid for the Travelers Motel in Emmons.

She is survived by her children, James and Cathy Himes of Florida, Kay and Orben Loucks of Otego, Dawn and Fred Siems of Oneonta, Sandi and Charles Loucks of Oneonta, Clifford and Marti Hoffman Jr. of  Pennsylvania and Nita and Victor Hill of West Oneonta; and her brothers and sisters, Andrew and Beth Himes of Arizona, Jenny Spence of Maryland, Kay Newell of Norwich, Edith and Fred Catella of Oneonta and Dorothy Himes of Sidney. She is also survived by a special niece, Judy Knapp; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Laura Mae Miller, and three brothers, Richard, Wilbur and Gerald Himes.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, when the family will be present. Mrs. Hoffman will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the charity of one's choice in memory of Elizabeth Miller Hoffman.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
